Monster hunter players have an advantage here actually. His tells for his moves are the same as the game. Though it is worth noting after he sets the world on fire his tells are the same as when he’s enraged which is scary because as any monster hunter veteran will tell you when the monster is pissed there is little room for error. General rule of rathalos and rathians. If they are looking at you move and watch the tail. They are one of the most iconic monsters in the whole series and most hunters are used to dodging them but that’s the only reason they don’t kill old players as often as other monsters. Because we’ve seen them countless times and there attack patterns and tells don’t change much between games. A new player is very likely to die to them. And every player of monster hunter gets hit by the tail attack sometimes. That’s why any hunter using a cutting weapon will try to cut off the tail as soon as they find the monster just about every time. Cause that attack is hard to avoid. Also when tails can be cut they give us carves so that’s on our to-do list for any monster with a tail.
I know you're explaining this for FF14 but I have to say that I'm loving this as a Monster Hunter player as well. It sounds like you're just explaining the Rathalos fight in MH. I mean I feel we could just put gameplay of Rathalos over your explanation of the fight from a MH game and you'd be explaining it just the same and it just makes me laugh as one who plays both games. Well... behemoth wasn’t that hard if our team mates know the basic rules. Such as near 500 armor def requirement, elemental defense, augmented weapon with regen capabilities, wide range skill, bring lots of immunizer, mega armorskin, mega demon drug. And always have lots of healing items, even if there’s a healer in your team. Other than that, always remember where’s the stone dropped, and try to put tornadoes near the walls.

(Due to a rule set by wyverians, hunts can only be performed by 4 hunters, as an army of more than 4 would defeat the purpose of teamwork and strategy.) In Monster Hunter, Rathalos will constantly charge at you, roar when aggressive, spew fire balls, poison you with swipes from his talons, and you can "cut off" his tail!. Also, the advice of "Don't get hit!" is excellent for anyone looking to get into Monster Hunter. I've been playing MH since TRI, and have had a blast since then! If you want satisfaction of bringing down ferocious beasts solo or with up to 3 friends, MH could be a game for you!

My farm group for this is almost always 3 warriors and 1 paladin, makes the phase 1 less stressful for potion use with the paladin healing (on occasion) and still have enough damage to end the fight in phase 2 during the 3rd down, even with a sloppy fight, everyone usually had 5+ potions per person. For phase 1 just pummel Rathalos while trying to keep on the bosses left foot/heel, and when adds pop the paladin picks up the coeurl and have 1 warrior peel with the paladin to murder the cat while the other 2 keep on the boss. During big add phase 1 warrior grabs the add and straight tanks it while the paladin mounts the boss and the other 2 warriors pop inner release to fel cleave the boss down in 10-15 seconds. Our motto for phase 2 was basically to just chase the tail constantly to keep dodging everything and everyone single soaks any fireballs and potions through. If someone seems to get into a bad situation a LB2 can almost always save day in preventing a death. I usually see the chest drop about 20% of the time, seen pets and songs multiple times but I have not seen the mount drop myself. Currently 30/50 towards my mount.
It might have been nice if they'd necessitated that the player track down the monster in the middle of the fight as it moves from area to area; like what happens in a monster hunter hunt. and does every fight in this game have to take place in a circular or square/rectangular arena? This seems like it would have been a great opportunity to introduce some unorthodox elements into the FF 14 formula (ala Doomgaze).
