Warner Bros. Pictures invites you to experience the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond in “The Color Purple.” This bold new take on the beloved classic is directed by Blitz Bazawule, a multi-medium artist whose breakout first feature is the highly acclaimed “The Burial of Kojo.” The film’s all-star producers are Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones.
“The Color Purple” stars Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), SAG Award winner and Tony Award nominee Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple,” “Orange Is the New Black”), Tony nominee and Emmy Award winner Colman Domingo (“Euphoria,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Tony Award nominee Corey Hawkins (“Six Degrees of Separation,” “In the Heights”), Oscar- and Grammy-winning artist H.E.R. (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Grammy nominee Halle Bailey (“The Little Mermaid”), Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard,” “Ray”), and Grammy-winning artist Fantasia Barrino in her major motion picture debut.
The screenplay is by acclaimed playwright Marcus Gardley, who won a WGA Award for “Maid.” His script is based on the novel by Alice Walker and based on the musical stage play, book (of the musical stage play) by Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
Joining director Bazawule behind the camera are a roster of acclaimed artisans, including Oscar-nominated director of photography Dan Laustsen (“The Shape of Water”), Oscar-winning production designer Paul Denham Austerberry (“The Shape of Water”), editor Jon Poll (“Bombshell,” “Meet the Parents”), costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck (“Glory,” “One Night in Miami…”) and choreographer Fatima Robinson (“Dreamgirls”). The music is by Oscar nominee Kris Bowers (“King Richard,” “Green Book,” documentary short “A Concerto Is a Conversation”).

to anyone that is complaining about the new adaptation of the color purple, here is something you should know. this is NOT a remake of the classic 1985 film, this new movie is based on the musical version that was on broadway. the musical is actually vastly different from the movie. it follows the book much closer so it’s gonna be a completely different interpretation that has no connection to the original movie at all. this movie will be its own thing so there is nothing to complain about and there is nothing to worry about. the original movie will remain untouched. just keep watching the original movie if you that pressed and shut up lol. this new version won’t take away from the original AT ALL. and it’s not like the original is being replaced. people need to understand the difference between remake and adaptation. besides, the cast for this movie is STACKED and they are all insanely talented. there’s way too much talent in that cast to complain. based on the trailer, it looks like it’s gonna be an amazing movie.

I had the pleasure of being a set dresser for this film, and getting to see so many of the sets I worked on in this trailer gets me so excited. So much work, from all cast and crew, went into this. I can't wait to see the end result.

I am rooting for Fantasia and Danielle so far from both of the trailers, they look like they steal the show. Fingers crossed that they both win, best actress and best supporting actress at this year‘s Oscar this is going to be a great movie I can feel it.

I didn't know they made a movie or a musical. I knew this story from the book. I watched the movie and thought it was great. And while the musical is interesting way to go about it it gets the story across. So this new movie should have no issues.

Fell in love with this book when i first read it in highschool, and despite being into broadway, i never got into the musical. This feels like the perfect oppurtunity to get back into this story!

I loved the previous movie and was wowed from what snippets of the musical I saw at the Tony Awards. They have involvement from cast and crew of both productions, so I'm REALLY hopeful.

Fantasia's has been recognized for her talent for almost 20 years. She won Idol in 2004. She's had two gold albums, number one singles, two Broadway shows, 12 Grammy nominations, a Grammy award, a Theatre World award, etc.

This one seems a lot more musical than the original and I won't complain if we get to see Halle sing again. Steven Spielberg having originated from book to screen couldn't stay away from involvement in the remake... surely this is a sign it's going to be a good one then?!
It’s more musical because this is based off the Broadway musical which is more accurate to the original book than the first film was.

Steven Spielberg is written all over this trailer. The light effects are instantly recognisable.
You're looking at Blitz Bazawule's work, not Spielberg's. Bazawule directed the film. He is also a visual artist. Spielberg is one of the producers.

The only thing I've been waiting to see is at least a snippet of Fantasia acting and I keep seeing everyone else. So when they showed a tiny tiny tiny shot of her sitting at the table and gaining her confidence that made me smile and realize she may actually kill this!!! 🙂

With his benevolent, objective, and spectacular style no one could have done a better job than Steven Spielberg with The Color Purple. That being said, this musical version looks VERY promising!
I will definitely agree that Steven Spielberg is a freaking work of art himself with all that he has produced and done. But doesn't mean there's not somebody that's going to do it better. Like literally there's always going to be somebody better out there. And that's great. Nothing wrong with that. I'm sure Steven Spielberg, as an artist himself, would more than likely agree that anybody and everybody can remake something even that he is made and possibly just quite possibly could do it a little better. Everybody's vision Can be different... I most definitely see nothing wrong with that

Dude this isn’t a remake. This isn’t Spielberg’s story. He directed a film based on a book written by Alice Walker. It was adapted to broadway as musical based on the book not Spielberg’s version. Now the musical is a film. I love the original film too but these are very different interpretations so I don’t understand why people are assuming it’s a remake.
@@Jay41 - The original post didn't mention a remake at all: "this musical version looks very promising". Similar to the Wizard of Oz and The Wiz or Romeo and Juliet or even Les Miserables. There are many different versions of the same story.

This right here is the best redo of a movie I've ever seen....wow can't wait until Christmas. I'm Jewish and we don't do anything anyways on Christmas, so what better day to be able to eat Asian food and watch The Color Purple
i read the book in highschool, took me months. then one day i said im finishing it and ended up being one of the greatest. this trailer gave me GOOSEBUMPS

There’s an interview last year that Brenda Russell did, one of the composers of the music in The Color Purple Broadway Musical. She said one of the scenes moved Alice to tears while on the movie set. That’s encouraging.

I loved the original version of the movie growing up. I still watch it when it comes on TV. I saw the musical on Broadway and felt it needs a movie to reach more audiences. Glad it's finally happening.

Steven Speilberg.... even as a producer, DAMN!!!! This movie is going to challenge Flowers of the Killer Moon! Both will be nominated for best picture for sure! I'm not sure why people seem dismayed about this version. Why not give it a fresh take, it will NEVER replace the original and I for one will continue to watch both every chance I get. Now I have 2 versions to watch. Find something else to complain about..sheesh!!!

Interesting to see this get a new adaptation.
I'm not really sure because I've watched the color purple at least 100 times in my life, it is by far the film that I have watched the most of any in this world.../. a REMAKE -- it does have a bit of cringe factor but I am open to an interpretation, because if you're going to imitate a film you should most definitely imitate the best, it just feels uncomfortable because it has a special place for me. So IDK. I'm sure there are many who haven't even seen the original, so maybe they'll so shine a light on that.

I'm divided on this since the original was so good, especially Whoopi, Oprah, and Danny Glover. Especially Danny Glover. It's a testament to his acting abilities that he was terrifying in that part but is so likable in nearly everything else he does.
And this is the movie Whoopi SHOULD have got the Oscar for.

Danny Glover and Whoopi were incredible in the original film. Unfortunately this movie has a lot to live up to and today's Hollywood just isn't up to the job in my opinion.
This is not a remake of the movie its an adaption of the stage play so it doesn't have to live up to the movie at all
