- Working with a landscape of trees can be a little overwhelming. In this video I walk you through how to handle this difficult subject and end up with a painting that becomes a landscape painting you can enjoy painting.
In today's video I mention John Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting. It is invaluable and even though I've read through it several times over the years, I still refer to it. I highly recommend this book, here's the link: amzn.to/41yIB5b

This is one of my favorite videos of yours so far. I’m always trying to get a muddy image to become organized.
I’d love if you made a video that was a checklist:
Foreground: darkest darks, most variety of small value shapes, highest saturation colors…
Background, colors lack yellow and red, lowest contrast between darks/ lights…
It’s just hard to remember all the general guidelines for for/mid/background.
Thanks so much!!
Thanks I'll make a note of that
This was so excellent. The demonstration of perspective, foreground, the talk of values, inconsistent shape reminder, all of it. I hope you do more like this! So helpful. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
You’re full of valuable helpful direct information. Just discovered you now I’m going through your catalog.
Thanks and welcome
Another great lesson on how to organize complex landscape. Thank you!
Thanks Barb, glad it was helpful
Impressive explanation! One of the best I've found after hours of searching here. Thanks and keep going!
Thanks, I will.
I really thank you for taking the time to make this because when I see it it's way too much noise and confusing to interpret.
I will really study this video to understand pai ting foliage.
Thank you sir
Your welcome Stephen
Really have to look at this %over and over! I am still trying to paint those yellow trees I fell in love with in Painting Light and Shadow workshop!
trees can be tricky
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, this is so helpful when confronted by a complex scene
Your Welcome!
Once again you’ve saved the day or rather the painting. I couldn’t work out what was wrong . . . . . . too few layers & all too close. Thank you Phil 🙏
Glad it was helpful Anne

Super helpful as always - you have helped me a lot!
Thanks Chris, glad they're helpful.
I would love if you had a mini-course where we just simplified images using your method. I feel like getting 20-30 reps of doing this in an organized way would change my whole practice.
Do you have such a thing? Also do I recall that you have an interactive feedback community on Facebook for supporters?
Yes, Easel Insight has short weekly lessons as well as an interactive facebook group, here is the link: easelinsight.com/