Some explaining why Rathalos works the way he does for people who don't play MH. ~MONSTER ROARS~ This is one of the few oddities in this fight. In MH, only specific monsters have roars that can actually hurt you (Tigrex is the prime example), and Rathalos isn't one of them. Unless it's a very small monster with a weak, insignificant roar though, a roar will always stun you if you're close enough (this is a special stun that consists of a unique animation of the hunter suddenly grabbing their head to plug their ears with their hands and then slowly returning to the idle position). ~GETTING 'RANDOMLY' STUNNED BY ATTACKS~ In MH, getting stunned is a result if you getting "combo'd". As in, you took too many attacks in a row without breaking it up with a proper retaliation. I'm not sure of the exact specifics but it seems that when you take a hit from a monster it also builds up an invisible "stun gauge", and attacking the monster also lowers this gauge. When the gauge is full you get stunned. Unlike here in FFXIV, you can get stunned by fireballs in MH. Every hit counts. ~GETTING KNOCKED BACK BY ATTACKS~ This is one of the biggest things in Monster Hunter and the primary reason why dodging is so important, just about every single attack a monster can throw at you will send you FLYING like a ragdoll, so it truly behooves you to learn the telegraphs for every attack so you can determine how best to avoid it through positioning, movement, or use of your shield if you have one. ~THE UNAVOIDABLE FIREBALL~ It's weird that you can't avoid that. I mean, I get that he's aiming at you, but I'd think you'd be provided with some I-frames for whatever your dodge move is so you could avoid it by dodging just as the fireball is about to hit. Does that really not work?
As a heads up. The "point blank" fire breath does not target a close player. I have been hit by this attack half way across the arena because I WAS the target of the attack and also assumed it would only hit close to him. Rathalos was close to one edge while I was close to the other side of the arena, still targeted me with that "point blank" attack. Now the "point blank" fire blast is 100% done when Rathalos makes a sharp turn to a player and does no animation of any kind. That is the "tell" for rathalos. For some reason the blast is easier to dodge running side to side instead of back and forth.
Me happy is the Ff14 ambassador I’ve been following him since my HW days and his guides have always been top tier. Like my thousand reign X fight would have been hell if I didn’t have mr happy on my iPad telling me what to do lol
@@JackgarPrime I think Rathian is easier to kill with a Hammer or Hunting Horn, but the same weapons against Rathalos is suicide. At least when trying to use them how they're supposed to: smacking their heads. Maybe it's just me who never found a strategy to use them, even though HH is my second most used weapon. By the way, I'm referring to Gens 3 and 4 only. I usually have 0 strategies in the other games other than "Keep hitting and using potions till it's dead" mwhaha!
I kinda expected a tag-team with Rathian when Rathalos hits his airborne phase. (For those who are unfamiliar, Rathians are Rathalos' mates, and both will rush to defend their mate if they're injured. Rathians fight more often on the ground, can rapidly shoot fireballs, and unlike their mates, have poisoned tails instead of talons.)
My friends forced me to go scholar on this fight since I was the only one who had a 70 healer and after we finally got our first clear after about 2 hours or so, everything else has been smooth sailing since. We got 6 clears our first night (last night), so we’re on track to getting the mount!!!
As a SAM, during the first phase I like to stand slightly in his hit box, right by his foot. Any time he looks at me, I just run through him to the other side. I found standing outside his hitbox didn't give me enough time to dodge, and being too far in his hit box was getting me hit by his charge. My team does 1 heal, 2 dps, 1 tank and after a few trial and error runs we can down it no problem. The three tank strat is nice for pf groups, though.
Hi - I dont usually comment. First I want to say this is a really nice guide as always. However there are a few things you missed or not quiet right (this is just my opinion/perspective that I hope can help others - happy to be corrected) The first thing if you have a classic party setup is he seems to always attack the tank first after the roar (well he did for my 50+ runs). After that business as usual. He doesn't always do 360° tail swing (sometime just does 180° - not sure why, but it is usually 360° though). You didn't mention whoever is on Rathalos has a bleed on them (granted its minor but still worth noting). DPS can LB the tail if you are on 1 bar as you gain a full bar when you destroy it. I actually feel running from Rathalos after the 3rd stack up is bad. Easy for mistakes to happen. Instead (especially in melee range) everyone should stay stacked and immediately flank around him together. Easy to bait him and be behind him when he attacks. Another thing is deaths aren't the end of the world as it really boosts you LB bar (again good if you have dps). Hope that helps. Look forward to more of you great work.
