    I just sold my OLED and might pick up a cheap used LCD model again, or something else that's cheaper. I drive for a living and like to take a handheld with me for breaks, and I just didn't feel comfortable having a $650 device in my car, in addition to my phone. That's a big score for a thief, and I'm not made of money. The OLED screen is nice and all but I found that I got used to it, just like anything else. After a while I didn't really notice it anymore. I think as humans we always want more--that next best thing--but the LCD model is still incredible and plays all the same games. Hell, you still can't buy one in a number of countries.

      Than you brother, I appreciate this review. I will mainly game on my PC and you are right the LCD is perfect for portable gaming and not too expensive. The PS Vita had great graphics and the LCD Steam Deck is so much better than that. On average how many hours on a full charge do you get brother?

    • @pixelmentia
      @pixelmentia 6 месяцев назад +4

      @@CLstreams No problem, man! With the LCD you're looking at around an hour and 45 mins with a newer AAA title. With less intensive games you're going to get way more, all the way up to 8 or 9 hours depending on the title.

      I got the refurbished 256gb LCD for $320 from Valve to replace my stolen 512gb LCD. That's the sweet spot. It's not so expensive that I'm too nervous to take it out and about. I could upgrade the SSD but I just popped a 256gb Amazon Basics SD card in there that was ~$20 on sale and it runs games like GTA 4 off of the SD card perfectly and runs at 60 FPS with settings on High (water quality might be medium) and draw distance at 68. I spend a lot of time at the hospital, sitting for chemo and doctors appointments. It's ideal for hospital stays or waiting around at the hospital. For about $350 it's a serious value. It's ideal for playing stuff like Titanfall 2, GTA 4, Skyrim and so on without killing the battery too quickly. It runs Cyberpunk and RDR2 great too but those will drain the battery a bit faster. Emulation is fantastic with Emudeck since you can play anything from Gameboy up to Switch and running PS2 or Xbox emulation with upscaling is amazing and stretches the battery live out. With a $50 65w power brick you can recharge it on the go or even a cheaper 2a charger to slowly charge it in your bag when you aren't using it. It's awesome for anyone with kids. My buddy had twins recently and he thought he would barely ever game again but now he can play when they're sleeping/laying/playing next to him or he can hop into a game from sleep mode instantly at anytime to catch a quick 20 minute game when the babies are napping. I would love the OLED model but it really isn't worth the upgrade to me right now. Plus cancer is VERY expensive to deal with and the Legion Go or Ally X are my dream handhelds but medical bills have crushed me now with my second round I'm dealing with.

    You forgot to mention that the Oled new wifi has built in wake function for bluetooth while the LCD model doesn't have that feature but only restricted to the Steam controller. One advantage of the LCD version is that you can overclock the screen to 70hz and lock the fps to 35. It's more smoother than 30 and way better than 40 fps thats constantly dropping.
    I guest you can't lock the oled to 35 fps

  • @Orain88
    @Orain88 7 месяцев назад +8

    2 little technical details that were easy to miss(even valve didn't emphasize them in their marketing) the Oled version got a modest ram upgrade over the lcd. The lcd has ddr5 5500 MT/s ram and the Oled has 6400 MT/s ram. This isn't massive but it can make a noticeable difference in certain games, it seems like it helped more with frametime consistency than anything else, although some games get a few extra fps as well.
    The other thing is even more technical, they apu got a die shrink from 7nm to 6nm making it more energy efficient. The shift to oled along with the larger battery and especially the die shrink all combined to make that hugely noticeable difference in battery life and improved thermals.
    The oled is 100% worth the upgrade if you are a fan of the platform. The 90hz display allows for such a wide array of fps capping options and the hdr oled implementation looks fantastic. Solid review 👍

    Nice analysis. I've had the LCD for about a year now. I use it at home alot but with a portable monitor mostly or handheld when watching TV. I've only traveled with it on the plane twice during this time. I use it also when I'm waiting for my mom at the hospital and such or at some restaurant. I don't really feel a rush to upgrade just yet unless I will have to travel frequently and being on the outside more (bus rides, trains, long trips, etc) which then I will need a better screen.

    Something I thought of with my LCD, was if I have an issue, most parts are easily replaced. Same can be said with the OLED display. If it ever burned in, replacing it with a new display would be relatively easy. It's currently not possible to replace the LCD with an OLED. So there's that debate bunked. My deck is my primary gaming console. I have a PC and play on there too, but often, when my wife comes home from work (I work too, but tend to be home first), I just shut down the PC and grab the Deck. For that reason, If I were to play a 5hr gaming session in a day (a great day!) the Deck would have clocked about 4 of those 5 hours. So, yeah, the OLED would be worth it, as well as the battery life, which is a huge plus, since I take my Deck on the road with me.
