I really enjoy my commutes and always look forward to them. I remember being a little nervous when I first started. However, now I never feel that way. If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it.
That is why we need to integrate cycling with rail & bus services, and plan a bit of strategic addition to the rail network - eg a river crossing to connect between Hillington (or Paisley via Renfrew and SGH) and Hyndland. Strategically it would pick up a substantial traffic between Gartnaval and SGH,(
I am one of the cars you pass in this video. It is worth reminding people that it's not USUALLY this congested along this stretch at this time, there were roadworks at the Clyde Tunnel causing huge tail backs. It is also worth reminding some people that whilst mass cycling is a real thing to strive for, for many like myself it is too far a distance and inefficient to cycle to work, regardless of wishes to do so.
Yes it was unusual. I think I mention that a few times in the video. However, it is not unusual for me to hit a queue from just as you enter the Glasgow boundary or slightly further down at the canal bridge. I've got a few other videos demonstrating this. I should add I cycle in from Torrance....but yes cycling will not be for everyone, but you'd be surprised how many are coming from near by.
Do you find you're usually able to relax of a morning/evening when cycling through traffic? I'm not able to commute by bike at the moment, but I have a feeling I'd spend much of my time bricking it, waiting to be side swiped.
I heard a statistic that there's been a 38% increase in traffic, but only a 3% increase in road infrastructure. Maybe it's time the UK created a 'Carpool lane' system like some of the major US cities?
ahh but at the end of any really horrible traffic jam, is a set of roadworks the authorities in Glasgow told no one about, that happens on Balmore road as well.
car to clear the exit of a parking space/get on to the motorway, just work out the cumulative time to get 20,000 cars on to the M8/roads out of the city. Each 6-7-coach train coming in to Glasgow Central has a seated capacity of 500-600 & crush loading of around 1000 people - it takes under 15 minutes to get in from places like Lenzie & Paisley, with around 10 trains per hour from Paisley, & capacity for more than that. There are more people moving on the 10 ft footway of Union St vs 40ft road
Madness. If they called it a "bring your living-room to work" day, people would say it was crazy, but there they sit, day after day. . . About the last thing that's needed is encouragement for more people to do the same - where are they planning to park them all? Yet encouraging active travel would not only make the roads clearer for those that really need to use them, but help to deal with Scotland's reputation as the heart attack capital of the world.
thats a fair point- but the thing is if people who lived close to where they work, study or run errands etc just jumped ont he bike every now and then it would make it much easier/ less congested for those who travel long distance
Put more simply you will get around 200 people per minute on foot - slightly fewer on bikes through a lane width exit route how many in cars through same space?
This is because of all the posh people traveling from Bearsden and Milngavie to work in Glasgow just before they drop their posh kids of at Glasgow High and Jordan Hill :P I couldn't go through that everyday I would have to leave early just to miss it out, it would be worth it just to avoid the stress.
in the morning and evening the roads around here are deserted. At 17.00 a solid jam of traffic runs back West along Sauchiehall Street trying to get on to the M8 by 18.30 the road can be completely empty right back as far as the eye can see. More motorways will simply feed more cars on to the roads coming off those motorways, and the stupidity of having over 20,000 parking spaces in the city centre will doubtless be fuelled by ... building more parking spaces. If it takes 10 seconds for each
"the more roads are built, the more traffic there is to fill these roads" en[dot]wikipedia[dot]org/wiki/Lewis%E2%80%93Mogridge_Position Here at Budapest (and in Hungary) there are same traffic jams, but we are not allowed to filter, only pass on the right side of stopped vehicles, and only during red lights. So be happy you are allowed to filter :)
Fysic86, road tax was abolished some time before we were born. The "tax" you talk about is based on the emmisions a vehicle produces, known as VED. Similar to electric cars, cyclists do not produce emmisions, and therefore road tax cost is £0. Second
Madness - Of course the two need not be mutually exclusive. There is a strong economic argument for better infrastructure linking the NE to the Central Belt in particular. But there is an equally compelling argument that people need to leave the car behind in towns and cities - I'll bet most of the cars you passed we're doing journeys of 8 miles or less - Very bikeable distances.
I'm glad I work at night, I get to avoid all this crap in Glasgow. The reason I wouldn't cycle to work is i'm much too lazy, even if I had to sit in such traffic in the Switchback.
A 30-second Wikipedia search says that the M1 was widened many, many times since 1960. Why not turn the entire country into motorway? That way we could drive directly from our doorsteps Wiki also says "Existed: 1959-60 - present History: Completed in 1999" but then has: "2 Current developments... 3 Proposed developments..." The number of vehicles will simply expand to fill the available space.
It was also only designed to have about a quarter of the number of junctions it actually has. Why they made so many junctions I have no idea, because now you have all the local traffic which the M25 simply wasn't designed for. Although that's fine by me. Let all those guys sit on the M25 for hours while I cycle home. Suits me just fine.
Do the sums. Say 2million car owners in scotland at £200 VED - £400m/year. New 9 mile M74 extension £750m. New Forth crossing £2000m. Who is subsidising the cars?
Yes we DEFINATELY need MORE Motorways. Close the railways and build motorways on them and close cycle lanes to allow for car parking at side of road. Cyclists dont pay for the roads so have no write to be there
03.08 - That's the same guy with the trailer who nearly took you out - still hasn't fixed the lights on the trailer! Now if that was a bike folk would soon be ranting about cyclists with no lights! Shows what creatures of habit we are - you'll need to get an ANPR filter and look out for Mr Shreddies (breakfast while I drive) and other regulars. By the look of things you're doing better than overtaking 3000 vehicles per hour this time.
OTOH, we could avoid spending money to encourage more driving. You know what will happen with a new motorway? It will look like the road in the video within 5 years. Just like the M25.
Speaking of Motorways David. If I was on a motorway in the inside lane, and you were next to me in the middle lane and I suddenly decide to pull out around a slow moving vehicle without looking or signalling, Does that sound right to you? NO? Well its exactly the same principal if you are on your bike pal and you pull out round a parked car without signalling or looking. Why should other road users have to suddenly jump out of your road???
Come to Charing Cross and you'll see why Keith Brown's thinking is away with the fairies. Only 35% of Glasgow households own a car and that number is falling. Many do not use their car more than once in a week, Some less than that, and I've persuaded at least 2 of my ndighbours to dump their cars and join the car sharing club. This incidentally boosts their disposable income by a MINIMUM of £2000/year without increasing the National wage bill or their Tax Code. Outside 2 brief periods.. contc
local taxation pays for the up keep of local roads, trunk and motorways central gov .RFL for pays nuclear deterrents the queens 16% pay rise politicians expenses. all those car drivers paid for IDS's and Osborne's £35 breakfast and burger
Secondly, 4 to 6 bikes cN fit in the same space as a car, reducing congestion by obviously a fair amount, and lastly, do you deem it suitable for child cyclists to pay tax? A bike can be the only way of someone who is under the age of driving age to get from A to B. why don't you do a bit of research for posting nonsense comments
Whats the point of building more cycle lanes??? You don,t cycle in them half the time anyway?? You're out hogging the main carriageway trying to instigate a situation so you can snare some poor unsuspecting motorist and have them tried prosecuted and hung on a public webpage. All to make you feel full of your own importance. Some of your videos I agree, that its bad driving, thats caused a problem, but the majority of them its all Big DRAMA QUEEN stuff. People are losing sympathy with you fast!
What's even better is a nice walk on a lovely spring day.
I really enjoy my commutes and always look forward to them. I remember being a little nervous when I first started. However, now I never feel that way. If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it.
Oh and my wife was in one of those cars as well! Took her about 50 minutes from Canniesburn toll to the SGH!

