As battery/motor/etc technology improves, it can be incorporated into the vehicle without scrapping it. Car manufacturers should take note. This approach on your electrics could be a huge competitive advantage.

I don't know who's behind the channel, but all the presenters here are well-known and respected presenters on british tv, for the last 10-15 years or more. Jonny Smith here is a motoring journalist and presented "Fifth Gear" for about 10 years, Robert Llewellyn presented "Scrap Heap Challenge" and also played Kryten in "Red Dwarf", and Helen Czerski (who did the fusion video a few weeks back) presents physics documentaries for the BBC. Icon is a great concept to revitalize these classics and show the world what an EV car can truly be and do! Again thanks Johnny for the always comprehensive review and look for all EV vehicle.
There is a guy on my street that converts classic cars for himself and sells a few. When he passes my house in his roadster with the top down I smile... even though it runs on gas. At the time Tesla was still a babe in the woods, but I see a few classics rusting and want them restored and made into EV's. FC has shown me that my desire for these classic gorgeous shapes that had character ( something car design is still sorely missing in every segment and price point for the most part) are being loving modified for the future. I love these episodes and the fact that we won't have to loose the bright spots of our past to enjoy a future.
Keep these vids coming! Classic car conversion to electric is the ultimate car recycling bringing back soul and longevity to cars. We need more of these conversions and access to them. Too bad the production is so costly now, but it shall get better.

I love electric resto-mods. I grew up with an 89 Honda prelude and my parents still have it but it sits in the garage now because it has so many issues and finding parts for it now is kinda hard. Seeing conversions like this over the past couple years has made me want to take the prelude off my parents hands and completely convert it to electric, modernize the interior, and keep my childhood car alive in the future.
A perfect fusion of old and new. Kudos to a humble, unassuming man who is obviously an engineering genius that loves what he does. When Tesla are up to full production, they could have a nice profitable sideline in selling drive trains to enthusiasts.
I've known about Icon's gasoline cars for years. So when I saw Icon and Fully Charged, I assumed I read it wrong. I love that Icon is now into EV and that Fully Charged is giving them the attention they have earned. Two greats!

Friggin' brilliant, waiting 30 days now for the finished product and video. That guy is sooooooooo passionate about what he is doing. It's a breath of fresh air.
Cool shop and cool car. I find the "Things were much better back in the old days" story tiresome though. Cars in the '40s -'70s were not well engineered or made to last. In my teens in the early '70s I wandered area junkyards studying cars and occasionally buying one to take home to autopsy. It was uncommon to come across a junked car with even 100,000 miles on the odometer. Cars were made of huge slabs of stamped steel because both steel and gas were cheap. Heavy body panels were the only way they could keep body-on-frame bodies relatively straight. Panels were fitted together with slots upon slots. Panel gaps were enormous. Engine tolerances were an absolute joke by today's standards. Yes, they were easier to repair. That was required because they so often needed repair. No, the old Merc could not pass a side impact test. I too am enamored by some '50s and '60s design elements and I'm glad to see these old cars being converted to EV. Especially so when I look at how they help give a desirable image to electric transportation. But that revisionist history "The old days were better" storyline that so many people willingly buy in to is unhealthy for our society in areas far beyond the expensive restomod scene.
There's an amazing video of a crash test between a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu and a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air that's worth checking out. The classic car just disintegrates, whilst the modern one would leave the driver mostly unharmed.
@@drunkenhobo8020 And... it's rigged. The engine was removed from the Bel Air and other modifications made to make for a more dramatic video. Yes, any car from the '50s isn't safe by today's standards. They were incredibly deadly in head on collisions. I just thought it undermined the point of the video to fake it. I guess putting in calibrated dummies and adding up the damage points would make for a boring video.
I love old cars, but you are absolutely correct in your assessment. Old cars survived an impact by killing their occupants. Energy from a collision must go somewhere: if it's not deforming the vehicle's body then it's likely deforming yours. Old cars leaked fuel, oil, and water and also required frequent maintenance way beyond what would pass today. It was not uncommon to put pans or cardboard sheets under even new vehicles to see if they would ruin your driveway. Creaks whistles and squeaks were audible over the engine noise. Initially derided as "Jap-crap" it was, somewhat ironically, the Japanese manufacturers that raised the standards (instilled by W. E. Deming, an American) of vehicles.
Thanks Bill, for the clarity...it's a dangerous game comparing across era's but the false memory undermines a lot of the ability to compare details and be more precise about what worked and what didn't and why. The reason a lot of the old ways changed was exactly because the buyers didn't want them anymore..for a reason.
Well cars from the 90's and early 2000's can and have successfully made it into 500k+ miles territories. Not all of them obviously, but I know far more examples of high mileage E34 and E39 than E60. There are many W124 that made it over 1kk kilometres, but not the W201. Toyotas from early 2000's, barely ever break down. Ironically most modern cars have more problems with electronics (and sometimes it's just the wiring), rather than mechanics.
Really enjoying the E/V evolution thing! Seemed like a whimsical joke to start with, and now I think there is no stopping and the world will be much better off! Still love the old I/C engines and vehicles I grew up with, but like me they are best left in past and kept alive by people who can afford it.

