Out of all the diy roof rack builds I’ve watched on RUclips, I’d say yours looked to be the simplest and cleanest! I think I will take more of this approach for sure, great video!
@@aramschannel Just a couple quick question as I’m ready to order all the materials needed. How tall were the side rails used? I know how long I need and I know how thick. Thanks for the info!
Hey man! Thanks for this video - super easy to follow allow. My roof tracks only have 2 (either side) of the "sliding things" that allow for the extrusions/mounting feet to screw into. Do you know where else I could source some?
Man I love that there is no welding or big machinery needed, have really wanted to do this but keep hitting road blocks with some parts. Gonna try to get this made. Thanks a lot bro! Btw where in Canada are you from? I’m in peel region
Great work man. This has inspired me and a friend to do the same to both our vehicles. Do you have any tips for cutting that aluminum with your jigsaw?
Man I am so glad I found this video. Your rig is beautiful, I just acquired a 98 the same color and plan to build a rack like yours! I have a stack of scrap aluminum i just need to see if they're big enough, what is the height of your side plates and front plate??? Thanks!
Thank you, I'm glad you found the video useful! The sides are about 4" but I'd go a bit smaller if I was to do it again, maybe 3.5". The front I will have to measure in a few days, the 4runners in the shop at the moment
Thank you! You definitely could drop the height but would need different mounts. I think a bit lower would look better but I could only go off of the mounts if that makes sense
The parts that I thought it will not be a problem to get turned out to be an issue. Any recommendations on aluminum sheets / strips, where I can find them?
Just need to ask….what was your all-in cost? I know what Sherpa and PrinSu and Victory 4x4 go for. Just curious if this was worth it price wise vs buying one of the mentioned? Obviously prices on aluminum will be different depending where people live and supply and demand. Just wondering a rough estimate. AWESOME video BTW. Thanks
Thank you! My all in cost was roughly $550 USD. I would say the most expensive part of this was the mounting feet that I ordered straight from sherpa. Not only are they expensive but I had to pay for shipping to Canada AND duties once they arrived. If you could figure out your own mounts, this would be significantly cheaper! I am actually planning on potentially selling this one and making another with different mounts. I would like to cut the price way down :)
@@aramschannel Hey, I made some really simple mounting brackets that would probably work great for what you’re doing. Just 1in aluminum stock with thru holes for m6 bolts that screw directly into the factory rail nuts. Then some tapped ¼ 20 holes in the middle 1in apart to accept t nut hardware. Ultra low profile and super cheap!
@@aramschannel I’ve got photos but sadly I don’t sell them. The version I made is a little fancier since I used a milling machine, but the version I described could be made with a drill press. If you want pictures or blueprints I’d be happy to provide!
Keep an eye out for my next video, I'm hoping to post within the next few weeks. I built an improved version of this rack. I'm gonna have a full template available for this roof rack :)

@@jamesmengel5818 mine are about 4"
If I did it again, I'd probably go a bit shorter maybe 3.5
Thing looks perfect man good job 🤘🏽🤘🏽
thank you!
Thank you for this! I knew i wanted to modify my 4runner as my senior project and now i know what i’m doing!
That's dope bro. I did the same thing 2 years ago using Sherpa mounts on my 3rd gen too. Tons of ways to mount stuff with extrusion bars.
Thanks a lot man!
Thank you for sharing ordering mine right now.
You're most welcome!
this was awesome to watch !
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Man you did an awesome job thank you so much for the video I think I’m gonna try it.
Thanks!! I'm glad to hear that, good luck with the project!

I'm glad it helped!
Best bet would probably be a scrap yard or look at facebook marketplace for someone parting out a 4runner
Thank u again bud just got done with mine.
Nice! How did it turn out?
@@aramschannel the side plates not the best looking ones, but solid and it's doing what a Prinsu would do. Thanks.
@@larryavdili3063 That's awesome! my side plates aren't the best either haha, not the straightest cut

I actually made another rack recently. Check out my last two videos, they might help!

Is it possible to drop the height?

Love your channel!
Thank you!!
Wow this looking good
Thank you!
I'm currently building another one, will have a video on it soon
Could you please make the parts list more detailed, like exactly what I got and how many
Dope build ! Cool channel ! New sub !
Thank you, much appreciated!!!
How'd you know which model to buy for your mounting feet?
Great video in the process of making mine.
Thank you!
The sherpa website specifies the models. The rack they make for the 3rd gen is called the matterhorn which is the same name for the mounts
Awesome work! I’m planning on trying that but I’m curious how long are the aluminum extrusions? (From what I can imagine is that they are 41” long)
Thank you!
They are actually 44" but you could get away with shorter ones if you wanted
The parts that I thought it will not be a problem to get turned out to be an issue. Any recommendations on aluminum sheets / strips, where I can find them?
I got mine just from a local metal supplier. I'm sure there's gotta be a metal shop where you are
If you use a self etching primer, you shouldn’t need to grind or sand the metal as it has an acid that bites into the metal
What’s the weight capacity on the stock rails ? I would be afraid of them snapping off during the drive and the roof top tent falling off
I don't actually know but I'm not worried about it. Sherpa equipment makes their racks exactly the same way as well
Buen trabajo
What's the length of your wind faring?
I believe it was 42" but I ended us selling the rack. I'm actually building a better one right now, should have a video on it soon
Siiiiiiiiick!
thank you!
How long is the aluminum side piece?

What front bumper is that?
It's from coastal offroad, it comes in pieces and you have to weld it together. I have a video on it if you wanna check it out!
Anybody have a cad for this?

Cool, can't wait. How about an online store to buy the aluminum? It doesn't look like Amazon has it
@jreg0028 for the aluminum sheet, I would just go to a local metal shop.
If you buy it online the shipping will probably be expensive
