    One of my favorite things about Mikey is how unpredictable he is in a fight. He’ll goof around, but when he’s locked in, he’s an unstoppable fighter. I think in the 2012 series, Mikey starts to grow up a bit around season 3 instead of being the dumb one.

      Same here, I showed the panel but in the IDW Comics w Mikey surprising Shredder its just so perfect. Mikey def gets better as 2012 goes on, I just rewatched S1 while I was writing this so that was in the forefront of my mind.

      This isn't even disputed by anyone who pays attention. In multiple incarnations of the franchise Splinter has outright stated that Mikey has the most potential of all of them - it's why he gave Mikey the nunchaku in fact. Mikey is only held back by himself, as his inability to focus and dedicate himself to the art leaves him less well trained than his brothers. Multiple incarnations of the franchise also show Mikey as being the only brother to survive to the foot wars, which is how we end up with the Last Ronin, for example. And a Mikey who stops joking around and becomes focused on the mission is a scary thing to behold.

    Mikey is definitely the heart of the team, giving his fun and friendly personality, which is why I feel bad for the 2012 version cause he gets treated poorly by everyone. Despite the fact that most of the time he's the last one standing with most of their enemies, but of course the others treat his victories as flukes or dumb luck.

    Mikey's definitely the most mature out of the Turtle brothers. He doesn't let his temper boil over like Raph. He's not overly serious and a straight-up tryhard like Leo. And he isn't out-of-touch with reality like Donnie. He might be considered the bubbliest out of the four, but he knows better than to let his emotions and impulses get the best of his morals. He treated Leatherhead with love and respect when the people who were supposed to protect the big guy shunned him and treated him like a monster. His sympathy and genuine love for others triumphs everytime. When someone needs help, he pushes his personal biases aside and actually does what he can. His older brothers should be ashamed that the supposed dumb, younger brother has more compassion than they do.

      this is a really good take that I love, hes the most grounded of the four. I think Mikey's fault is being too trusting and not thinking ahead and knowing not everyone is as good natured as he is. Helping Leatherhead was a good cause, but also in 2012 it was a bit dumb to bring him into the lair given how little the turtles knew abt him. But there's a good scene in 2003 where Mikey sticks up for Leo and says that its BECAUSE Leo takes all the responsibility for the four that he is able to goof off, and that DOnnie and Raph can be in their own world sometime. He is 100% the most aware about himself and his brothers.

    I like the Mikeys in each incarnation, but the 2012 one was challenging to watch without him being the punching bag whenever he’s around. It just hits close to home for me that I would rather not relive it on television.
    Still, what I like about Mikey is that it shows where you can be talented and have fun at your passion and abilities at the same time. Something that can be relevant at this generation where passion and fun had to be sacrificed or compromised to survive.
    Which is technically what happened to him whenever he was the last turtle standing, such as in Last Ronin and Same As It Never Was…

    I want to point something else in season four the episode the journey in Mikey’s mind (or something like that name)You see Mikey’s anger is bigger than the rest of his emotions symboling that he could be bottling part of what he truly feels.
    Now throughout the show you can see him frustrated but never truly angry.While his brothers they each get like an episode where it shows them actually angry and have a moment.While Mikey at the end of that episode he is angry but it more a funny gag if you ask me. I really wanted just an episode where he isn’t just a goofy turtle,something where it shows his true potential and he kinda snaps in a way.

    I think you kind'a inadvertently hit on my biggest issue with TMNT 2012. I love the series, I love all the designs. Probably my favorite version of Splinter, easy. I love how the turtles look, with their oversized shells and their stumpy limbs. What always holds it back for me, however, is the relationship between the brothers. We see glimpses of the fact they really do love each other - during the invasion and escape into the country they all really came together and comfort each other - but too frequently they're too antagonistic towards each other, especially Mikey, though Donny get's it a lot too. Sometimes their behavior borders on bullying. This was not something we saw in versions before or since. Sure his brothers would tease him sometimes in 2003, but they always knew where the line was, and they always apologized and admitted they were wrong when Mikey played the hero.

