Good OC spray and a good flashlight are a far better self defense combination than many people realize. I fall back to your "it's something in between a harsh word and a gun" quote all the time.
So I buy two six packs of POM OC spray every Christmas to give as gifts. That way people don't need to remember to buy new spray every year. I do it for them.

I think you covered just about everything.
From an LE background, I would add consider your environment when using pepper spray. If out doors, which way is the wind blowing,; you don’t want to have the spray blowing back into your face.
Secondly, if used indoors, even with a stream, there can be a residual mist of the spray that can affect you in addition to the bad guy.
Finally, pepper spray may not work on people under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or are in mental health crisis.
Food for thought when considering deploying pepper spray.
My experience was with a weaker pepper spray that really wasn’t all that effective. People were able to fight through it. When we switched to Saber Red, it was quite effective. But it affected us cops too if we walked into that “wall” of residual mist.
It can be an effective tool to give you time to get away from the situation.

Hi Tessah, I just wanted to comment and say that I've appreciated your videos a lot because of their clear, concise (sometimes very concise) explanations with very helpful visuals to back them up. I recently decided to take the step from an off-the-rack FOMI clip holster to a custom piece that carries the pistol/light combo that I've wanted for a while. Your tips about and demonstrations of carry styles, belt clips, and more have been indispensable.
Do you think that some time you could make a video about why you choose to own guns and why you concealed carry? I think that a lot of people who are a bit confused about or made nervous by guns would really appreciate hearing what in your philosophy and/or worldview led you to do so because you present things in a calm, logical way without a tough guy routine or fluff. More people need to hear why kind, calm, normal people are involved with guns and therefore make informed decisions.
Thank you, stay armed, stay styled!

If you don't know those yet, you might want to take a look at the Piexon Guardian Angel, it is a two-shot pepper spray device that uses small explosive charges to propel a really thick spray.
Good thing is it can be safely used against the wind and has plenty enough pressure to push the liquid right through the fabric of a ski mask, around large sunglasses and so on. The stuff will shoot straight up somebodies nose when hit in the face, even with eyes firmly closed it will make direct contact with the eyeball, effects are pretty much immediate, very nasty stuff.
You only have two uses, but I consider this an advantage as I can shoot off both charges rendering the device inert, ready to be dropped to quickly free my hands without the possibility to be picked up and used against me.

  • @3nertia
    @3nertia 2 года назад +1

YES YES YES!!! Pepper spray (I prefer gel) is the *most underrated* but also the *most useful* self-defense tool! Mine has already saved my bacon once heh. The gel I use was effective even though the dude (who was wearing glasses) was a split second from being on top of me with his aggression so I'm gonna press X to Doubt on the claim that they don't work as quickly ...
Personally, I feel that *every* good person should carry at least one non-lethal option and one lethal option for self-defense :)

  • @gcvrsa
    @gcvrsa 6 месяцев назад

The problem with "less lethal" forms of self-defense is that if you are surprised, it's not always possible to determine the actual threat level of a potential attacker, and if you guess wrong, not only will there very likely be no time to change your mind, failure to meet an attack with potentially lethal force could prove fatal for you. Self-defense scenarios play out in much less time than your brain can handle, and even trained soldiers and police officers who are already operating in a heightened state of situational awareness can still be taken by surprise when unforeseen, uncontrollable, chaotic events occur.
Based on Tessah's advice here, I've ordered a POM OC Clip, and I'm going to begin carrying it, but it will never bee in a position on my person where I will reach for it instinctively if I am surprised. It will only ever be placed where I have to think about where it is, so that I will only ever draw it if and when I have time and presence of mind to draw it in preparation for a potential threat.
Real life is not a Hollywood movie or a television show. The action you see on the screen is contrived and heroically dramatized. Real fights are terrifying and chaotic, and the good guy doesn't always win in the end. A swung fist can easily kill or maim you with one punch. If you are at the point where you are justified in spraying someone with pepper spray, you are very likely also at the point where you would be justified in using potentially lethal force to stop an attack.
Pepper spray is not a joke, and should never be used lightly. Never use a weapon of any kind merely to threaten. Never brandish a weapon of any kind unless you are in a situation where you would be justified in pulling the trigger. Fear alone is not a justification for the use of force of any kind. OC spray should be treated with every bit as much care as a lethal weapon. But, pepper spray is also not a magic wand, and it won't necessarily incapacitate an attacker (or a aggressive animal), either.

So we just moved into condo complex and had a bit of a scare when my nine-year-old nephew nearly got snatched while walking the dog. Fast-forward a few weeks and we wanted to go to the complex pool but because it was around Labor Day we were in sure if it was open. So my wife has the idea of sending our 14-year-old down to look at it and he drives his feet because he selectively decides to be scared even though he goes out all the time. My response was to pull my pom out of the pocket and hand it to him. "He has but how do I use it"
I explained " just lift the cap and press the button,"but she probably does into the wall behind us. For context my whole family was gathered around a king size bed a good 5 to 7 ft away. We instantly all felt the effects and started choking and coughing uncontrollably and had to evacuate the room. The good news is that we know it works now the bad news is I came this close to paternal homicide.

From an European point of view, it's interesting to call it 'underrated'. It's pretty much the #1 thing people would buy for self defense. Inexpensive, more reliable than say a taser, and may even help you escape from multiple assailants (assuming they are unarmed, or 'only' have knives and such). As far as non-lethal self defense goes, there aren't many other tools that offer both range and the ability to hit multiple people in quick succession. I'm thinking of getting some as I'm planning to buy an e-bike, bought an alarm for it, but that leads to the question - what next. I see a bunch of people trying to steal my bike, and then what. In my area they are unlikely to have firearms, but may have knives, power tools (for stealing the bike), or just be big guys and have numbers advantage. So it would be unwise to approach too close. But I think spraying them from afar then running away would be better than just accepting that the bike will get stolen before the police arrive (if they even bother to arrive for bike theft).
And of course having a pepper spray on me could come useful if I ever become a target, rather than my possessions. Or if I need to protect someone from violence.

