I am now training as a luthier, and it is all thanks to your channel that I discovered the single greatest love of my life: the violin. Thank you guys so much, you have changed my life.
That is so cool! Off course RUclips can have huge influences on the choice of what you want to learn or even create a dream job from it. Mind boggling why I never thought of that, as I only here people say they want to become influencers. 🤔
@@Barde_Jaune Not really. The only reasons I've used a lighter before are because I've worked with macrame, and because my house has a proper fireplace. I don't think there are a lot of situations where you'd need to use a lighter, and those lighters aren't the only type of lighter- you get the ones where you push a switch, the ones where you only press down and don't need to flick as well, etc.
As a bowmaker, I compliment all of you. It's especially nice to see someone who does _not_ flame the hairs after finishing, to shorten up the loose ones. If a bow is rehaired properly, there will be no loose hairs, and flaming shortens their life. But there are at least a couple of videos on RUclips showing this. These two classical music geniuses make me feel so inferior, like I miss out on so much life not knowing what they do. That is, until I see that Eddy doesn't know how to light a lighter.
I literally just yesterday opened my cello case to find that almost all of my bow hair had somehow been ripped off, so this was the perfect video for me to see. Obviously I'm not gonna try it myself, but it was weirdly comforting.
I love that Eddy has never handled a lighter before. XD (To be fair, as a nonsmoker, I only ever use mine for crafting and the occasional candle, sooo...)
Today since our school has student teachers today was her last day. Our real teacher was not here she decided to let us watch your channel. 1:50 About the question why the frog is called "the frog": In the past, the bow was tightened with a little piece of wood, which had to be put in manually and kept in place with the thumb. However, it often happened that this little piece of wood just "jumped" out of its place, because of its loose / "shaky" position (and the tension, I suppose). People then compared that with a frog jumping off. Another (more modern) explanation is, that the shape of the (bow) frog resembles a sitting (natural) frog.
I had no idea just how complicated and precise the hairing of the bow is, and how even the tiniest detail affects the sound. No wonder a professional bow costs a lot of money. Thanks so much for sharing this, I really enjoyed it!

I love to see artisans making things by hand the way their fathers and grandfathers taught them. I think this is one of the reasons that instruments like a Strad violin have stood the test of time. They weren't made on an assembly line in Bangladesh for 29.99; people took time and care to make and stain them by hand, and still use real horse on the bows instead of plastic strings.
