    The great thing about a single speed bike is you never have to worry about being in the right gear because you're always in the wrong one.

      I live where its way too hilly, single speed just won't cut it unless you only ride around the flats near the beach. I live a mile or so up a 8-10% grade, so any gear I could pedal up that would be WAY too low for cruising the flats.

    I am a guy from germany, randomly fixing bikes, interested in these kinda vids. So I stumbled across your channel. So far I can say like it very much. Your vid about making the right decision in the booth was comfort food for me. Cuz everyday, here in the old world, I hear news from abroad that makes me worry. I ask myself, what the heck is goin' on there? How can people be so set in concrete with their political beliefs, that they take the risk of voting for a man who does not have a spark of decency and integrity and who is obviously going to sacrifice democracy for his own benefit? I have spread your vid to my friends, cuz I wanted them to see, that there are still nice, grounded, self-thinking peeps out there in the US. Very heartwarming, uhhh
    keep up the positive vibes!

The great thing is that you owe nobody anything for how you think neither do I expect you to think as I. Thanks for being open to sharing your perspective even though I don’t agree. As a beginner bike flipper, I really enjoy your channel. I've learned a lot, thank you. From your sense of humor to your selection of background music, I find myself calmed in this toxic environment. Politics, I have picked up that you have different viewpoints than I do, but that's ok. We are all adults. The video explains your beliefs. You did a great job of making it make sense. If we are so thin skined that an opposing viewpoint will send us over the edge, it's time to start living under a rock. So congratulations for having the courage to step up and lay it on the line. I would imagine that you will gain from this move.

    There's an aluminum adapter piece that you can get on eBay for about $10 that has a derailleur hanger and fits perfectly into horizontal dropouts! I have a singlespeed frame that I used to use a lot for work. After using a retro MTB for a while, I went back to the singlespeed and wanted options for gears, but I didn't want to buy a whole new bike and have to try to sell the singlespeed. So I looked around online and found an adapter. I spaced my steel frame from 120mm to 130mm, put the adapter in there with a road wheel, and it works beautifully! I used it to go bikepacking on singletrack, gravel roads, fire roads, etc. (it was along the VTXL). It's never given me an issue! There have been 2 times that the adapter piece got knocked a bit and bent and the shifting got wonky, but I just as easily bent it back with the derailleur for leverage.
    Not saying I think you should do that with this LeMond ss, but just thought I'd make you aware of the option! In the first 30sec of the video you mentioned that there's no room for a derailleur, so I thought you'd be pleased to know that it is a possibility and it functions perfectly well!

    • @carstenbohme8813
      @carstenbohme8813 2 месяца назад

      Thank you so much for the hint! I don't want to convert my SS but I would like to add a chain tensioner. And I have never seen one that doesn't need the derailleur hanger. So that could be a solution.

    Thanks for the single speed love. My daily driver is a 2014 Schwinn Racer with a coaster brake. It is bomb proof as long as I keep everything tight. Interesting how there can be so much variance in 32cm tires. For clearance purposes in this bike, I’d probably go with 30s as you probably wouldn’t notice too much of a difference anyway. Keep making these great videos!

      @@bkefrmrThe dedication to making that tire fit was impressive. I am a long time road biker who suffered through 23mm tires at 120psi for most of my life. I’m now using only steel bikes with 700x43, 650Bx48 and 26x2.5 and much happier with my back and wrists. The saddle in that position makes me nervous about his fit and breaking the rails, but that’s a story for another time.

    I got a bicycle for Christmas when I was 9 years old and it was way too big for me at the time. It was a Montgomery Wards Hawthorne single speed. I rode that bike for 5 years with no maintenance. It had coaster brakes(you reversed the pedals to brake. The pedals started slipping and I took the rear hub apart, there were flat springs and they were rounded off. I reversed them and rode the bike for another 2 years.(Until I got my drivers license). I didn’t think anything about riding to my friends house that was 5 miles away.

    Can't speak for this bike, but something that happened a lot during the first fixie wave around 2005-2010 is that these cheap vintage bikes (a lot of Peugeots and Motobecanes in my neck of the woods) were stripped of their shifting stuff and received really bottom-of-the-barrel replacement parts. The other, often worn parts weren't treated at all. Most of them didn't last long.

They're super tiny, you can clamp them in all sorts of areas, like at the top of the tool wall looking down on the truing stand from the opposite side. With an 8 or newer you can connect it to your phone so you can control the start / stop functions, zoom, and set up your frame.

    For fledgling mechanics learning from TBF, here are some possibly/potentially/arguably better work practices:
    i) While pounding the new crown race onto the fork, avoid having the fork tips bear the brunt of those hammer blows. It is possible to damage the fork tips. One can hold the fork in mid air while hammering. Or, if bracing against the floor is necessary, or put a wheel in the dropouts, or put a sacrificial hub in the dropouts. Bear in mind that it's still possible to bend a rim wall or even a hub flange.
    ii) Before removing the stem and bars from the bike, do the brake cable removal and grip removal. One won't have to work so hard to stabilize the pieces in mid air.
    iii) Rather than tapping the crank out of the BB cups, it might have been easier to remove the non-drive side cup first.
    iv) Wear ear protection while pounding out the headset cups.
    v) Avoid ingesting Tri Flow. I try hard to avoid breathing Tri Flow or letting it contact my skin. After handling Tri Flow for 40 years, I suspect that I have a golf ball sized amount of it throughout my body. This tip is entirely unscientific.
    Happy wrenching everyone!

