  • Does your anxiety or OCD make you afraid to leave the house? Do you stay at home to avoid being triggered?
Unfortunately the more you avoid, the bigger your anxiety or OCD can grow. When you don’t leave the house to avoid being triggered, you are at risk of developing Agoraphobia, making it even harder for you to leave the house over time.
In this week’s RUclips video I talk about how to handle the impulse to avoid leaving the house due to your fears and what to do instead.
Don’t let panic scare you and keep you home.

You might be a targeted individual. That's what the perpetrators do whenever you leave the house to go out to eat, the grocery store, or when driving in your car. They purposefully will turn their head and stare at you like a total freak, and then they will stomp the gas to stress you out. But either way I totally understand and I've lived through this myself. Agoraphobia is horrible.

I cant leave my house.... I havent been to a store in months. I switched to grocery delivery even though its expensive. I have no family here. I have true actual panic attacks the moment I get behind the wheel. But I am a mother. So when I have to drive my child to school and pick him up, I am a full blown panic crisis the entire time. Racing heart, cant breathe, hand and feet are tingling and twitching. Every time I leave my house feels 100% like life or death.

Anxiety presented itself very early in the form of ocd which I still deal with as well. I order all the things I need. I have a safe person. All the avoidance behaviors you can imagine. There is no help for me unless I figure out how to help myself as I cannot afford therapy.

I tell myself that if I lived in a more remote area I would leave the house more often because there would be less people but I realise through your video that I would be making my world smaller again. I find it so easy to create a calm world inside my home but when I leave the house I almost always come across someone who is scary (aggressive, shouting etc lots of drugs around here). I know I need to face it but I guess I need to change my mindset in dealing with it. It’s a constant battle for me to just go outside but I know it will get worse if I don’t. Thank you for your video, its good to know I’m not alone in a world filled with people who seem to so easily fit into society.

I live in an extremely remote area and unfortunately it's just the same. I worry because there's still the "what if someone sees you". Even in an area where I can see for miles and I can see that there's nobody there I still worry people are watching me with binoculars or have set up secret cameras and are going to laugh at me. It's one of the reasons I struggle to do daily exercise as despite living where I do I just can't stop imagining that there's people filming me and watching me.
Even when I was around 10 we moved into a new house and I would wear a swimming costume in the shower and put a towel over myself to cover me when I used the bathroom as I deeply believed there was cameras in there.
It's so weird to look back on how paranoid I've been almost all my life.
I left high school super early, I've left college courses, uni degree, over 40 jobs... over something that doesn't exist.

I have had bowel issues for over 30 years. I found out that I have GERD and did not know something as simple as GERD could upset my system so much. Once I started getting medication and figuring out problem foods (which is a very very long list), I got to a point where what I eat does not cause me pain anymore, but for decades I would have painful bowel movements that would last hours daily along with sore stomach. What you are experiencing may either be psychosomatic symptoms or somaticpsycho systems or a combination of both. I have experienced these things many times in my life, especially when traveling on airplanes and knowing I'm going to be trapped in the security check in line and the boarding/deplaning lines. This is when psychosomatic symptoms kick in and the fear of being trapped and crapping my pants makes my stomach tight and starts wreaking havoc. Sometimes though even when I'm not worried if I eat something that makes my stomach start to feel bad the opposite happens, somaticpsycho symptoms where the tummy ache gives me anxiety even though I didn't have it before, now I start to worry about what it is going to effect in my schedule for the day because it creates a feedback loop to where now I'm feeling bad, now I feel even worse because the worrying starts and intensifies the sensation in my stomach all over again.
There's only three techniques that have helped me deal with this in my life. 1) Meditation & breathing techniques, if you try to take deep breathes and breathe deep in your stomach in your abdomen so that your chest doesn't rise or fall with your breathes this basically tricks your body into thinking its asleep and relaxes it, but other breathing patterns have been helpful. Sometimes when I have been stuck on airplanes I close my eyes and breathe in and out and in and out repeatedly slowly, 4 seconds inhale, 7 seconds exhale. This is something that takes practice. Andrew Huberman has a great video explaining meditation and how focusing on external things can sometimes calm your internal sensations down by forcing your body to take the focus off your internal sensations that I recommend you watch. Meditation is a low skill entry thing, but high skill ceiling activity. You can really get a lot better at meditation than people ever realize. 2) Exposure, exposure, exposure therapy the more I do something the more it becomes normal and the less nervous I get when I do it every time. I push myself to take bigger and bigger steps starting with baby steps. 3) The TAP method has worked for me. I am not very good at it, but if you read about it you can pinch between your index and thumb finger for example and repeat phrases like "I am fine, everything is good" to yourself in your head when you are out walking or whatever and it can help ground you and settle your stomach. One time a lady looked at me with an annoyed look on her face when I was walking down the street and it sent my body into a mini panic attack. I felt my stomach react immediately and it felt like I had to have a bowel movement. I was a half a mile away from my house, so at least 10 minutes away from a toilet. I used the TAP method along with a breathing technique combined and within seconds I grounded myself, calmed down, and the stomach issue went away and I could have stayed outside for another hour after that.
Your stomach can hurt for so many reasons and I have seen 7 doctors including 3 GI doctors, so I know how crappy doctors can be, but figuring out what your trigger foods are can save you a lot of grief. The only things I can eat safely are plain fresh meats, some low lactose cheeses like shredded mozerella, parmasean, and harvarti, grains, and unseasoned/unoiled vegetables. I can't even eat all sorts of veggies like onions, garlic, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers, etc. I eat gluten free bread with two eggs for breakfast and a glass of soy milk, a turkey wrap for lunch with real turkey meat that I freeze from cooking thanksgiving turkeys in my deep freezer, some melted mozerella, a pickle, and some mustard (both the pickle and mustard brands I use do not have any seasonings in them, mustard typically has tumeric and paprika in it which will upset my stomach), and I have a nice big salad with olive oil on it. Then for dinner I have chicken and rice soup that I make home made with carrots and broccoli in it usually. I make the stock from scratch as well because the store stock has onion in it. I know these meals to be my "safe" meals and even though they are very boring, I know that if I eat these things that I will not have any stomach issues so if I have things to do or places to go I eat my safety meals.

