My professor had just happened to start filming right before so we were lucky to get it on video. I did reach out to a luthier friend to see if it was okay to string back up. No cracks thank goodness, and I did check with a piece of card stock to see if the sound post had shifted. Was all good except for some cosmetic damage-the metal fine tuner did unfortunately bounce a couple of times on the belly as well as the bridge. I’m due for a fingerboard planing so I will be taking it for some TLC and closer inspection. Violin maintenance is really important to me-I love your videos Olaf!! It’s so nice to see informed discussion about repairs and these kind of things. I used to work in a violin shop. I didn’t do restorations, but I sat across from the skilled luthier that did. It’s so good to see the same principles and discipline to do things the right way.

Once, about 15 years ago, in a community orchestra concert, the section leader of the 2nd violins had her bridge snap out in the middle of the last movement of some Mozart. She simply sat calmly and quietly till the piece was finished. I think someone in the percussion section found it for her. She put it back in - soundpost was still in place - and the concert continued. I had not know before that that such a thing could happen.

Thank you for the explanation, Olaf! That would be a very startling thing to have happen while playing. I'm glad the instruments I play (clarinet and sax) aren't under any kind of tension. If something breaks on them, it just comes loose or falls off.
We were playing at an open Mic night just before the lockdown. The band that followed us had a fiddle player I don't know how it happened but he's started playing and suddenly the bridge shot off, the table split with a very loud bang and the sound post came through the table. Then He told me that he never released the tension on the strings because he was scared of the soundpost falling over as it had done so many times. I repaired the damage to the instrument and when it came to refitting the sound post I found it was about a 1/2mm too short. Bloody Chinese violin.
The way you explained how it didn't actually explode and there wasn't fire made me feel like you said that could actually happen... Do you have something to tell us? 😂
Professional guitarist usually have many guitar in his possesion. He could bring 2 for a gig and change them between song or if accident happens. Do violinist also have multiple violins? Or do they tend to stay with the one most comfortable for them?
Olaf, I want you to know your videos have taught me real life skills, even as someone who has never held a violin. I got a brand new guitar last month. In the past I’ve only had pre-owned instruments but I got a special guitar, hot off the press. Of course I managed to scratch the wood last week and I felt devastated! I immediately googled “luthier near me.” And then I remembered your video and googled “guitar luthier near me.” 😉 Unfortunately the guitar makers are kind of far away from me but I discovered there’s a violin maker I’ve driven past every day on my way to work! I wish I could go in and look but they don’t have an open shop, just workshop by appointment. I’m not sure if I’ll go ahead trying to get my guitar repaired, it’s just cosmetic and I’m not made out of money unfortunately. Still amazed that there’s luthiers near me at all! So cool

Crazy glue the bridge on! Not really! Don't pizzicato....when strings are hot from playing a fast passage! LOL! Heat from strings, ignited the off gassed varnish. Ps...you dont have that issue playing an alto horn. I never had a valve cap blow off......but...I did have a violin tailpiece explode!

I think he gave the bridge a forward tug, either with the finger nail or the up pulled string close to the bridge creating a push on the back side, his fingers are very close. With slippery string it doesn't take much of a tension reduction to be able to move the bridge angle. Someone with this guys experience should know where the sound post is when looking through the F hole, probably don't want string tension without a sound post but much movement without a bridge and some tension probably will knock the post over.
I’ve had about half of my bow hair come off at the same time, it was an old violin belonging to my school and my teacher said to put more pressure on my bow... turned out the bow hadn’t been touched in years so idk what was wrong with it xD
Hello, Olaf! I have a question about violin brands, if you don't mind. I am a beginner (1 year) and have an Allegro "Gewa" violin (German brand). I purchased it used and it had a label inside and everything. It is not that old and following your video "Inside a 100 dollar violin" I deduced there was sprucing and the scoop and all the signs of a good violin present that you mentioned, but I wondered what your thoughts were on modern violin brands such as Gewa. My violin rarely ever needs tuning. My teacher is surprised at how well she keeps her tune. EDIT: I bought it from a violin shop/ luthier in Sweden, used, even though it was originally made in Germany. I picked it out of 5 different ones I asked the luthier to play for me, so it was the sound I liked, and paid roughly 400 euros for it (if that helps).

Explosion 💥 I think it’s more like implosion. The man who taught me instrument making, joked about good musical instruments being on the verge of implosion. Hahahahaha BANG and we have some soiled undies. Hahahahaha
I've had one of those fake boxwood tailpiece split releasing the tail loop. So the tailpiece, bridge, and strings went flying. That was very loud and startling too. I won't use those tailpieces anymore. Maybe a real boxwood one. But not the fake boxwood. They are not strong enough.
I remember a few years ago, watching a middle school orchestra concert (where I help the kids tune the strings prior to the concert, plus sit with the kids, if for no other reason than to keep them in line during the performance). I think it was during the 7th-grade portion where one of the cellists was playing, and the glue joint went out where the neck meets the body. It happened just as the conductor/teacher raised her arms to begin the song. It was a much louder noise than this guy's bridge flying out of his instrument! And I confess that it was hilarious! Fortunately, that young man took it all in stride and smiled himself. Never seen anything like that before or since.

There is a legend of a double bass that broke a tail gut sending the tail piece into the players head killing.

You don't need to take a scratched guitar to a violin luthier, lol. I would suggest looking up any guitar repair shop in your area.

The button of my violin got out of the whole once, it made the same sound. The bridge and the sound post got put of place, it was terrifying.

my guess was that their finger hit the bridge and knocked it out of perpendicularity and then it just collapsed under string tension

Playing the violin can be dangerous. The player should wear safety glasses (I do). That E string can take out an eye in milliseconds.
