  • Today, I'm sitting down with Dr Jen Gunter, a renowned obstetrician and gynecologist, to discuss the damaging legacy of viewing female physiology as toxic. In this thought-provoking segment from The Proof Podcast, we explore the societal and individual consequences of inadequate research, dismissal by patriarchal medical systems, and insufficient education about the female body.
Throughout history, women's health issues have been shrouded in shame and silence, leading to a lack of proper understanding and care. We delve into the impact of data voids, where misinformation can easily spread, and how this has hindered progress in women's health research.
Our discussion also touches on pivotal moments in history, such as the thalidomide tragedy, which exposed the dangers of excluding women from medical studies. We examine how convenience and bias have shaped the way pharmaceutical companies approach research, often at the expense of women's well-being.
    This segment particularly delves into:
    - The underappreciation of women's pain in healthcare settings
    - The need for greater investment in studying conditions like endometriosis and PCOS
    - The issue of obesity bias in PCOS diagnosis and treatment
    - The alarming reality of women being arrested for miscarriages due to abortion restrictions
Join us as we advocate for a shift in perspective, moving beyond a narrow focus on maternal health to a more comprehensive approach that prioritises women's lifelong well-being. Stay informed with the latest in women's health research and be part of the conversation on creating a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system.

Thank you for highlighting this topic. As an RN for 40 years I have also seen and experienced the gross inequalities in our broken medical system in the USA. A great deal of it I believe is rooted in the patriarchal nature of medicines history and exacerbated by a capitalistic system run amok which favored corporations (and males in particular). The earlier charity system in health and hospitals capitulated or was killed by the greed as well as our institutions of government especially of late. Women and the poor have suffered the most in care as well as investment in scientific studies. Some very bad studies have been used to skew evidence and picked up and cited as reason not to treat women’s health issues not specific to men by mostly male doctors. A new generation of women doctors are finally coming of age to protest but now they are “owned” by the corporate system and are less autonomous than when the AMA set the gold standard of practice. Now beauracrats and politicians who know zilch about medicine do! How come charity systems still get tax exempt status but do next to nothing anymore for advancement of healthcare and wellbeing for the marginalized? They just seem rich.

If that’s the case surely life expectancy would favour men not woman?

Some of what she said was true way back in the day, but she’s acting like little has changed since then. Referring today’s medical system as being patriarchal is kind of comical. Women’s cancer research gets way more funding than man’s cancer research does. How is that ‘patriarchal ’?
