You know how people tend to dislike those that mirror the qualities we don't like in ourselves? People that work with Gege mention that his personality resembles Gojo the most of the entire cast. Anytime he's said a negative comment about the character, I wonder if he's subconsciously projecting himself into the character when making a judgment. It's common for authors to do this (after all, it all comes from our minds when we create).

What’s interesting about about Gojo as a character is that him being the strongest effects him on a character level (are you strongest because you’re Gojo Satoru or are you Gojo Satoru because you’re the strongest?), a story level (Kenjaku had to seal him away because his plan would fail if Gojo was around), and meta level (Gege hates him because he’s so strong it makes writing the story difficult)

@@ThePower1000 Gojo being so strong is not even the problem, the mistake is making Gojo so proactive and present in the story. When there is such a massive powergap between characters the best way to write around it is to put limits in the presence of the OP character. in One Piece Whitebeard is recognized as the strongest so he is barely in it and only brought in during a massive climax of the story. In MHA All-Might is the strongest so they placed limitations on him to make him a support character that cannot be proactive when dealing with villains.

Edit: i'm not saying that gege might not be a good writer, but after he ends this series i want to see if he can create his ideal character and be remotely as good or big as gojo is. i think he might be his masterpiece and he doesn't realise it

Personally it makes sense Why gojo behave’s the way he does, when you’re this powerful you see things quite differently then normal people and they typically won’t take everything seriously unless your put in a situation when it’s needed and him being overpowered does ease the minds of his students, since they never really have to worry about dying/failing since their teacher can catch them when they fall but once he disappears the story becomes more interesting.🤔🐱

  • @ugh5281
    @ugh5281 Год назад +27

if you look at it at surface level, it isn't hard to see why gojo is so popular. he is very likeable right off the bat: he's funny, he's super strong, he's cool and good looking... people love cool OP characters in general, when you add a charismatic personality and good looks to them, it just makes people love them even more. that being said, gojo also has some depth as a character which only adds even more to the likability of his character. he's extremely powerful and on a whole different level from everyone around him to the point where it almost feels like he could be a god however he has a human side to him and he can actually be vulnerable. he's not very emotional but he can be, when you pull the right strings. that vulnerable side ends up being a lot of times the reason why he loses sometimes despite being the strongest, which is interesting. those points are obviously very intentional on gege's part, otherwise he wouldn't have written gojo in such way.

Gojo won my heart when he referenced digimon.
I knew he was going to lose against sukuna, but the way gege went about it was anticlimantic and disappointing.
Gojo to me was always a nuanced character, but gege reduced him to the same simply childish mentality of kashimo and his first world problems about being the strongest and lonely.
Gojo talking about how much fun he had, and showed absolutely no concern for his students or the world at large. In fact, gojo only showw concern over sukuna and how lonely that sociopath may or may not feel. What a crazy limbo conversation, it felt like I was ready bad fanfic.

Having an all-powerful character in a film or series can be really hard to do because we normally never experience humans who are like that and so it's near impossible to write them. However, ALL the other jujutsu sorcerers are pretty powerful too and they ALL have a fault or weakness. He's all powerful, not all perfect.
He has human tendencies and personalities:
    1. He gets angry when the curses go after certain people, which means he also CARES about those people.
    2. He strives to protect his students' youth.
    3. He wants to train them to be as strong or stronger than him so that they can fight side by side.
    4. He's super silly and cheeky.
I do think that if you only look at the 'all-powerful' and 'hot guy' parts of Gojo you can see why he's overhyped. But the interesting thing with him(aside from these) in my opinion is that he knows he's powerful and states it and the way HE USES THAT POWER. That makes you like him all the more for the decisions he makes. He's only fought like twice in season 1, and that was when the students were REALLY in danger and when that one curse tried to assassinate him. His personality may be extra cocky but that hides a lot, his analyses of what's happening in and outside the school, his observations of his students and what's best for them, his feelings towards his triumphs and losses and the 3 clans' views. And he probably wants to fight Sukuna because he's the strongest sorcerer and Sukuna is the strongest curse and he hasn't had a match that came close to his power level in a while, and also probably coz the others literally wouldn't stand much of a chance . 🤷‍♀️ He states facts but also only when they're really needed.
You do see his humanity and in all that, and I think having that kind of commentary, 'Gojo is all powerful, BUT...' finally makes the viewer think on whether they would really want all the power...cause he's got a tonne of responsibility on himself, towards the people he cares about, towards his goals and towards the world,
    coz he's the strongest.🤷‍♀️

Gojo is iconic because he has so many different sides. He is cocky and strong. But his internal voice is always calm and not funny at all. At the same time in s2 we’ve seen him completely unhinged and high. But he is also a father figure who loves his students. Some characters in the show say that he is irresponsible. AND AT THE SAME TIME he is the most responsible out of all, because entire world depends on him. He acts laidback and then he says that it was HIS CHOICE to become a teacher. That’s why he has so much depth and interesting aspects. So well written character it’s insane

Maki has lived surrounded by people who told her to 'know your place, shut up, and behave'... with the inevitable result. She refuses, she says no, she won't be shut up. The tension between herself and her sister could be the mental tension of women everywhere; in the end, to free yourself, you have to contend with yourself first.
By comparison, Gojo is the kid who got all the silver cups at school without even trying. The popular guy all the girls want to date. The guy who everyone puts on a pedestal and desires attention from even though he may not be as good a person as everyone thinks.
I don't think Gege 'hates' Gojo, I think Gege 'wants to be' Gojo... but for whatever reason, cannot be him. To the shy, retiring and fragile, Gojo is the goal... and also intensely annoying. That makes the Gojo-Sukuna fight much more interesting!

