My x husband is from Iran, so in 1997 we went to Iran to visit his family and his parents could meet their grandchildren. My kids were so excited when we ordered a pizza in a restaurant. When it arrived at our table it ended up being half a pita bread with ketchup and sliced hotdogs. I don’t think there was even cheese on it. Well that didn’t go over so well with the kids, lol. I took a bite and understood why the kids wouldn’t eat it.

I have a Filipino friend that's always telling me about how great banana ketchup is. I'd try it but it sounds very strange to me

It's a bit sweeter even than US ketchup, and the texture tends to be a bit more viscous, a bit thicker. I keep a bottle of Jufran hot-and-spicy banana sauce handy for when I get the craving for Filipino spaghetti (a sweet version of spaghetti bolognese that includes sliced hot dogs and a quick-melting shredded cheese in addition to the ground beef). It also pairs really well with salty fries, potato wedges, etc.
I never liked banana ketchup. It's too sweet for me, and I actually like sweet food usually
it also goes better with different food than ketchup goes with. i can think of like, fried pork (lechon) goes with it, lumpia shanghai, and of course, in our spaghetti

Great to see Townsend's on here! Side note: I worked as a waitress at Claim Jumper long ago, and the d=side work included washing the damn ketchup bottle caps in hot water while refilling all the bottles. A real pain!
My favorite thing that Heinz did when their product in clear glass bottles started taking off - competitors selling dubious versions tried to copy him by using clear glass bottles - So Heinz bought every single glass bottle that could be found for a large area round the city and what he couldnt store or use right away he literally sunk in the harbor.

lol typical. Can't just rely on your superior product, you have to destroy and/or buy out the competition. That's basically the difference between a successful small-medium business vs a giant corporation. And they only slightly hinted at regulatory capture in this vid, but that's often a factor as well.

My mom use to prepare homemade ketchup with us. I believe it is not as full of sugar as commercial ketchups. We also add apples inside and we also use to put it on pizza. It is not as smooth as ketchup from shop but it feels more trustworthy. It´s also from home-grown tomatoes, there are so good from sun and stuff. Try do it by yourselves it is not that hard(only special thing you need is some special stainer but maybe you can use regular one, but dense), I can give you preparation receipt if you want.

The word ketchup in our local language (kecap) means something similar to soy sauce, fish sauce, a mutant of the two, or something else entirely. It can be salty, savory, or sweet and sometimes bit spicy depending on which brand you buy. The English word "ketchup" roughly translates to "tomato sauce" here.
Correction: Tomatoes are native to South America. They grew in the Andes(specifically in Peru, Bolivia and Chile)

Correction: Thai cuisines does NOT use ketchup for cooking. The video that's being used is literally titled "and ketchup substitute" which I assume, is using ketchup in place of tamarind paste used in Pad Thai.

I once made a recipe for chili, out of a nostalgia themed cookbook, that was essentially just ground beef and ketchup. I thought it would be distastefully sweet and vinegary, but its real sin was just being surprisingly BLAND. The simple addition of chili powder would have actually made it pretty palatable.
The Heinz ruffled ketchup chips are the best!

If no one has tried Del Monte ketchup compared to others, you don't know what you're missing! It's not as sweet, I actually quit eating french fries with ketchup because it was to sweet. My grandma was a strict Del Monte ketchup fan, and she converted me! If you get a chance, try it out! Unfortunately, I only have 1 store that is close to me that sells it, but it's always in stock! Del Monte doesn't have the glass bottles, the glass bottles really suck lol, they are very frustrating!

Yeah, the more modern squeeze bottles were created because of how frustrating trying to get ketchup out of the glass bottles can be.
I use Hunts for sandwiches, onion rings and I rarely eat fries 🍟 but I do make my own dipping sauce for chicken strips and nuggets

i'm a 50 year old Canadian who cooked for 20 years and have NEVER even heard of ketchup cake. on the other hand, ketchup chips are fantastic.
Bit sad that glass bottles have gone nearly extinct.

Most of us love Ketchup. But what I'm most interested in is making something similar myself.
Obviously anything homemade is never going to be American ketchup, but I think with the right blend of tomatoes and salt/spices, you would have something amazing. Especially fresh.
Poland is obsessed with ketchup. They make a flavor of ketchup for everything, including "Pizza Ketchup". Where an American might use picante sauce for burritos, they use picante ketchup, or chipotle ketchup.

Potato chips with ketchup flavour are also a thing in Germany/Austria (don't know about the rest of Europe). And don't forget the wild 90s with swirled ketchup+mayo, and purple ketchup!
We have ketchup flavoured chips in Canada but the ketchup cake.... I never encountered that yet
Ketchup flavored chips are also popular in South America, at least here in Argentina there're ketchup flavored Lay's and other brands

I recently discovered the ketchup chips an a European road trip, and it’s probably a good idea they’re not more readily accessible to me because they are so good!

I would recommend fries with mustard. Maybe with some honeymustard they would be even better but I tried them with classic one and they are nice. I work in fast food restaurant and I managed to sell it three times during two years :D :D

Yes! In Poland we have zapienkanki, which is street food but not too unlike a pizza. It starts with a bread, sort of a baugette, topped with sauteed mushrooms, cheese, and ketchup.

