Phlox is so lovely. Enjoy your enthusiasm, Nicole. Can’t wait to see your bouquets this year. Looking forward to spring blooms during this dreary time in zone 6 New England. Have a nice day.
I am missing spring so much! ;) When I was a kid I use to find horn caterpillars all the time. I learned so much stuff about my family farm after following you. I found my 82 year old grandmas roses are 67 years old. And the indoor plant is 62! That is so wild!
I had lousy germination with my annual phlox in soil blocks last year, so am presprouting in a damp paper towel this year. So far, great germination! I will be growing sugar stars and cherry caramel along with you :)
I had hummingbird moths in my 4 o'clock garden (over 5) and I loved them. We're excited to see what happens this year since it was just before the cold hit. Didn't bother me since those flowers grow like crazy.
Thank you so much for this video! I really love these perfect little snippets all about one plant; they help so much! I realized recently I've been confusing annual phlox with Dianthus/Sweet William. 🤦♀️. Now that I have a better source of info on phlox, I'll have to go hunting on one for Sweet William. Thanks again! I always look forward to your videos. They brighten my day! ❤️ 💐
Oh how much I needed a video about flowers ❤️ When things aren’t going well flowers make it better 🙏🏻Or at least give you strength and motivation to go on.
Thanks for the encouragement! With this info, I think I can be successful this year! I also got the dulce du leche from Floret and have leftover seeds of the Cherry Brandy from last year. PINCHING! I think that's the ticket! They grew so fast indoors last year and when I set them out they turned into a groundcover! They spread out and were all over the surface of the soil...not so good for cutting but oh the color!!! I definitely found them to be cool season since I threw them outside about a month before my last frost (I'm over in the Albany area) and they were fine. Really, I saw this thumbnail and my eyes opened wide! Thanks so much for sharing your keys to Phlox success! One day I will make it to your porch!
I grew cherry carnel phlox a few years ago & didn’t have great success because I couldn’t find enough info about how to grow annual phlox. So thank you!!!
Whenever I have a bad day at work, your videos makes me happy again. Your love for flowers is contagious in a good way. Thank you for making videos. 💖🌹Flower Fan
Now I have to add annual phlox to my seed order! Never tried it. It looks like a good one to winter sow. The hummingbird moths that fly during the day aren't hornworm adults...Their caterpillars actually eat a certain type of honeysuckle, snowberry or viburnum depending on which type it is (snowberry clearwing or hummingbird clearwing). I love it when I see them in my garden!
Thanks! I am constantly bombarded with negative hornworm comments every time I mention a hummingbird moth. I mentioned it basically as a response to all of the naysayers before they comment about them. Love my moths!
Thank you Nicole, I was just wanted to start some seeds today and wondered about their cool flower abilities.. I will wait a little longer. They are so cute, Phlox of Sheep is another favourite of mine, beautiful candy pastel shades.
How cool. I've been watching many of your older videos while I start a Boat Load of seeds. And here you are. I fell in love with Phlox a couple years ago when I bought a "marked down" beautiful little Pinky Purpley Perennial Phlox that looked to me like the cutest little orphan begging me to take her home. She now has a prominent place on my front island, where she has multiple babies of her own. I am adding Tall Phlox Mix in a back corner behind her And a White Creeping Phlox (Ground Cover) surrounding and connecting them all this Spring! I saw this video and said "Oh ya, talk Phlox to me Girl!" LOL 😄
I bought phlox this year and many other fillers and was debating on actually growing but now that I've seen your video I've got to try it! Thanks so much!
I like when you do these short specific flower videos! They’re really helpful and I love to see your bouquet photos too. I am protecting mine from rabbits this year. They love phlox and left me nothing. Do you remember how tall they were when they survived that really cold night?
Tomato Hornworm is in the same family as the Hummingbird Moth but Tomato Hornworms only fly at night and are a fairly dark-looking Hawk Moth. The Hummingbird Moths you see flying around in the day time use native Honeysuckles, (Lonicera sp. and Diervilla sp.)
Thanks! I am constantly bombarded with negative hornworm comments every time I mention a hummingbird moth. I mentioned it basically as a response to all of the naysayers before they comment about them. Love my moths! 💐
@@FlowerHillFarm You can actually buy Tomato Hornworm caterpillars from pet shops sometimes. (And I think on Amazon too). They're meant to be lizard food and are not toxic because they are never fed their host plants: Tomato, Potato, Tobacco, and Eggplant which all contain Nicotine in their leaves. They are also an amazing Electric blue color because the dry feed they are fed in captivity doesn't contain any green pigment which they would naturally get from these plants. What's really neat though is if you put them on one of their host plants they will turn green after only an hour or two of eating, this also makes them toxic for lizards to eat. Despite being a major pain for Tomato growers, it's "fine" for places to sell them because they're meant to be food and require soil medium to burrow through in order to pupate and complete their life cycle.
