Cheesecake didn't originate in America. lol It was in Europe for many years before it was in the US. You don't have to use cream cheese, either, as ricotta or marscapone are good options to use in it, as well, which are Italian cheeses.
Very belated comment: there are TWO KINDS OF CHEESECAKE: baked, and unbaked. New York style is baked. The Pennsylvania Dutch (and apparently the Irish) style is unbaked. Similar ingredients, different dessert. Baked is dense, rich, hearty. Unbaked is light, delicate, flavorful. There's no right answer here, just like there's no right answer to "crisp biscuits or chewy biscuits?"
