I'm a bit iffy. The 1 hour was somewhat of a problem already in this ep, though I understand why they didn't do more. Largely this was more like a "react" or "first impressions". This really works better with something shorter (Goodby Eri) or one where the beginning has wild content (Fear and Hunger). I think being forced to consume content colors people's perception as well. I mostly liked this episode, but maybe slightly more niche, shorter stuff? Liked this better than their 5x5 eps.
@shadowreacts5618 Nice bait, it was like the 100th show I watched and still one of my top 10. Saying something is mid and your reasoning being YOU couldnt get invested without saying anything else is laughable
@shadowreacts5618don’t know what more you can want from a show, good ost, plot twists, world building, likeable characters, good villain, a satisfying ending, interesting power system, and good animation. What more can you want ?
They should've told Joey to watch the first 3 episodes of Arcane, because for anyone who hasn't seen it, episodes 1 & 2 are mainly "Here's this world, characters, and gorgeous animation" but episode 3 is the real "HOLY SHIT!" moment that hooks ANYONE who watches the show. And after that happens, the story really gets darker, with both the dialogue and animation getting better and better.
Imo saying you gave arcane a shot by watching 1 episode is equivalent to saying you watched 1/3rd of breaking bads 1st episode Am I right or am I right
I stopped after the third episode, felt the story was predictable and saw no reason to continue. What was the holy shit moment? That they went separate ways?
@@martin162asd Did you suffered brain damage or something? (Legit worry) What the fuck are you talking about? @bigevilshark1958 from what I've heard, they haven't improved at all since, either. Better help just offers a shit ton of sponsor money. I hate seeing my favorite creators advertise them.
Important context for Arcane is that it was released three episodes at a time so season one is essentially divided into three parts, episodes 1-3, 4-6 and 7-9.
Sad part is they've been in the game long enough, they 1000% are aware of what the company is really about, I mean I swear I remember Joey talking about it back in the day the 1st time they got exposed Sigh, and i ain't saying this as some furious parasocial stan that's feels betrayed I'm still going to watch, I'm simply disappointed
It is pretty disappointing because therapy is such a vulnerable thing. I do believe that content creators have a moral responsibility to check the products/services they promote especially when it pertains to a vulnerable group of people and when most people on the internet are aware that the service is shitty. If not, that’s their choice but then people have every right to call them out on it.
I think they might be locked in a contract its not that they want to keep the Sponsership but because they are contractly obligated to do so nobody wants to hurt their own image on such a scale, so i guess they have to wait until the contract is finished.

I can't believe he only spent like 5 minutes on it and another 5 explaining visuals. Just, wow. It really sucks to think he may never finish the series just because one episode had a lot of things to do and did insanely well at containing a lot of moving pieces and introducing a lot of concepts. Just not enough to hook like BB managed to.
Exactly correct. It had just finished airing a few years before. If you were interested in Brotherhood, you probably *had* just watched the original somewhat recently. So in the first season, they add an anime original first episode which is like a 20-min long movie, and mostly just contains stuff that won't make sense until like 30 episodes down the line. Then they rush through the material from the manga that the original show covered, playing up the humor, and the pacing is pretty uneven as a result. It really hits its stride in the 2nd season, and doesn't ever let up.
I am actually in the camp that still thinks that FMA 2003 is a better story than Brotherhood. The key scenes with better build up of Al and Ed's failed resurrection/transmutation of their mum, Hughes' death, Nina's chimera incident, Envy's battle with Ed, Father's impact to the story all has more emotional weight to me than Brotherhood. Also, I prefer the darker ending that connects to Conquerer of Shambala and it would have been more talked about as an opening ending compared to Brotherhood's meek and flowery ending.
I watched FMA first as well and was happy I did when I started watching Brotherhood. I couldn't imagine myself getting into the story otherwise. It was so sped up that it didn't make a lot of sense.
Should probably drop Better Help as a sponsor. The company sells patients information and the therapists they hire don’t go through a thorough background check.

