Oh oh oh oh oh!!! I can give you a helpful "seed saving tip" for gather now- sort it out later. Honestly my seeds are still waiting to be sorted out because of Christmas. I piled these up. Ready? Coffee filters! Take a stack in a bowl and grab a pen. On a non-windy day when you notice seeds need harvesting Write the name, type and color and fill up your filter. You can stack them up and (here is the beauty of it) they will dry in a stack because there is still enough airflow!!! Seed saving is one of my fav parts of growing!! I become obsessed! SEEEEDS!🤪
This is great advice! I have trouble picking stuff, putting it in a container, it gets mixed with similar looking plants (happens a lot with dried zinnias and basils for me), and then I can't remember what they are and can't identify them positively. I usually end up naming them mixes or put a ? next to what I think they are lol.
I had a very strange experience with stock seeds. So here's the story (zone 8,9): I started the Iron Pastel mix (from Johnny's seeds) and transplanted to the garden, they didn't bloom, the first year. They gave a nice bush, but no flower at all. And I thought, well, maybe I was late with the timing and thought they will die for the next year. Guess what, next season, they all came back with beautiful and fragnant flowers!!! Interesting thing was that it came out as branching and on one flower plant I could see both single and double flowering plant. I have absolutely no idea what happened, and how this is possible. So I just left them on the ground (but cut the flowers for bouqets), didn't pull out, and waiting for the next year for more surprises :))) Thank you very much for a great video! A lot of useful information for the flower growers
I grew Katz stock in the late summer this year in a afternoon shaded area. I live in zone 6a, this year was less humid but very warm here. They did better than the early spring planted. 24 - 30 " stems. I live in WNY by the way. Is your area really warm in late July? My last frost is Mid to early October range.
I was just coming here to say this! It looks like their larger packets are sold out right now but I don't know if they may come back in stock or if they'd make a deal on lots of small packets.
I saved my own stock seeds last fall and yup…they actually germinated and are teeny tiny green babies right now! It worked! It worked! They’re ALIVE!!! They’re ALIVE!!! I absolutely love stock. I would never want to be out of stock..of stock! This is so fun.😊 I intend to save some stock seeds every year till the end of time. Amen.

Hi Nicole, came across your blog this week and though I'm not a "planter" of seeds, I am enjoying your blog! You have balanced enthusiasm that is contagious. I love the appearance of stocks and now you have me considering growing some in the tiniest patch of garden surrounding my pool here in So. California (Zone 10). I subscribed already. Got excited when you found those stocks and harvested the seeds! Your "flower farm" and this new venture with the greenhouse/store makes me wish you were here in So. California. I caught the vision you were describing and your business will be such a beautiful addition to your community. If you were freeway close I know I'd plan on visiting your nursery. Your farm name reminds me of Beatrix Potter's: Hill Top Farm
That's so interesting about the smell being reduced once it's been in the cooler after harvest. I've bought stock from the grocery store before and it never smells as good as the ones I've grown myself. Good to know!
First year growing stock great, last year not so much...went from cold temps to heat wave. Not giving up though...growing Column Blend, a Vintage Mix and 2 from Floret (Apricot & Buttercream). Started lisianthus today then realized it's Friday the 13th..did I jinx myself...lol! PS: Love how you give us your experience growing certain flowers, it's very helpful.
Awesome video, thanks so much, I am growing stock for the first time this year and all my questions have now been answered. I bought a branching variety.
I'm planning to do stock for the first time in my home garden - we'll see what happens! It seems like you've nailed down a process that works for you, so I'm excited to see your harvest.
Omg! I'm so excited to see the outcome of the stock seed saving experiment. I recently discovered stock and how gorgeous it is. I was really jazzed to find out it's edible since I try to grow non toxic plants around my children. They have autism and suffer from pica so there's a chance they may eat something I grow especially if it's in the backyard. I'd love to see if they grow true to type because I will save the seeds of my favorites. Baker's Creek Whole Seed Catalog has a stock syrup recipe I really want to try.
I really hope you leave the root, and see if they come back from the plant!!!!! You could totally have stock right now!!!!!! OMG THIS IS EXCITING!!!!!!!
Hey Nicole, have you ever thought about adding veggies in your boquets? Last year i grew these mini eggplants. The fruits were purple and white striped. About 1"-2" long. The stems were super long filled with these amazing bright colored fruits that lasted forever in an arrangement. My local floral shop adored them. Check into it. It also produces early. Produces before cherry tomatoes.