As a former LEO from large inner city my experience with pepper spray is that it never really bothered me... Perhaps because we were all sprayed down in the academy and there was no mystique or anxiety about it. What I did notice, particularly in warmer weather, is when we were rolling around fighting in the street the scumbag would get really "slippery" so it was hard to get them on their stomach and cuff them. Of course in the civilian context I guess that is rarely a concern.

In my workplace (commercial security), I'm not allowed to carry a firearm. The facility produces fumes that could easily present a great big fireball of a hazard if the muzzle flash is in the wrong place.
I am issued OC spray. Aside from practicing drawing and spraying, I haven't needed it.
One of the things I like about spray is that because it's far less lethal, if I find it necessary to use it, I'm not going to face the same type of legal troubles I would face using a firearm.
I'm statistically more likely to have use for a very basic traumatic bleed kit than I am a firearm. I carry a Live The Creed pocket pack with gloves, some QuikClot, and a SWAT-T elastic band (can sort-of work as a tourniquet, but also can function to keep the QuikClot in place).

I want to add another tidbit about gel pepper canisters and its application. Unlike sprays or fogs, gels do not interact with indoor ventilation systems. I work in a building occupied by other people where I might have to use my pepper gel, and I don’t want to risk contaminating the whole work place with this substance. I’ve read and found other videos warning about using pepper spray in environments where innocent bystanders might be affected by the residuals that h stay in the air after the incident is over. An example might be a restaurant bathroom or classroom where other unintended targets might be affected as a result of the ventilation system. If I can find the video where I learned this, I’ll link it below.

In some states (like California) using a gun for self-defense when an attacker isn't using "deadly force" is considered a crime. Using pepper spray instead is a great option in those scenarios.
For example, if someone punches/shoves you, and you retaliate by shooting them, that would be illegal in CA because you escalated to use of deadly force, despite it being in self-defense.

There may be a time when the threat has not yet or never reaches the level of death or great bodily harm but you do not want to receive minor bodily harm or run the risk of it escalating to great harm. If you shoot someone because they were slapping you up because they thought you scratched their car in a parking lot. As for use against dogs self defense spray is more powerful than bear spray. I used some spray on a dog about 25 years ago. It worked great, good thing because back then all I had was a fog type and it got me almost as well as the dog. We were both incapacitated. Your goal under any self defense scenario is to get out of that scenario. Use it and get out of there. Call the police and say what happened and again DONT STAY IN THAT AREA if they want to talk to you say you don't feel safe where you are and are headed to destination if they want to talk.

Another thing you can do about dogs is give them a firm no. The average dog knows what that means, and I’ve told a handful of loose dogs while walking my own “no” and avoided an escalation of the encounter.

As an NRA instructor, I teach don't carry a firearm UNLESS you have some OC spray! Many reasons have been given but another one is to illustrate to a District Attorney that you are not some vigilante with a gun but a responsible citizen trying to protect yourself. The hope is that the OC spray will prevent you from having to go to the gun. Learned more on this subject from Chuck Haggard than everywhere else put together!

A proper OC spray in correct context can save a lot of trouble. However, one major objection here. It is plain wrong to categorically say OC sprays are effective against dogs. I have personally witnessed a German Shepherd laugh off police OC spray and came back to attack people. A small scratch from a tiny dog is one thing. But, if you get charged by a Pitbull, you might be missing a pound or two of flesh by the time you found out whether if an OC spray worked or not.

I think that’s less of an objection and more of a call for clarification. So to be clear, I’m not saying oc spray is going to work on every dog, just as I’m also not saying oc spray will work on every human. When I said, “oc spray can and does work against dogs” my intention was not to communicate that dogs can’t fight past it, but to say that it can work on dogs.

@@tessahbooth On a related note, the only thing, other than a gun, that had an immediate effect on dogs with some drgree of dependability from what I have seen is are fire extinguishers.

I guess maybe some dogs might no respond to OC but I've seen many dogs been dosed and have still to find one that did not react... yeah some do react more than others, but in my experience they all just HATE it!
Don't know, maybe you can train a dog to truck through? But again, I think that would be quite some training.

Agree 100% that dogs HATE pepper spray. In fact my "OC use-case" is built around aggressive stray/feral dogs (a real concern in my little corner of paradise...). I've seen it work all the time and that's why I carry one. SABER Red, by the way because that's what's available over here. Particularly when I'm out and about with my own dogs for a walk with my family... And yes, absolutely feral dogs come fast and they come low; and as far as I'm concerned they would be more like shotgun targets if at all, maybe. But usually they are fairly easily deterred by OC. Once the underling of the pack sent to test the target gets dosed, the pack usually go find better things to do instead of pressing the issue.
On humans I don't know, but I tend to think that not so much, really. I've seen a number of cases where perps did truck through and maimed their intended victims, or had to be shot in order for the incident to be done with. In fact I even went to a class some years ago where we where lavishly dosed with OC, and then required to accomplish a task in order to graduate. Most of us graduated. It was NOT fun, not even remotely, and I don't think I'll be joining another such class anytime soon, but definitively doable. So yeah... Dogs? a 100% (ok, nothing is a 100%... but it's really high up there). Perps? It depends on the perp I guess... great info!

It's a really bad idea to carry OC spray with a gun in my opinion. I strongly suggest that people don't take her advice as well as others in this consideration.
