This is the 5th video in my mini restoration series about the 1998 STX 1100. I acquired the ski earlier this year, and have been busy fixing broken parts and sorting out issues. I had a persistent “limp mode” I couldn’t diagnose, and the repair ended up being something very simple and cheap. Stay tuned for more content on this ski and hopefully some cool ocean rides!
Here’s what I have replaced so far:
Fuel petcock (used)
New marine Fuel lines
New Fuel filter
Swapped CDCV to CDk2 carbs
Rebuilt carbs with oem kits
New spark plugs
New battery
New (used) display
New seat covers
New traction mats
New cooling hoses and clamps
New exhaust hoses
New oil pump block off plate
Running Rec 90 fuel with Klotz TechniPlate synthetic oil premixed at 60:1
That was my first ski. Its never left me stranded, a little tuff to start at times.
That’s awesome! Yea I noticed that the CDK2 carbs with the accelerator pump make it much easier to start than with the CDCV carbs
Nice to know Kawasuki gives a complimentary "oh 💩" paddle. Nice to see that thing finally on the water.. great job man
Yeah it only took me 6 months to figure out it was the exhaust hose 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Nice JD! Glad you got the old girl back on the water! Thanks for posting!
Brings back alot of memories, Cant believe you can still get Parts for it, Thanks for Sharing your knowledge, and the experience of Riding it, Kawasaki has Come along way from that Ski to the 2022 Ultra's that we are Riding now, B Safe
Yeah you can get basically every part for it still directly from Kawasaki! Definitely hope to ride again soon! Will be nice when it starts to cool down in a few weeks
Sounds Great, am ready @@JDsWaterWorld
yes!!!!!! man i'm soooo happy you got it running!
Great job JD! Can’t wait to see more of old girl out on the water.
Billy D
Very helpful thanks.
Make sure to check out my other videos on the STX as well- I learned a lot about the ski hopefully can save you some time! Especially the way sand packs up the cooling system
Finally, lol! Good to see it running. What speeds you thi k you were getting? Low 50's?
Yeah prob 52/52. The Speedo works but one of the wires from the paddle wheel is broken so I have to solder it
Exhaust tube duped me bro I swaped 5 engines before I found it in short I can pull a Kawi trip in 29 min now 😂
What a chore to get to the solution, but congrats on how fast you can get that done! My daughter has her 2 skis from 1999 parked at my house, a 900 and an 1100, and as soon as I drop new batteries in them, I'm going to see how well they run. I remember using them about 5 years ago, and one was really smoky, so I'm guessing it's worn rings. I don't understand the oil injection on these, so am not sure if it could be something like too much oil being fed into the fuel. Do you know anything about resolving the "too much blue/white wxhaust smoke" issue?
The rings have nothing to do with it..probably the type of oil you are using..pump it out and replace with a better oil. I suggest Klotz TechniPlate synthetic 2 stroke oil, it's low smoke and ash.
That’s awesome✔️
Dam. I can’t believe Adam Sandler is on JD’s RUclips channel
Hey I am much better looking than Adam Sandler 🤣🤣
@@JDsWaterWorld lmfao. So I take it. I’m not the First one to say you look like him
Nope lol I’ve definitely heard it a few times over the years.
Quick question. When you installed the cdk2 carbs, did you drill the case to add another pulse line, or just put a Tee in the original. Thanks
I just added a plastic automotive style T to the single pulse line. I did have to bend the throttle cable support plate a bit back because the throttle cable on the STX was not adjustable and was a bit too long. I have not had any issue with the single pulse line.
@@JDsWaterWorld thanks so much. Been hearing conflicting advice. Could you post a pic of how you bent the bracket. I heard you had to modify the throttle cable to make it work, but was not exactly sure of what needed to be done. Was thinking about ordering a 1997 1100 cable, but seems like it may not be needed.
It was really easy- if you go to my channel description you will find my email- shoot me an email and I’ll send you some pics. I removed the bracket, put it in a vice, then used a hammer to bend the plate about .5 in towards the exhaust. Then use the adjustment nuts to secure the end of the cable basically as far away from the carb body as possible. No mod needed other than that. I would prefer an adjustable cable..or maybe the cable from 97 as you mentioned is a bit shorter?
Nicely done. I’m picking up a ‘98 tomorrow on a trailer for $900. It doesn’t have spark, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to get it up and running.
