- The present mansion house, Plas Glynllifon, was built in 1836-48 to the designs of Edward Haycock, a Shrewsbury architect, and succeeded at least three previous houses on the site. The original building predated a rebuilding c.1600, which itself was rebuilt in 1751. That house, a 'moderate-sized brick mansion', was destroyed by a major fire in 1836. The rebuilding that followed and an extension in 1889-90 largely form the house that exists today.
The house is a neoclassical 3-story building with an attached lower service courtyard to the west and an asymmetrical 13-bay south-facing facade dominated by a central hexastyle pedimented portico. It is built of stone with rendered elevations under a slate roof with rendered chimney stacks topped by molded cornices and an Italianate water tank.
Glynllifon was the seat of the Glynn family until 1700 when it passed to the Wynn family of Bodvean. Sir Thomas John Wynn became the 1st Baron Newborough in 1776 and Glynllifon passed down the family to Frederick George Wynn, the 3rd Lord Newborough's youngest son.
The house is now in rough condition with renovation projects to be unsuccessful.

Steve those were resin cast floral casts. They were probably repairing wood or plaster that had many of the same.
That painting on the floor I recognized as Marie Antoinette Queen of France. "Antoinette with the Rose" the artist escaped the guillotine beheading by painting this portrait. I was thrilled to see this painting in your video.

The Pink items you questioned are parts of the plaster medallions placed above many of the Crystal ceiling light fixtures, they were included in many of the videos and photos you took. You could use an interior designer or architect on these explorations.

The smaller the windows the lower the status of the occupant. Normally servants had the topmost rooms with sparse basic furniture and smallest windows. Narrow basic stairs will be ones used by the servants. Enjoyed the video very much.

Hey Steve welcome to the UK! The slot machine was named for a board game we play here called “Cluedo” I believe you have the exact same game in the US but you guys call it “Clue”. It’s is a beautiful mansion and I never knew it was there!! I hope it gets fully restored and brought back to life. It’s amazing. We have some amazing buildings here in the UK and the architecture is stunning in these old buildings. Much prefer it to the modern building tbh. That room with just a shower is called a wet room, usually found in houses with disabled people. But most bathrooms over here have bath, shower, sink and toilet all together. The wet room could have been a more modern addition.
I just want to say that I recently discovered your RUclips and I've been absolutely lost in it. Your content is amazing and has made me realize that I have a newfound love for abandoned building exploration. Thank you for sharing your adventures!

I've seen that quite a bit in old places like this. Apparently it was a thing in the earlier centuries, although no idea as to why.

I would question that it is abandoned. Electricity and water still on and one of your drone views showed a lot of building materials ready to use. Also the cleanliness of some of the rooms. A joy to view, but again wondering if someone doesn’t now own this property and trying to get the place organised again.
I thought the exact thing!! And when they found the room with the hot plate and stuff pretty much about convinced me, and then the absolutely spotless bathroom!! Just too much stuff for there not to be someone there.

This place was abandoned for a long time, but is no longer abandoned. It’s being fixed up and you got permission to be there. Why not just be honest? The place is spectacular. I think most would be happy it’s getting a second chance. To be able to see inside a place like that is incredible. Just be honest. Who cares?! Acting is definitely not your thing. Love your channel and will look forward to your next adventure. Just be you.
Such a palace needs pockets that are deeper than the pockets of a banker... probably was purchased by a BigPharma executive, after the profiteering they have made in the last two years selling us "vaccines" costing them 2 cents to produce, for $150 a pop, while hiding the fact that those did not provide any protection, indeed, more risk than anything else

Plas Glynllifon is a grand neo-classical mansion built in the 1830/40s by Lord Newborough and sits on the site of a series of earlier houses and at the heart of an historical estate which exerted a profound influence over the landscapes and communities of Caernarfonshire for centuries.
In 1948 the estate was sold to a timber merchant and in 1954 the house and park were sold to Caernarfonshire County Council, the buildings later transferred to Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor.
In 1969 Plas Glynllifon played host to the Prince of Wales Investiture Ball. The mansion has lain empty for several years after a previous attempt to create a wedding venue failed before the Williams' took on the site. It has recently been bought by a Property developer from Manchester.
Thank you for this update. ☺️☺️☺️. I felt certain someone had possession of the property- especially with running water and electricity in certain places. The home has not been “abandoned”, but it is certainly in disrepair. One source said the mansion was not built properly, and definitely not maintained. I think the current owners should auction off the art and furniture, and pull the structure down- then turn the whole thing into a park. It’s too big to care for, and far too expensive to keep it operational. I suspect it’s always been that way.

