- It's only been a few days since Linkin Park announced their reunion with new vocalist Emily Armstrong, but with it came LOTS of controversy.
Lots of information came out at once, but it's important to remember some things before attacking anyone. The aim of #makechesterproud is to be kind, respectful, and open to talking about things maturely. So let's have a kind, respectful, open conversation about it...

Regarding Emily's past, the one thing I'll say is that I trust Mike Shinoda. I trust Joe, Brad, Dave. I trust Talinda, Chester's widow. And they all approved of Emily. Emily apologized for her mistake regarding Danny, and as for the Scientology tie-in, as you said, people change. But sadly, Scientology is not something you quit in a bombastic way if you don't want trouble. Juding by the fact that Emily is openly gay, supports LGBTQ+ rights and has now joined a band that constantly talks about mental illness, she is now VERY CLEARLY not sharing the views of Scientology. And take it as you want, but the lyrics of The Emptiness Machine are blatantly about quitting a cult or organized religion. There's no other meaning that makes as much sense. So to me, all of this is as close to a statement we'll ever get. And that's fine.
Finally someone who gets it! People can’t just openly leave scientology, they will literally unalive you or family or make your life hell. People don’t seem to understand that and just jump on bandwagons of people’s opinions on the internet.
You hit the nail. People that says she disgrace Chester with her past have no idea how to forgive people and let them grow into a better human. They just want to hate because they were only Chester fans and not real fans of Linking Park.
This is exactly our thoughts too. I know we said in the video that nobody should speak to what Chester would have wanted, but I think we can all agree that he wouldn't want all this division - Gibby

She never made an apology, it wasn’t several years ago, and she wasn’t just there to support Danny Masterson, convicted felon, but cornered victims. And bullied them for “doing this to him “her belief system does not allow for her to believe in victimization! Not even for children. She was in the cadet organization as a young teen, and grew up without her parents on a ranch with other slave, labor children. If you watch her performances again, she is clearly not emotionally invested in the songs… Chester was, as he was connected to the songs, the lyrics, you could see it in his face, his body… Every performance that he made! She is just screaming, as part of the performance! There’s no emotional connection there. Don’t get me wrong, she is a victim as well, and I hope that she is able to leave the cult as soon as possible.
Tonights show at the Forum is going to be illuminating, while anti-Scientology protesters attempt to educate the fans. As an active Scientologist, in good standing, her job is to bring as many people into the cult as possible. They are going to use her celebrity, as they do Tom Cruise. I wish you would educate yourself on the belief system that she lives her life under. You would understand why this is so disrespectful to Chester!
I’m still in a state of shock, and will remember the moment that I heard the announcement! I just hope that Mike and the other members of the band haven’t already been drawn into the celebrity center, and have begun any of the courses!
You shouldn’t trust ANY of them. The whole thing has been infiltrated by Scientology, they’re even trying to recruit fans in to Scientology. This is bad.

This is really odd. I've never seen such an interest in someone's life outside of music or a band. I mean how did they even dig this up? Who started all of this and why? I mean she supported someone then found out later she shouldn't have. It's not a major crime or anything. Other rock stars have done far worse things yet no one ever questioned anything or made a big deal about it. why now over something like this? Is almost like it's planned controversy or something. it's weird.
I think it's because Of the abuse Chester experienced and her supporting a rapist , I think that what didn't sit well with certain fans and family .

If she was born into Scientology she has prob been brainwashed from birth so if she's even half-sane that would be a huge win. You can't really blame her for her background. Tbf, literally no one in the world can fit the shoes that Chester left so she was facing an impossible challenge from the beginning. I don't give a flying fuck what she did in the past, because what matters is the here and now, people can change an be forgiven. What matters is that the comeback of LP will be a success to true LP fans because their music is the important part and everything I heard so far tells me: They are back big time!
And the best part of all this is a smiling and happy Mike. I'm pretty sure Chester would have wanted to see him happy and contuniue what they started also without him!

