I really appreciate that you aren't blowing sunshine up people's butts about owning a dog. It's a serious commitment to a being that has feelings as deep as yours. I tell 1st timers to consider if they are ready for a child..if that's a yes then go ahead and adopt a furbaby. Also, the best chew toy for a puppy is another puppy, so consider if you can afford 2. Double the mess if they misbehave but they also have each other when you have to be away from them. Cleaning messes is easy. Consoling your stressed dog because you had to work late, left it alone, and its routine got messed up by your desertion takes way longer.

I don't agree with getting two puppies at the same time. If you do that they will bond with each other and not you, which would make focusing and listening to you a horrible task to do

I appreciate your honesty. I've been looking for advice about adopting a dog. I live up the block from an animal shelter. I won't make decision without getting as much information as possible.

This is currently me!!! There’s a shelter about 2min away from me - I have the time and ability to care for a dog - but I need to understand everything before I commit - to make sure it’s what I want to do. Bc I’m don’t want to just re traumatize the animal and be taking it back.

This is SO important. Many people need to watch this video.. I see so many mistakes relating to this topic.
I used to have a dog for a few years.. I want to adopt a new one, but I'm about to join the army and will be done with it in two to three years, so I know it's not a good time for one atm.

I'm late to the video, but I wanted to thank you for making it. I'm awaiting the arrival of a dog that I officially adopted from a shelter a month ago, and my mind is creating all kinds of worries. What if he doesn't like me, what if I don't connect to him like I did to my previous dogs, etc. As you say, our minds can be a real pain the ass sometimes.
I think this video was just what I needed to hear, to help me enter the relationship (which will start in a few days) with the right frame of mind, rather than getting carried away with worries or unrealistic expectations.
I especially appreciated being reminded that the adoption doesn't really begin until you get them home, that you didn't really feel connected to 4 out of 5 of your dogs until 6 months in, and that it takes a while (like in any relationship) for you to get to know each other and for the dog to trust you. Makes perfect sense, and I appreciate the reminder.
    Thanks!

Glad I stumbled on this video. Truthfully I've been looking for someone/something to decide for me about getting a dog, whether they pros outweigh the cons. But the reality seems to be what I expected- it truly is like caring for a kid. There's gonna be as many great time as sucky times, and people need to decide whether they're willing to endure the rough moments to get to experience the good ones. I'm still deciding, but this was a reminder to not rush a decision that could lead to a miserable outcome :')

I just stumbled upon this video. I know it’s 4 years old however, it’s true. So true. I have adopted 4 dogs that I thought would work for me. Let me explain. I’ve had small dogs in my childhood and well into my adulthood. I decided I want a big dog now. Unfortunately my mentality was not ready for it. My body was not ready for it. I’m relatively an inactive person. Yet I ended up with a Husky, GSD, and hound dog. They didn’t work. I re surrendered all of them. They weren’t the right fit and the GSD I was allergic to. So I took probably 3 months and then out of no where looked online. Found a miniature poodle mix and fell in love. Went to meet him and it was great. I’ve now had him for a while now. I am very happy. Not only was it the size and the needs of the dog but it was my mentality that needed to change. My schedule and my willing to put a dog before myself. All in all, this video is very true.

Oh my.. I should've seen this video 8 months ago! I was so not mentally prepared. It took me 5 days to be like "she hates me, but I like her.. we'll be fine." Then 3 months of "oh my freaking god what the hell is happening.. this beast came from the fires of hell to punish me for not having my shit together!"
Then the 4th month wishing it never happened, crying while lying on the sidewalk with a completely out of control adolescent dog next to me, wondering how I could make it through this... completely giving up on the idea of any form of control on the situation.
And then the 5th through 8th month taking everything a little step at a time actually making some really good progress 😀

Right! I live alone - and love it - but everyone assumes I must be sad and miserable - and pushing me to get a dog. I love dogs don’t get me wrong - but this video helps validate my fears. These are all the reasons I haven’t adopted yet! I love not having to touch anyone else’s vomit + poo !! 😭

Love this. We had a sleep over after a meet and greet and fell in love with a beautiful dog named Tahlulla. Shes mixed breed. But her history was someone adopted her from Houston humane society. They sold her on Craig's list to an elder couple mentally incapable of taking care of her. She never saw the outdoors. Nothing. The foster mom had her for 5 weeks. We had her since Sunday late afternoon till 330 pm today..😭 Love her to death but she is really reactive to strangers, kids, other dogs, noises. Yesterday was the worst due to the coronavirus stay at home order here. Too many stimulants. Had to give her back. My husband and I are having a hard time tonight about it. But shes with her loving certified trainer foster. And was excited to see her. Glad you made this video. With the coronavirus shelters here are only appointment only. No walking down to see diff dogs.☹ wish we would have saw this before. But no matter what she is still a great dog and loves learning. Very hard right now

      @ambergarcia690 4 года назад

Oh if you could see her picture. Shes like a model dog. Amber colored eyes. A slight brendel color coat, bat ears that flopped over. So willing to learn. Truly heart broken .please make a video about this experience

AWESOME VIDEO AND ADVICE! I had my Precious Furbaby for 16 Wonerful years got him when he was 2 weeks old. I can relate to Everything you said, what I would add is you also have to take in the fact when they start aging you have to be mentally ready and Willing to take care of them and Don't give them up because they are now old.
My precious doggy lost his vision and hearing at 15, and at 16 years was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy(debilitating) and I had to make the HEARTWRENCHING Decision to put him to rest in my home on August 18 2022. Magic FOREVER IN MOMMY'S HEART🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤

What gets me is the connection with Tahlulla the foster dog. She fell in love with us immediately and vice versa. And with everyone home cuz the stay at home order for this virus crap was stressful for her. She had never been outside till she was with her foster and rescue.she did great but we live in an apt. She wasnt crate trained. I wouldn't do that longer than 1 hour. I'm a house wife with anxiety.but did fine till yesterday. My husband stayed home today for me and we love her so much I just with she wasn't so reactive to lots of things. Which tought us. She learned new noises, situations, people, routines in a short time and we learned from her too. The facility is Friends for Life in Houston, Texas. Non kill facility. Truly amazing. I will neve go any where else in Houston unless they are a non kill facility just sad

Thanks so much for making this video! I loved your story about how four out of your five dogs weren't exactly love at first sight. You are so right about giving it time to fully learned how to live with your new furry friend and to trust one another. We just recently adopted a rescue dog from a neighboring country (we live in Europe) and had no chance of meeting it prior to the dog being delivered to us. Things are going good but I am so thankful to hear that it doesn't have to be a bliss all the time, especially in the beginning.

I was a breeder for 28 years. I had a dog for 8 years that passed away.m recently. With all my obedience trophies i am feeling like i did when i was walking down the aisle. I am still grieving losing my dog. I need this dog. One minute i am excited then i remember this is a puppy. My dog had 8 years of training. Now i am back to chewed socks, housebreaking and it is a big responsibility. And yes i worry that he won't like me. Or i won't like him. I guess in a few days I will find out. My last dog and I were like soul mates. 💔 well i will sleep in two more mornings then here i go again.

I had a huge mental breakdown last night after this virus crap. I'm in an apartment and there's a group of 15 kids young and preteen. And Maintenance and more people..aghg our sleep over started 330pm sunday..till 330 today. Husband and I are still sad because no matter how reactive she was. She loved more than any dog I owned before and she is so smart and easy to train. I have bad anxiety and I'm a house wife, and potentially caregiver for the dog. Need advice
