Peter Knowles was my idol as a kid, and I was devastated when he retired. Over half a century later, I still don't understand it. Like him I am a person of faith, but I believe that if God gives you a talent you should use it to bring happiness to others in this pain-filled world. I respect his reasons for quitting, but I don't find them convincing. Any player could break another player's leg. Bobby Tambling also became a Jehovah's Witness, but he carried on playing and bringing pleasure to people. In the end I think of the joy that Knowles could also have brought..
Yes I agree ..he could have let his light shine from within the game that would have been a witness for sure..Don't agree that breaking someones leg is a good reason though accidents happen is he not going to drive a car anymore?

Great video. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has heard of his more illustrious brother, Cyril, but not Peter. But to stand by his convictions and find religion, at the expense of a glamorous and financially rewarding career, is actually refreshing. His love for his family is a beautiful thing. And of course his dedication to his religion is paramount to him. What a nice man.
Cyril went on to win full international caps for England but Peter was always in the headlines. Saw him play in 1967 and 68, I would compare him to Jack Grealish, skilful, controversial and scored his fair share of goals

I remember watching a TV documentary about him in the early 1970s (perhaps some of the clips were from that). Perhaps Peter had a real love for God and respect for his fellowman unlike some who leave comments.
Problem with JW is they would rather their child died for want of a blood transfusion & there's been plenty a battle in court by health bodies to save that child. Maybe they've changed it now.
Well we had Stuart Elliott at Hull City . A major factor in him moving to us was the church he followed was in Hull and one of only 2 in the country .the other one was in Motherwell were we signed him from . I truly believed he played to celebrate and honour god ,it showed in his passion every time he got on the pitch. His passion reminded me of Eric Liddells character in the film chariots of fire. He walked the walk through football and beyond . Peter may have been better serving his faith within football instead. Either way we all have choices to make throughout life and he made his.
JW said that too of Jesus! All religions are the same, based on nothing but myth legend & shackles to make you feel guilty. What it's all about out there we still don't know. The Universe might be a spec of dust in the nothingness.
Such a brave decision by Peter Knowles. Once you know the truth, football has to take second place. I’m not certain why he couldn’t have served Jehovah, and still played football , but he made his decision, and as long as his heart is right he’ll never regret it. God bless him. 💙
Respect to him for making his life choices without fame and fortune influencing him. However, I do understand a bit more than most about how this can happen, because I had the grave misfortune to be raised as a JW from the age of 4. I finally walked away in 1973 as a terrified 16-year-old and was ordered out of the family home due to my unwillingness to participate. It's fair to say that my (now late) father was more extreme than most of them, but I knew others who also were treated that way. As far as football goes, I suppose it can be about personality, because Bobby Tambling had a successful football career while a JW, but his personality was possibly better suited to mixing the two - I understand why not everyone can.
Interesting to compare his career and life with that of George Best. Both players paths took totally different trajectories. One disappeared inside the bottle, the other inside his bible.
I seem to recall as a Manchester City supporter we had two brothers in the 1980s Darren and Jason Beckford, I forget which one think it might have been Darren he was called up to the England U21 and as a Jehovah Witness turned down the call up because it was against his faith...
I can't say i understand his decision but if it made him & his family happy long-term who the hell are we to stamp our own thoughts & beliefs onto this man. It definitely marks him out as unique even to this day but to call him brainwashed or crazy is again to expect "another" to believe what "we" believe. He wasn't a gambler or $ex pest just a man with a faith that I find hard to fathom but good luck to the man.
If there is such a thing as sin, surely the greatest must be to tell another human being that if they live their only life in a certain way, there will be a prize at the end for it.
Peter Knowles found something of far greater value than fortune and fame ... a good relationship with God and peace of mind. His older brother Cyril, stayed in football and sadly died at the age of 47. Following his retirement from football, Knowles has worked as a milkman, a window cleaner and a ware-houseman at Marks & Spencer's. Knowles has consistently stated that he never regretted giving up football.
I was at that Forest game his last and remember we run on the pitch at the end from the enclosure as you did in those days, he run straight down the tunnel. I can't remember how soon the news came out that he had walked away but people did not believe or understand at the time. I'm a lot older now and still following me babbies and I understand his decision. Fair play to him he will always be one of the greatest players to don the old gold and black shirt. Wolves ay we.
I remember him playing for the England U23 side. I doubt he would have played for England in the 1970 world cup but he would have played in the years following
I was only young back then and was amazed at his decision. He was probably as good as anyone around at the time. His brother Cyril played many years . I respect Peters decision but I feel he could have used his talent to spread his beliefs even though I personally don't agree with some of them

Not convinced of his reasoning to leave football. Talks of guilt if he breaks another players leg??? He could do that driving a car. Seems like he was indoctrinated by the Watchtower brigade. Not the most authentic Christian branch. Also, you can be a Christian and share your faith while doing an occupation you Love. Elvis Presley expressed his faith while performing. Knowles also said his mind was wrongly? on football between Wednesdays and Saturdays neglecting his family. Nonsense. There are ways around that issue. Did he get a Milkman's job after quitting. He'd be up and out much earlier than if a footballer. Would that be neglect of family also? So he gave up a good career with better financial Security than a milkman has. That sounds like Neglect of family in a financial sense. Caring for his family on LESS money. What if his child needed a blood transfusion? Jehovas Witnesses are against that. Neglect at its Worst. The main reason behind it, John, is to bring glory to Jehovah God, not to ourselves. Just look at how footballers (and other famous people) are idolised today (cough Taylor Swift cough). The idea is to worship the Creator, not the creation.

I'm curious why it wasn't and issue for Michael Jackson, George Benson Prince Serena and Venus Williams and all the other celebrities. What I did know when I was a witness was that you try and further your career and the elders have you in the back room. If you're a celebrity, crickets!! It's not rocket science to see why. I noticed in the newscast they mentioned the word cult with reference to the football fraternity. That's a bit of an oxymoron isn't it.

My understanding is that he believed the Jehovah’s Witness teaching at that time that the world would end in 1974. And he said he would return to football if that event did not take place…. Peter Knowles was my idol as a kid, and I was devastated when he retired. Over half a century later, I still don't understand it. Bobby Tambling also became a Jehovah's Witness, but he carried on playing and bringing pleasure to people. In the end I think of the joy that Knowles could also have brought..
I would leave because of idolatry. Fans r too much.

I am a S E Londoner and I, vividly ,recall the 1966/67 the Wolves promotion team with Wagstaff ,Knowles and Dougan where they drew 1/1 @ Millwall . They Lost 4/1 at Palace with 10,000 Wolves fans in a 41,000 crowd on the final day having secured promotion and in March won 3/1 @ Charlton when Knowles kicked the ball out of the ground at 3/1 ,in celebration, just like he did here...lol