I'm a weirdo apparently who has never enjoyed ketchup, but was always smitten with its cousin, BBQ sauce. I know I'm not alone coz I've met many others like me, I just find it fascinating how odd and different taste buds can be from person to person haha

I like ketchup, but not like most people. Some people need it with their fries. I don't at all. Salt is usually enough for me. I like other things to dip them in as well. I never really got the fascination with ketchup. I guess it's the high sugar content that hooks people without them knowing it. They don't think of the sweetness, but that's their crack.
I hate ketchup and BBQ sauce both. Nor do I like mustard or mayonnaise or any other condiment except for salt. I won't eat anthing with tomato including spaghetti sauce. I hate pizza also. So you're definitely NOT a weirdo. I've never met anyone pickier than me.

I use ketchup as the base for cheeseburger pizza. Use it in place of tomato/pizza sauce and you’ll get a much better flavor

The name is most probably derived from the Indonesian sweetened soy sauce 'kecap', which is a great main condiment. But I am very glad for the tomato based evolution, it is good on just about everything.
In Mexico ketchup/catsup tastes way better because is made with pure cane sugar not corn syrup and it has an almost transparent texture . Coke also tastes better for the same reason

Real sugar ketchup and coke is available in the US. Costs a few cents more. Only poor people suck down corn syrup laden products.

All common ingredients in ketchup, along with tomato, sugar and vinegar.

I lived in Collinsville for almost 25 years and not once did I actually see the Brooks brand of "catsup" that was on the water tower.
It was gonna be torn down for a while too due to age and funds but in the end the city raises enough to refurbish it and start selling t-shirts in a shop at the base :P

Miracle Whip is horrible. When my dad got remarried, my step-mother always had that instead of real mayonaisse. To this day, despite having the money to buy mayo, she still has it in her fridge.

@@williamromine5715 I’m a Miracle Whip gal. It’s sweeter than mayonnaise and gives sandwiches a better taste than regular mayonnaise. I can do mayonnaise but I will always go with Miracle Whip over regular mayonnaise anyday.

That Ed Sheeran and Heinz ketchup commercial is brilliant, he actually reached out to Heinz to do that commercial which he really does take a bottle of Heinz ketchup when he goes out to eat at restaurants, I love him more for that, I too have packets of Heinz in a ziploc in my purse....LOL! 🍅😁
Ironically, just hearing from you about that, I have one more thing that I don't like about him.
I remember a scene in an old tv show (might have been a sitcom) where a character said something like, "Ketchup is the only food. Everything else is just a vehicle for it." I felt that. I've backed off my ketchup addiction quite a lot since then, but I still do love ketchup on many things.
I’ve never understood why some people find it hard to use the glass bottle. My grandma always told me to just hit the 57, it works every time! I’ve always liked the retro aesthetic of glass Heinz bottles.
It's not necessarily hard, it's just harder. And with a glass bottle you get big blobs out, sometimes much more than you want, most often more than you wanted where it landed, and then you have to undo the damage with utensils. It takes longer. If your one hand is greasy, you will get grease on the bottle. With a plastic bottle you get perfect dosages and don't have to rearrange what came out post application. You can make patterns, even draw a little smiley face on your loved one's omelet. If they phase out the plastic bottles (which is likely), I'd prefer they put it in a jar like mayo.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't think one other presidential reference was cited: Catchup was classified as a vegetable during the Reagan administration.
Europeans used to think that tomatoes were poisonous because wealthy Europeans would eat them on pewter plates which were high in lead and mixed with the acidic tomatoes made for a potentially fatal snack.

Speaking of things that go with ketchup, when you do another fast food video, please let it be Jack In The Box! The restaurant has an interesting past, they even had their own set of characters in the 70s, and there's even a Jack In The Box WIKI [to be fair Mcdonald's has one too]. Howard Johnson's would be a cool video too, considering it originally started as a shop. Had they put drive thrus at their restaurants, they might've lasted longer.

growing up, my best friend would have a grilled cheese with soo much ketchup he used a plate to hold the amount of ketchup. There was literally more ketchup then the sandwich it self... NOt to mention his next fav ,, mayo on bread. Used mayo like butter.

I can't remember what brand but I remember having a bottle of CATSUP in the fridge in late 70s It's also referenced in an early Simpsons episode suggesting at least one brand kept the spelling in to the early 90s
Im a Hunts Ketchup man myself. Provides a much less "vinegar-y" taste than Heinz and is a little more sweet. Try it, it might change your life.
Fun fact: You do not put ketchup on hotdogs in Chicago. We prefer the relish, onion, seasoned salt, mustard, FRESH tomatoes, and peppers.
Ketchup is great for a quick sauce when cooking beans. No idea this is kind of how it was originally used.
Possibly that some Cowboy recipes had tomato sauce in their beans, like Pork ‘n’ Beans today.
That's true, it's actually a great way to super quickly make a tasty meal from just a can of beans. Throw in a stock cube and some spices. Make sure to keep the liquid in the beans can, it has flavor to it. 👌

Vinegar is a weak acid and tomatoes are slightly acidic as well. The fact that acids remove tarnish from metals is no surprise.