Very VERY well said. Glad I subbed to this channel with your reaction, there is a lot more going on behind the scenes, including Mike even talking about how when her voice cracked, it was because she was crying, and not from vocal issues. She was clearly emotional and it got to her the magnitude of the situation she was stepping into.
The lyrics of the first song released were a direct call out to the hate and criticism they knew they would get, and with Emily and Colin working with the band since 2019ish and being in studio for the last 8 months, they knew of her past and the issues they would face. What dumbfounds me is the people jumping on everything to hate her think that Mike, Phoenix and Brad are dumb enough to NOT do background on a new lead after they waited 7 years to move on.
Everything these trying to hate and push division are stating is exactly against what Chester stood for his entire time with LP. Thanks for being a voice of reason trying to get through vs those that are trying to spread nothing but vitriol as they either cannot deal with change, or must cause division in ever news worthy event. (Bringing up the FACT the Emily has come out as gay publicly is a HUGE one.. as Scientology would NEVER allow for that.)

dread it, run from it, destiny arrives all the same. Mike knew this was a lose-lose situation, it is in the lyrics. But also the the dichotomy of the old LP and their new direction. The internet being the internet will have people divided on whether Emily was a good choice or not regardless. In fact, it would not matter who they chose, the result would be the same which is why I started my comment as I did. But Mike, besides making this clear in the lyrics of this single, made a wise choice to choose a female lead. Let's not forget that when it comes to bands, this is nothing knew, sometimes the lead singer simply moves on. Sure, it is a band but also a business. Sure we fans do grief Chester, of course we do, but what is grief, if not love persevering? Sometimes in knowing what we have lost we know what we have left... for LP a new direction, not a reboot nor replacement but doing the best you can and sometimes doing the best is all we can do. We all have a past, we make mistakes, we pay the price. In terms of her involvement in matters mentioned can be said all the same with many. Key here is past, not current. If am criticized for a mistake that person can be darn sure I will say "before you point a finger make sure your life is perfect, faultless or I will get the biggest spotlight I can to shine a light on your mistakes to such an extent that hypocrite becomes synonymous with your name"... alas and my apologies, since it is in memory of Chester. Something is not beautiful because it lasts... of course myself included we grief Chester... shedding tears is hard for me, but this song, had me crying like there was no tomorrow... Emily might not be Chester but reminds me of him I do not know why though, my this is just me, maybe it is not... but what is grief, if not love persevering? People who don't know much about how religious cults work should read a bit of homework. It's not a walk in the park to leave religious cults, Scientology included. I've never been involved with any cults. Emily is an imperfect human being, just like those who criticise her.
Finally a decent take on this. I agree with this 100%. We live in a world where people say “Be Kind”, “Not judging labelling people” etc etc. yet people who say that do the opposite.
I think Emily killed it, which artist doesn’t make mistakes live? How many bands have lost members have passed and they carried on? Times moves on, bands need to also. It doesn’t mean they need to forgot them.

Great common sense analogy for us. Just like LP band members did for their selection of Emily. Which was, What is best for THEM with their music style now and for the future. I am like you said a true LP fan. I just want them back doing what they love, to play music. Seven years was a long time. Mike said it best like you mentioned, Chester was unique and was Chester, and Emily is unique and will do Emily. If their 1st track Emptiness Machine is what we are going to get for the next 10-15 years, I'm all in. It is a great song because it has their style. Thank goodness for all of us they still love to play music, and just do what they do. Side comment, can you wrap your head around how Emily felt, oh my accepting the invitation to sing for one of the best groups in the world? She did a pretty darn good performance 1st time out!