@@corablue5569 Tear it down? Are you joking? Somebody with money can save this place! I have watched numerous videos of people that have bought castles and restored them. It would be a real shame for someone to tear it down!
I was a bit disappointed that someone would cover all the wood floors with what looked like thin, gross, red carpet. And the ceilings didn't have the detailing and fancy mouldings that most castles I've watched have. The only part of this that was really impressive was the grand entrance. They didn't even keep the bathrooms to match the period of the building. It just looks like whoever had it before didn't really care if it was kept looking original or not. It could be brought back to it's original glory if they wanted to. But, if a property developer bought it they probably won't.
@@corablue5569 That's a good point ~ But so many amazing building materials could be re-used in a new structure of some sort ~ Some of the furniture is so massive that it's hard to imagine how they even got it up to the upper floors ~ I can imagine that in those days there were carpenters and carvers who were hired to build such magnificent pieces on site ~ Light fixtures - railings ~ art ~ plumbing fixtures ~ fancy plaster pieces ~ furniture ~ tiles ~ statues etc. Could all be recreated into a new building for a resort - hotel - or venue ...I guess we'll see 🤔
I stayed there with school as a kid in the 90s. It was used as an educational retreat before falling into disrepair. The rooms look partly renovated when one of many subsequent owners tried to develop the site into a hotel. There’s also one or two ghost stories associated with the place.

I stayed there on a Welsh language school trip in 1982 and haven’t seen it since then and remembered the staircase and hall vividly. Amazing.
Hi Steve, those objects you found on top of the table 4:37 are plaster casts. They are typically installed on walls or ceilings by the Plasters. They are ornaments. This is becoming a lost Trade. The Plasterers would make these and then either attach them using lime or by mechanically attaching them by nailing them into place. My Uncle was a Master Plasterer. He taught me allot. Peace

Love plasterwork - all imitations pale to the real thing. Plaster required a lot more artistry and skill, but it allowed for incredible flexibility (perfect curves, etc.)

Those red painted items at the start are plaster decorations, perhaps moulds, and the framed illustrations are Victorian/Edwardian era cartoons, perhaps later reproductions. In fact most of the paintings and prints look like reproductions, or of low quality. Some of the furniture and statues will be valuable though.
The crests are either from the Wynn Baronets of Bodvean or Barons Newborough, or perhaps invented for the hotel/wedding development?

The narrow stairs are for staff, no point wasting money on their comfort or safety. The house must have had a huge staff, that courtyard for horse drawn delivery and other servant activities. Looks like that wing was completed in 1890.
The 'dungeon' is a provisions store, they didn't have refrigeration back then..

Don’t forget the key he found, it probably goes to the gas fireplace to turn it on. I hope he didn’t take it lol.
Those red painted objects are on the ceiling on the chandeliers.. just after he showed them to us and asked what we think they are... after that scene he starts walking through a hall.. pan's up to a light fixture and talks about the light fixture or chandelier as he said...if you look at that light around it... is some molding.. with red pieces in it... those red things he asked what they were.. :)
Though I thoroughly enjoy your videos, I want to point out that turning water faucets can create real damage to the property. Most of time, air pressure has built up over time in the pipes. When you turn the handle that pressure moves thru the line, and water follows. However, many of those lines are weak and can be unstable. Long after you've left...the remaining water can drip (until the pipe is empty) onto the the floor/ceiling below. Please stop turning the faucets. No one is there to monitor the results of your actions. I would hate to hear that you've been charged with a crime and the owners are trying to collect for damages.
I would say, just stay out of somebody's property. Can you imagine how it feels if you would see a video of 2 guys walking in your house and messing with it? An abandoned factory is ok, but these houses. No, stay out.

Also I want to point out, Turning on an old TV can result in a cable bill. Data has long left the resident and now flows to the TV and charges are applied and when the owner doesn't know about data the charges will create an unhealthy credit score. A steady drip of late payments will occur.

North wales is famous for it narrow gauge track train which was one of the very first in the world!

This felt more like a break in than an abandoned home.
They definitely got permission because there's cameras all over the place there. They are remodeling it and do tours and tell you the history of it.
Back in 1973 when the mansion was in the hands of the council I spent a very enjoyable week with school in Glynllifon. For a number of years pupils from I should think all schools in Caernarfon County spent an educationally interesting week in the mansion.
Although some effort was made a number of years ago to make it into a hotel and for a while there was quite a good functions venue there but sadly it didn't last very long. This is probably from when the Immaculate marbled bathrooms and ladies rooms originate.
It is so very sad to see that the building on the whole is in such a bad state of disrepair and that to return it to anywhere near its former glory is going to take years of work and millions of pounds spent.
Such a mansion of historical interest with so many stories and legends associated with it should be protected for everyone to enjoy.
I was disappointed that the inside was actually ugly. I don't mean because of damage or stuff everywhere. It looks like the original beauty is gone other than the stairs. Like it was deliberately changed. Covered wood floors, no fancy details on the ceilings or fancy crown moldings. I'm not sure the green and white tile is original either. Sad.

One can only imagine what it would have been like to have lived there! Unfortunately the amount of money it would cost to restore this to its original condition would be astronomical and I can’t see anyone doing it. If you like that place then you'll really love the original Versailles meaning hundreds of years ago in France there was a wealthy man who had a gorgeous palatial home and later the king who was a friend of his and later became his enemy and executed him copied what he built when he himself had Versailles Palace built .
The video about it is fascinating and he talks about the restoration and how much it costs and will continue to cost .
The gentleman in the video who is responsible for the repairs and upkeep mentions that it was an ancestor of his who had bought it about 200 years ago and started the Restorations .
Fascinating vid and he even goes up inside the coppola and behind it .
I would bet the cost if restoration could go as high at 25 to 35 million. The cost of living there with staff and constant repairs could easily go 200+ thousand per month.
Then the property taxes!!