The Domestic Girlfriend segment had my crying out laughing cuz I also like it as much as Garnt and I was also getting flashbacks of the events happening
Referring to Garnt watching FMAB: when he said, it kind of felt like they expected him to already know some characters, I think this is something that doesn’t get talked about enough when FMAB came out. It did feel like they already assumed you watched the original Anime bc stuff happens so fast. I think it’s still the better series BUT It’s only as good as it is if you watched FMA first, if that makes since. The pride story line is one I remember having way more set up and depth in FMA then FMAB but because most of us already seen FMA it still was amazing. I could be tripping but that’s my thoughts.
Came here to comment the same. I think the original series has a much better start. FMAB basically just speedruns the story until it catches up to the point where both series branch off. Frustrating the boys don't mention it. I had my wife watch FMA up to ep28 and then we switched over to Brotherhood. Needless to say it hooked her and she loved it. When I showed her what FMAB to start the series, she really disliked it. I wish Garnt would've started with the original series.
You not tripping at all , watching the original then brotherhood is always the right way to go , Liore gets better introduction than the way brotherhood set it up and the nina set up as well. Hell even the Barry the chopper was more of a threat in the original. That shit was emotional seeing Ed was about to take a life but slashed Al accidentally in fear. Brotherhood may be better than the original but it’s definitely lighter in tone than the original
honestly this is probably why i have so many issues with people who praise FMAB as being infinitely better than the original bc i genuinely didnt think they did the beginning as well as they did in og FMA.

Listen to Everywhere at the End of Time. It's an album about the stages of dementia. It starts off like classical 1920s ballroom music, and slowly as you go further into the album, you're hearing multiple songs that simultaniously sound like everything and nothing at all. Like there's no melody. Everything is tangled and distorted. Absolute horror for several minutes at a time, until for just a split second, you hear a melody that played around the start of the album. You hear it long enough to recognize that it's familiar, but not long enough to reach out and understand it. You're only left with the feeling that it's familiar, but not knowing what it actually is. It's an empty, horrifying feeling. Many people that listen to it all in one sitting actually come out crying. It's an experience that is unforgettable. Honestly, it is in my opinion, the only album that can truely be considered "art". It's my favourite album and I revisit it frequently, but I don't advise you listen to it if you struggle with mental health, however, and yes, I'm deadly serious about that.

Joey about Arcane: "I would like to think it gets better after episode 1." YES IT DOES AAAARG IT'S SO FRUSTRATING, episode 1 is the definition of "pretty but mid" because it feels like it's checking off boxes for cutesy coming-of-age stories, and while ep 2 is a bit spicier, it isn't until episode 3 that it says "haha okay joke's over, here's what the show is REALLY about" and demolishes your expectations like an abandoned dockside warehouse full of orphans EDIT: I'd go so far as to say that watching Arcane up to ep 3 is _even more important_ than watching FMAB up to ep 4... though FMAB ep 1 is worse than Arcane ep 1
I agree completely but I also feel like it's reasonable to expect that 1 episode should do a good job encapsulating what you're going to get. Certainly Arcane doesn't really hit it's stride till the latter half of episode 2 into 3 and the they don't quite nail the art style until 3 with the first two feeling more like Pixar and the 3 on feeling like it's own sort of moving oil painting thing that the first 2 don't quite get to. It was clearly an evolving project. That said its totally valid do think that a show isn't worth your time if it can't hook you right from episode 1, I must say I've never quite understood the whole 3 episode rule or whatever.
@@MNewtonI disagree like a lot of shows need to spend a bunch of time to establish the norm so future impacts matter more so I think three episodes is better to give you a picture of what the show is going for.

