Hand Independence is a big deal when it comes to learning the piano. One of the questions I hear most often as a piano teacher is "how do I get my hands to do different things at the same time?!"
While developing hand independence is a gradual process that happens naturally as you learn piano, here are a few quick tips to help speed that process up. 😎

My hands learned independence and now they wont listen to my brain at all!
HAHAHAHA!
Sounds like things have gotten out of hand...
WaterYaDune i see what you did there
Viva la revolution!

My problem is my left hand thinks hes the right hand.
I love your comments
You're amazing dude 💀

To all the people saying they cant do it. I literally started really slowly. So slow that i literally sounded like i was pressing random notes in no rhythm whatsoever. I really really slowly picked up the speed and now i can do it really easily. This probably wont help because im terrible at explaining stuff but hey-ho i tried
Thanks for sharing this Izzy!
Exactly, start off going as slowly as you have to while trying to play at a consistent a speed as possible, and speed up as you can. I went from not having touched a piano in over 20 years to playing Mad World, playing the piano part righty and the vocal part lefty.
To say I went so slowly to force my hands to do 2 different things that it was any sort of musical piece would be an understatement of massive proportions. I would literally play 1 measure in ultra slow motion, at a time, until I was able to bring it up to speed. If you do that exercise, even if you have to count to 5 for the 1/4 notes so that you can make your 1/8 note hand play at the right time, start off that way.
I would say a metronome is likely the best way to go one you get a few passes at an inconsistent speed, as slow as it needs to, to help become consistent, and from there it can be sped up to help you so you don't really have to count during.
There are free metronome apps for cellphones, so people don't have to get one.
The metronome is probably the best friend any musician can have for practice, but especially one starting out who don't have an internal one just yet... and probably the most neglected one as well by most!
And I say this having a beautiful metronome that's somewhere in my home collecting dust... I'd lie if I said I was good about it majority of the time, I really need to use it more when practicing the piano and guitar... lol.
@@PianoteOfficial does playing the song minuet work as well? Just started a week ago and been working on minuet for a while now. Reading the music sheet is pretty basic but hand independence and knowing when you should really press and release is the hard part. If this could work are there any other musics I could practice on for beginners that has trouble with hand independence?
@@eventhorizon I tried using metronome which is built in with the synthesizer I bought only to know how long I should press each notes. Didn't know I could use the metronome that way as well!
@@DonutEatingDoggo the metronome is great for playing consistently at any speed, no matter who you are, it's very easy, over time, no matter how slightly, to speed up at parts your confident in, and slowing for parts that are tough.
Once I have the idea of the song down, I'll practice at whatever speed I have to so I can play at a consistent pace, even if it means I play the majority of the piece slower than I need to because there's one part I find tricky.
Then, because any time I work on something new my instinct is to stop at mistakes, which doesn't help if you're playing in front of people and need to just play through errors, I practice at speed, so I work on playing through mistakes, working on fixing them next time through.
I find the metronome helps for both of those... I'm no where near where I could, like, be a musician in a band, but it helps me tremendously.
And it's something anyone who has been a teacher to me with any kind of instrument has drilled into me. Even professionals can benefit by using their metronome.
Even knowing that I practice too often without it, and always notice the practicing is noticeably improved when I do.
Once you have an internal "metronome" you can count on, I'm sure you need a physical one less, but it's a good tool to have around.
almost had a seizure trying to make my hands do this
Same thing with me just watching her do it this will break your brain
I thought it was just me...🤯🤯🤯
😂😂😂😂😂
ROTFLMBO! Me too!
I'd like to like this comment but it's already at the perfect number and I don't want to ruin it
I haven't even tried yet and I can feel the oncoming stroke I'll get