The ancestors on my mother' side lived on the estate and in 1858 went with Lord Newborogh on his yacht in 1858 round the Mediterranean.
It belonged to Newborough family and in 1951 Chritue's had a week sale,selling marble statues etc.
The house has 44k square feet with still magnificent entrance hall with Narberth columns.Sitting room.on first floor has an organ and leads on to first floor balcony.
Two listed G1 bridhes in front of property and 10 mile wall round it,built in 1832.
My mother remembered parties in the house and Col.Vauhan Wynn who once owned the place.I remember Alice,Dowager Vicountess Hill, daughter of Lod Newbough's sister visiting my home.Guess you could contact Lord Newborough for more info.

This is a Grade1 listed building. Wasn’t abandoned. Was on the market for a while. It’s now been sold to a Manchester developer out of receivership following the failed attempt of developing it into a luxury hotel by Paul and Rowena Williams.
Name omen, in Italian Rowena is pronounced RUINA = Rovina translates as disaster, downfall.
What a beautiful tour through this enchanting castle. With everything still in place although scattered I am surprised that you got in and police were not summoned. Hope that people do not try to go and destroy the antiques and remove family treasures that someone does own. Stay safe guys.

There's been a few failed attempts to bring it back to life. Great to see the new owner will be bringing it back into sustainable use . He bought it off a couple who tried to develop it into a hotel.

Wow what a truly amazing place and still so pristine in some rooms while others were seriously dilapidated. The bathrooms were some of my favorite rooms especially the ones with the stone bath tubs. Those tubs are carved from a single piece of stone per tub. Truly your best explore yet!

Flies don't have nests, most of the time with these amounts, there is a corpse somewhere.
Corpses help spawn flies in big numbers in a short time. Other foods for flies, spread the time much more.
That place looks like someone was updating & living in parts of it, the electricity was even on. Someone may've passed away , wonder if there was any bad smells. A decaying body has a distinct odor. Most will never know but once smelled one would never forget. Flies are a huge red flag to a decaying corpse.

There is Parc Gynllifon that can be visited. It is in the surrounding area of the mansion. "Parc Glynllifon includes miles of paths through woodland, with a slate amphitheatre, a deserted fort, a mausoleum, hidden memorials, fountains and artwork.
There is even an old militia fort - Fort Williamsburg - dating to 1761, built by Sir Thomas John Wynn in the estate grounds when he became Constable of Caernarfon.". This was in the BBC news.

Its being restored from garish 80s hotel renovation by locals. The many signs including FB mentioned it. They let wildlife in leaving entry points open.

@@WLHS So they're gonna make it a hotel? I hope they bring some of it's original beauty back. The wood floors were covered, there was no beautiful details on the ceilings or crown molding and the bathrooms were not kept to the period of the building other than a couple of cast iron tubs. I don't think the green and white checkered floors are original because it looked like the same thing in the bathrooms. I was disappointed in how it looked inside.
@@kimberlyearly8918 I believe it was a hotel in the 80-90s. The local group are trying to restore and are removing the hideous (in current situ) marble. I will look it up as it has a FB page.

Towards the end of the video in the drone footage one of the chimneys had smoke coming from it. It looked like someone was at home. Not sure it’s abandoned just suffering years of neglect by the looks of things. Beautiful stately home. I hope someone manages to save it.
From the looks of this place, yes, it's being renovated.. Slowly but surely.. Something like that would be a humongous undertaking for sure.. Lots of money and time needed..

Buildings and exploration aside its so cool that this is the way you decided to travel. The places youve been i can only dream of
Those little red clay things you saw were unpainted adornments for the outside of the building,usually they are made to look like gargoyles. And usually they adorn the roofline.
Like most of the stately homes that have been sold after the war and not fared well due to blighting of the area they have been used for a variety of purposes. The lives of being a hospital during the WW2, school then religious orders is the usual trajectory. The park is owned by the council and the house failed as a hotel. Everything in it is just second hand stuff. The prints on the wall with all the men are from Punch magazine and are commonplace for collectors of Victorian caricatures of society men at the time. Nothing inside has anything to do with the original families and is just low end filler for the hotel biz. It’s all reproduction mostly. Some of the furniture is 1910 and that is readily available for sale in the UK for easy prices. Especially when it’s awkwardly large . The house is in repossession since 2020.
Astonishing that such a magnificent structure can be in that condition. They had better get that roof seen to, it’s the water getting in that does most of the damage. The woodwork! The doors - solid wood, several inches thick. And here I am in my 1999 built house with crappy Masonite hollow core doors. They just don’t build anything like that anymore. If it can’t be saved I certainly hope they reclaim as much as can be salvaged. The value of that alone would be staggering and at least some elements of the house can continue and be enjoyed by someone.

Those red things that you found were made from a mold and I can see that you did not notice that they went in the ceiling up in the chandeliers they were right there if you look at the video like when you look up at the chandeliers they're stuck right in there LOL