1:55:57 Kinda. Brotherhood was clearly made with the expectation that the person watching had seen the original adaptation since it doesn't go as in-depth as they could have. This is why I always recommend watching the first adaptation first.
Exactly. I'm always surprised that people recomment skipping the original and going straight for Brotherhood. Without watching the original first, I'm fairly certain I would drop the Brotherhood before getting to all the good parts, because the beginning was so chaotic and not a good introduction of the characters and the story
I never watched the "original" and went straight to Brotherhood. I never have any problem following it at all. After that I went ahead and read the whole manga and I don't really remember it missing anything
To defend FMAB, it’s “supposed” to feel like you know everyone as it aired not too long after FMA and after the manga ends. I don’t think they planned/expected for the show to last this long after the anime aired.
Manga still went on as it aired, and finished two weeks before the anime did. The promise was that the anime would adapt the entire manga, no filler, especially because the manga was already in its final stages of the story.
@@polkadi Good lord, imagine if a delay happened from the anime or manga. A two-weeks apart ongoing source material & adaptation gives me anxiety thinking about it.
@@allendalenapo3430 I mean, the manga was a monthly series, so the anime had to catch up to years of material first. And personally speaking, if they adapted the start of the series properly instead of piggybacking off the original TV adaptation, they would have had more leniency. At least there was only one filler episode (the first episode, sort of) and a story recap, and that's it. According to Studio Bones, Hiromu Arakawa kept them in touch with where the story was going so they could finish the series properly, but yeah, they were ALWAYS going to cut it close. For an anime adaptation, that's insane. You'll likely never hear of a case like this again, for good reason.
@@allendalenapo3430there basically was. The idea of Arcane was to lure you into false expectations for the show being a generic "good vs evil" stereotypical story and then in episode 3 and onwards, subvert those expectations with a much more emotional and ethically-challenging storyline. Joey has to watch to ATLEAST episode 3 to really get the idea of the show.
@@Cae17617 No, no you can't. Sometimes, but not always. The show is like 9 episodes long and you can't be bothered to watch up until the part where everyone says it gets much better. It started off strong, and slowly built to episode 3 and 4.
The thing about Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is that it’s not meant to be an intro into FMA. That’s why the first episode is a bad first episode because the people making Brotherhood expected its viewers to have already read the manga or watched 2003 anime adaptation. That’s why the beginning is so rushed and also why the first chapter doesn’t actually get adapted until episode 3.
Honestly I'd recommend the first 25 episodes of FMA 2003 even above the manga. The beginning being so solid in the original anime is the reason why it became so legendary among Western fans of anime. And although the rest of the story has some hiccups, I believe watching all of it does add to your enjoyment of Brotherhood. The 2003 version sets expectations for the outcome of the story, and the way Brotherhood breaks them functions as a powerful plot twist in its own right, similarly to how some well-written VNs like Fate/Stay Night use the route system to subvert expectations. Especially that one scene right after the diverging point is made much more epic by this mechanism---because of my experience with 2003, that scene completely blew my mind, and to this day it remains one of the most memorable scenes I've seen in any anime.
The Balrog design is so sick. It's covered in shadow and fire, the sounds it makes are not the roar of an animal - It's literally the sound of fire coming from its maw.

As a otome visual novel girlie, that’s sinking 30 hours at least to play all the different routes and getting the different endings. 4 and 7 hours sounds like a breeze to me LMAO
So true. Saya no Uta was perfect for being a VN no more than 5 hours but when the boys were saying all VNs would be better if they were short was a L take. I like VNs that take awhile to finish especially when you are trying to 100% it by going through all the routes and getting all the endings
I mean, Arcane isn't really hooking you in from episode one, it's when the first batch (the three first episodes) that Arcane hooks people in. It's also how it was intended, when they released three episodes each batch
I never related to anyone in the pod more than Garnt was during the DomeKano segment. Seeing their reactions was SO FUN. But Garnt wasn't capping, the writing really gets so good near the midpoint to almost end
Them talking Saya no Uta really made me realise that they should ... They really should be playing The house in Fata Morgana. That's the peak... I think they should do an episode where they watch audience pick stuff and we could pick The House in Fata Morgana. I don't think Visual novels can get any better than that. It has no Visual novel issues. No fluff, very intriguing stories ( yes stories) and music better than 99.9% of media out there Edit: WTF they are actually gonna do it. Fata morgana fans... rise up. 2:01:14 plenty of people do this in real life. many of my friends didn't have childhoods for this exact reason or reasons similar. kids lock in all the time when they're forced to provide for or even raise their siblings
I think Garnt would get more enjoyment out of watching both FMA 2003 + Brotherhood, instead of only Brotherhood in isolation. Not just because the beginning (the first ~25 eps) is much more solid in the former, but because the foundation created by 2003 makes Brotherhood feel more epic, via contrast. To avoid spoiling anything, particularly the first major diverging point in Brotherhood is made several times more awe-inspiring when you (only) know the 2003 side of the story. The two series feel very much like well-written VN routes in how they play out. FMA 2003 spends enormous effort to get the viewer invested in the beginning, while Brotherhood skims through it, as if expecting the viewer to already know how it plays out. FMA 2003 sets grim expectations for the outcome of the story, paving the way for Brotherhood to break through them. The juxtaposition makes their relative strengths shine. You can very well enjoy them in isolation, but I think there's much more to be gained from watching them as a set.

