As a bowmaker, I compliment all of you. It's especially nice to see someone who does _not_ flame the hairs after finishing, to shorten up the loose ones. If a bow is rehaired properly, there will be no loose hairs, and flaming shortens their life. But there are at least a couple of videos on RUclips showing this.

Olaf has his own channel, you should check it. 😊
      ruclips.net/user/AskOlaftheViolinmaker
And if you want to see the other videos they made together, you can check the playlist "TwoSet Violin and Olaf" on my channel : ruclips.net/p/PLRNavMkwfqm14JydPP1lF_i7SUZZ5yAvL
(By the way, the pandemic isn't what prevents them from shooting videos together. The thing is that Brett and Eddy live in Singapore now, which is quite far from Olaf's workshop in Brisbane...😄)

It's crazy that Eddy is literally afraid of a lighter. He is so amazing at playing the instrument but just as clumsy at making it. The magic of specialization.

1:50 About the question why the frog is called "the frog": In the past, the bow was tightened with a little piece of wood, which had to be put in manually and kept in place with the thumb. However, it often happened that this little piece of wood just "jumped" out of its place, because of its loose / "shaky" position (and the tension, I suppose). People then compared that with a frog jumping off.
Another (more modern) explanation is, that the shape of the (bow) frog resembles a sitting (natural) frog.

I had no idea just how complicated and precise the hairing of the bow is, and how even the tiniest detail affects the sound. No wonder a professional bow costs a lot of money. Thanks so much for sharing this, I really enjoyed it!

I love to see artisans making things by hand the way their fathers and grandfathers taught them. I think this is one of the reasons that instruments like a Strad violin have stood the test of time. They weren't made on an assembly line in Bangladesh for 29.99; people took time and care to make and stain them by hand, and still use real horse on the bows instead of plastic strings.