I had issues with germination last year. I will make sure not to use a heat mat and try putting it out before frost. This kind of information is really helpful.
I had a free pack of mixed colored Phlox from Baker Creek and sowed them Jan 26th, I had nice sprouts last week. I've had a perennial pale purple Phlox in my garden since 1998, it has spread nicely and attracts the hummingbird moth, which yes I love too.
Hi this is Jan and I wanted to tell you that I happened to notice while while I was watching you take your lilies and the stamens and how you can create a whole different way get a Chenille stem or some people call and pipe cleaners and just twirl it on the Petals of the flower that has the pollen on them before it gets rubbed in because once you rub that pollen in its permanent and it gets on your clothes and it's permanent but if you take a pipe cleaner and get it while it's still powdery on the on the it will come off and you have saved your lilies and that's a Hallelujah I love your RUclips channel keep up the good work I've been a retired florist my whole career has been working in the flower shop I had my own businesses and now I get to do it for fun
I grew sugarstar phlox last year and it was beautiful, but very leggy. Gonna try multiple rounds of pinching this year as you recommend - thanks for this video!!
I’m so loving cherry Carmel phlox I’m also growing dulce de leche can’t wait. I love the smell thanks for that info! I had some go late into December zone 6b.
great video on phlox! I'm trying my hand at growing them (Cherry Caramel) for the first time from seed, and so far so good--very good germination! Southern CA. Zone 9b
Last year I bought fresh sugar stars from Baker creek and had NO success with them either. I'm pretty sure it's a germination issue. Hopefully this years stock has improved, but I haven't repurchased. Thanks for the tips! I hope my cherry caramel phlox grows up strong!
I agree with you Nicole- although I don't like the hornworms on my tomatoes, I will gladly take dealing with a few here and there to have the Hummingbird Moth in my garden! They are beautiful!
Very helpful. Thanks so much. You r so great for sharing info. Do u have a video on annuals that can be planted before frost dates? I would love to watch, if available Thanks again.
I was just using your sample spreadsheet this past weekend and entering in all the information for my seed varieties(HUGE help btw) and when I got to phlox I kept thinking…hmmmm, Nicole started these pretty early last year?? I think I’ll try too, I am in zone 4b as well!
Good information....I love Phlox. I want to direct seed them in Zone 9b. I'm guessing after the first frost date? Are lows are in the 30's and sometimes 20's but not often.
I don’t know if I got really lucky but I direct sowed four different varieties of phlox in 30 gallon fabric pots back in December and in mid January. I did not cover any of them because for some reason I thought they needed light to germinate. Honestly I still believed that they did until this video because all of mine germinated and none of them were covered. LOL. Zone 10a/10b here
Hi Nicole. Your videos are very inspirational and to the point. I will appreciate your help to solve a problem with my rose. I bought a mini rose plant with two fully opened blooms . The other buds are about 20% open for 3 weeks and not opening at all. What can you suggest that I do. Many thanks for your help. I have it indoors.
I only had 50% germination on my floret whipped cream. Dulce de leche was 100%. I did 10 soil blocks of each because small yard is very small. Maybe I chose the wrong 10 for whipped cream since the rest of my phlox tray looks awesome. I just sowed another 5 of whipped cream last night. Hopefully those do better.
I had such problems germinating phlox last year. After I watched your video I tried again, and within just a few days my trays were full of sprouts!! I was getting them too warm. Thank you, and if it’s not too much trouble, would love to see how you sow statice sometime.😊
I've cut perennial phlox for bouquets before and had an issue with it shedding quickly. Am I just not cutting the stems early enough? Love you're enthusiasm!

Hummingbird moths are sooo dang cool ❤
I grew dulce de leche last season and loved it. Blooms in 60 days after starting from seed!
Cool! Yes, 60 days typically. But because I pinch it for longer stems, it delays bloom by a couple weeks.
I had issues with germination last year. I will make sure not to use a heat mat and try putting it out before frost. This kind of information is really helpful.
Good info, last year mine were so so…..this year after watching your video, I know what to do! Thanks

Thanks for sharing how to grow. How long do they last in the vase?
