    My first monitor review! Sorry for the length, but this'll offer a good overview of how I intend to test monitors in the future.
    For those curious about my calibration settings for the LG:
    Red: 48, Green: 49, Blue: 50, Cyan hue: 46, Magenta Hue: 53
    The Dell P1130 CRT is a rebadged 21" Sony Trinitron.

    Awesome video! I've been using this monitor for a few years now, and I remember looking for reviews on this model not long after I bought it (not the best time, I know) but finding none except a couple in languages other than English. I'm still learning about monitors, and at the time I bought it I had no idea if it was any good, only that the specs looked right. I've been pretty happy with it though. It's my first high refresh rate monitor, so I don't really know any better. Anyway, thanks for this very detailed and informative review.

      Whoa! Not a lot of people watching this one recently! My reviews have improved... a lot since then. :) If you watch the reviews I've done in sequence, you'll probably learn more about monitors than you'd care to know. Same with me; I learned a ton as I was reviewing more and more. This all culminated in both Hardware Unboxed and TFT Central using a technique I developed for testing monitors.

      @@ApertureGrille Hehe. Yeah I found this video while looking through your old videos. I watched the one about response times and cumulative deviation, after it was linked in a Reddit group about monitors, and liked it so much I had see what else you'd done. To my surprise, there in the list, was my monitor :-)
      Your new technique is now the Gold Standard in many eyes, so well done!! I've watched a lot of videos in the last two days, having suddenly decided to do a deep dive into the subject before maybe buying a new one. I've subbed and "belled", and will definitely be watching some more!

    Really great review! I read that someone overlocked this monitor to 240hz stable, are there multiple revisions of this monitor or is it just panel lottery?

    • @ApertureGrille
      @ApertureGrille  4 года назад

      Mine will go past 170 Hz, but sudden changes in framerate cause the screen to freak out and flash. 170 Hz was the highest, "safe" refresh rate I could achieve.

      Thanks!
      I'd love to see a company bring CRTs back in at least some capacity, but I doubt it'll happen. Check out these internal shots I took of my Dell CRT:

      They're so complicated, I don't think anyone, even Sony, could make them again.

    • @ApertureGrille

      With adaptive sync on, mine will actually accept refresh rates above 170 Hz, but the screen will start flickering, so it's not stable.
      165 Hz shouldn't be a problem. That's a 14.5% increase in max framerate and corresponding freesync range.

    i heard that you can only achieve the 1ms with the motion blur reduction in this monitor, otherwise it's 5ms or 2ms not 1ms. And if you activate freesync you can't activate motion blur reduction leaving you with 5ms or 2ms. is that true?

    • @ApertureGrille
      @ApertureGrille  4 года назад +2

      Even with MBR, the backlight strobes for 2.3 ms, so the LG doesn't merit their "1 ms" claim. Be skeptical of any manufacturer saying anything about "1 ms." But in general, using FreeSync, the panel has good response times with reasonable overshoot. I did measure one First Response of 0.9 ms at 144 Hz, but most other transitions were totally fine.

    This review is good but you don't checked backlight of this monitor. It is a pity that this monitor don't have flicker free backlight system. It is used PWM system so it is flicker. For me this model is crap because PWM is not good for health of eyes. You should checked this because I can see that you have oscilloscope. You can check how tftcentral make PWM test and you can try to copy this methodology.
    P.S. I know that LG 24GM79G-B is not flicker free because polish website pclab checked this (oscilloscope test).