I've been doing my own digging trying to get the actual human story behind the name and... god damn. For one, I knew scientology was a cult but holy eff... this is intense, dangerous and scary as hell... publicly denouncing it could mean a lot more than losing family connections. And it turns out at least one of those family members, her mom, is someone she'd never want to lose... her mom, despite her position way up there in the church, fought for her right to be gay. She also wound up in "the hole"... this story is inevitably riddled with pervasive traumas. She grew up loving this band while still enduring the conditions that obliterated her life. It's not the same story as Chester's... but the songs were always meant to speak to everyone. Did she make mistakes? Yeah... she admitted the mistake of attending that pre-hearing and let us in on how it happened... her naivety I suppose. The worst I've seen are a few claims that she herself was intimidating the victims at some point. I haven't been able to find support for those claims but they could definitely be true. That's a bigger mistake... but... it's not this unthinkable, unforgivable type of thing... I think her stance today on everything is pretty blatant.People can change and if the masses can't allow someone to move on from a few mistakes from several years ago that would certainly never have happened had that person not themselves been victimized... that's bleak. That's horrible. This is a real human story that, when taken in... seeing her belt out the lyrics to these songs... it just feels right.

I’m tryin to stay open-minded about Emily’s backstory and why Rob might not have wanted to be involved, but for me it comes down to a much simpler issue: I really don’t like her voice. It seems most fans do, and I’m genuinely happy for them and for the band . . . but she hurts my ears. 😖 I have severe sensory issues, so it’s common for me to not like certain sounds or even feel pain from them. I’m a bit disappointed, but that’s just the way it is.

I want to like her but her live performance sounded like the songs were in the wrong key for her. I can't even knock her cause I think she might have sang them better if they were in a higher key. Guess we'll wait & see. It's difficult to step into anyone's shoes much less Chesters. I sympathize with her & wish her & LP the best, even if it's not my cup of tea.
They did change some songs into higher keys, maybe that's something they might change in the future - Gibby
I'm glad that Linkin Park is back and move on. I wish them good luck. But with Emily in this band, I think I'll just go listen to LP's previous songs, Chester's Dead By Sunrise, Grey Daze and Stone Temple Pilots.
I will always love Mike and the rest of the members, now and then. I believe in Mike's decision.

What about what Chester’s son is saying? I know a lot of people write him off as some loon but he is still his son that quite clearly loved his father!
Anybody can say anything.... Its not his sons band, it wasn't even Chesters band... It was all of the band members equally. If one died and another steps away then the remaining members should be able to do what they want. They are obviously doing it respectfully, and they only did it because they felt it was right.
And Mike didn't love Chester ?? I have no reason to doubt Mikes love for Chester, quite the opposite, and no reason to question him when he trusts Emily. Jaime, on the other hand, i have hardly heard about, and to me he's just repeating what a lot of toxic gatekeeping fans are saying.
Funny thing is that i'm sure they just feel loyal to Chester, but i have a REALLY hard time believing Chester would ever be ok with their behavior.

There have been lots of rumours about interpersonal drama that I can't comment on without knowing the facts. To me, he seems desperate for an answer that may or may not be there and you can't blame him for that. I don't agree with him, but regardless of what he believes, I just hope he finds some peace - Gibby

Real fans don’t have to agree and like it. I’m one of them who is not for this. And if you were going to go on, find someone who sounds like Chester. Same thing applies to Alice In Chains. AIC died in my opinion when Layne died. Coming back is not the same and I’m not the same, I don’t listen to any Alice that Layne wasn’t a part of. I don’t and refuse to listen to current Alice with William. I will no longer be supporting LP and will only listen to LP that was with Chester.
This is where Mike and his team decided to get in front by putting Emily on stage singing, at the same time put out the video. The play was to get people to hear her before all the hate would come. Its was a, let her work speak . It was a big gamble for Mike going all in like that.