Ah everyone has been through that stage of playing the piano
Laughing through the tears
this is SO relatable I can't even explain
Who else’s brain malfunctions every time you try using both hands
At first mine did but I kept practicing slowly and just kept at it. Once your brain learns what you're trying to do it adapts surprisingly quickly. You then feel a bit foolish for thinking it is soooo hard, when it really isn't. Keep going, you'll get it, I promise!
Mine
When I tried it I heard a pop in my brain... that can't be good!!
Col Oaten do you have any tips? I’ve started playing piano recently and using both hands at the same time is super hard. Especially when there’s different rhythms for both
Dizzy
I did this exercise and punched my keyboard. Is that normal
@@PianoteOfficial so its normal? Shouldve known when it hurt. Thank you
hahaha, you, my friend, made my day :)
Why did u punch the keyboard ,fault lies elsewhere ?☺☺
😂
Nope i done it too
*plays a single C note on one hand*
Whelp that's enough for today I've been thoroughly challenged
There's 87 more keys haha.
😂
I read this in the voice of Dale Gribble
LMAO
My brain: That's easy!
My hand: Hold my beer.
"just laugh it off"
*turns into joker*
Zippownz OMG YES this is original I like it so much :3
HAHA
“Just laugh it off” * *insanely laughs loudly* *
Heyy monika are you still trying to learn the piano? :D
Thank you so much i have finally learned hand independence without getting frustrated at all now my hands are independently lying on the floor ripped apart😊
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
not gonna lie you had us in the first half
Wow. That got me. 😂
😂😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣
_kindly_ You can do that right ? *NO, NO I CAN'T!!!* * cries in the corner *
Don't give up!!
@@PianoteOfficial This hurts mah hands and I had a hard time doing 1:10
@@-qylin Take it in small chunks- work at it for 10 min- then walk away and come back to it tomorrow.. it'll come together !
@@PianoteOfficial HI. How long does it take students (the slow learners like me) to be able to do every exercises in this video flawless?
@@Duke49th for me (quite slow learner) it took like 10-20mins to learn and play a bit faster but the switch is the hardest part for me. it might not take as long for you or even longer because not everyone learns at same pace :)
Why do i feel like i have 6 fingers all of a sudden
No u hav 10 fengrs
I keep forgetting that I have pointer fingers. I think that's normal.
You still have a long way to go, you need at least 20 fingers to play Beethoven
@@lara_spithfire I need 50 fingers to play Liszt.
"It's gonna sound like this" No, no it is not
Lmfao
Lol
I got it. !! Its like being married, you want to quit and walk away never touching it again but just force yourself to do it tell yourself maybe its gonna get better.
budzie budzie This analogy is awfully specific. Are you okay?
@@Liz-lw4mr im fine now thanks for asking
budzie budzie wtf kinda comparison is that
@@iactiv6274 a great one
Are you ok?
I can't even watch you do this without passing out
Omg? I literally passed out. My one brain cell died
I tried this and now my left and right hands are so independent they moving out and are renting a place on their own
Hahaha!
Wow 😱 ! 😂😂
Dude. I think I found one of your hands under my pillow!! I hit it with a hammer and it ran out the window! Creepy!
@@Nawaf- the next coraline
LOL!
I started playing piano a few weeks ago, this "hand independence" thing seems like wizardry to me right now, but I'll come back to this video in a year or two and have a chuckle out of it.
Well it’s been a year how is it now 😂
Glad RUclips recommended me this, was looking for an exercise like this.
her: "now do this right after with out a pause"
me: "HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO DO THIS WITH OUT A PAUSE WHEN I CANT EVEN DO IT SEPARATELY"
her: "laughs"
me after 10 minutes: "i am so happy you exist"
The advice to do it with humor is really great
These comments got me crying lol

Facts 😤
You are quickly becoming my favorite piano teacher. I just love your content. Thank you!

It's the real torture at the beginning but soon you will be proud of yourself.
So did these exercises genuinely help u advance in your learning?
What I learned from the get go is to not think of 2 seperate hands but more of "you've got 10 fingers who are working together": It probably helped me a lot without me noticing.
This comment helped me subconsciously tremendously, because I'm practicing a piece where your left and right hands have to be synced up, and I don't know why but my left hand always wants to go faster.
This is actually really good, never played piano before and did pretty well, you just have to start slow and build your way up
Finally, some one who understands my level, and makes a great simple video... You have won yourself a follower!!!
Instruction unclear :
my hand left my body
Bruh just tried this and this exercise is god tier for begginers like me
Made the giorno theme 100x easier
OMG I FINALLY GOT IT! been practicing at this for weeks and it just clicked today! Thank you for posting this exercise I look forward to more! 👍👍
I am an absolute less than one week NOOB, and I couldn't do this at all at first. So I spent about an hour just practicing each hand independently until I could do the C thru G and back to C comfortably with my eyes closed. At this point I can kind of perform the exercise without my brain rejecting what I am trying to make it do. I still have ALOT of room for improvement, but I think I will have it in a few more days of diligent practice