I'm aware, but my issue is now I left when I was progressing O3S, so I'm sitting at a cool 320 ilvl, I have my work cut out first finding out what all I missed and farming gear.
Is there a specific amount of damage the FireBall will do if you don't stack ? Every farming party I join don't want to stack so I get one-shot and it's frustrating
So uh...be honest. How are my chances for finding people to do this with? I'm a new player who is a massive Monster Hunter fan and I need this mount. xD
the bard lb cheese wasn't in this guide lol (bard/machinist can lb1 both the head and tail on first down and then lb2 it on second down for an insanely quick fight)
For Monster Hunter players, just don't expect him to play out like he did in his original game. It's still more of a FFXIV battle with new mechanics that will punish you for thinking otherwise. Movement is a lot limited in this game in comparison and the arena is a smaller too, so it's easier to get hit by attacks. I never complete this Extreme fight, but I will say it's like fighting him in his nest and he hits like 3/4 of max health for most his attacks when playing non-tank roles. In grand scheme of MH, Rathalos is actually fairly average boss and he is nowhere as strong as Behemoth. In this game, they make him stronger, but to be honest it's really more out of pity since there wasn't much that came out of Rathalos to begin with. The worst thing he can do you in MH, which they brought it over to this game, is that he drives you to a corner and wombo combo you with attacks and poison. If anything, it feels more annoying than challenging. Other than that, I enjoy fighting him, and I would say it was the better one of the two, not the Behemoth event which I think Monster Hunter did it better on their part, but it was certainly better than Pagos.
to be honest i think they should have chosen an elder dragon, the elder dragons have a much more fantasy feel to them and most have very recognizable look difference between phases or powerful attacks on a timer, so i thought they'd do that but them just using rathalos was a bit of a let down, i mean I GET IT its RATHALOS like I GET IT. But damn let some other monsters shine
Also is very important to LB Rathalos while it's down, otherwise it's going to be a lot harder to kill!!! Pretty cool fight but it's difficult to find random people who know how to dodge the attacks (I play with advantage as I'm a Monster Hunter player and I know Rathalos movements pretty well) If you play in Zodiark as DPS or healer find me to play this!! Patty Jab on game :)
The description of the video is pretty much the only thing people need to know...and it's really sad how many have a problem with that. I never want to go into this as a WHM ever again. EVER. Like...stop standing in the tail swipe, please! I also notice you are using one of the ideal groups (3 tanks, 1 healer; the other being 2 tanks, 1 dps, 1 healer). Time to start getting the ilvl of my PLD up, I suppose...
So from someone who just plays monster hunter world, from 1 to 10 how hard is the fight? Because behemoth Extreme is the most difficult fight in world, hell in monster hunter in general.
I know it's been 5months but as an FFXIV player who bought MHW thanks to this cross-over, will throw in my 2cents (TLDR at the bottom). Rathalos' difficulty is somewhat variable and can't really be 1-10 graded due to the MHW factors as well as the player themselves. For a start, the encounter ends entirely if your team faint too many times (just like MHW missions can). As such, you could have that one person who 'faints' too much and ends the run prematurely. Whether it's connectivity, poor reaction times or any other factors, 80% of the fight will depend on whether people avoid his attacks or not, because just like MHW, being stunned by a monster and then hit with a devastating attack afterwards can often spell doom, and that combo is what will get most people. As such, a team who can avoid him and know the mechanics won't have much trouble. Because there is no enmity, players absolutely have to be keeping an eye on him at all times, so those with lower resolutions or just poor positioning and/or camera placement can suffer during chaotic moments if their attention is elsewhere or they react slowly (just like MHW). Having said that, even as a 2560x1440 PC player with a compact UI who plays a Healer, there have been times where I too got wrapped up in the moment and notice an attack just a fraction too late, but for the most part it's not overly difficult to avoid when you're paying attention and mindful of what he can do... Just like MHW. So again, difficulty