    The rear axle on my Singlespeed kept creeping forward along the horizontal dropouts. One fine day, during a standing sprint towards a traffic light turning red the chain came off, my groin slammed into the toptube and my shoes skidded along the road. Miraculously I remained upright, got off the road, resettled the chain and rode home ever so slowly.
    Got a set of chain tensioners that hold the axle on either side and lead screws towards the back for a pair of metal caps to anker them to the butts of the dropouts. The metal caps bent, the axle started creeping forward again and the chain dropped again - fortunately under less dire circumstances. I could tighten those axle nuts until my palms bled and they would still works themselves loose sooner or later.

    I think the BB on the drive side is reversed in order to prevent overtightening when the BB gets blocked during the ride. I mean think about it, the BB gets blocked then it automatically releases itself instead of overtightening because of the friction and the way you spin the crank on load. I think previous BB models were harder to open and that's why they designed it this way. In case bad things happen, you don't damage the bike or bike frame.
    So, it makes sense if you find them loose as it avoids overtightened BB because BB is a strong corrosion point. It also makes sense that they get loosened as torque applied to the BB under pedaling can be way more than the recommended 40 Nm.
    The same thing applies to pedals, so you don't get them stuck. If the bearings on the pedals are not good, they will just come loose.
    I think BB is also a different topic than the freewheel, but if you think about it, when you pedal forward, you tighten the freewheel (not the cassette), while the BB actually gets loosened, as the only way to tighten the BB would be to pedal backwards, and this is on both sides. Automatically releases itself instead of overtightening because of the friction and the way you spin the crank on load. I think previous BB models were harder to open and that's why they designed it this way. In case bad things happen, you don't damage the bike or bike frame.

    Nice video. Was expecting more problems the way you started off. I would like to see a IGH video (3 , 5, 7 or 8 speed). Be interesting to hear you talk about those.

    I bought a tube of grease from park tool the other day. The blue stuff. High performance somethinrather. I didn’t know there were other kinds for bikes. I will be overhauling an old Kabuki from like the 70s, hubs, head, bb, etc. Should I go get the green stuff that you used on this, which I think is the polylube maybe, or will the blue stuff work the same? Cool video by the way. More work involved than a regular tune up but now its a brand new bike but better because it won’t get stolen so quickly.

    Love your content. No worries about sharing your opinions, I don’t get offended. I’m here for entertainment, and I don’t take advice from entertainers. I’m also here for education, but you are a bike mechanic, so I’ll leave the education to bike topics. I love cartridge bearing wheels, just pop out the bearings and press in new ones. You just need to watch the preload, check every few months. Do you ever wax chains/drive train? I started five years ago and I’m never going back.

    Keep the Rant Stand stuff coming. It’s arguably the best thing about the channel. I actually find myself hoping that the wheel is massively out of true just so we will get a proper rant. Anyway great video as always.

    And here I am, servicing *another* fork on another of my bikes with this video in background.
    My singelspeed one needs no service at this time, yet. It will be due for an overhaul next spring after full winter of commuting. Man, I hate how it thins out rims with rim brake pads; that might be the main reason I will eventually sell this bike and replace it with a klunker that has discs for the brake friction job.

    Regarding the uneven chain tension: I _think_ part of the problem is the uneven wear of the chain ring on heavily used bikes. On my bike I started to re-mount the ring with an offset of 1 or 2 positions on the crank arm during maintenance. The idea is to even out the wear. No idea yet if that really helps or may even have negative side effects.

    I find it really interesting about all the stuff that goes into maintaining or building a bike. It makes me respect my bikes so much more.
    On another note, I sought out and watched your notorious video that you closed the comment section on. I really liked your discussion and viewpoints. All very well considered, reasonable viewpoints. I'm sorry you experienced so much blowback from it. It's a symptom of our current zeitgeist. It isn't just us in the US, it's a global problem.

    What a boring world it would be if we all thought and believed the same. Amazing how many grown adults can’t handle someone else having a different opinion than them. I’ve cut loose many “friends” in recent years because of this very thing. Keep doing what you do.

    I’ll always morn my first bike. Got it one Christmas when I was about 8 years old. A 26 inch wheel with single speed coaster brakes. Remember those? I stripped it down in the mid Sixties and it was then the very first ever gravel bike, lol. I went away to college and my parents sold it in a garage sale. That hurt. Since the I’ve had many bikes but never one I loved like that one.

    have you ever though of using like evaporust in steel bike frames?

    • @jaspervanestelfeen2173
      @jaspervanestelfeen2173 2 месяца назад

      lineseed oil will do better for protecting the inner tubes from rust. evaporust works good on rusty parts

    • @aidansnowhawk1
      @aidansnowhawk1 2 месяца назад

      @jaspervanestelfeen2173 well for older bikes that already have rust in the tubes, it would stop the rusting process then put linseed oil in it.

    • @CodSlap
      @CodSlap 2 месяца назад

      To anyone reading this, forget the linseed oil stuff - for frame protection, all you need is Fluid Film Liquid A. Lanolin (wool-wax)-based, non-toxic, non-biodegradable oil. Indefinite shelf life. Eats away at existing rust and settles on the base metal. Creates a fluid film barrier that reacts with the moisture in the air to stay liquid, creating a layer between the metal and the air that prevents new rust from forming. Pour some in the frame tubes, slosh it around, let it creep around and you’ll have a steel steed that will outlast your grandchildren. Crazy great stuff. 👍