Ha ha! I'd better watch my grammar! Thank you for the inspiration, gr8mikeY! I started 2 weeks ago and I'll attempt this the way you describe.
thanks for the tip. I'm gonna give it a shot.
How's it going for you, by the way.
@@modernvintagelifestyles Still working at it. I am certainly no natural talent at it to be sure. I should probably be working on drills like this one more than I do. Lately I have been downloading beginner sheet music from 8notes(dot)com and having a go at learning how to read sheet music. Hardest piece I have managed to play so far is "The Entertainer" no not the actual real version, but the beginner noob version.
I have to assume there is a blessing from above that this much-needed exercise was uploaded on my birthday. Happy Birthday to me!
Your a great piano teacher. I am just starting out and I really feel like your videos can help me alot. It's been my long dream to play the piano so hopefully I can play something cool really soon. Thank you for this vid.

Thanks for this. Complete beginner, just bought a new piano, determined not to just let it be a piece of furniture. At first this simple exercise fried my brain but I am getting there and will persevere.
These comments are gold! What helped me is doing this off the keyboard and simple taping the motions onto my desk while watching stuff over and over and it eventually clicks.
When I tried it I heard a pop in my brain... that can't be good!!
Uh oh!
Lol
This is great exercise! I feel myself getting stronger! Thanks for all the tips!
Wow! This is the exact thing i was looking for!!!👍👌
Complete piano beginner here. Started 1 month ago. If you learn the first few bars of Yann Tiersen’s “Comptine d’un autre été - l’apres midi” and practice them consistently to perfection, then I promise you will be able to do these exercises first try like I did.
Trueeeee
I tried to do the exercises. "Laugh it off", she said. But I ended up cursing my hands, wanting to break them and throw them out of the window for being too stupid and not obeying and do as I command them...
I have watched tons of videos about learning piano and music in general. You are a really great teacher, I think in fact that you are the best teacher on youtube. Your channel should have a million subscribers
Thanks for this video! It really helped me!
Really one of the best tutorial I found in youtube
Oh my lord. "Try to make this more challenging"? I cant complete the first excersize
I got lost in the process...
Mary G I had to play the first lesson back 3 times to understand wtf she was doing, and now I already forgot!
idk if this will help but go very very very slow
Its ok a little more practice and you can do it start slow.
Glorious lesson!!!! Thank you so much for sharing!
cannot thank you enough. you are a gem to piano learning on youtube.
Another great lesson. Everyone has to take it slowly and they will get it.
Some thought I was so coordinated when watching me play guitar. Not so much, if they saw me doing these exercises on the keyboard.
Agreed, it’s a whole other level
I love your teaching way. Thank you so much.
You are a gorgeous instructor, this helped me ALOT!! Thank you!!
A little more than a month ago, I started learning to play the piano. Everything was simple, until I came to the use of two hands at the same time not in simple compositions. Your video helped me to finally deal with this problem, for which I am very grateful to you!
Thank You! I watched this video 9 months ago and it took my music playing and writing to brand new places.
Thanks! This is helping!
My brain keeps putting everything into specific patterns making it so that I can do the exercises perfectly but I still have pretty bad hand independence when it comes to playing actual music.
Thanks for the lesson! I'm really proud of myself for being able to get it right after some practice haha. And yes what everyone's saying: start really slow and then build up speed as you go along
Wow! This is such an awesome method. Thank you!!
I’m glad I found this channel. So helpful
Thank you for this exercise. It makes my brain hurt at first, but if I let go it starts to happen.
You know it's an exercise if you're sweating at the piano. Thanks :)
This exercise was really helpful and just what I needed! Thank you so much for this 💗 I’m still a bit slow when it comes to the 2nd part of this exercise, but I’m glad I can see a bit of improvement with my hand independence after the first half
Thats the best practice I have ever seen, Thank you!
Oh god, i will spend monthes to master this 😀 but sure i will master the both after all.
Thanks a lot for you and all the team.
You will have it in a couple of days, just practice a half an hour a day! I am a veginer taling classes and i am not a genius but am doing great! Just dont stop!
My brain keeps telling me that I don’t have a left hand...🤔
I really like this video! Extremely helpful.
This is awesome. I’m totally struggling with this at the moment. Thank you!
The exercise worked well on me! At first it was a bit tricky but I got the hang of it. Try to relax your mind and not overthink that you'll hit the wrong key.
Start of slow and gradually fasten your pace. Thank you for this! 💜
1:33 "So, it's not so bad, you can do that right?" NO. NO I CAN NOT.

The way you explained it all really went over well for a beginner like me and many others.