Last year I grew stocks from seed but I was not happy with the fact it was not branching. I wanted the branching after I saw your video. I found it at Urban Farmer in the US, and I ordered a bunch of colours from them. I am in Canada.
Good Saturday morning Nicole - and Happy New Year. The garden is looking absolutely lovely and the design on those seed packets is fantastic. Thanks for all you do throughout the year sharing your great gardening tips!
Hi Nicole- I have access to an unheated greenhouse with crushed stone on the floor. I'd like to use it to grow stock, snaps and sweet peas. How deep do the roots get on stock? I will need to grow in some kind of raised bed or container.
Exciting that you found some stock seeds. Anxious to see if they germinate. Hope the do. Perhaps there are some in the soil that will come up as well. 😊💖🦋🕊🌸
THANK YOU!! I love stock the smell, the look, everything but was about to give up on it. I will try again under a low tunnel set up this year since I don't have a hoop house- fingers crossed
I love stock so much but have never had luck growin it! I'm in zone 6a and the plants grow but never flower. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I try again every year. I only have a 5x10' raised bed, but I save room for stock every year. Fingers crossed this is my year!!
They are a really cool loving flower. They can be tricky. It's all about timing, and if they get over 60° they literally won't flower. Start them now If you haven't already. They need the length of the day as she said, but they don't like the hot. What she's explaining in the end makes sense bc she started them earlier and kept them cool. It's kinda confusing 😕
Thanks for the reminder to look for the Rainbow Quartet variety! (How did I forget about that?!) I hope your seeds germinate for you, please update us if they do.
I made several searches on whether or not stocks are open polinators and if they cross polinate and could not find anything directly answering the question. I did fine that some varieties are biennials and other perenniels depending on your climate and some behave like anuuals because its just too cold out there ...
Territorial Seed has the Rainbow variety and they sell bulk quantities. I just picked up a small packet. I’m with you and I loved my one stock plant I grew last year so I just purchased a bunch of varieties from rareseeds earlier this week.
Super helpful video on your experience and how you plan to start, bump up and plant out this year. Will have to revisit this one as I get closer to starting stock this year.
I picked up that book and a few others after you mentioned them in another video about up-potting the Lizzie’s and having larger starts when you transplant. Great video!
Thank you for this awesome video🙂stock is one of my favourite flowers 🥰I grew them for the first time last year and I’m praying 🙏 I can this year. I swear I’m addicted to their scent 😂I can’t get enough! I was like a cat with catnip last year🥴😵💫😻😂😂
So I did a bit of research a few years ago to find out exactly what could cross pollinate. End of story, if it is not releasing pollen at the same time, they can't possibly cross. So the theory is that you just try to time the specific seeds you want to save a little differently than the others.
Nichole tyvm. I am just a home gardener dabbling with cut flowers and all your sharing is so much appreciated. Not to mention love watching the greenhouse & all you're doing 2nd channel. I know you never expect donations but please add how we can donate cash to your efforts into the header if YT will allow you.
Thank you so much for elaborating on why you grew it in the hoop house! I wanted to love my stock so bad last year but it was so freaking short. But it makes sense that you've got to almost force elotation. I have the Katz formula mix and I ended up getting multiple branches from it but it's because I never picked it because it was so short. I'm going to try to get the quartet type and see how it goes! Thank you so much!!
That's very interesting. Has anyone tried growing stock where it gets afternoon shade? I'm thinking I may need to experiment this year and I have plenty of shade!
I'm waiting for my stock seeds to arrive! It will be my first time growing them. Excited! Thanks for sharing your wisdom! I'm enjoying learning from you all the way over here in Northwestern WA State!
This is my first year trying to grow Stock. I had poor germination with soil blocking for the first time. I love all the information. Update 7/1/24 My stock has been really slow to grow. It appears I do need to stake these as I have a few that are falling over. However, next year I will try some in my new greenhouse in the spring.
Thanks Nicole. I have had also too short stocks and havent grown them for years. Also pests are an issue outdoors. Maybe I try them again in my high tunnel. This time earlier like you do to gather the length and insect pressure will be lower.
Territorial is a good option for the stock you are looking for, because, you can buy them in bulk - like 5000 seeds - if that is what you need. Not sure what is happening with Johnnys right now
I gotta say, I saved stock seeds this year... And I noticed that only the single flowers made seeds. The pods formed from double flowers never swelled. They were empty. It made me wonder if I will get any double flowers from that seed. I don't know how stock genetics works.
I grew stock for the first time last year and was so bummed it only gave one flower stalk. I didn't know it was a one and done. I also bought some of those purple ones from Baker Creek, they are absolutely stunning. I don't have a hopp house so here's hoping I get some blooms

Crying for you! This is great!!! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us Nicole. ❤️ I pray and hope you have a blessed year!
I ordered my quartet stock from Urban Farmer. Still in stock as of today
Amazing video!!! Having others with different flowers will be so cool!!
Thanks for the insights on growing stock. Now I know why I did not succeed with them.
holy guacamole! the stock from my seed packets looks like the mildew seeds! never knew they were yellow. some were black which isn't mildew
I picked up that book and a few others after you mentioned them in another video about up-potting the Lizzie’s and having larger starts when you transplant. Great video!
Check Territorial Seed Company. They sell them up to 250 packs. But they call them QUARTET RAINBOW (sorry for caps--copy/pasting).
Thanks Sam! I think I found them on their site after I recorded this! I'm going to see if my collected seeds do well :)
@@FlowerHillFarm you just inspired me to order Quartet--I didn't know they were branching...I thought all stock was one and done! Very cool!
I believe it needs stratification. Just hopped on so, unsure if Nicole goes over this.
Ugh, you're really making me want to try some stock. I had a huge fail with the sweet peas I tried last year so I'm not optimistic. Ohio zone 6a
Thanks Nicole.
Interesting!
Territorial seed has rainbow quartet seed in stock.
I grew stock for the first time last year and was so bummed it only gave one flower stalk. I didn't know it was a one and done. I also bought some of those purple ones from Baker Creek, they are absolutely stunning. I don't have a hopp house so here's hoping I get some blooms
You can always build a low tunnel. I guess that might help.
Wild garden seed has rainbow quartet seed!!!
