Diagnosing & Fixing Sudden Power Loss on a 1998 Kawasaki STX 1100 Jet Ski [4K]
My 1998 STX 1100 has been running great and so we took it out in the ocean for a ride. We experienced a loss of power coming back in the inlet and the ski would not exceed 25 mph.
It turns out a broken spark plug wire was the cause of the issue!
In this video I cover my diagnostic process which included doing a compression test and checking the fuel tank vent line. I found the broken spark plug wire very quickly and was able to avoid having to conduct additional diagnostic.

Did they die?
Hahaha this ia great!
It performed great when it ran good though!
Hahah I was impressed with how hard you rode that thing in the ocean!
Cheers again man. Awesome JD thanx. 🙂👍
Super weird! I’ve been fighting mine to get all 3 to get fuel and fire correctly, on 2 cylinders mine did 38mph, and felt fine, until I checked one of the plugs and it was still brand new. Figured that issue out but then had a plug wire come off like yours and it backfired like hell and wouldn’t even attempt to rev up once one stopped firing completely
It was a struggle to keep it running on the 2 cylinders...I had to goose the throttle to get up to speed and keep it running. My ski will do 55 mph easy with me on it and hits 60 with my wife who's half my weight lol
Wasn’t crazy about the 2 f bombs you dropped. But good information and tutorials as always. Keep it up. I promise you I’ll start cranking out content at the start of the year. I might do a New Year’s Day ride but other than that my ski will be in for the long winter’s nap and I won’t get it out again until middle of March. Some of what I have planned might surprise you
Same... The seasons limit me. The water is cold and rough around here. Not enough calm days around Scotland for my liking 😂.
Whoops sloppy editing I guess. If I didn't edit them out there would be 20 in each video, minimum
@@JDsWaterWorld I get frustrated and let some profanity out at times but genuinely I try not to swear.
@@SAABROSSoh how I wish it didn’t get below freezing here. You’d think I’d be far enough south for it not to but it does get pretty cold during the winter
Nice to see jet ski safety on the top of their list. 😂🎉
thanks for this JD. I got a leftover 2023 LX-s for a killer price...out the door with trailer, tax and 5 year warranty for just over what the MSRP is for the 2024's. Too late in the season to start riding here so will be riding my daughters 2020 Sea doo gti se until it gets cold to get my sea legs, so to speak. Glad to see the proper break in procdure for my new baby. Thanks! subscribed. 🙏👍
I'm guessing it's tidal and it got hung up in the mangroves.

Did I hear you say something about being able to stay out until it started raining? I thought about that and then I realized, "Well of course you guys would go in if it rains. You sure wouldn't want to get wet." Hahaha. Seriously, I loved this video. Often times the camera doesn't give the sensation of speed but you guys KILLED it! These Kawis are seriously fast! I get to watch this on a giant screen 4G TV with the sound turned up and it's the next best thing to actually being there. Thanks so much for the ride along.
Awesome! Thanks for the comment! I try to upload everything in 4k when possible for that exact reason! When I wear my helmet and mast the rain is no bother- but without the water droplets hit you in the face very hard! I am one of those people that does not mind getting wet on the ski at all. I have dozens of videos like this one of ocean rides- really appreciate your comment as my goal was to provide quality POV shots that were immersive!
Yamis are always in the air 😆
Shit 🥴😬, came in hot! 🤣😂🤪
Hello JD, thanks for the information. Where can i buy the original then?
Reputable sources I can recommend: Kawi Performance, Riva Racing, Kspeed, Napa Auto Parts or your local Kawasaki dealer
@@JDsWaterWorld Thank you so much
Hey any advice on 2023 310x . My key don’t beep and turn over the screen when I put it in so i thought my battery was dead I tested the battery I got 12.4 voltage . What else can it be is it a bad key ?
Have you had the wire harness recall completed?
