It is a fact that the Military Industrial Complex has bankrupted the United States. We spend so much on the military and looking at how much we spend and how we spend it is treated like an unpatriotic point of view. That's too bad, because the majority of our taxes go to the military, yet people that are upset about Taxes are also the same ones that say that we are not safe enough

I am Puerto Rican, though born in the States, and i can almost guarantee you it wasn't just white men who weren't ready for a female president. I am SO disappointed in SO MANY people, yet again.
I could already feel it on Tuesday when I woke up, the same feeling I had in 2016. And just like then, there will be people using lies they choose to believe to justify voting for him.

Love that you made this one. I think one of the most salient things here is that Trump the personality type is the biggest problem. People like that should fundamentally not wield power. People of insecurity, moral ambivalence, and hollow charisma should NOT be leading darn near ANYTHING. There's such a difference between a conservative that wants some different economic configuration for the world, and the sketchy charismatic Machiavellian who uses emotions, vibes, trendy appeals to capture the attention of others.
I really want to move on to a world of post-celebrity politics. I want leaders to be dry, and clear, and informed, and experienced members of their direct communities, not charismatic people making cults of personality. I specifically want reforms to Lobbying, the existence of PACs, Gerrymandering, and Citizens United.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts 👍 I consider myself an independent. Professionally, I’ve worked across both sides of the aisle. Aside from a few important policy issues, it really came down to values for me. Despite the outcome, I voted my conscious. The general public doesn’t understand the nuances of society’s complex web of systems.. and truthfully, I’d be open supporting a decent human being as a GOP candidate who can present real solutions to our complex issues. Ultimately, it’s a shame the GOP has been hijacked by extremists fueled by hateful rhetoric.
Unfortunately voters will learn the hard way by suffering the consequences of what they voted for and we’re all on for the ride..They’ll remember why Trump was voted out in the first place. It’s a shame the various insecurities, including gender and race, millions have in their own neighbors have led us all down a path to this point.

I think our problems are the obscene wealth some have. The average American cannot comprehend what a billion dollars is. Median household net worth in the US is just 200K. Imagine bicycling at 15mph with a cadence of 70. Every pedal stroke is $100,000. Two full pedal revs and we're at the median household net worth. Four full pedal revs and we're at the median for those at retirement age. It would take 10,000 pedal strokes to reach $1 billion. That's 35.7 miles. Then there are those that have 200 billion. That's 7,142 miles. Round trip trans US from ocean to ocean and back. And they want more!!!

I have a lot of friends that are talking about leaving the country, friends that are incredibly depressed, etc. It's really sad for me to see, because although I am disappointed, my emotions weren't wrapped up in this election and I have no idea how to help them. I think free thinkers and good people like yourself are ultimately the only way things are going to change. As much as I'd like to leave and as much as I can't find anything to be proud of with our country, I feel compelled to stay. If all the good people leave we're dooming this country to become just another in a long line of empires fallen to authoritarianism.

Yes, their are beliefs that align with either or both parties, but I would say the vast majority of Americans are pretty level headed and good people with good intentions. Personally, I hate that we have 2 parties that are doing everything they can to divide us and are going to extremes to do so. Ever since this encounter, I've conscientiously lived by his words in order to not get things on my nerves: "This election is going to get people angry no matter who's going to win. So, if Trump wins, it's gonna affect me from my right fingers to my right elbow. If Harris wins, it's going to affect me from my left fingers to my left elbow. The rest is how you treat other people around you." Talking about wiseman at sea... And he sure warned me the wind directions, danger areas and pointed out some best food areas to try.

It's interesting that you bring up the 1950s & 60s. Because back in that time, most Americans were better educated than they are now. Everyone saw the advantage of higher education.
That all started to change in the 1970s. There's a video (ruclips.net/video/KrU6F-S8VMo/видео.html) that explains how we got to where we are now with "anti-intellectualism" fueling the conservative mind.
And I am with you on voting for the independent/3rd party people. Voted for Nader, wanted to vote for John Anderson in 1980 (he dropped out before the election), left the Presidential choice blank in 1988 (Dukakis vs. GHWB), wanted to vote for Bernie in 2016, and voted for Stein in the last two elections. Mostly for me, local issues and elections are more important as we're more likely to be directly affected by what local politicians do than the national ones.

In Europe, as you know, there are multitudes of political parties such as the Greens, the communists, socialists and the alt far right such as the National Front (nowadays the Rallye National) in France etc. Come the election they make coalitions which foster compromise and sensible policies. Also the need to register as either a republican or democrat because of the primary system the state governments know where their supporters and opponents are it allows partisan legislatures to gerrymander districts to ensure that their party is in a majority - you only have to look at Florida to see the effect that the Republican Party has had on redistricting to dilute the democrat vote so that the republicans maintain and build their supermajority in the state which allows DeSantis to pretty much do what he wants. Getting the republicans out of power in Florida isn't ever going to happen. I live in Fl but cannot vote as I am not a US citizen. I was totally distraught yesterday when I got up and found out Trump had won, how can Americans be so stupid as to vote in a criminal. My guess is the stupid people were just focused on the huge increase in the cost of living in the last 4 years and wrongly blamed Biden who has no control over prices that are driven by republican corporate greed. I do vote in the UK elections via mail but my vote is basically wasted as the district I vote in (where I used to live) is so strongly Labour (socialist) that vote for the Green Party will have no effect given our broken electoral system which is not proportional representation. There is very little difference between democrats and republicans in the USA, both are bought and paid for by the same lobbyists but they like it that way and keeps out 3rd parties such as the Green movement. I'm with you 100% on the fact that Trump is an abhorrent human being a fascist at heart. He said it himself "I like stupid people because they vote for me". That is the crux of the matter - lack of quality public education in the US where independent thought is frowned upon. Thank you Andy.