is somewhat variable. An experienced FFXIV player who is used to extreme content will tell you it's actually very easy (which it is, in principle) seeing as the non-'get out of the way' mechanics like his fire-breath isn't overly difficult to manage and typically won't be fatal. At the same time, even an experienced group can have a string of unlucky KO's. During my last Rathalos scale-farm in Extreme, we had an unfortunate faint with Rathalos on 1% which ended the run right there. Having said that, I thoroughly believe that the difficulty of the fight is perfect in the context of the reward. Players can farm Rathalos for scales to gain a 5 piece armour set, extreme-scales to upgrade those set into dyable versions, 50 scales for a Rathalos as a mount, poogie pet, MHW music, and other bits and pieces. As such, the fight really shouldn't be overly difficult for such a reward, yet it's hard enough to keep casuals tested and keep veterans on their toes for that one string of bad luck that could end it all. Because this fight is unlike anything else in FFXIV (except one single level 50 boss that also doesn't have enmity), and because it has its own reward table, it wouldn't be fair to call it too easy or too hard. I believe the difficulty is 100% perfect the way it is for the respective reward/grind - a nice challenge but not something that is going to give you too many headaches... Unlike Behemoth in MHW (I hear). Most importantly, Rathalos is a FUN fight. Above mentioned enmity-less level 50 boss was one of my favourites because of it. Rathalos is the same but dialled up to 11 - and now that I actually play MHW and could compare them, it's great to say that FFXIV successfully replicated that feeling in MHW where you are ducking and diving to avoid the boss as much as possible, or running away to chug a cheeky potion when desperate. You can mount him, break his tale, enjoy a monster-clash, stun him - and all the things you can do in MHW (albeit FFXIV has to 'script' those things). TLDR -- enjoyable fight with the right amount of difficulty for what you are trying to achieve from it. I'd give it a perfect 5/10 in the context of risk/reward.

okay for all the healers out there, what do i NOT need for this fight, so i can slot Esuna? i don't normally take it, as it is pretty much useless except for certain fights in this expansion. Right now i have on my AST: Protect, Largesse, Cleric Stance, Swiftcast, and Lucid Dreaming. I feel like Protect is pretty needed as it reduces the damage taken, but could easily be macro'd off to slot in Esuna after using it, but I'm a little shaky on this in case someone should die (worst case scenario) Another skill I can see possibly removing would be Swiftcast as you won't likely be raising people due to the fact that they can respawn without weakness. If anyone has some thoughts on this or anything that works for you, please let me know. Thanks ;)
I don't think Largesse is really needed since you can only heal the first phase, and as long as you're on top of it and he doesn't roar right before Garula attacks, it's pretty easy.
I really don't like it when groups emphasize the 3 tank 1 healer meta... Means all DPS are left to bite the dust. I've cleared it 20+ times as a DPS, it's not that difficult.
Too bad the damage on the Rathalos isn't MH font. Whenever the Behemoth in MHW is damaged the font is from FFXIV. A missed opportunity to a cool easter egg.

Unless it's a very small monster with a weak, insignificant roar though, a roar will always stun you if you're close enough (this is a special stun that consists of a unique animation of the hunter suddenly grabbing their head to plug their ears with their hands and then slowly returning to the idle position).
~GETTING 'RANDOMLY' STUNNED BY ATTACKS~
In MH, getting stunned is a result if you getting "combo'd".
~GETTING KNOCKED BACK BY ATTACKS~
This is one of the biggest things in Monster Hunter and the primary reason why dodging is so important, just about every single attack a monster can throw at you will send you FLYING like a ragdoll, so it truly behooves you to learn the telegraphs for every attack so you can determine how best to avoid it through positioning, movement, or use of your shield if you have one.
~THE UNAVOIDABLE FIREBALL~
It's weird that you can't avoid that. I mean, I get that he's aiming at you, but I'd think you'd be provided with some I-frames for whatever your dodge move is so you could avoid it by dodging just as the fireball is about to hit. Does that really not work?
Thanks for this. Just finished my SCH relic in Pagos today now looking to grind out for the Rathalos mount.