@@JDsWaterWorld no i haven’t
@@JDsWaterWorld I figured there was other things to check before I went straight for that but I will call my dealer I guess I need to make that appointment there go the end of my summer
Yeah on such a new ski there shouldn't be any issues you may have on an older ski so my bet would be it's the known harness issue!
@@JDsWaterWorld thanks for you feed back now I know where to start tomorrow morning calling my dealer
Kawasaki even makes machines that make the rims for Yamaha ATVs.
Do they really? Hahah
@@JDsWaterWorld Yup. They make a lot of industrial machines for companies that do various things. It’s sort of like how Amazon makes a bulk of their money from their hosting side of things. This is how they can sell products cheaper than many other places, and do the whole prime thing. Kawasaki Heavy Industries makes a bulk of their money, like you said making trains, as well as other machines. So they can keep their motorsports division alive, especially the JetSki line, which as you know has the lowest market share.
You can match a belt at your local part store. More heavy duty. Lifetime warranty as well.
I would want someone to buy one from Napa or something and confirm the longevity before I try it
I was planning to try this. Have you?
Great tip. You recommend, I buy:-)
Haha the west marine one is the best I've found so far..still going strong!
Just check my oil level from previous owner in my drive way with level.the dip stick reads very high and over the top notch. Would oil reading be more accurate if I had the ski running in the water , or running water from hose in my drive way? I don’t have hose adapters yet for hose. Just do not Wa t to do damage by having too much oil. If I do indeed have to much oil should I get an extractor and remove 1/4 to 1/2 quart and keep measuring? Hoping to go out on lake this week but concerned at high oil readings with cold engine/ What say you sir?
You can't check the oil while the ski is running- level should be the same warm or cold. Are you using a bubble level on the valve cover to confirm the engine is 100% level?
@@JDsWaterWorld yes sir. Using your bubble level tip from your video. Oil about 1/4 above the top notch bend of oil stick
Yeah a bit high..won't damage the engine or anything but will cause extra oil to be puked into intercooler which makes a nasty mess over time. Water vapor mixes with the oil and causes a white yogurt like substance of emulsified oil and water to clog up the catch can and hoses..you can pull the hoses off the catch can and check to see if they look like a clogged artery
@@JDsWaterWorldfantastic answer sir. I’m on several jet ski forums and sending people to your video library for answers. You by far have the best knowledge base of anyone out there. Greatly appreciated sir.
JD, I’m going out for my second ride today on my ‘22 ultra 310 lx-s. I checked my oil level with cold engine and my oil is above the top notche which looks high to me. Would I get a more normal reading with a warm engine? ---- I don’t have hose adapters yet to run water and have engin going yet. --- I believe on a different video you mentioned that too much oil can be damaging? Just wondering if my high reading is due to cold engine.
Will not matter if it's cold or warm, but you need to make sure that the engine is perfectly level using a bubble level. Raise or lower the tongue of your trailer as necessary until the engine is 100% level or your reading on the dipstick will be wrong. if the oil is overfilled, it will force excessive oil into the can, and then into the airbox and then into the intercooler you don't wanna overfill these machines
@@JDsWaterWorld thank you jd. I did indeed level the ski per one of your instructional videos (I’m learning a lot from you and sending people to your video library) and being perfectly level, the oil was was almost 1/4 inch ABOVE the top notch on the dip stick. --- Is this considered too much oil? So I decided to not go to the lake. If in your opinion this is too high a reading , then I will purchase the oil extractor you recommend and remove some oil and then have oil on hand if I remove too much. I will keep doing a little at a time and checking dip stick. So glad about your videos as I remembered you saying somewhere "do not overfill your oil." I’m finding out some dealerships for whatever reason on occasion overfill with too much oil.
Yeah not a bad idea to take a bit back out! The west marine brand extractor is the most durable out of all the ones I've bought over the years!
