Hi there! I saw your video for the first time. I subscribed because I really enjoyed it. I also am growing orchids and I’m new to Tolumnia. I live in Salado, it’s always nice to see Texans growing orchids.
One of my jairaks as well is a major climber, similar to a species. I like your channel and subscribed. Just found ya Nice video. And nice pots/technique I noticed mine are adapting the best in ceramic/terracotta compared to plastic. However. I believe I am going to mount one in cholla as I did get some specifically for a tolumnia. I was wondering. Have you ever had or seen or dealt with a Tolumnia calochilum or calochila. I am absolutely so interested in this species and missed my chance to order one that was available. But one day I will! So just looking to figure it out more and more
Thank you for watching and subscribing! I’ve only had the species bahamensis. I managed to keep it healthy with new growth and new roots for about 3 years, although it never bloomed. I think one, drier winter indoors under grow lights did it in. Will try again someday when I happen across another species.
Thanks Dana for sharing your Tolumnias with us. I now need to take a close look at my remaining two out of about a dozen that I started with and see if I even have any live roots on them. It’s so difficult to see which roots are still alive and I don’t want to pull them out of their pots, they are so fragile, as you know. Thanks again.
Yes, in some cases challenging to grow, but they are still one of my favorite orchids! They don’t do well for me mounted, but do unbelievably well in the heat. Later today, I’ll share a community post on that. As always, thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
Thanks for watching! During the growing season, I fertilize at 360-370 ppm once per week, and I mist daily. They can take the intense heat here, but only get direct sun for a few hours early in the morning. Yes, I’m finding that Tolumnia mounts fail after a year or two, which is why I’ve switched to containers.
Wow they look so good!! Want mine to produce more fans, growing slow, first time bloomed in January 2023, since then growing only one new fan, looks almost the same as last year. Love your growth. I only fertilize once a week.
No…the roots haven’t attached to the pot (it’s slick and glazed on the inside) and the bark pieces are large and come out easily if turned upside down.
These pots are very cute, but the wider bottom and narrow opening are an absolute no-go for me. When the new roots grow and attach to the bark, it will all become a solid ball that won't come out of the pot anymore when the time comes to repot. I'd hate to have to smash these pots.
@@TheOrchidHut I know their roots, I grow several myself :). So I also have experiance with how easily they get damaged and how the whole root just dies afterwards... I have no doubt the bark ball can be forced out, but I am worried that doing so will cause a lot of damage as it deforms to squeeze through. And while Tolumnias are resilient and I fully trust them to recover from such damage, setback is not fun for us growers.
They are called Gideon pots. The online link where you *might* still find them is in the description section of this older video: ruclips.net/video/2qoakVXFr1I/видео.html
Thanks for sharing them with us. The pots are just adorable.
Thanks for watching! Happy orchid growing!

Nice repot video Dana. At what ppm do u fertilize Tolumnias? Tolumnias never did well for me when mounted.

Hi Dana, can you tell me where you purchased the little white pots. They seem to like that set up. Please let me know.
I bought them locally, but at one time you could find them at www.chive.com. They are called Gideon pots.
Where did you get the little white orchid pots? They are adorable. Thanks
Thanks for watching…I see you found the link for the pots. I hope they still make them!
@@TheOrchidHut actually they don’t but I did find them on eBay and Etsy!
@kaseyinthe305 good to know!!

How do you keep them - pot, mounted? I also fertilize once a week, but mist every morning.
@@TheOrchidHut it’s in a small pot with holes, indoors under LED lights.
are they not hard to remove from the white pots when needing repotting

Some orchids, yes. But Tolumnias have very fine, flexible root systems that will come right out with the large bark pieces.

Where can I purchase the white ceramic pots?
Check the video description for details…. I bought mine locally, but I think the website is chive.com (if they are still available).
Where can I find the wood pieces?
Not sure where you are but search for cholla wood. Also sold in places that have reptile habitat supplies.
@@TheOrchidHut got some on Amazon and then also found it locally. I have tolumnia subjects en route!:)
Cute pots😍 name of them? Purchased?
