Punching With The Hips - Part 3 of 3

  • Let’s continue getting power from our hip rotation.
Since the hip controls our center of gravity, and therefore the movement of our bodyweight, we need to make it rotate into a punch explosively. Like we saw in the Part II video, we need a proper base to deliver an effective hip rotation. Now we’ll look at what the lower body can do to augment the hip’s speed.
    EXECUTION
If you’re bringing the right hip around…
    1. Spin on the ball of the right foot. This is the reason we pushed for a “light heel” in the last video. Have it ready to go.
    2. Actively rotate the right knee in.
    3. Rotate the hip through.
    4. If going for power, sit down on the punch!
    WHAT TO THINK ABOUT
    • LINE UP YOUR POWER! The heel rotates out until it finishes in the direction of the target. The knee rotates in until it finishes in the direction of the target. This allows the hip to come around and finish in the same direction. Under-rotating the leg leaves power behind. Over-rotating the leg pushes the power in the wrong direction.
    • We separate the leg into the heel, knee and hip, but think about all three elements coming through at the same time. The key here is that everything contributes to this movement…nothing is “going along for the ride”.
    • Like we saw in the last video, it’s of paramount importance to have slightly bent knees and the weight on the front half of the foot. If we’re flatfooted with locked out knees, we need to FIRST get into a good position before executing. There’s no point in speeding up the hip if we add in extra moves.
    • This is absolutely a continuation of the first 2 parts. Maintain correct technique while adding this in.

The old-time great Sam Langford was once asked the secret of his punching power. He replied, “Ain’t no secret, I just get my hips into those punches”.

Great quote. Thanks man. Never heard it before but that dude was a badass fighter with over 100 KOs so I’m gonna listen to everything he says!

you actually don't need to rotate the knee at all....beginners mostly overrotate the hip because of that
