- I recently got a Sony CX900 camcorder and Magnus VT-4000 fluid head tripod. On Memorial Day earlier this week, I decided to railfan with my awesome new setup for the first time. I spent most of the day at Amsterdam, NY.

After many hours at the platform, lots of fast trains, and many cool catches, I decided to head to the crossing at Evelyn Street a bit down the line for one last Amtrak train.
Train 14: Amtrak Empire Service - 5/25/15
- Amtrak P32ACDM #715
But, as I was packing up the tripod, the gates came down again and took me by surprise. I only had time to do a handheld shot, which turned out somewhat decent.

After that, it was time to head home, with a brief stop in Breakneck Ridge, NY. Check out that video here:
• Metro-North Train 8851...
The quality of this new camera is amazing and I hope to upload lots of new videos featuring it soon! Sorry for any overexposed/underexposed shots, I'm still learning to use this thing. Авто/Мото
Great catch on CP 8869. RIP the last CP olympic unit. It derailed and was repainted.

Very Nice Shots! I also live in NYC and railfan around there. Very nice catches! I loved Amsterdam when I went!
I cannot believe no railroad company is put any cameras up in the area it's amazing I've been telling several different ones put up a camera in Amsterdam nobody wants to listen

Awesome video!!!
Looks like a great location for watching!
Its so backlit in amsterdam though
This video is awesome!!!!!!
Thanks!
Just by watching the video it looks like those tracks are in need of some help. Nice video indeed.
All the other trains looked to be running smooth and steady, but that long hood forward old GP-40 with those gondolas was bouncing around like a basketball. Worn out suspension maybe?
r.i.p for Amtrak 102 I gonna miss that locomotive
I forgot the K5lA on CSX GP40-2 Whoops sorry
VERY Nice video ... For me K5LA Heaven ...
Super job I wish I could come some time
great video and very good trains , Greetings
OSCAR ZUÑIGA Thank you!
102 before it got in the derailment?
I'm thinking of coming to this location in the near future. What is the train crew frequencies for this line? Awesome catches by the way!
***** I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to scanners but I think it's 160.800 for the area. I just used my phone to stream a radio feed from online. And yeah this place always has cool stuff come by, you should definately go.
2:09 A Farewell To Amtrak P42 102 Which Was Destroy In October 2015 Amtrak Southbound Vermonter Derailment South Of Northfleld VT www.railpictures.net/photo/549888/ Awesome Video!!!
How do you like the Magnus tripod? I'm thinking of getting it
It's decent. I've had a lot of trouble panning and tilting at the same time, as the "fluid head" is not that smooth, but if you use it carefully you'll get good shots. I would recommend a low-end Manfrotto tripod over the Magnus, but I've met others who love the VT-4000.
I'm mainly looking for something that keeps the camera as close to completely still as possible as the train goes by and inevitably sakes the ground. Does that VT-4000 accomplish that and keep the camera still? I don't do much panning in my videos so that's not a main concern of mine
So since you aren't doing a lot of camera motion, you probably don't need to spend the extra on a fluid head tripod, unless you want to have the option available to pan or tilt. The VT-4000 does do a great job keeping the camera steady, but any heavy tripod with retractable ground spikes like the Magnus will do a good job as well.
okay thank you!
It was amtrak 63 the maple leaf, not 69
6000csx I thought the Adirondack was the one with the Amfleet IIs?
@@amtrak706 Nope, Sorry. The Adirondack is a New York Penn - Montreal train that goes up the CP/D&H diverging at Schenectady. I'm pretty sure it has never been routed through Amsterdam, even as a detour. Both the Adirondack and the Maple Leaf are considered "Long Distance" trains, so that's probably why they get Amfleet IIs for equipment. Great video, by the way.
This is a mainline track? Look pretty sorry if they are. Not to mention those nasty looking Amtrak cars at 2:00. Is it any wonder that only one person was waiting to ride. It was probably his last choice!
Wow, you're really bad at trolling. At 2:00 there are no Amtrak cars going by. The train approaching consists of shiny stainless steel cars. The tracks are Class 5 and look it. Some life you must have, trolling railfans.