Just not enough to hook like BB managed to.
Unfortunately for the Fullmetal affect garnts describing , they assume everyone who’s watching brotherhood had watched the original 2003 series.

It did feel like they already assumed you watched the original Anime bc stuff happens so fast.
You are tripping i watch brotherhood first and didnt think that
No one talks about this but Father is one of the worst antagonists I have seen

Joey about Arcane: "I would like to think it gets better after episode 1."
YES IT DOES AAAARG IT'S SO FRUSTRATING, episode 1 is the definition of "pretty but mid" because it feels like it's checking off boxes for cutesy coming-of-age stories, and while ep 2 is a bit spicier, it isn't until episode 3 that it says "haha okay joke's over, here's what the show is REALLY about" and demolishes your expectations like an abandoned dockside warehouse full of orphans
EDIT: I'd go so far as to say that watching Arcane up to ep 3 is _even more important_ than watching FMAB up to ep 4... though FMAB ep 1 is worse than Arcane ep 1
episode two goes NUTS!!!
Arcane episodes are an hour long. So probably why. Grant spent 1 hour 2 watching 4 episodes of fma. That is if he didn't watch it at 2x speed 😂

Exactly. I'm always surprised that people recomment skipping the original and going straight for Brotherhood. Without watching the original first, I'm fairly certain I would drop the Brotherhood before getting to all the good parts, because the beginning was so chaotic and not a good introduction of the characters and the story

@@fatlace138 Why is it a slog? Even Joey said good enough things about it, just that he wanted more context, which more episodes would give him.
Thats like Fate, you have to watch a bad show to be able to understand the good stuff that will follow
@@eltongoaustriaco8268 Fate is entirely different. You have to play the VN to ever get any level of quality content.

