Great reaction, Red! I never got much into the Winter brothers, but liked the songs that i heard. This is the Stones song.
I liked Edgar in both of his bands The Edgar Winter Group and White Trash, but to me, Johnny came along when I got into the blues heavy. Johnny always was true to his love of the blues. He came out of Texas where a lot of great blues men hid out. He probably did more for blues music by bringing a whole new class of listeners to the genre than anyone. He also brought back Muddy Waters career producing and playing on his great album Hard Again. For those reason, Johnny has to remain my favorite.

Johnny was blues incarnate. No gimmicks or hi tech, just plug and play. I believe the other guitarist is Floyd Radford (correct me if I'm wrong). They blasted back and forth and never a note out of place. Johnny brought this song to life with pure fire. The Stones original version sounds like elevator music by comparison. Edgar played with Johnny in the beginning, keys and sax. Awesomely talented. Then he got into scientology. What was he thinking?

I just found your channel, and immediately subscribed! While Johnny Winters has been called a rock guitarist, and a very capable one, but at his heart, he's a blues player. He was incredibly well known in the late 60s and early 70s, and in fact, his performance at the Woodstock festival was one of the high points of that concert! At the time, he could sell out arenas or stadium shows. His skills on guitar, especially when playing the slide, was amazing, but unfortunately, he ran into some severe trouble with drugs, like heroin, which really took a tole on his life. The last time I saw him perform, he was so fragile, he had to be helped on stage, and had to play while sitting, though his playing was still phenomenal.

Side note .... the song was inspired by Keith Richard's Gardner. Mick heard him walking by the window and ask who that was. Keith replied " oh, that's Jack ... jumpin' Jack". The rest is history.
Rock and Roll stage clothes could get really over the top. A great example is a skin-tight body suit with a guitar built into it worn by Edgar Winter Group guitarist Rick Derringer. It was on the cover of his solo album. one of the great things of that era was AOR, album oriented radio. Longer songs got airplay, and often whole album sides.
Stage clothes are often even more over the top today. Or should I refer to almost-bare butt cheeks twerking on stage as "less over the bottom" instead of "more over the top"?
Frankenstein was number 1 on the Rock listing in the USA and Canada back in those days. We were rolling music people. Edgar was the quiet type and Johnny was open. I loved both from our high school times.

Yes, it was not at all uncommon in the 70s and 80s for performers to wear bright colored and other crazy style clothes. Heels for men were quite common also. I may get clobber for this but on watching this I can say that I like this even better than the original. (Now covering my head).
The big brother Johnny started first and was on the bill at Woodstock (Edgar was unknown relatively although on a cpuple of songs). Highway 61 was big. Johnny in later years working with. Muddy Waters.
Red, you mentioned the song's length. Back then the radio station's playlists were usually done by the station's staff, not dictated from a distant corporate monolith like today's Clear Channel. If DJ's wanted to go take a break to spark up or head to the john, they'd find a nice long song to cover for them. On occasion entire albums would be played, usually at night. God only knows what a DJ (and friends) might be up to then. Anyway, it was nothing like corporate radio today. I guess the closest way to have a listening experience similar to the way it used to be would be to tune in lower power stations run by colleges.
AM radio for a long time wanted 2 1/2 to 3 minute songs, when FM came along they were more willing to go with longer cuts. Some FM stations were AOR, album oriented rock, so you got the longer uncut track, sometimes one side. ( some Pink Floyd. Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer one side was basically a track) one here played an entire album at midnight and and a poor college student could but cassette tapes cheaper than albulms so that was a way copy until you could buy one

Thank you for that - I'd have been 21 at that time, but this passed me by - a very different emphasis than the Stones' original - far more about the guitar and less vocal-centred - I loved it.
As to the clothing, well, Rock and Roll has always been pretty transatlantic - fashions skipped back and forth from the USA to Europe and vice versa, in a matter of days once the Television age got properly under way in the mid-sixties. The clothing would have seemed just cool and fully of its time. (except our parents would have laughed at it, of course!) The long hair was probably fairly much accepted by then, but ten years earlier was a different story - in '64 Johnny's hair would have caused some outrage among older people, they still expected Rock singers to look like Elvis or Bill Hailey.
And as you said, Punk was just around the corner - by 1976 all traces of restraint in clothing or hairstyle was gone - it was literally a case of 'anything goes'.

pretty good for being an albino in Tx growing up. That's why he and his brother have no color in their hair. so they probably stayed inside a lot and practiced their music. that's why they are so good. it's a shame Johnny is no longer with us 2014. but Edgar is still going strong, just won a Grammy in 2023 Best Album.
Fashion was almost exactly the same at that time in the UK - this performance was originally aired in 1974 ( just before punk really broke ) on the only decent music programme on UK T.V. at the time - The Old Grey Whistle Test - which basically showcased bands that were anything but pop ( thankfully ) - the downside was that it aired at around 11.45 pm although the first show was broadcast on a Tuesday at 10.55pm . The OGWT ran for 16 years from 1971 - 1987 and featured a LOT of American bands and artists .which in the days before the internet was an eye-opener !
They cut out a bit of the drum duet and the sythisizer work to put the song on the radio, but it was still long for the time. I really like Edgar's work more than Jonny's, but I enjoy both.

What a great cover! I don't know why I'd never heard of these brothers before you did that first one. I've seen enough of these old tv shows over the years but never came across them. I think I've got to say that was better than the original.

In my opinion Johnny did the stones better than the Stones themselves. You should try "Stray cat Blues" or "let It Bleed" (both Stones songs) by Johnny...he kills em.

Edgar was more "Rock" and I liked that better.
Edgar better voice i guess but Johnny made better albums for the most part in my opinion. The British and Americans wore very similar fashions in the 60's and 70's. This predates punk by a few years.
