what kind of bikes ya'll using? please don't tell me surly's. there's other good touring bikes out there besides surly's.
How did you get your car from your start location to the finish location?
We didn't. We left our car in Crescent City, CA and rented a Uhaul truck and drove to our start in Astoria. We left the truck at the start and rode back to our car.
Do you recall how many if any flat tires you had on the trip?
Yes, it was exactly ZERO. We were prepared to with extra tube and patch kit, but we didn't have any.
Thanks for the lovely armchair adventure! I wonder about the gearing on your bikes. It seems bicycle manufacturers are very very slowly waking up to customers' dissatisfaction with the gear ranges they put on touring/loaded bikes, i.e. road bike gears for a touring workhorse. But you did it and survived!
The gearing on our bikes was just stock, and to be honest we thought nothing of the gearing when making our bike purchase. I'm fat and only have 1 lung, so pedaling all my gear up and down the hills on a bike was going to be hard no matter what my gearing was, so I figured whatever Salsa said was best for all around touring would be just fine for me. But we are seeing, with the release of the new Shimano GTX groupset, some manufacturers are starting to be more concerned with the gearing specific to the "adventure cycling" application.
looking at your strava to help plan my route, awesome Job!!!
are there any route changes you would recommend in hindsight that differ from yours?thanks!!
Not really. The only one I can think of that I may have changed was on the first day. We strayed from the Adventure Cycling Association maps the first day and took the 101 along the coast instead of their route along the Lewis and Clark River. From what I can see the other route is a bit more scenic so I may change that if we were to do it again.
One road I would for sure not miss is the Otter Crest Loop (on our day 3) before Beverly Beach (Southbound). I don't know if it was the fog or the adrenaline leftover from the rain storm, but that was such a cool stretch of road.
"Yeah it was!...anyway...."
