Beautiful painting! This one zings! I love the warm and bright yellows/oranges/burnt sienna contrasting with the blues and greens of the water. I think the touches of warm reflective light on the waves is especially effective. As a beginner, had not thought of ramping up the warm colors to create sense of strong light when there are no shadows. I tend to paint moody scenes of cloudy days and will try to do this to get more zing. Thanks for talking about the pigments used and thoughts on pre-mixing. As always, I’m grateful for your efforts and really enjoy your videos.
Thanks Lisa! It took me a while to figure out how much I needed to push the warmth. My paintings used to look dull when I'd get them home. No light. Even when there are shadows to work with I still exaggerate the warmth!
You have become my favorite artist! I am currently switching from acrylics to oils and am experiencing some 'pain'...quite different on many levels but I'm plugging away! Your videos are superb not only from an artistic point of view but from a human 'regular guy' perspective! I've enjoyed each and every one of them! Looking forward to more of the same! Thanks!
Still creates light when there’s a lack of shadows Sometimes these paintings hit like a fire hose Whether with the scrub in or the loaded brush He’ll make magic to Poseidon’s crush Water translucency, words leave me though Glad he gets some fuel from a burrito Check out Patreon, had to edit coz I forgot Stay creative, no afterthought. 🌯😁 The colors of the water! The way you added the distant land and the depths you created in the cliffs. Amazing. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
Great composition I think. And the way you paint water is fantastic. How in the world do you manage to video the entire thing too. From different angles too. Amazing!
Thanks Susanne! I feel like I've gotten better at knowing the shots I need to make a video that feels complete. It's become fairly routine. However I must admit, it's a lot easier to paint without filming! 😂
Once again, great work showing close ups of your brush work and palette and also explaining when you changed brushes. That was awesome. And the effect was quite a punch, especially the ocean. You really created depth with the ocean and the distant land. Just lovely.
The painting painting turned out really well. The point of land in the far distance looks great and really pulls the composition together. Really nice painting.
MICHAEL - “” see the liquid glow of ambered sunlight on the horizon, there, it meets gentled mists in the distant shore , , guardians of the rock their layered images multiply in the close up pull back, , they were visited by the sea fairies, , leaving there shadows of light among them , , opened , the portal of future memories, base of the stone with ocean converge “” Beautiful painting Michael 🤔🙂
Really beautiful painting Michael. I love the colors in the water and the warm tones in the cliffs. I know that spot well. I’ve painted there many times but never successfully… Let me know when you’re out here next time😊
I loved this one! I think put in orangish highlights in the water made it pop. I would have never have tried it but now I am going to. I love how detailed you are with what brushes you scrub with and what brushes you put the final strokes with. I am learning so much from your videos and I appreciate your teaching methods. Thank you!
Stunning! I just love your style and brush strokes. Also I think you really understand your subject well. Thank you once again for your generosity in sharing your knowledge.
Love your stuff! Question: sometimes I see you use a Takeit easel and sometimes you use. . .something else- what? Also, what is your pochade/paint box? Thanks, L in HMB.
In 2:40 you talk about not picking the toning with blue on sky. I think you pick the color, but it turns in to the blue-gray undertone that is quite right.
I think the old PBS series, “ welcome to my studio.... With Helen Van Wyk “ May be The video series that you mentioned that had very solid and fundamental painting principles that you learned from! I hope this has been of some help , I learned a great deal from this series , About traditional realistic oil painting techniques. I only recently discovered your RUclips channel and have greatly enjoyed and learned from it! For having been so new to the oil medium and painting and all that that entails, you have come a long way in a short time!...... very impressive, thank you for sharing! Rice, beans, cheese, and avocado. For the beans I usually go with whole pinto beans but will occasionally switch it up with refried or black beans. So good! 😊
love that you decide on a goal before you start your painting...describing light without shadows!!!
Turned out beautifully! The warmth on the cliffs really makes the light shine!
Nice earth tone colors for the rocks. The blue/green ocean colors are beautiful.
Thanks Paul!

Warmth and light glow in this one Mike, even the water didn't detract from that, well done.
Thanks Bert!
Again, great video and painting. Love again the way you use the camera close during painting and explaining. Thanks again!

Lovely…you achieved your goal! Hope you’re feeling well…I hear a little hoarseness in your voice; I’m sure the burrito was helpful 😊
Thanks! Yes, I think the hoarseness is from too much singing 😂👍