My problem with Emily is not that she is replacing Chester or joining LP. I love that LP is ready to move forward and create a new chapter and make music again. And Emily is very talented.
I did however find her apology weak and vague. Even though she distanced herself from Danny Masterson, she did not mention her involvement in harassing the victims of DM or directly say I am sorry to them.
But my real problem is that she absolutely is stil is an active member of scientology, and one of scientologys core pillars is a deep hatred of psychology, therapy, and modern treatment of mental health issues. And that hatred is what prompted L. RON Hubbard to write Dianetics and start scientology.
If Emily is still a still a true believer in Scientology, then she is not fit to step in for Chester Bennington.
Now we do know that she is still in the cult, but we do not know how much of the doctrine she believes in. She does still associate with Danny's wife and other members of Danny's inner Circle. They still accept her, and they definitely believe that Danny is innocent. And I don't think that they would accept her if she didn't share that belief.
So for me personally , I don't think her apology was genuine and I no longer think she is right for Linkin Park.

Admittedly, Scientology is bad.. its a cult. Clearly you know nothing about the cult they are, otherwise you wouldn't 'call her vague' or realize that she simply cannot be a part of that cult anymore as she identifies at gay.
But keep your hate and trying to push a narrative that is not true. They mention this within the video, and its clear you commented without even listening. Good job being everything Chester would be against by pushing hate and misinformation.
She had to be vague. If you know anything about scientology you know they dont like it when even ex members talk publicly bad about them. If she did come forward about it she would be putting herself and her family in danger. I think the fact that she is openly gay says alot and honestly i feel like people should focus on the music and not her personal life also alot of celebrities are in cults like these aswell like Tom Cruise but noone dares speak bad about him and people love him. I think people need to separate religion from her music career. I'm sure mike and the others have already talked about it with her and they probably expected the backlash.

This was the biggest P.R. Nightmare decision that they could ever have made. Anybody else literally would’ve been a better choice than an active Scientologist, whose mother is a member of the sea org, whose band was funded backed by, and contained Scientologists (dead Sara, she is still part of it) she did not publicly out Scientology, meeting she is in good, standing with Scientology, meaning, she is still a Scientologist. Why is anybody defending this if they call themselves a fan of Linkin Park, or ever supported Chester & his mission. No thank you.

My personal favorite mainstream band is the Killers and if Brandon Flowers passed away I would want them to preserve the band's legacy and let it rest. A vocalist is an integral identity to a band. You change that key sound, and you're no longer the same band. Let Chester and his legacy RIP. PS- his own son finds this tasteless too.

I like her, I liked her performance, I like the new song. But, as long as she is affiliated with Scientology (and she is a scientologist, there is no doubt about that just check out Gail Armstrong and her position in OSA), I just can't accept it.

@@PB-km7sg Because it's not so simple, you speach of compassion then have some for someone who was born into cult against her will. People should remember that people recruited into cult were at their low - searching for something good to believe in. Emily's mother was harrassed, tortured and abused by current cult leader David Miscavige into submission to write speeches and make appearences (documented well on Tony Ortega's blog). The people working there are probably not bad people, but they were brainwashed and twisted by horrible morals of cult's teachings and are used as tools for their leader. Emily was through their camps yet was able to express herself in music, give her band a listen (Dead Sara) maybe u can catch something. When Dead Sara formed in 2002 they were still teenagers, they wanted to create music and express themselves

@@krzewinek I have nothing against her personally, as a human being. But it is just unacceptable, that she is still affiliated with this billion dollar human trafficking child laboring family destroying organization.
Also their silence regarding this matter is proof for her still being a scientologist. She could be the folk hero, just imagine the amount of support she and the band would receive if she said "I'm not with Scientology anymore". But since this didn't happen, her position and the position of the band is quite clear.
All members of Dead Sara are known members of Scientology as well btw as well as most of her friends. Regarding her apology regarding Masterson (though she never mentioned his name as Scientology wouldn't allow her to) she is still friends with Mastersons inner circle of friends. Her mothers position in OSA is another sign, that apparently she does whatever Scientology wants her to do.