Be wary…could be stator, could be ignitor box, could be expensive and a wild goose chase..maybe negotiate the price down a bit $900 seems steep for a non running STX1100…
@@JDsWaterWorld where I live at, that’s a good price. I was a jet ski mechanic for many years, so I’m very familiar with the Kawasaki 1100’s. Besides, the trailer is easily worth half of the asking price.
Oh ok great- well if you know what you are doing you’ll get it sorted out! I do love the 1100 STX- I got rid of the 1998 CDCV carbs and got a set of CDK2 carbs from a 1997 STX. The CDCV are not tunable so they were a bit of a sore point for me and the diaphragms were way too expensive. Good luck with it, hope you get it going soon!
@@JDsWaterWorld I ended up getting it for $450. It’s a ‘99 and as it turns out, someone put cdkii carbs on it already. The trailer is mint, so that’s worth more than the price I paid.
How did u tune the ck2 carbs???
I did the swap on a 900stx and can't get the carbs right...BTW I did drill a 2nd pulse line@@JDsWaterWorld
Need more videos on this
What do you want to see?
Get on the water on any budget! 🤙
Buying it was the easy part…I’ve spent thousands getting it running right and replacing all the parts that were worn out.
Do you have any videos of changing the starter solenoid 1998 Kawasaki stx 1100 jetski?
No, but it's very simple- you pop the cap off the ebox and it's right there.
Were you able to use the same throttle cable? After switching CDCV to CDKII seems like the cable is a bit long. Thanks
You need to tighten the adjustment nuts on the cable support bracket all the way and might need to bend the bracket slightly away from the carbs to pick up the .5 on of slack. You can make it work with some adjusting OR order the throttle cable for a 1997 model OR purchase a generic adjustable throttle trigger from Riva or Unlimited
@@JDsWaterWorld Thanks for confirming! The other thing for people to note is that after switching from CDCV to CDKII is the airbox will no longer align to the SS bracket on the head (CDKII apparently slightly shorter). Minor point but wanted to share
Good point, yes, I removed this bracket
Team green for the win
Great! Did u do many turns? Drop the throttle. Crank the bars. Punch it! Hang on! Everybody loved how that thing turned! Your 98 should have the hooked sponsons. My 97 came with the flat no lip sponsons. Changed to the 98, actually the 96 ZXI sponsons. Much better grip. Fun ski. Hate I ruined mine.
Ah good to know! I will be taking it on a real ride- this was literally just a first test in the channel just to see wether or not I finally sorted it out. It’s not registered yet, so have to go to the DMV first…I did a few mild turns and it’s pretty responsive. The seating position is so much different than the Ultra- this thing is really light and playful. Yeah yours had the CDK2 carbs I have now, but I did not know that the 98 sponsons were the same as the 96 ZXI! Kawi Performance sent me their pump kit and a stainless Solas for the ski too so can’t wait to get that impeller on!
Nice. Correct. Totally different. Especially at your height. Its a low rider! Have you seen the egg Kawi laid for 2024? Guess I have to give them credit for the 310s in 2022 and 160s in 2023. 24 is a total yawn. They did add green sponsons to your LXS and green "fenders" in the front. Like they did on the Orange LXS.
Do you have the number of turns on set screw for the keihin triple carb for 96 1100 stx?
Low speed is 1 1/8 +/- 1/4 turn and high speed is 1 +/- 1/4 turn. Fully seat the needles gently making sure not to damage the seats, then back out specified number of turns. Run the engine, then do plug chop and richen or lean as necessary, but never turn screws in more than the specs above or you’ll cook the pistons.
@JDsWaterWorld thanks greatly appreciate it.
Where is the 20 min pop off pressure video!? 1:45
Do you want me to post it?
Could you pkess help!!? I rebuilt my cdcv carbs, changed the low speed jet from a #35 to a #50 and the pop off is at about 25. The ski idles but when you give it gas it dies. Fuel sender looks good, i have new spark plugs, i adjusted it to 1/4 turn out as well as 7/8 and a whole turn. Idles then dies when you hit the throttle. 99 stx
The CDCV carbs have many issues mostly relating to the vacuum diaphragms wearing out..they are exorbitantly expensive. I gave up on the CDCV and switched to the CDK2 carbs. I would not waste my time or money on the CDCV…
I am confused though because the CDCV don’t have adjustment screws…
They are behind caps that you have to drill out
Did you check the fuel pressure? Those diaphragms are a pain…
Also check the fuel tank vent line- check the hose itself and the port on the sender assembly. Some of them had a jet in the vent line or return line, make sure all is clear