    • @jacesjest
      @jacesjest  4 дня назад

      I fully agree, I didn't mention specific examples bc im saving in depth thoughts for the day I wanna talk about 2012 as a whole but there is an episode where Raph and Leo are labeled the A Team and make fun of Donnie and Mikey by calling them the B Team, and the show validated that! Mikey and Donnie mess up and NEED Leo and Raph at the end. It leans into Mikey and Donnie being the "B Team", I don't need Raph praising Mikey, but I wish the show was written in a way where it could highlight Mikey and Donnie's strenghts without having them RELY on the other two.

  • @AdaHazard

    I know you weren’t really putting down 2012 Mikey but it’s definitely implied that he exaggerates his own obliviousness. Similarly to how rise Mikey does, both for the sake of their brothers morale. They both *are* silly and sometimes oblivious yes, but when they’re alone they show infinitely more discipline and common sense. They both remain the cheerful, unbothered baby brother to make the team feel better. However… Rise Mikey lets himself be the baby brother the others can protect/impress and teach for the team morale… 12 Mikey lets himself be the baby brother the others can protect/impress/teach/put down/punch/kick/slap/humiliate/insult… so perhaps the role isn’t *exactly* the same… you get my drift. Rise Mikey is smarter than his brothers recognize, 12 Mikey is smarter than even he recognizes. P: Both downplay their own competence to make their brothers feel powerful.

      @jacesjest  29 дней назад +3

      I think that that is a really good point that I did overlook on rewatching 2012, I’m still not a fan of how the show treats him but it is interesting to think that Mikey is kinda playing heavily into it just to lighten the mood and to not make things so sour and serious

    • @AdaHazard
      @AdaHazard 29 дней назад +3

      @@jacesjest Oh, don't get me wrong, I absolutely hate how 2012 Mikey gets treated, and even these small hints of his victories or happiness only ever seem like... favors from the writers, sometimes. It really feels like the writers almost just wanted to punish Mikey for being a silly, optimistic archetype. Maybe because of the edgier time of cartoons in 2012? That being said. I'm not a huge fan of how the 2012 show treats any of the turtles of their brotherhood that much. Like you mentioned in this video, it's... mostly all about Leo, when it comes to what feels like real affection from the writers, but even he doesn't get much of a break in interactions between the brothers. No doubt that Mikey just gets the absolute worst end of everything though. It gets heartbreaking to watch. =/
      But yeah! I guess to sum up everything I guess I was saying: it feels very much like 2012 Mikey has accepted his role as 'in charge of team morale' even with, in his case, it means letting himself be their punching bag, letting them show him up, put him down, never fighting back when they harass him.
      Sometimes it feels like Rise was totally overcompensating for this behavior from the 2012 boys. 😂 Can't say I don't love that from them though! And while I think Rise Mikey takes on a similar role, he clearly respects himself, and even that role, infinitely more.
      Basically, it seems very much to me like 2012 Mikey thinks he's not as good as everyone else, and being the morale (and punching bag) guy is the only thing he can do that is special. Rise Mikey seems to know he's as good as anyone, but knows that he's the only one who can keep morale up as well as he can, and respects his own role much more, and knows how necessary it is, if that makes sense. He knows his value while 2012 Mikey definitely doesn't.
      I will also admit, despite how much of a bone to pick I have with the show - by the end of the 2012 series, as much as the plot gets wild, it does feel like they settle a lot more as a team and just stop fighting each other, get into a better groove, much more grown up. It's just so damn late in the series. Some of my absolute favorite moments from the back-end of 2012 are multiple instances when some villains get a bit distracted and Leo and Mikey just smirk at each other, both silently agreeing that Mikey's gonna stand there and mess with the villains' heads while Leo sneaks off to do a task. It's really cool to see them in sync like that, it's just way too late for sure.
      Anyway, really, I love this orange turtle too, sooo so much. I really appreciate this video.

      @@AdaHazard this was a very good read because I agree with you wholeheartedly and it's so nice to see osmoene else able to put it into words how I feel about how I think 2012 as a show treats Mikey. I do fully agree that 2012 Mikey doubts himself and his abilities while Rise's doesnt which makes the world of difference in them. I think the beat down on Mikey is more of a side effect of Nickelodeon and needing a dumb character thats fun to make fun of but not serve much else, one of those quirks that get excused because its a cartoon. Like Raph physically beating up on Mikey, I wouldn't call that abusive because it's a cartoon and shit gets played up, but also the show IS depicting Mikey in a way where he is being consistently mistreated by his brothers. Wether its for jokes, or using a term like abused is over playing it, the effect is still real and felt on me as a viewer.