"don't get hit" and "Stay out of attacks" is always a good advice^^ Avoid everything is what I keep saying :P
As someone who plays both final and MH let me tell you, in front of Rath is NOT where you want to be.
It is if you run hammer. Blunt force induced seizures. The lances don't mind either, because shields.
You'll want to be careful of being behind him, too. Although that applies even more to Rathian.
@@Hambs23 With Hammer it's all about "Wait for the 45 degree turn and nail the head with a golf club swing.
Thanks for this. Just got back into the game and this has helped a ton
Dude great guy really and I watch a lot of guide videos! You explain things in such a simple yet complex way and you should be a teacher haha
Pretty sure the spin attack is always on his right. So if you stay to his left flank you are safe
yeah the dragon is "right tailed"
The three tank strat is nice for pf groups, though.
literally what I do as a Long Sword user on Monster Hunter World
Four Warriors, job done 💪
Yea the tank method is the best!
How to heal????
Khanh Tran - is this sarcasm? WAR have excellent self heals on their own and healing spells don't work anyways
Exactly. Also tanks could take the Stack markers by themselves letting the other 3 tanks to fill the bar to drop Rathalos.
Dysth Ymia I’ve never played warrior or heal in ff14 i’m just casua with all dps classes and paladin
I saw Sync Weaver do this fight in one of his streams. It was hilarious. But yeah, this game collab was awesome.
If you see someone jumping while dodging, they're trying to dodge roll due to muscle memory.
so basically playing monster hunter in ff14
I want to see some good BLMx4 or SAMx4 in this fight.
Hi - I dont usually comment. First I want to say this is a really nice guide as always. However there are a few things you missed or not quiet right (this is just my opinion/perspective that I hope can help others - happy to be corrected)
The first thing if you have a classic party setup is he seems to always attack the tank first after the roar (well he did for my 50+ runs).
Gotta get back on XIV and regear. I neeeeeed that mount.
You need 50 of the rathalos+ drops but i heard it appears at the end of the fight too
I'm aware, but my issue is now I left when I was progressing O3S, so I'm sitting at a cool 320 ilvl, I have my work cut out first finding out what all I missed and farming gear.
Just bring out the dusty warrior bis gear and 1 shot him.
It's dusty ninja gear :(
AzureRaven You can get to iLvl 340 fairly easy. Just farm Creation tomes.
i hope they do more 4 man extreme instances. ive always wanted something like this
Is there a specific amount of damage the FireBall will do if you don't stack ? Every farming party I join don't want to stack so I get one-shot and it's frustrating
Amazing guide! as usual :)
Hopefully I can do this soon. I only have AST and Bard and i340.
Knowing how fast adapting and smart rathalos is if he got away in the first fight he would be actually difficult when you relocated him
He only flew about.. 15% of what he usually does in MHW :O
So uh...be honest. How are my chances for finding people to do this with? I'm a new player who is a massive Monster Hunter fan and I need this mount. xD
Fun fight, got the mount today!
iLightningG4xx lucky.does it drop in the fight?
iLightningG4xx or did you do the scale plus farm?
Bradley Houston the mount has a chance of dropping but I farmed scales
this is the best update ever!
the bard lb cheese wasn't in this guide lol (bard/machinist can lb1 both the head and tail on first down and then lb2 it on second down for an insanely quick fight)
I think the enrage mostly happens sometime after knocking down rathalos 4 times. I counted and he enraged after that.
But damn let some other monsters shine
>not capturing the rathalos
and not cutting the tail. Pfff, noobs
Ah a scholar's dream... Not having to heal.
Each time Rath is down in this video, i just wait for Jho to apear on the stage to have some fun time smashing hunters ... erm WoL's.
Also is very important to LB Rathalos while it's down, otherwise it's going to be a lot harder to kill!!! Pretty cool fight but it's difficult to find random people who know how to dodge the attacks (I play with advantage as I'm a Monster Hunter player and I know Rathalos movements pretty well)
If you play in Zodiark as DPS or healer find me to play this!! Patty Jab on game :)
Thanks
Can this EX Event be done unsync'd and still get the same loots? Thanks for this guide @Mrhappy1227!
