I Got a Free Yet Still Amazing Welder - BUT ITS REALLY OLD

- I want to share with you what an old welder can still do because in my experience I believe that no matter how old the unit is, as long as it’s not broken you can still use it when you need an extra welder, especially if it can do stick welding. So I got this old stick welder from a client which he wanted me to see if it’s still working as he felt it’s a waste if he has to throw out an old unit. In other words, I got myself a free arc welder which I have demonstrated how it performed in this video.
This stick welder I got is a Weld Master brand and with a capacity of 140 amps, I really can’t believe what it can do for a really old welder. However, this unit still needs a bit of an enhancement, especially with its cables which are quite thin as compared to its 140 amp output. So in this case I might go for an arc welder refurbishment to exploit its full capacity.
A stick welder can sometimes be more reliable than a MIG welder because you can weld outdoors with it and arc welding electrodes are very cheap to buy. Stick electrodes are also readily available and you can choose which type based on the type of metals you want to weld with.
I find various types of dumped welders in my skips that I can use for my DIY home projects. Mostly, the welders I find are MIG welders, most are quite modern and are burnt out . But this old welder needs an arc welder refurbishment, I think I will keep it and extend its working days with me.
So before you think of replacing your old welder, especially a stick welder, try to give it to someone else who may need it.
Pete: you just can’t beat an old transformer welder for general farm welding. The metal doesn’t have to be clean, the wind and rain can be blasting away, the welding machine can be d
True
Pete: transformer welders are nearly indestructible, they don’t mind getting wet, they aren’t that fussy about accurate frequency or voltage fluxulations, there is a large variety of specialty rods available, and they are harder to steal because they are so damned heavy.
I prefer a 250 amp AC/DC transformer welder for the thicker metal, I have reserve the MIG for mufflers and such. The AC/DC transformer welder is OK for aluminum TIG scratch start (irrigation pipes).
Keep up the great videos.
yea I like indestructible
Hahaha I got gifted a very similar but bigger welder and had to watch your video to see what that wheel was even for as it had no voltage dial. Thanks Pete!
Very cool!
A free old buzz box welder is probably better built than others today are and it's still burning rod's pete great find
Yea mate FREE IS GOOD .LOL
Can't beat free ninety nine!!
Yep
Looks like a fine welder. I have some older equipment too.

LOL- OLD???
hell I remember when those little Weldmasters were brand new...
I grew up with the old Transarcs- about the same capacity, but four times the size...
And yeah- short of the winding handle rusting up solid- they literally will run forever (Weldmaster or Transarc- all those early ones were the same- the winding handle meshed a transformer in and out to vary the current- there really wasn't much that could go wrong LOL
(hint- if/WHEN the winder did rust solid- you could use an extension cord to vary the welding current by having a longer lead/ winding it up in a circle- yeah it overheated the cord, but it DID work as a current control LOL)
Hi Steve , LOL great idea ,Thanks my friend
👍🇧🇷
