Never submitted a book for grading. Only ever owned one graded book. An early Justice League of America (first appearance of Queen Bee) which I bought simply because it came up on auction on ebay in oz, which is where I get my books mostly. I am nearly 100% raw in my collection. Will probably crack its slab one day, as my comics are for me anyway.
As someone who only collects raw comic books, I find your videos on slabbed books both facinating and entertaining despite the fact that I don't buy or support any CGC books. If I had to guess, I'd say that your infectious enthusiasm on the subject is something that any collector can relate to, regardless of what it is they're collecting. As with all of your videos, the presentation of your dialogue is greatly appreciated. If you're reciting prepared material, it never sounds like you're reading off a cue card, and if you're speaking stream of conscious we never see any brain farts, stammers, etc. There's a level of professionalism that goes into your videos that sets you apart from the average RUclipsrs who just do one take talking into their iphone. Thank you for putting in that extra effort!
That's really kind of you! I studied to be an international court of human rights judge and was always in debate classes and whatnot. Public speaking ain't no thang for me. Thanks for noticing!
Years ago (decades) I used to trade a few comics back to the comic store for cash and often store credit. Haven't sold a comic in years now. Don't do that anymore. I suppose theoretically there might be some long term investment copies in my collection, but my comics are for me.
Its killing the hobby and clogging up CGC. It's insane. Spending $500 on 10 submissions to end up with a book you can buy for $50 on ebay. CGC laughs all the way to the bank especially as people send in dozens of modern copies of comics that came out 6 months ago. SMH
Uncanny X-Men 266 was one of the first X-Men comics I ever bought. It was a newsstand edition I got at the grocery store, and it was probably only like a 7.5 the day I bought it. In those days people at newsstands would just drag their hands across the tops of all the comics on the rack, bending them all identically along the spine, in an effort to quickly look through all the titles. It was pure madness.
Another great video, love your honest commitment to your collection! We’ve all regretfully gotten rid of books we wish we hadn’t but like you’ve said in previous videos not to regret but to learn from those experiences!
The grades that comics get are the grades they are supposed to get in the grand scheme of things. We want our books accurately graded in the end. The marketplace once accurately graded books. It doesn't want books which aren't accurately graded. You can't make a 9.2 a 9.8 no matter what you argue. All that is probably going on with your books is statistics. Maybe a little bias from CGC for various diabolical reasons - potentially. Who can really tell? Accept your grades. They are the facts of pannapictagraphics.
It’s funny that you posted this video today. I just found out the grades on my latest submission and 2 books are on your list that received a 9.8. My personal copy of Batman 423 and my store’s copy of X-men 266. I bought the Batman 423 off the shelf new when I was a teenager. I had in a polybag all these years until recently when prices spiked and added a board.
I've submitted several Amazing Spider-man 365s to CBCS with the 1st couple coming back as 9.8s but the rest 9.0 to 9.6. The Infinity Gauntlet 1 is also very tough with all the production issues I have seen on that issue, mainly a tear on spine probably from stapling pressure and a horizontal ink stripe across the back cover both being common on the issues I had. I had a stack of around 20 or so, handpicked back in the day for condition and unread and very few looked like they could get a 9.8. I sold comics at conventions in the late 80's and early 90s and this was left over stock.
*_Have you tried sending in on another, new account or a friends account? That's what I do if I can't get the 9.8 and only 9.6; I then get the 9.8 on my friends account. I think they have "notes" on people that somehow affect the grades. There's been several YT's who submit to CGC that have experienced "something is going on" as they have sent the books in on a friends account._* *_It does look like it happens more often to those who send in hundreds of books a year._* *_Also, it could just be that "Modern Books" are in such good condition that they are more strict today._* *_Then again, who knows. The salery at CGC is $15/hour, it's just randoes who are looking over and giving grades. If someone higher up says "don't give out more than one hundred 9.8's a day"; this might be a reason. Because re-submitting is BIG BUSINESS for CGC._*
I have yet to get any books graded, but I have a really clean X-Men Annual #14 that I want to submit. Good to know how hard 9.8s are so I can limit my expectations.
GL Corps 201. I sent in my original copy recently to CGC and it came back a 9.8. During the time it was at CGC my thought was to consider trading it to you since you mentioned a few times about that particular issue as a gap you had. By the time it came back from CGC you indicated having picked up a copy. Right? So looks like I’m keeping it for myself. I also had good luck with ASM 365, Batman 635, New Mutants 87. In the past I’ve been jealous of your ability to get 9.8s on the 1980s books. So I feel slightly better after watching this video. My GL 141 is out at CGC right now. Second attempt. I’m expecting no better than a 9.6. But I’ve been wrong (both ways) before. My Achilles Heel is Mad Love. Has always failed a 9.6 pre-screen, forget getting 9.8. My current submission I just waved the surrender flag and sent it without a screen. As a huge fan of all the Batman Animated series I just want that book in a Slab at this point.
Some comics and eras in the 90s and 80s had always slight defects that were in newsstand issues maybe shipping issues or printing the detectives in early 90s were hard to find in excellent condition the paper and maybe packaging was problem I do appreciate you trying for perfect issues but I gave up and loved them for what Is in the content

I can feel the pain, when I was at LA Comic Con last year I decided to get one of my copies of Lethal Protector 1 signed by Sam De La Rosa, book looked perfect and it came back a 9.4, really hurt getting that grade with how sharp it looks, and then a few months after my cousin got his 2 copies of Lethal Protector 1 back and they were both 9.8… our copies look practically the same but that’s just how some things play out.
X-men #268; 9.2, 9.4, 9.6. Trying again. Wolverine #17; 2 @ 9.6 will try again soon. I'm submitting 2 super mario Bros. #1 standard grading to see what happens. These books almost all have a long printer crease along cover right side cover & back cover. Wish me luck. Great Video.
Sorry if I missed this, but I believe you said the runs you are trying to complete are all CGC... Have you found the same submissions to CBCS rendered the same outcome?
Hack slash 1 sent in twice 1st time was damaged in transport to cgc turned it into a 9.0 my second attempt is on the grading floor at cbcs will find out soon what it got. Dark cover hard to get a 9.8
I've so far subbmited 3 books myself I have a spiderman 361 first ever raw copy sent it in got a 9.8 and a secret wars 8 Canadian price varient I was expecting a 9.2 witch would've still been a upgrade to my then current copy and I got a 9.6 I also recently sent out a fantastic four 75 I'm hoping for a 8.5 but I can honestly see it getting a 9.2 witch is incredible for a late 60s book
I have send an x-men annual 14 to be pressed and signed by Arthur Adams. I was sure it would have received a 9.8, no it received 9.6. I send two x-men many years ago ( no pressing was offered back them) the two received 9.8
I collect mark jeweler variants and I had a perfect copy of GL 201 and it came back a 9.6! 🤬. Lol. Same thing happened with a DC label death of Alex dewit by Major Force. Same thing. It must be something about green lantern keys.
In my first batch I got back just a few weeks ago, I got a PX edition of Venom 3 back as an 8.0 and 8.5. This was before my comic shop had a trusted presser they went to. He was shocked as he didn’t think they were that bad. He did admit though that those things are handed out like pamphlets, so no bag or board. I still like that I have them, but man was that likely a waste to get them graded.
I think the reason why Batman #423 gets bigger and bigger is because people really like this story. I mean, it's one of my favorite Batman stories ever, I strongly suggest you give it a read, it's fantastic.