we don't even teach the techniques of reason & logic, "critical analysis", comparative history, philosophy, ... none of that in grade school, less & less so even in college. in general, Americans are not stupid... but they are very busy trying to keep head-above-water under the influence of fantasies pushed by media & consumer marketing (which benefits from a malleable public). generally, the issue is ignorance - self-defeating in any democracy. self-government demands wisdom among the participants in order to engage in compromise that over time (iterative improvement through feedback) builds civic consensus. it ain't easy, but as ol' Ben said... "a republic, if you can keep it."

Specifically the Limbaugh stuff (I know because I was a Limbaugh listener around that time until I realized what was he was really doing). Speaking of Performance Bike. I really liked that company, especially after they opened some stores in my area (metro Detroit). Their house-branded stuff was pretty good - clothes and accessories (pumps, lights) and tools, mostly. They also bought the rights to Fuji bikes so they carried at least the name of my favorite, first road bike (1972 Fuji Finest, which I still possess and ride occasionally) I was sad to see them go, but the local bike shops were probably glad as they were similar to a big box store in terms of size and selection which I'm sure pulled a LOT of sales from the smaller shops.

Dude is some of the worst things I've ever seen in a human person. Hiding all that bs behind "family" and "conservative" values. Also, during his time, we had like 5+ ministry of health during freaking covid, dude promoted all that bs medicine that didn't work and also was anti-vaccines, literally said "if you become an alligator don't blame me". 1. China military

    5. UK National Health Service
Free healthcare for all, regardless of wealth, is far more worth spending money on than wars. One thing about voting for 3d party candidates. I never do it and won't until I see one win a major election. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and when it does break, also don't fix it 🤣
I've had a question for a while watching you clean bikes: what becomes of the soap residue from the PowerWash? Whenever I hit it with water, it foams for days, but you squirt it on and just wipe it off. Does your rag get gooey? Does it leave anything on the bike?

  • @zannanderson5684

I'm quite conservative, especially on social issues - although there are certain areas where I probably lean more liberal. I voted for republican candidates in every election until 2016 and 2020, when I voted third-party because I couldn't stomach voting for either party's candidates. This isn't about party politics for me. I actually even considered voting for Biden in 2020. I've considered myself a political nomad basically from the point at which Trump gained the nomination in 2016. I was right there with you and many others, including a lot of the other conservatives I know, hating Trump. But I voted for him this time.
For me, the beginning of my change of mind was the assassination attempt, and what happened in the aftermath. First off, I was shocked at how cynical my initial response was: I honestly wondered if it had been staged for publicity. This caused me to really reflect on why I would have such a cynical and callous knee-jerk response to such a thing. Then, I found myself one day around two weeks afterward going, "Wait, Trump was nearly assassinated and I have barely heard about it since then." The speed at which it was nearly memory-holed as a news story was astounding. These two things had me reconsidering whether my opinion of him was based on fact, or on a caricature. Finally, as I leaned into trying to learn more I found that it seemed as though much of the rhetoric around him is overblown and seemingly intended to inspire fear and hatred for political expediency, rather than actually trying to defend democracy.
So I voted for Trump. But I didn't wake up Wednesday going, "WAHOO!!!" I'm glad Harris didn't win because as far as I could gather she either didn't have a plan/direction, or the one she had was so radical she didn't want to really lay it out. However, both my wife and I expressed at the end of the day yesterday how we found ourselves feeling pretty ambivalent/uncertain throughout the day. I hope that's not because we chose poorly.
What I'd really like to see is the Republicans, should they hold sway in all three branches of government, sitting down at the table with the Democrats to break bread and really talk about how to thread the needle on the challenging problems we face as a nation. What's more likely is they'll try to remake as much of the country as possible into the image of the Republican party, whatever that is now, and in 2 and then again in 4 years the Democrats will regain more power and do the same but in the opposite direction. I wish it wasn't that way.
One last thing is that I find it an ugly symptom of the current political climate how we all paint each other with such broad brushes. I know a lot of conservatives, and I can't think of any that I'd label as uneducated, Christofascist, MAGA garbage, although most of them have voted Trump three times in a row now. I also know a decent number of liberals, and I don't think they are overeducated, arrogant, soft, lazy, entitled proto-communists. Furthermore, the assumption that those who voted for Trump are racist, sexist, and mysoginist is as lazy and ugly as is the assumption that those who voted for Harris all hate America and want to turn it into some kind of socialized Europe-lite. We can all do better.
Let's all go on a bike ride and talk things over. We ought to be able to figure at least some things out.

Most of us are moderate and just want the chance to live a free, successful life but unfortunately the extremes on both sides scream the loudest and get the most attention.