It's such a shitty time to be a melee DPS right now. Time to gear up my PLD...
So this isn't a timed event and I don't need to rush? Awesome! I thought it would only last like 2 weeks or something
Me a monster hunter veteran: my time time has come
helped a lot! now i never get hit by anything!
Is this the new Smash Bros game
I've never fought behemoth in his own game, but I have a pretty decent grasp of final fantasy's formula
What's the monster hunter version like?
@@rukrawczyk For both Normal and Extreme if you don't have a good team you're practically fucked unless your a Monster Hunter Veteran like me that solos Lv 140 Apex Rajangs for a morning warm up.
If you have a good team you can kill both in like 2 to 3 minutes with no effort just cluster bomb the hell out of him and your good. Compared to Ancient Leshon behemoth is easy even then the WW for that asshole is 02'30"98.
Don't get hit is actually the BEST advice, as a Monster Hunter player, its all we strive to do. #gitgud thanks for the guide. I have a long way to lvl 80 cause Im a sprout, but where do I go to pick up the Hunt quest?
Only thing I wish was added in the fight is rolling and diving but I know thats impossible to add a feature in final fantasy
When I did it with the cone swing standing on his left leg will never hit you. I screw it up some times but yeah. Left leg safe
I wish we could get a palico minion.
"Don't get hit" So just like MH, then?
rathalos enraged after being alive after 4th down for me
Is rathalos the only boss that gets knocked over? In this game?
okay for all the healers out there, what do i NOT need for this fight, so i can slot Esuna? i don't normally take it, as it is pretty much useless except for certain fights in this expansion. Thanks ;)
Shadowknight7287 I'm not a healer but I think lucid dreaming can go in favor of esuna for this fight since there's no aggro table
I don't think Largesse is really needed since you can only heal the first phase, and as long as you're on top of it and he doesn't roar right before Garula attacks, it's pretty easy.
David Thomas Lucid is not just for aggro. It's used mostly for mp regen, which is desperately needed on AST since we have mp problems
I think you could just switch out Protect after casting it in the beginning. I run Esuna, Largesse, Lucid, Swift, Cleric.
Tbh, Largesse is kind of useless, and if you know how to manage your mana regeneration, Lucid Dreaming can go for Cleric Stance for extra dps.
The limit on the final phase seems to be 4 downs.
very very good video high definition and super accurate
but according to larry warrior is also a DPS
Dose the chest share the items to the party or everyone gets it?
Mrhappy PLays a Lala
I really don't like it when groups emphasize the 3 tank 1 healer meta... Means all DPS are left to bite the dust. I've cleared it 20+ times as a DPS, it's not that difficult.
So we can basically just fight him the same way we fight them in the first game?
In high rank
Flash Him down
IN master rank
Gun him down
Lowkey wish FFXIV got Xeno'jiiva instead of Rathalos although Rathalos is more iconic
Rathalos nova looking like iceborne fatalis mini nova
Should have put Tigrex in this lol.
Are the 10 Mega-potions shared?
Nope. Everyone has 10.
So from what I understand of this 'guide'. The whole idea is move right, a lot. Seems like a sound strat.
Then shadowbringers brings tigrex
So hes in raged in the last phase XD
Too bad the damage on the Rathalos isn't MH font. Whenever the Behemoth in MHW is damaged the font is from FFXIV. A missed opportunity to a cool easter egg.
anyone know how to interact with the foot hold on ps4? T.T
I'm haven't played since omega savage. whats the easiest way to obtain ilv 250 for extreme?
*350. & By running dungeons / spending mendacity / doing alphascape
Why is it so hard to find players who actually want to put in the effort to learn new content? Everyone drops...every time. ._.
how do you use the mega potion with the ps4
You use the touch pad
Hold the trigger and press R3
I love to run this with 4 tanks XD