This was one of the most helpful videos I've seen about agoraphobia and anxiety. Short and straight to the point and it was nice to have the blunt truth that this idea of home being safe is a lie. I'm currently very far away from home doing university work and it's terrifying to step outside of my hotel room, but I realise now that the hotel room is just my temporary "safe" space and I need to extend that safe space to include the rest of the world.
I struggle with emetophobia and to hear someone explicitly talk about feeling sick when leaving the house was very validating, I feel like nausea and sickness is a forgotten panic symptom sometimes but it can be so debilitating. I think I'm ready to finally face the outside and go get some lunch now, thank you for this!

  • @queenchiomaofficial

Such a great video and such helpful tips. Remember that we don’t always have to feel like doing these things, the key is this...sometimes we have to ‘do it afraid’. This is the way that we conquer anxiety by doing the things that we fear. Whether that’s baby steps, big steps or gigantic steps. If we wait for fear to leave entirely we might be stuck forever! If you have setbacks try again the next day or two days later. Keep affirming yourself that things will get better as they will. Also keep praying as God knows exactly how to give you the courage, the healing and the encouragement that you need to beat this! 🙏🏽❤️

For me it's more like I have a "social" or an "away from home" timer, that I set before I leave, and as it runs down, the urge to go home intensifies. There's absolutely no problem if I'm doing preplanned stuff, but the timer goes down very quickly when I run out of stuff to do. For example, I have no problem going camping, or staying at a friend's house, but the next morning it's like home, home, home. Unless I knew I was going camping for 2 or 3 nights then it would be no problem because I would have prepared my brain for it.
Or if I go to run some errands, then as soon as I'm done I'm trying to get home immediately; there'd be no such thing as spontaneously chilling on a park bench for an hour afterwards, or going for a coffee if I hadn't planned it.
It's like I estimate how long I'll be away from home, and what I have to do, and then I set an imaginary timer in my head, and if I'm lolling around outside, doing nothing, it's like my brain starts thinking: _"What are you doing out here, hanging around, when you could be at home relaxing? Go home, go home!"_

The past couple of years have been such an isolated time in my life, working from home for years already, then Covid, then just finding a hard time getting back into the world at all. It is scary when you realize you have started feeling unsafe in so many situations outside your home. But taking small steps is such a helpful approach. Something that helped me is just making myself go for a walk early in the morning most days, even if its just a short walk, its still a good step and a good way to start the day. Also, be kind and patient with yourself and set realistic goals. You may not feel well enough to go to a big gathering for hours on end, but what about a coffee and walk with a friend (or by yourself is nice too).....This is the approach I am taking and I feel a little bit better every day.

It’s crazy how I didn’t even realize i was building these tendencies and me growing attached to my home specifically my room. It all came a head to me when my Girlfriend wanted me to come with her and her friends today but i was “too tired” and passed, she was upset with me and as she left started to cry where she later explained it seems I don’t look excited or want to do anything she wants. All this time i’ve been dealing with this in my head and now seeing it effect my loved ones hurts…

Agoraphobia isn't just staying at home. "Fear of leaving the house" is a separate condition. I have "fear of leaving the house" not agoraphobia ever since getting covid 3 times, 5 weeks sick each time. 😮‍💨. This video is great, I'm going to try the solutions at the end. You're right, the truth is I'm just as safe everywhere and I'm going to make a list.

