I still haven't quite understood what this scene was for, even if seeing Carolyn and Hélène together in the same place was promising.

It's heavily speculated that Carolyn is still very much in the Twelve. When asked by Helene she doesn't answer, and we know she was one of the founding members in a previous iteration, but we suspect no more, but we can never be sure. And that "good you're learning line" at the end. Hmmm. Also, I think as characters they wanted to meet each other in person, there's only so much intel you can get indirectly, and meeting face to face you can suss out other aspects of the other person. Carolyn was calm and collected the entire time, meanwhile Helene was agitated and frustrated; and ultimately, we see that Carolyn was left standing when it was all said and done. So I think the scene was meant to show that Carolyn is the true spy master.

As I recall the only person shot in the back was villanelle and these two are more likely to stab you in the back.