Hi Nicole I LOVE YOU. That’s all🥰
Hi Karly 😊💐
What the phlox?! Mind blown.
Beautiful Grow. #Goals
Thank you! Super helpful.
I've cut perennial phlox for bouquets before and had an issue with it shedding quickly. Am I just not cutting the stems early enough? Love you're enthusiasm!
Perennial Phlox should be cut when 50% of the blooms are open for longest vase life.
Just hoping for this season i can see your clip more than last year...
I love phlox so much! Unfortunately, mine always get devoured by deer and rabbits, so I have given up trying to grow them.
So so helpful!!
We have those Big Daddy Moths too!
I also think they're magical!!
TO WATCH.
Magical to WATCH.
NOT touch!!
Thank you!
I’m so excited to know this! Thanks!!!!
How many times did you have to pinch to get decent stem length?
At least 3 times, maybe more.
Oh I liked that picture, I like your hair longer 😊, king of Adele ish…don’t mind me just a mom!
My hair grows really fast. It was half dead and needed a chop. It will be that long again by summer!
Thank you so much Nicole your information is always so helpful. I think you will have to pull together a book sometime....as I know I will buy one that's for sure. Hey do you succession plant your phlox?
I did a second succession two weeks later.
Thanks Nicole!!!!
So helpful thanks!
You may get powdery mildew by August. Just a heads-up.
The annual phlox are not as susceptible as the perennial phlox. I saw some signs of powdery mildew in early September but not much and it was a VERY wet 2021!
Just getting started and so inspired by you! But, how in the world do you find an insurance company to cover this type of business 😖 I can pretty much only find people willing to cover farmer market vendor liability only!
Umbrella Policy!
When you pinched, were you pinching the central stem or the laterals?
Will you explain s l o w l y your pinching method. Mine did great after a 2-year fail after I soil-blocked, but they did grow pretty crazy and “branch-y”. It sounds like pinching them might be the final secret to success?
Have you found your bio 360 breaks down over the season, or do you have to do something with it? Phlox are gorgeous!
I put it in a compost heap. It wouldn’t break down in one season here in my climate but it will in the heap
@@FlowerHillFarm ok, I wondered. I think my mid-Missouri August would do the job. Thanks for the info!
I seen a hummingbird moth for the first time 2 seasons ago. I didnt know what it was until my husband said something to me. I do think they are magical. I didnt know that there was annual phlox. I have perennial ones. Can u pinch them back and make them bushy.
I can't get it to last in the vase. It falls apart :( Any tricks or tips on how to correctly harvest?
Do you harvest them fully open for cut flowers?
Thank you for such a great video!! Maybe I missed it (and I don't mind watching flower videos again 😉 ) but did you transplant straight out from your grow room? Or did you do any hardening off method for a few days before tucking those puppies in? I wish I had more space for all the flowers, let alone more phlox. Ugh, can I just move in with you?
Everything is always hardened off for a few days. I use my porch as a protected space.
I figured as much, but wanted to check with my #1 expert! I take it that's a "no" on moving in? 😁 Just kidding. Colorado is a long ways away.
Any way we can get a video of what all you succession plant?
Other than the Mantis and a tractor, you use a rototiller on your farm, Nicole?
Yes, we have the tiller attachment for the tractor and use it at the end and the beginning of the season to clear the beds and add in fresh compost.
I’m trying direct sowing of it this year! Do you need a lot of successions, or not really if you keep up with pinching and cutting them? I read that they tend to get floppy and weird growth habit at first but keep pinching and they’ll get taller!
I just did two successions
How many times did you pinch your patch???
Can you do a video like this on snapdragons?
I have no idea how to get long stems..and they scare me.
My Sugar Starts Phlox from Baker's Creek last year did not germinate at all either :(
Where do you get biodegradable film?
I like to sow mine with sweet peas
Where did you get those blue trays with seed blocks on?!?
They are disposable hospital trays the local hospital was throwing away.
There is a strange insect that eats modern phlox leaves, how can I treat it?
How would one succession plant with a small space?
Slow down…. Ha you’re super excited for sure😄
I only have one speed! The only one that allows me to get it all done 🤣🥰
If you're constantly pinching back phlox and it reblooms why is it never mentioned as a cut and come again flower?
🤷♀️ I’m mentioning it now! It bloomed from June til frost with new stems every week.
I want to be first!
NOT HAPPENING WALTER!!! LOL