I have started getting this feeling of uneasy when I have to leave my house. I have a routine of get up and go to the gym but then I have to go right home. I have to plan my trips out but I only go three places: gym, Walmart, and home. Just before covid I was getting a little better about leaving but since covid, I am worse. I think about how far a place is and that is where my anxiety/ ocd start getting control of me. And from there I just start to panic as time gets closer to me having to leave. I will come up with reasons why I should leave and if I have too, I will have a panic attack.

It really sucks having this agoraphobia thing whilst having a little socialite, active & inquisitive little boy. I’ve been taking him for little walks in the bush later in the day but then we just keep driving if I see lots of people are walking that same bush track. It really helps when I have friends or my partner with me going places, but I also know I need to fix the core wound because it’s been like this for years.

30 years of anxiety and staying at home and avoiding everything, started tiny and grew and grew and grew; with it came many other issues that spawned because of it all, it is a web of a mess and so mis understood. People who have never experienced these things think they are almost silly, in your head, just get past them and think more positive, its easy etc etc. They have no idea how life ruining this stuff is.

I get the cold sweats also before work but if I do not have to work that day I am usually more ok. I would rather give up my entire life to never have to be trapped at work again. The catch is that I want to work really bad and I get excited when the anxiety is no longer there. I call off a lot and it makes the anxiety worse because I feel like I am failing in my life. Hey, so sorry to hear this. Yes going to the doctor is a good idea as you might be low on something such as iron, vitamin B or Vitamin D. There was an Author that had anxiety who wrote the book ‘Play it Away’ which I highly recommend, and he found out that he was low on vitamin B. I found out that I was very low on vitamin D. So sometimes when I take vitamin D or iron I feel so much better when out and about. Other than this, do you think that you could go out with an Uber? Or start going out with someone who you feel safe to be around. I found going out with my ex-boyfriend, my mum, my brother or someone who I just felt safe to be around really helped me to conquer a lot of my fear. I also encourage you to write a list of why you need to go out i.e. for fresh air, to socialise, to get food, to get natural Vitamin D, to meet new people etc. Look at this list daily and journal daily too, as these things will help to reduce a lot of anxiety in your life, along with 10 mins of exercise. If nothing works just try and get fresh air by walking a little bit outside your door or in your garden...as this will help you build momentum for when you do eventually go out properly. Hope this all helps.

I avoid touching certain things because then ill have to sit there touching it until i feel like I’ve done it right. Also when im exposed to something that might trigger me i feel like it infects everything around me, especially my clothes so i have to put it straight in the clothing pile or constantly wipe my glasses if im wearing them- or retie my hair everytime i see/hear a word im uncomfortable with. Sometimes i even result to twitching after getting frustrated when i have to keep touching things. I really wanna know your input on this so i could know if i should ask my mom for help. When I get fear, I am afraid that it will be too cold and rain will appear, and then I will be locked outside and not able to come in… When I go outside, I have this fear that I won’t be able to come in back inside that night. That’s while I’m living in France… Because it’s so cold here. I hated LA County, but I found it much easier to go outside. I cold weather makes me afraid to leave the home, because I have a fear I won’t be able to get back in.
When my back hurts, I have a fear of leaving the home, that I will have a back spasm and will be debilitated on the street. It has happened to me before, where my back went out, and I was facedown on the street in the pouring rain… Moments like this makes me afraid to leave the home. And also when I was in LA, people would often threatened to stab me, and I got scared of people. Sometimes in LA, I would be out with friends, and somebody at a bar would offer me drugs… I don’t like to socialize with people because of this. I don’t like leaving my home where I feel warm and safe.
Especially if I’m getting close to my period… I will be afraid because my period to get so intense that even if I take painkillers, I am rolling on the floor feeling like I’m going to die.
I always had an anxiety and OCD to go to high school and junior high school… But that’s because I was severely bullied, and sometimes boys would beat me up or throw food at me… I enjoyed going to college, though, and would get depressed if I wasn’t in school …
Hanging out with friends though does definitely trigger my anxiety. I don’t like seeing friends, even though I love them. I get anxiety for some odd reason and don’t know why.

Unless it's in a taxi or car, I can't leave the house because of ever-worsening cynophobia. I not only fear dogs; I also despise them. Read what happened today in Detroit near a school
    with a pack of dogs.

I can't leave the house because I'm afraid to forget to close the water faucet or leave the stove on.

Can I give you honest advice? Give your life to Jesus. I suffered tremendously from this until I realized “Hey, Jesus decided this isn’t the case so there’s no possibility it would’ve ever happened”

My roommate to a T! He NEVER leaves the house and getting unemployment to stay in school. He leaves his door open and you’re always feeling like he’s ‘just’ there’. Personally, I’m understanding but this is so irritating to be around. At least get out and take a walk! Something other then being around constantly. I’m moving because of it.

Now imagine how debilitating, irritating and awful it is for HIM. He's definitely going through worse shit than being annoyed at someone for always being around. If you think you're being understanding, you're not.