  • @da_001

ill tell you why gege hates gojo. and i dont even main JJK as my main manga:
1.gojo is blessed yet spoiled. gege hates this (he mentions this somewhere)
2.gojo is a good person at heart. gege hates this (considering how much he glazes the villians its obvious)
3.gojo is popular with people. i doubt gege is since he has to write his manga indoors majority of the time.
4.gojo is the ceiling of power in geges own creation. gege hates this because he shows lack of foresight in his own writing prowess. a evident weakness of his skils.
i can go on and on..,
see as how gege treated go/jo after his fight with sukuna ( fraudkuna imo) and how he character assassinated him, PLUS offscreened him; its evident gege created a character which he personally can never live up to be and thus he hates his own creation.

I think this video is kind of pointless. Jjk starts off with Gojo doing his thing and destroying everyone for a little bit but then prison realm happens and the he’s gone for 2/3rds of the story. When he gets unsealed he instantly gets challenged by Sukuna, the one person who can actually challenge him.
Gojo is held back and gets checked a lot throughout most of the story. His existence is not one dimensional in terms of power at all.
I do appreciate the character analysis though, it was insightful and well written.

I hate when people hate on this series because Yuji not being the typical open shonen battle protag and Gojo being op and carrying. He's literally like Gandalf in The Hobbit and LotR. He does carry and sideline sometimes but that doesnt make him bad or the story bad. Based on what Akutami has said I believe that Yuji will be OP eventually (and already is sometimes) but up until then the OP mentor isn't a bad character type and Akutami has done great with him so far and taken him out of the story when he needed to.
Nanami is also probably my fav. I'm sad, not going in depth for others sake. 😢

We're at the point where people are questioning if Yuji is actually the main character. I can see why the author may have some concerns about the story they wanted to tell. It actually is a bad thing when cool, strong characters are always cool and strong when your intent is to tell a serious story about strife and challenge.
It's a cheaper type of entertainment to tell a story about invincible characters overcoming inferior challengers compared to the payoff of a long journey of weaker characters rising to the occasion. The appearances look like they were inspired by Bleach, but the narrative reminds me more of Hunter x Hunter.

As a personal theory, I don't think Gege is totally wrong about Gojo not having a personality, although Gege has something against Gojo (which is hilarious) he is the author after all.
I think Gege's comment revolves more around Gojo's identity, which has been in question for a long time. Gojo has always been "the strongest" since he was a born, he based his entire personality on his power when he was a teenager, and as a teenager he has made it clear thousands of times that he used to think that nothing was more important than power. Even after Toji's battle, nothing was more important than strength to him, becoming much stronger in less than a year, until his identity is questioned by Geto and this is what I base my statement on. The famous question, "are you the strongest because you're satoru gojo or are you satoru gojo because you're the strongest?", Geto questions Gojo's identity here, and technically also his personality, which just as Gege said, is not really " real", being based on his strength. What Geto is trying to question is that if his strength is the only thing he is, if perhaps he would not be anyone or anything without his strength, he questions if his personality is something geniune or is it something that it simply arose from trying to separate the identity with the strongest with what he really is, but Gojo cannot answer that, because he was always only the strongest. Anyway, Gojo changed after that, right? not what he is, but his ideals and in Gege's own words, he matured. I think that's enough to know that Gojo does have a real personality, but the conflict of identity is still there even in the present, the way in which for everyone the name Satoru Gojo only means power, not a human behind it, not that Gojo really cares, he's a pretty simple man after all, and Gege knows it, because he's the author. That's why I said that I didn't agree 100% with Gege, since Gojo clearly has a personality, but it's a personality that grew based on not what he is but what he represents,
I think Gojo's identity is something that's going to be important to the recent fight in the manga, either he wins/loses as Satoru Gojo, himself, or he wins/loses as who he's always been, Satoru Gojo, the strongest. Or I don't know, maybe I'm being delulu and I'm the one misinterpreting Gojo's character instead of Gege, I'm just trying to find a logical explanation for Gege's comment that fits the story instead of just hating on Gojo,

