📌 Callaloo is the national dish of Trinidad and Tobago! 🇹🇹 In Trinidad and Tobago, the term "callaloo" refers to a dish made from the young leaves of the dasheen plant, cooked down in coconut milk, okra, and seasonings. Interestingly, the Jamaican callaloo, which is amaranth, is known as Chorai Bhagi. 🌿 Both versions are packed with nutrients and loved for their rich, earthy flavor!
How did RUclips know I just made callaloo last night? I swear they're watching us! In any case, great video and very thorough. My dad grows callaloo in his summer garden, cleans it, chops it, and gives it out to our family members (we are in Maryland). We freeze the uncooked callaloo in portions, and take out to cook when we want it.
He's a good cook... Jamaican Chef. I cook the same way too! I'm old school. Mi grow up with mi granny inna di cuntry for som time, wen mi madda was off to work in Town.
I was searching for this exact video 3 days ago when I was making Callaloo and saltfish. Glad to see you put one out as your videos have become the best guide to any JA cooking on RUclips imo. I guess this means I’m having callaloo next week too 😂
Grow up eating callaloo and boc choy when I lived Jamaica. The other one we use to eat it when we visit country. Who remember rundown. Thanks to my dad’s botanical experience working at hope botanical garden. I don’t eat any animals so this is one of my favourite plant to eat. ❤yum
Hi. I'm enjoying your videos. Lots of great info about authentic Jamaican cooking. I'm planning to try out several of these dishes and make the browning and green sauce.
Good morning, Nick . Thank you for another interesting and educational vlog. Calaloo is one of my favourite vegetables 😋. The way you've prepared it would be nice with anything 😋 delicious. I would stuff some of that deliciousness in my fish, wrap it up in parchment paper, then wrap that up in foil, then bake that in the oven for about 20 min. Mmmm, nice 👌🏾 👍🏾. Blessings and more blessings to you and your family🙏🏾✨️. One love 💙 ❤️ 🇯🇲 💯 💐💐
@feedandteach you're more than welcome. Yeah, that would be nice. The cooking time might vary depending on the size and quality fish. I use a fish called sea bass in the UK. Texture would be like a yellow tail snapper. 😊👍🏾
@@feedandteach In Trinidad one is Spinach leaves the huge leaves are dasheen bush which we make Callaloo with ,,, the callaloo is the dish you make with the leaves,,,,,,, Please you mix up the terms .......CALLALOO IS THE DISH MADE FROM THOSE TWO PLANT LEAVES
It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Wow, this meal looks lovely. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey.😊🙏
Very enticing. Sadly, where I reside. Only one Callaloo plant grew. Upon the allotment. Due to the adverse weather conditions. Rationing, has therefore become the only way to add it to my required dishes!
Callaloo is a Jamaican Patois word for the caribbean Amaranth that's derived from the African word Kalulu. This word was adopted by other Caribbean countries to call a dish callaloo.
@NativeNomad10 calulu is an African dish brought to the Caribbean by African slaves. In the 17th century the French changed the spelling to Callalou. Then spelling of this word had been changed several times as time went by.
@chrishamilton1117 the word is Kalulu, not calulu which isnt the dish in the caribbean, and Jamaican callaloo wasn't brought by Africans, its a plant native to the Americas. While other Caribbean call a dish callaloo, Jamaican callaloo is a plant. Also, the french couldn't have changed the spelling to callaloo when Jamaica doesnt have French influence and the first appearance of this spelling was in Jamaican patois language. Regardless of what the origin story might be, one thing is for sure is that its complicated and varies throughout the caribbean.
Every video better than the one before…learning a lot. Nuff respect Nick ⚡️& keep up the good work.

In Trinidad, callaloo is a dish, while in Jamaica, it's a plant.

How do you make the cabbage with the vinegar. Can you please share
I do the same thing with parsley which stays fresh for a month.
😋 😋 👍🏽 ❤
So I don’t have to remove the plastic like string string thing 😭😭😭 cause I hate doing that 😂😂😂
The Trinidad and Tobago callaloo dish can also be made with Jamaican callaloo bush
Its Jamaican callaloo, not callaloo bush.
I cut, sort, clean and then zip lock and wrap them in brown paper bags and freeze them. They last for months.
ONE IS SPINACH ONE IS ACTUALLY CALLALOO BUSH FROM THE DASHEEN PLANT
there is something wrong with the sound volume...the music is clear, but your voice is very distant... but otherwise, excellent and informative video!
Thanks for the feedback! I'm working on fine tuning the audio
Calaloo is an African word for leafy green vegetable, just like the word spinach. That's why the word is used in different Caribbean countries.

Dry thyme is a scam lol 😂
Wah happen, young people nuh strip callaloo
I dont think dasheen is calaloo,
ln Trinidad and Tobago it is. Jamaican callaloo bush is called spinach or bhagee in T&T
My wife loves it in anything, every time. My family and I grow it. So, we don't buy it... period!
My dad usually just cook the calaloo with salt & a lot of freshly crushed garlic - very nice!?
