- LEBANON: "This is a very, very dangerous situation!" Now an ex-general issues a strong warning!
According to the latest Lebanese reports, more than 500 people were killed in Monday's massive Israeli air strikes. As Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad told journalists on Tuesday, his agency has so far registered at least 558 people killed in the Israeli air strikes the day before. Among them were "50 children and 94 women."
According to the minister, this is the highest number of deaths since the last war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006. "The vast majority, if not all, are unarmed people who were in their homes," he added.
On Monday, the Israeli army said it had attacked around 1,600 targets in a military operation called "Northern Arrows" to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure in its strongholds in southern Lebanon and in the eastern Bekaa Valley. The targets were "buildings, vehicles and infrastructure" "where rockets, guided missiles, rocket launchers and drones posed a threat" to Israel, it said. A "large number" of Hezbollah members were killed.
For almost a year, northern Israel has been under constant attack from Hezbollah. The Israeli army is responding with counterattacks on Hezbollah targets in the neighboring country.
Dozens of "terror targets" were also hit in Lebanon on Tuesday night, the Israeli armed forces announced. On Tuesday morning, another army statement said that "in the past few hours" the Israeli air force had "hit Hezbollah terror targets in southern Lebanon," including "rocket launchers, terrorist infrastructure sites and buildings where weapons were stored."
Hezbollah again launched massive attacks from Lebanon on northern Israel this morning.
In a televised address on Monday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on civilians in Lebanon to leave the danger zone. He accused Hezbollah of using its own population as human shields.
The last war between Israel and Hezbollah began in July 2006. Within 34 days, almost 1,400 people were killed, including 1,200 on the Lebanese side, most of them civilians. The Lebanon War was ended by UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Among other things, it contained demands for Hezbollah to be disarmed and withdrawn behind the Litani River, the northern border of the agreed demilitarized zone.
