  • I noticed this swimmer is making 3 critical mistakes that are causing him to fatigue quicker and miss out on the most powerful part of his stroke

Analyzing imperfect technique like this is so helpful!! Really improves my understanding of the fixes I need to make next time I get in the pool. Thank you!

I attest to breathing out too fast too soon. It induces panic and sinking feeling. I am practicing mindful breathing, small trickle and bubble out when head is turning before clearing for air intake; no big air rushing out, no gulping air in desperation. I practice daily to drill everything right into deep subconscious.

Good observations.. i feel he is dropping his elbow quite alot and his hand is closed and not relaxed whilst entering (now it looks more like arrows into the water). Also the hand should be cutting near wrists and there should be connection with hands and legs opposite kick. A little glide in the front end would help to gain that extra distance.. the rotation is fine as long as he is going for a hip driven technique

These videos are immensely helpful! Any tips on how to keep your legs straight? I tend to rotate my legs compared to my upper body, like the body should be a straight line but I tend to have an angle between my upper and lower body, I believe due to over rotation.

To correct his entry, I would get him to do a drill with holding onto a kick board out in front with one hand and then getting his other hand to enter the water just before the board.

Thank you for saying this. Bubble bubble breathe is nonsense, people sink.

This was, when I used to swim, my stroke all over. Rotating too much to the left, not enough to the right, entry too early, head too high, kicking too much trying to stabilise the stroke hence wasting lots of energy. Solution?

When you talk about getting more power is it possible to pull to hard that the slips more through the water than the resistance it offers for propulsion or is this a constant balancing act and that it depends on the distance you are swimming

It is hard to tell from the video, but it looks like he starts his recovery stroke too soon, like right at the hip bone rather than going full length. Underwater video is really needed for full analysis. I can't remember which video it was, but you did one on getting full extension of your arms with freestyle. I think there was even a drill that went with it.

But how can you exhale all the air through your nose in the time the head's turning. Seems impossible to empty the lung that way. Or should we empty them ?

  • @pumpkinbananas2983

I always find I'm out of breath & feel like I don't get enough air when I turn to breathe, I also think I'm exhaling too quickly in the water