I was there at about....8:30am ish! You must have been in a dream.... ;-)
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

thats a fair point- but the thing is if people who lived close to where they work, study or run errands etc just jumped ont he bike every now and then it would make it much easier/ less congested for those who travel long distance
I must have left later then, still got into Glasgow for ten past 9 though. Hate The rush hour.
Put more simply you will get around 200 people per minute on foot - slightly fewer on bikes through a lane width exit route how many in cars through same space?
Judging by all the cars standing still, what Scotland needs is MOAR PARKIN SPACE! :)

Coming off M80 on to M8 before 07.10 and you'll be on Kingston Bridge in around 10 minutes at 07.30 it may take you 30 minutes or longer

Good point; my apologies.
Is this level traffic normal? It's not what the TV adverts show ;-)
A 30-second Wikipedia search says that the M1 was widened many, many times since 1960. Why not turn the entire country into motorway? It is quite simple. Motorways in themselves can't. Tacking active travel onto motorways, or dedicating more space on arterials to active travel can.
Slight difference mate. Speeds and such. If a car is going past a stationary cyclist at 10mph then 1ft is fine.
It was also only designed to have about a quarter of the number of junctions it actually has. Why they made so many junctions I have no idea, because now you have all the local traffic which the M25 simply wasn't designed for. Although that's fine by me. Never in a million years would I drive that journey. Crazy! Waste of time and fuel.
Not really sure how more motorways = more cars...?
More motorways = same amount of cars but with less congestion? Maybe..
Do the sums. Say 2million car owners in scotland at £200 VED - £400m/year.
New 9 mile M74 extension £750m. New Forth crossing £2000m. Who is subsidising the cars?
ohh i bet it wouldnt be for magnatom
Yes l agree with you ... but youv`e a habit of NOT using the CYCLE lane, Mr Numpty

Possibly true haha
It's days like these that make me a smug cyclist.
Also, how many cars had only the driver in them?

Come to Charing Cross and you'll see why Keith Brown's thinking is away with the fairies.

Air con on overdrive.
Soul destroying.
Obviously, petrol is still too cheap.
P.s. i drive a car and a also a cyclist.
YOU need a cycle lane
On the plus side...on a motorway they wouldn't have to watch cyclists roll past them while they're stuck.
you must have felt so smug just whizzing past all of these motorists who are apparently held back by us cyclists lol
local taxation pays for the up keep of local roads, trunk and motorways central gov .RFL for pays nuclear deterrents the queens 16% pay rise politicians expenses. all those car drivers paid for IDS's and Osborne's £35 breakfast and burger
as if ?!. LOL
