For us black South Africans, living under apartheid was like living in auswitch camp for years!!! I was also at Yad Vashem in Israel, a memorial site about what happened during the Jewish holocaust, and I remember, the Jewish director made comparisons with African slavery, colonialism and apartheid. May we learn from history and resolve never to repeat it. I give information to my children when they ask me about apartheid from their history assignments, but I don't keep talking about what happened in the past as if my present life depends on it, and I also don't want my children to define themselves according to the past they had nothing to do with, and this is very important for me! I did not fully understand until I visited Dachau and saw and felt the grooves made by the finger nails of the dying in the concrete walls of the gas chambers. I recall several South African policemen visiting there, when they were in Europe. After looking at the facilities, they did smell the rat with the popularized narrative.
The narrative dominates while the atrocities of the allies on German civilians during and after the War. The allies bombed supply lines, food convoys, farms, dams etc. by the end of the war how could Germany ensure the wellfare of its facilities including the camps, their personell and interns. By the time the allies arrived to "liberate" the camps I can only imagine the state of everyone there.

No need to visit Auschwitz, almost every Country has a Holocaust museum. You can see shoes, spectacles and images on display at the Cape Town holocaust museum. Where are the memorials for the millions of Europeans killed by the bombings of Dresden, Potsdam, Berlin, Hamburg amongst others? Holocaust = decimation by fire.
The Jews were not the only people incarcerated in the camps, and except for one campe that was hit by allied bombs that I know of, the inmates were spared the atrocities of War and the real holocaust.

So I agree that we as Christians cannot deny the existence of history and tradition, and we also cannot live in it (we are forbidden to! Isaiah 43:18-19 & Ecclesiastes 7:10) , but we also need to be careful not to attach too much to tradition, particularly not that which is not in-line with our belief in Jesus Christ. I guess that this also explains N.P. van Wyk Louw's cognitive dissonance, he clearly gave it a lot of thought, and struggled with much of it, as so many of his works reveal.
Recognising that, as humans "we are rooted in tradition" becomes a parallel from a Christian perspective, because in much the same way, we are born in sin. We corrupt every thing that we touch. But it is not a excuse for it. At least not for Christians.

They were allegedly running the death chambers 24/7, but aerial photography never agreed (lack of chimney smoke).
Even the Red Cross failed to see anything evil there.
There were facilities before, during and after WW2. Birkenau was however build post 1940 first as a prisoner of war camp and then as a quarantine and holding facility. There is industrial areas all around those camps.

I did not fully understand until I visited Dachau and saw and felt the grooves made by the finger nails of the dying in the concrete walls of the gas chambers. Until it was pointed out to me the marks on the walls are made from the height of a child to that of an adult.
I walked out of there feeling my heart racing and realising I was holding my breath most of the time. I got out of there and fell on my knees begging the Lord for forgiveness. I was so affected that I missed the tour bus and had to take a taxi back to my hotel.