And yet you still manage to have quite a complex density with Gojo. Always catalogued as the strongest and yet he lost his best friend , failed to save or avoid most of the situations he was involved in.
Because of all this he is probably the loneliest character in Jujutsu Kaisen. Hence his contempt for weaker people (in the flashback arc). He never needed to relate to people, these people always used him. The weaker ones don't know what it's like to be him. He is not the nicest person in the world but people have always related to him not because of his presence but because of what he could do. That's why he gets along well with Geto. Geto was a contrast. He apologized for Gojo, he was the one who assumed that not defending the weak was stupid. More than just a friend, Geto was what connected Gojo to humans.
That's why he identify more with fictionalized characters (the same ones from the movies that Itadori consumes in the first episodes).
That's why the flashback arc is so important. Gojo has to witness the last days of a 15 year old girl. She doesn't have the chance to live a normal life because the jujutsu world didn't give her that "power". If strength is all that matters then this girl lives no longer matter. So Gojo can enter someone else's world for a few days.
At that moment that character is the most like gojo. Born destined for something. Marked by society. Exactly like gojo. So the whole idea that strength is choice is challenged. Even with strength and power she died. And Gojo himself admits that he was not saddened by her death. Because he can't waste time with those actions. And that's where the complex comes in. Him wanting to be something and the shadow of his actions. For gojo in both his consistent and unconscious he is neither. He is as relentless and strong a monster as he is a caring teacher who wants to take care of the next generation. He is a man who kills a father while promising to take care of his son .
Gojo in Akutami's words is a paradox of strength. Gojo is the height of strength, of power, but he never wins. Yes he killed Tojo but consequently riko died and lost his best friend. He humiliates Gojo but he doesn't spoil any information. He stops Hanami but they extract Sukuna fingers. In this universe we think that strength is everything. But Gojo even with it , he is powerless It is ironic and paradoxical. It's a deconstruction. The binary that gojo presents is strength vs weakness. Some people only recognize him as the strongest and nothing more than that. Even metaphorically his powers,, the limitless, no one can touch him . There is a barrier that distances him. The Domain he has everythinga and yet against Tojo he himself says "when you are given everything, you can do nothing, ironic isn't it?
And then gojo couldn't kill Geto either. Because in the forces of Yin and Yan you cannot destroy the other side, the side that connected you to humans. It's something you have to reconcile yourself to. That's why he had to be a teacher and tahts why that's such a important choice to the character. Because he chose to do that. He sought change to the point of avoiding what happened to Geto. He doesn't want to find someone stronger than him. But someone better than him.

i love this interpretation and makes a lot of sense narratively speaking. i think gege did a good job writing gojo but he could explore his character even further, if he wanted to. after reading hidden inventory and the shibuya incident i always found gojo such a fascinating character. i already liked him in the anime since he was cool and all but getting to know him a bit more and seeing him maturing and changing his philosophy by the end of hidden inventory was special. i hope they do it justice in the anime.

@@impermisto *And Gojo himself admits that he was not saddened by her death*
He was saddened by her death; him making that statement was only during the moment of his power trip against Toji; as in it was in that moment specifically that he did not feel sadness by her death as he wasn't concerned with processing that; but rather, consumed by the newfound awareness and Godlihood he had attained. It wasn't until after the fact that the sadness of her loss hit him

It's crazy how Gege heavily believes Gojo has no personality and just a cocky person but continues to write a story that explains why he's exactly the way he is. Since Birth, he's had a bounty on his head and I assume because of that Gojo was isolated from any forms of outside life since every sorcerer wanted to kill him. This lead Gojo to struggle socially and understand social cues. Not only that the one person who saw more in him then just the strongest, Suguru Geto, went insane and even questioned Gojo on why he was the strongest. Gojo is a layered character.

What I like about Gojo is that he seems to be more analytical than he lets on and that he has strong values he adheres to (being against the conservative side of jujutsu society, wanting to teach his students the best he can and help them get strong so they can face the world, plus change the system from the inside). I also think there's a tragic aspect about him, how despite being the most powerful sorcerer there is he's still kind of lonely (he said his only true friend was Geto, and the kids are more his students than friends while the other sorcerers don't seem to have a close relationship with him). Also, yes, pretty colors go boom is very nice to see.

i think what happened with gojo stemmed JJK 0 that was originally just a oneshot before the manga got picked up so gojo's being too strong shouldn't has been a problem. the root cause is likely to be 0 though considering other things like Yuta was apparently suppose to be the MC from the original source material.

I think the biggest issue that Akutami has to deal with is that he made a character that probably has to die for the story to progress. But at the same time can't because people love him so much. So would we love gojo if he lost his powers and do we love gojo because he's gojo or do we love him because he's the strongest 🤓

  • @onyxcat146

So…… I don’t think Gege was being serious we he made that statement. You can tell by how well written his character is. If he truly hated him it would show in the writing. (And for the people who say it does show remember Gege said that Nanami was his favorite character and look what happened to him).
I think what he might be getting at is that Gojo isn’t very open with people. Even on a meta level we the audience are rarely given access to Gojo’s inner thoughts. There’s a metaphorical and literal distance between him and everyone else. I think there’s a saying that goes you can only truly know yourself through interacting with others. Something like that. But those are just my thoughts.

Why has the manga been complete shit the past several chapters then? It's been mostly people telling you how cool or impossible what Gojo is doing while not really showing many cool things happening. It's pretty obvious Gojo and Sakuna are too powerful for him to write a compelling fight. Another mangaka may be capable of doing so but Gojo is too strong for him to write well once the power level actually maters.