Will this tune void warranty ? Is there a way to have it and then remove it without it being detected
The tune should not void your warranty, but you can flash it back to the original stock tune before bringing in into a dealer if you want to using the K speed tune box
@@JDsWaterWorld sounds good 👍
I need some help, please! I've been watching all your videos and love them. In May of this year, both of my jet skis, a 2022 LX 310 and an LXS 310, were stolen along with their trailer. Luckily, I was able to locate them using GPS, but I discovered that both jet skis were missing their ECUs. I ordered brand-new OEM ECUs from a Kawasaki dealer, and they have been installed. At the same time, both jet skis had a recall for harnesses, which have also been replaced. On the first day on the water, everything was fine. I used both jet skis with a friend for about two hours, reaching speeds of up to 67 mph with no issues. However, on the second and third outings, the RPMs would increase when pressing the throttle, reaching around 4000-5000 RPM, but then drop rapidly to about 1500 RPM. When I set the jet ski to slow mode, it ran somewhat better, but I still noticed the RPM dropping. When switching to FPo or MPo mode, the RPMs increase and decrease more quickly, and the jet ski won’t go over 40 mph. I haven’t yet gone through all the five steps you mentioned in your video, but I plan to, as it’s unusual for both jet skis to have the same problem simultaneously. Do you have any advice? Thanks!
How old is the fuel? That would be my first red flag if that's old fuel in there...
@@JDsWaterWorld Fuel was old 8-9 months (half tank, I was refilling first day), each time I go on the lake I spend around half tank and after I refill 93 octane, today I put K100, first 2h jet ski was working perfectly, third hour RPM went down constantly, speed is going up but with those twitching. So far this season I spent around 35 gallons.
Is it possible to install Linq fittings on a Ultra deck? Maybe a video on that? 💪
No clue, I don't really use accessories other than a stern bag or the fuel/cooler rack
I have thought of installing the Recdec from Sea Doo on the Ultra deck. But that means you buy that deck from Sea Doo and then have to buy their expensive accessories. I found a company called Yak Attack. They are VA based and make a lot of their stuff in the US. I bought their tie down brackets to use on the Ultra Deck rails. A pair of US made strap brackets are $20. Then bought one of their 12ft straps. (They have a video on the strap. Very high quality) this system works great and I can use my 30 yo gas cans that are not ruined by the EPA. I have logged literally hundreds of miles now. Hauling two 5 gallon cans. That is far more capacity than Sea Doo Recdec cans and way cheaper. It is simple to strap down. No tools needed other than an allen wrench to remove the factory track plugs. Once they are out no tools required. The Kawi tie down brackets are more expensive and require an allen wrench to adjust and secure in the track. Yak Attacks do not. Doubt the Kawi ones are made in USA either. As a bonus the straps are black and orange matching my 160LXS.
Couldn’t you just weld the honeycomb element to the flange to prevent it from breaking off? Just curious
The honeycomb element inside the ring degrades very quickly as well but assuming you had a rig to weld stainless steel..sure you could
Does the camera only turn on at 5mph, or will it turn if the jet ski is idling?
The camera must be turned on manually but works at any speed. You must be under 3,000 rpm to use the Jog dial or it's locked out

I will say that I love the handlebar bag accessory for the STX-160. Kawasaki did a good job on that. High quality velcro and stitching. You can see it on one of those pictures I sent you
Their accessories are very high quality- I have the soft cooler, stern bag, rack, and dry bag and all are holding up well so far
Just want to say a big thank you to you JD. I just used this same setup. Just did a 4 day trip from Huntington Long Island to Canada up the Hudson River. Straps never loosened and Rotopaxs never budged. It is a heavy set up, but I think the ski rode better.
Great videos .... where do you buy the gas cans, to fit x3 in the cargo rack .... all the ones i can find are to wide to ift x3 :(
The ones in the video are Blitz 5 gal jugs but there are now illegal in the US so you must either find them used or find alternative ones that fit.