    • @AdaHazard
      @AdaHazard 26 дней назад

      @@jacesjestAgreed, while the pain 2012 Mikey endures at the hands of his family is awful to witness, and I love seeing it explored on fic, it’s clear in the narrative of the show it’s not meant to be abusive. I think it’s distasteful and mean, but the brothers are victims to those ‘jokes’ too on both giving and sometimes receiving too. To call it abusive would mean the way they all treat each other is, and especially back to Splinter at the center… which.. may be true AHEM… 😅 But yeah…. I do think Mikey purposefully being a clown and (at least sometimes) downplaying his intelligence for his brothers happiness is intentional, like Leo’s forced stoicism, Raph’s determined confidence in their skills, Donnie’s unwavering ‘I have an answer for everything’ intelligence. I think those intentions for each are purposeful in the actual writing. But I don’t think the nastiness with which they treat each other means anything. Just really awful, hard-to-watch jokes. But, y’know, they basically started walking the surface world as child soldiers. I wouldn’t expect them to be well-adjusted! 😂

    My favorite iteration of Mikey is 2012 & honestly, I don't think he's as big of a moron as the show paints him to be. He's got intelligence, it's just hidden in that cluttered brain of his & takes work to access it. He's pulled through when it comes to having to use his brain before like when Donnie was temporarily dumb, maybe somewhere inside he knew what he needed for the formula but due to him being well, him, it translated into pepperoni. Also, can't forget his time in Dimension X, without his brothers holding him back, he was free to learn the way that works for him & figure out the lay of the land. I hate ragging on the other 2012 turtles, they're all solid, but they do hold Mikey back a bit.
    He's shown genuine curiosity with how he gets into Donnie's things in his lab, he wants to learn how it works but the way he does that is by messing around & fiddling with it of which Donnie denies him. Fair, there's dangerous chemicals in there. Easy solution is for Donnie to give Mikey things that's safe for him to handle & let him learn from there. I don't blame Donnie for not thinking to do that, he's a teenager, he sees it as his brother being annoying & messing with his things so of course he's going to get angry & kick him out.
    The 2012 dynamic is messy yet it makes sense, they do feel like genuine siblings a lot of the time, just kinda wish the writers didn't present Mikey as much of an idiot as the audience sees him as because like I mentioned, he is smart, he's just lacking in focus, has cluttered thoughts, & has childish tendencies. The way he's accessed the information in his mind also has made him appear dumb to the audience (when he had actual genius moments) such as how he made a better retromutagen. He found it through playing a game with Ice Cream Kitty. That's just one of the methods he uses for accessing the information in his head, goofing around & having fun.
    Honestly, I think Mikey is the second smartest of the 2012 turtles, it's just really hard to see & with Donnie there, he doesn't need to really use his brain as often so it's just another reason he appears to be dumb. Don't be arguing his lack of focus, I'm the same way. I end up needing things repeated to me all the time because my inner thoughts are so loud that other things in the world just get tuned out. If anything, Mikey just needs an anchor to allow his focus to be there so he can be present for when things are explained. For me, that's either shiny hunting in Pokemon or just keeping my hands busy with a stress ball or other thing I keep on my desk I'll fiddle with when I need to pay attention.

      I completely agree, but in the sense that he improves as the show goes on. We see more of his focus, his talent, and etc as the show goes on but getting invested and seeing the relationship started hurts watching and rewatching because it feels like the show (mostly in s1) beats down on him. I wouldn't mind Raph's consistent exaggerated cartoon violence if it didnt seem like early on the show agreed that mikey deserved it yknow? I do agree Mikey just needs an avenue to channel his fidget-ing, everyone yelling at him to stop but not giving him anything to do doesn't help. But like you said, his brothers are also teenagers.

    Michelangelo may be a party dude… but deep down, he’s the heart & soul of the team.
    Edit: In my defense of the 2012 version of Mikey, he’s sorta written like the DCAU Flash. That being the kind hearted guy who acts like a goofball. That said… I can see why most fans find Mikey being the butt of the joke in the early seasons of the 12 series very tiresome.