It's covered in shadow and fire, the sounds it makes are not the roar of an animal - It's literally the sound of fire coming from its maw.
bro not betterhelp again 💀😭
You might want to look at Cinema Therapy's community note regarding betterhelp. They take what they take on as a sponsor very serious and created a several pages long reddit thread detailing what the issues with service were, why they stopped advertising them but revisited their decision after all issues were addressed by betterhelp in an actionable manner.
Made me stop watching the episode. 😢
Sorry I am unaware, lore dump please? Why is betterhelp spons bad? Are they a scam or something?
@@ytann Betterhelp was investigated by the FDA last year. The common story was that unprofessional or even unlicensed people were conducting therapy. As well as selling patient's data.
But according to Cinema Theraoy, a channel with usually great integrity and care, betterhelp did have issues that they took care of in 2024. Because as people on the internet do, they hear a headline and parrot whatever they hear.
So, people here might still remember the issues from 2023.
But they might want to check the community post of Cinema Therapy where they go into multiple pages deep explanation why they still think betterhelp is a meritous system.
So if you want to know what's going on head to there or their subreddit and you find an explanation with dozens of receipts.
@@ytannThey are a service that is basically a scam. They got busted a few years back and everyone disavowed them, but they are weaseling their way back into social media pretending to have changed when they have not at all.
1. They have violated HIPPA by selling customer medical information to data brokers.
2. You don’t have to be a licensed therapist to work for them and provide therapy to their customers.
3. They themselves say in the fine print that they are not a replacement for in-person therapy and shouldn’t be treated as such, running directly counter to the whole point of their brand as a online substitute for in-person therapy. They basically admit that their product is a pointless money pit for those deceived.
The reason why it started like that for FMA Brotherhood is because it assume you watch the previous FMA.
FYI : France is really good in 2d/3d animation, fortiche studio is the name of the studio making arcane
Samwise is such a bro that he swims after Frodo knowing he can’t swim
Loved the premise of this video! It really need a sequel/be a recurring thing on the channel!
01:55:27 Garnt watched FMA
THIS IS NOT A DRILL
As a otome visual novel girlie, that’s sinking 30 hours at least to play all the different routes and getting the different endings. 4 and 7 hours sounds like a breeze to me LMAO
So true. Saya no Uta was perfect for being a VN no more than 5 hours but when the boys were saying all VNs would be better if they were short was a L take. I like VNs that take awhile to finish especially when you are trying to 100% it by going through all the routes and getting all the endings
I myself am a visual novel enjoyer, I like both the long ones and short ones
Three hour episode is what I needed. Pool party was rained out, and I’m already prepped.
I mean, Arcane isn't really hooking you in from episode one, it's when the first batch (the three first episodes) that Arcane hooks people in. It's also how it was intended, when they released three episodes each batch
"First of all, swearing"
- Australian man
The real Full Metal Alchemists were the friends we made along the way
Watching the boys react to Domestic Girlfriend was definitely the highlight of this episode. 😂 They don't break at the gore, but the cliche does it.
3 hours podcast, boys are pleasing us at that point!
I never related to anyone in the pod more than Garnt was during the DomeKano segment. Seeing their reactions was SO FUN. But Garnt wasn't capping, the writing really gets so good near the midpoint to almost end
Why does this episode feel like a special 😂
Them talking Saya no Uta really made me realise that they should ... They really should be playing The house in Fata Morgana. That's the peak...
I think they should do an episode where they watch audience pick stuff and we could pick The House in Fata Morgana. I don't think Visual novels can get any better than that.
It has no Visual novel issues. No fluff, very intriguing stories ( yes stories) and music better than 99.9% of media out there
Edit: WTF they are actually gonna do it. Fata morgana fans... rise up. Patreons, support us. We making them play the first chapter at the very least
Where did they say they will read it? Excited for this 🎉
Now I gotta check that out since I really enjoyed Saya no Uta
Hope to see Guests soon, would love another NileRed episode and Chris is always goated - especially with his recent trips
Chris will be on soon (Connor teased it during his Monkey Jam stream)
Yeah, I recommend machete style watching FMA up to the conclusion of the Maes Hugh arc and then switching over to Brotherhood
Could not have said it better.
Connor telling Joey that Vander in Arcane isn't a playable character for LoL is.... funny
Blood runs... they all run.
He's right though. You'd have to be living in the jungle if you think Vander is actually playable in League
@@johnny733unless you don't know anything about league, eg. joey
@@johnny733 Well not vander himself as he was in season 1. But thats what ive heard from speculations so who knows
@@ConHtm its pretty much confirmed...
Banger idea, could have been used for a series of episodes tho
One of my proudest moments in recent memory is getting my brothers friend to read domestic girlfriend and in true manga fashion he finished 70 chapters in a manner of days
The transition to the Betterhelp ad after Fear and Hunger is comedy gold
Great episode! Historical milestone in TT history for bois to watch/play/read so many great hits.
Joey watching Arcane is the biggest character development of the year.
hopefully he watches more. aint no way 1 episode is enough
@@the_shadow_clasher the problem is when arcane premiered the first 3 episodes came out at the same time. We get a full grasp of what is to come after watching all 3 episodes hence why joey wasn't hooked after one.
Nah, Garnt's FMA tops that. He's been on that journey for over a decade.
"We forced each other to watch..."
Please tell me they made Joey watch Arcane
Only the first episode
One of the longest episodes to date but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait for the next one!
This episode was fire. We need more of this kind of stuff~
connor playing and talking about saya no uta in 2024 was not in my bingo card
Having the boys discuss LotR made my day.
43:42 Bro what faces was the Trash Taste Garnt making bruh this guy is a reaction goldmine.
Saya no Uta is a masterpiece ngl.
I was in the perfect age when LOTR released, I started to be interested in films and I also read the books, so my hype level was already at 100 when I first heard about the The Fellowship.
And I was still young enough to be deeply amazed and influenced by a movie - a feeling that is harder to replicate as I grow older.
So long story short, It was one of the best times in cinema I had in my entire life. The sound blaring as the trolls smashed the door in Moria, the shrieking of the Nazgul, the music.
I will never forget that.
Someone probably should’ve told Joey Arcane released in threes so it’s no surprise he thought the first episode was alright. It’s 1/3 of Act 1😅
Betterhelp being the sponsor after the fear and hunger review is peak comedy to me
So true