I totally agree...why some video producers seem to think sudden blurring and zooming in and out makes something look better is beyond me (its not in FC yet and I pray it never is).......its not realistic as in real life the brain acts like a gimble and smooths things out....whats wrong with a tripod?....just wants to make me turn off...its only in this vid in tiny bits and 95% of it was fine so am hoping its not the start of becoming more just for the sake of looking 'trendy' like the the Jason Bourne films awful use of shaky cam it just makes it unwatchable....great vid though and presentation as always.
I think on this trip we had a serious autofocus error on one of the cameras. Apologies.
@@TheLateBrakeShow
Yep. spoiled it a bit for me. No professional cameraman should be using autofocus at all; but especially not in a two-shot situation, as the camera will focus on the background in between.
Two of my favorite channels have intersected. Kudos!
One of the most interesting people building cars at the moment
I loooove icon as much as I love you guys so this was a huge treat! Very, very inspiring and great to see two of the coolest open minded classic car enthousiast I know together. Very cool!
Whatever he's doing next...i want it!
Nothing quite like when an engineer is comfortable with someone enough to show their excitement for their work.
Which one is the engineer? One's a journalist, the other is a child actor that turned to restoring cars.
🤣🤣🤣 The child actor that turned to restoring cars. Don’t let your past dictate your future.
I wanted to go and have my eyes checked after watching this, then realized the cameraman is the one who needs his eyes checked. Love the video, love the interview style and want to see more, please give the cameraman a hairnet and an apron and send him on his way.
This is one of the coolest episode so far. Awesome.
Great show love you being in southern California reporting on all the latest in EV's..
You and Icon! Incredible! You hit a home run with this!
You said it Jonny, please more classic EV cars..... the best of both worlds
What a great relationship you have there !
Well done, and yes let’s have more, what a great guy.
Ward is such a legend, he's brilliant on the smoking tyre podcasts
Big fan of both John and Johnny. Thanks for the collaboration with Fullycharged Mr. Ward. They're "quality", as are you. ;)
Sound lads, and ladies. Matching the car lift safety bolts with the music, good call!
What a top episode, Jonny truly feels like a mate! What a fantastic company Icon is, very inspiring. Thanks.
lol god idk whos better the guy being interviewed or the car. His personality is awesome and so enthusiastic lol. and like he said those cars are covering up such amazing work underneath! Be a real shame to crash one of em. they are one of a kind.
beautiful work and you can sense the enthusiasm of the owner/builder I would love to own a 49 Merc, the year I was born but while I can respect the build quality, probably much better than any Tesla, I wouldn't want a electric one
Hell yes, I've been waiting for Johnny to drive this beautiful thing
Only the English: "You artistic swine." LOL
That was a golden moment!
Timestamp? I must have missed it :(

@@hendrikdependrik1891 Thank you. Blessings of the universe to you and your friends. May your descendants be blessed with attractive bone structures and great wisdom.
This thread is so wholesome and I feel blessed to have read it :,'-)
True Tesla opened the door, your building the house for that door Jonathan. Awesome build with seriously clever tech, well done!
OMG - way to go ICON but even more -
thank you Fully Charged for sharing...
This is my favorite EV trend. That Thing is too cool.
It's a beauty! Looking forward to seeing you driving it. Thanks Jonny, and Jonathan too.
What a cool company! And great episode as always!
I love this guys vision, its the best form of recycling.
This car was featured in the classic Sylvester Stallone film Cobra. It's so cool to see such an iconic car being converted really thoughtfully to electric.
I love what this guy and his amazing company are doing 👍🏻👍🏻...fantastic cars with ultra modern drive train...taking what Elon and Tesla started and making it cooler and in beautiful classic cars ❤️
This is indeed the future and yes, I want a part in it. Great work!
Wow. Great video. I luv seeing the classics getting electrified.
"You artistic swine" had me laughing for a good few minutes.
This is so awesome makes me so happy, because now I can save up to get my 19 64 1/2 VW bug speedster edition compliant for the now which used to be the future and that’s electric amazing that you guys have the transmission functioning with the electric motor you guys rock thank God for you!
Großartig! Wenn ich die Kohle hätte, ich würde auch so einen Mercury bestellen egal was es kostet, der ist einfach der Wahnsinn.👍🏻
Not often I see Jonny lost for words, but you could see him totally into this as an experience. You could almost hear his mind whirring at the possibilities. That, or jet lag.
Such a beautiful work of art. I'm honestly shocked at the skill of those involved in this artwork. Congrats to the owner being able to purchase this. I'll never be able to sadly 😢
If I win the Mexican Lotería I’ll treat you to a car Andrew.
i liked all the talk about parts. Not interested in big boring car brands with giant marketing budgets - unless we're talking about the parts they use (or make). Hope to hear more conversations framed about parts as things go on. PARTS PARTS PARTS!
I would love to see him EV an old Land Cruiser, one of the early two-door no-frills type like the yellow one Jonny was standing next to at the close. Great video!
This is slightyly more amazing that Richie-B's ratrod!!! "If had money, I tell you what I'd do, I'd go down town and buy an electric Mercury or two 'cos I'm crazy 'about a Mercury..." [Apologies to KC Douglas]
