    Man, you had both hands full and your-hair-in-your-mouth with this one!! One handed filming, painting, narrating, even delighting us with some pallet action! Meastro!! Amazing.

    Your clouds remind me a bit of Sisley’s studies on how the light reflects in the snow. He’s one of my faves and you too for sure, such a gorgeous way of capturing light and nature with simplicity

    Great job on the clouds, Michael! I'm always amazed at how there are never clouds in the sky there in CA. Even without clouds in the sky, you always make the sky look interesting.

    I like the cloud effects. That area of California is so beautiful in regard to the sea coast. The Monterey wind swept coast and the jet stream. Study of clouds. I liked your painting a lot.

    Very nice painting, Michael. The composition and perspective really sell it. It is interesting to me that the view is so much closer in the painting than the video. I wonder how much of this is because of the camera lens, which always makes everything look further away, and how much was just a decision on your part to zoom in on the distant landscape.

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  2 года назад

      Thanks Will! I think I could have had less contrast in the clouds. That would have pushed them back. The scene I painted was in the distance. I like painting distant scenes because detail is eliminated. Easier to compose and simplify!

    I'm really glad that you are as open to experimentation and trying new things as you are, and especially that you are confident enough to show them in process. For someone established and known for their "style", I think it takes a lot of courage. It was an interesting and I think largely successful painting. I especially liked the yellow ochre tone color -- I think it worked very well for this scene, especially for the sky. I would like to see the picture again, should you decide to rework the clouds. As they are they are very dramatic, maybe too much so for my taste. But so what about that: I'll be the first to admit that I don't know what I'm talking about. Thanks for sharing!

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  2 года назад +3

      Thanks Michael! As others suggested, I think I'll leave this one as is and attempt another with bigger, simpler shapes. I love experimentation. It's what keeps me excited to paint!

    Really interesting to watch a longer video of you painting. Did this one actually take longer, or did you just include more footage? I did a painting in gouache where I toned my board in yellow ochre. It was of the beach right at the sunset but with the sun behind me, so the sky was illuminated but not the full on amazing colours of an actual sunset. I felt it created a lovely luminous, airy effect but I am pretty sure that I did not wipe the yellow ochre back as much as you did - it was probably half to one shade more intense. There was no problem with the blue of the sky mixing with the yellow ochre, but then gouache is a different beast from oil paint. Just thought I would share my experience. : ) Amanda

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  2 года назад

      Thanks Amanda! I just included more footage. I think I talked more during this painting. I tried leaving more of the yellow ochre but it wouldn't stain the panel the way burnt sienna does. I may try a different yellow. Hansa yellow light for example.

    Just the thought of painting outdoors with some friends in such a beautiful place brings me peace! I’ve never tried oil painting, but I’d love to learn how to do some plein air stuff. Where would you recommend starting?

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  2 года назад +1

      It can be really helpful to take an introductory painting class to learn the basics before heading outdoors to paint. You could also learn from videos or books if that works better for you. It takes a while to get comfortable with the materials and the painting process. Once you're comfortable go for it! I made a video talking about the materials you need: ruclips.net/video/K3E-VQ3Xmxo/видео.html

    “” Cloud Walkers “” in the sky move to and into a clear water center from left, yet others have ascended out of the same and move to the right. I think there are at least 3 dimensions here in these clouds. Viewed differently, see to the left and to the right two faces gazing skywards, both have a chin , each towards center. Many beautiful things in this painting , Thank you Michael. ❤️

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  2 года назад

      Thanks Andrew! I find that I often need to mix some phthalo blue with ultramarine for the darker portion of the sky. If I just use ultramarine it ends up looking like the shadow portion of the clouds. I'll try to talk about it in a future video!

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  2 года назад +2

      I used to use cerulean instead of phthalo for that very reason, but I like that I can get saturated tints with phthalo. It also mixes beautiful saturated aqua colors.