  • @Icegaze88

    Mikey is overall my 3rd favorite turtle, behind Leo and Raph but ahead of Donnie.
    In the 2k3 series, Mikey is actually my 2nd favorite turtle. By far my favorite adaptation of Michelangelo.
    The IDW comics are my favorite TMNT iteration but unfortunately there Mikey is my least favorite turtle. Not because I think he was bad but because Donnie was surprisingly effective and relatable in that one, more so than usual for me.

      2003's Mikey is my favorite Mikey aswell. Oh I agree, IDW Donnie really shines as being important, crucial, and very different from his brothers and it's really good to read and see. I disagree with your rankings but I see your reasonings lmao :D

    I love Mikey I feel like I can usually relate to him somewhat (also I just love ENFP’s) he also usually has ADHD (which I love). In the 2003 I don’t really know a whole lot more than “he’s an annoying little brother” but I haven’t really watched a whole lot 2003. 2012 Mikey deserves so much better he is simultaneously my favorite and least favorite part of 2012 because I love him as a character but the way that the other characters and the writers treat him makes me really mad, between constantly calling him stupid and underestimating and chalking all of the times he saves the day, up to luck also it feels like they infantilaze him (also that one part where he’s like I’ll never fall in love and then as soon as he meets tenet a couple minutes later he falls in love and starts acting really out of character, it makes me so mad) but I digress. Rise Mikey is really great because he is the most emotional intelligent and open (there’s a video about him being the glue of the family that keeps them all together, it’s by the same person who did the inferiority complex Leo video) but a lot of his character is in like subtext cause they didn’t get to finish rise :((. But IDW Mikey is the best Mikey because he takes the best parts of some of the other mikeys(emotional intelligence, humor, wanting to help others, lovable little bro etc.), gets a lot of focus put on his story (it’s honestly one of my favorite parts of the story, even if I find it stressful) I think having him stand up for him self and leave was such I good decision and similar things should happen in other versions. MM Mikey I think has a lot of potential and is kind of reminding me of IDW Mikey a bit (which is very good) and I like his doubting of his place in the team (like rise Leo who is so well written) so I can see good things in the future of Mikey’s story so long as they stay on this path (or I guess a better unexpected path). Anyway thank you for taking the time to read this have a lovely day!

      Oh I love Skulltrots videos, I fully agree with ur 2012 analysis and abt him being the best and worst parts of the show. I definitely picked up on them infantizing him a bit too much for my liking. The IDW Mikey has gotta be my favorite one, I love how willing he is to stand in between his brothers and call them out to diffuse a situation so it doesnt end up in a screaming match. Him also being the main one to call splinter out is amazing, and I loved early on his friendship with the Pizza guy. He feels a lot more balanced and not overexaggerated like some versions of him

    Mikey is my favorite turtle in some iterations, in Rise and 2012 he’s my favorite (usually it’s either Leo or Donnie who are my favorite. Nothing against raph, i love him, he’s just not my favorite…i love all the turtles regardless)
    2003: Leo and don
    2012: Mikey and Leo
    Rise: Donnie and Mikey.
    Here’s some things i relate to Mikey with. I’m easily trusting of others, i have trouble seeing red flags. I can be naive. I’m very creative and artistic (this is mostly a relation to rise). I’m pretty good at going with the flow (Mostly), and I can improvise pretty decently too. I’m also the youngest of two sisters. And I potentially have a bit of ADHD (it’s not cannon, but many fans headcannon Mikey as having ADHD)

    • @jacesjest
      @jacesjest  26 дней назад

      Same, I'm not the biggest on Raph and im a huge Leo fan and Donnie appreciator. I honestly think my like for Mikey is more akin to he's has the type of personality I want and or would want to be friends with rather than the type of person I am (I think I'm more like Donnie honestly). He's super empathetic, caring, go with the flow. Funny, easy to be around and lifts up the mood but can get serious. As a creative too, it's nice seeing that part of myself expressed so differently, I am also the youngest so a bit of that thrown in there as well. I do think 2012 Mikey was semi-confirmed to have ADHD in a fact book or something I saw which is awesome
