Fun facts about this album Michael Jackson once said the Knowledge is his favorite song by his sister Janet Love Will Never Do Without You was initially intended to feature Prince
You Need Me is actually her dragging her father, not talking about a guy. The original concept of this album was going to be focused on family, continuing the theme of Control but Janet went in a different direction.
One of my favorites from her. Yes it sounds like miss you much and escapade because that’s continuity in an album. Also, this was the first time she was teasing us with her sexy side.
i dont like it too as much as i hate Escapade, Alright, Come Back To Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So glad you took the time to listen to my all-time favorite 'pop' album. Rhythm Nation is a masterpiece, in part because it accomplishes something that so many artists try and fail to do... discuss heavy subjects in such a way that they make you think about the issues and it leaves an impression, but you can still feel it as music too. The thinking, serious side of our brain rides right along with the feeling, grooving side. And I totally agree... the fact that in both sonic and subject matter that this album feels like it has barely aged in 2021 is astounding. Janet, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are music masters and this album shows that well. I will say, the videos are an important piece of this project too (Janet always refers to her album cycles as 'projects' because she really considers the music as a component to music videos, choreography and live tour). The Long-Form Rhythm Nation video won Janet her first Grammy award, and it is an incredible piece of art still today. I'm also especially fond of the Alright video... basically Janet got a bunch of legendary entertainers from the 40s and 50s and put them together in that video... a crazy cool historical record.
I understand that music videos are not your favorite. However, this album in particular requires the watching of the music videos to understand the full Janet experience. You are missing a huge component of the album if you don't watch the videos. The songs and the videos can stand on their own but together, they are amazing.
@@egoriysemenov That would be your humble opinion. Mine is Janet does an excellent job of setting up an industrial Dystopian world here. She also does an excellent job of championing for change and a better future within it. The Rhythm Nation Is her collective "Army"of followers that she is leading to a brighter future. It is political and still very relevant even today. The sounds and production values are fantastic. her vocals are fantastic, and the album is cohesive and stays on theme. For me personally, any artistic media that actually has something to say and a reason for being is a winner.
I was 19yrs old when this was released and it was an amazing time watch the world respond to it. Love Will Never Do was the beginning of her coming out of her shell. Much love to JJ.
This was a masterpiece but Janet was always overshadowed in the Grammys by Whitney. And that’s sad because while Whitney is quite a force vocally and pop culture wise, Janet came out with quite a message. She should have won so much just for this album.
Janet was the first woman to be nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys (she has a production credit). She also gets writing credit for most of songs, since she either co-wrote (with Jam and Lewis) or wrote (Black Cat) each of her hits. It's not easy easy to land a platinum selling pop album with a "message", and not one that's hidden. Many artists have tried and failed, coming off as preachy or out-of-touch.
Check out the video for "Love Will Never Do Without You". It was the 7th single and hit number one in 1991 (the album came out in 1989) that never happened before. The video was filmed at the end of the Rhythm Nation tour and she had slimed down and reveal her brand new frame in the video...you might have to go through the videos from this album to get it. Just my babble.
This album means so much to me. I was 11 when I first heard it (3 years after it was released) and we had to do a dance at school to Rhythm Nation so I listened to it over and over before the big performance! Fell in love with every other track. Lifelong fan ever since :)
“We are a nation with no geographic boundaries. Bound together through our beliefs. We are like minded individuals, sharing a common vision. Pushing towards a world with no color lines.”
Looks like you're including the B-sides - which is very cool. Janet broke a shit-load of records with this era. And it's a shame that her back catalog hasn't been recertified by the RIAA because this one would almost certainly be diamond status.
"Lonely" and "Someday Is Tonight" are my favorite cuts! So many happy songs on here 4 me! "Alright" "Escapade" and especially "Love Will Never Do". Her Background harmonies on "Come Back To Me" is HEAVEN!!!! Album, singles, and music videos are ICONIC....I luv Miss Jackson! When people say Janet whispers.....I have to ask Alexa to play "Black Cat"....LOL!
So jealous you got to listen to this for the first time. I'd love to go back in time and listen to this for the first time, that's how fantastic this album is! Glad you enjoyed it! BUT I will say, I hope Love Will Never Do grows on you. It grew on me too and it became one of my faves eventually. It also helped that she looked STUNNING in the video (which I know isn't your forte, but I do love her look in that video and it was the first time she showed off a little skin and got ~~sexy~~ lol). But great reaction vid!
The new story you hear in Living In a World (They Didn’t Make) was a real news story from that year. I was young but since then learned that it was real.
This album is in my top 3 of her albums, and probably will be FOREVER. The magic of the era is that she had the foresight to mix the political Rhythm Nation, The Knowledge, & State Of The World with the fun Miss You Much, Escapade & Alright & the edge with black cat & the smoothness with Come Back To Me, Lonely & Someday is tonight. Like folks could hate on the message of Rhythm Nation, but they couldn't hate on the epic pop-ness of Miss You Much or Escapade. So the story of how the album came to be, Livin In A World, was the 1st song in that vein of the political was seeing on the news the shooting that Livin In A Word mentioned, that & this song, is what made Rhythm Nation come to be. Im gon ignore the Love Will Never Do shade lol, that's 1 of her best, and that song's #1 gives her the record she keeps today of being THE ONLY Artist to have #1's from 1 album in 3 separate years (1989-Miss You Much, 1990-Escapade, 1991- Love Will Never Do). What's funny though I've NEVER heard someone say Love Will Never Do sounds like Miss You Much or Escapade lol, those were some of the 1st 3 songs recorded for the album, and Love Will Never Do is way more eclectic than the other 2, it has more moods & styles to it so that's why . I don't know if you picked up on that Someday is tonight is actually a sequel to Let's Wait A While, in that she said "I promise, I'll be worth the wait". In Someday, she says "You know I promised, I'd be worth the wait, now the wait is over baby, please don't hesitate". Also You Need Me is about her father, like if you check the lyrics its VERY much direct to him lol. Truth is Joe Jackson was a mess of a dad & disciplinarian, many of the Jacksons have said so, but Janet's the 1st to dedicate a song to the topic of Joe.
I just realized actually all of the 4 #1s of this album meant something significant actually 1. Miss you much is her 1st time her debut single for an album went #1 2. Escapade is 1 of her longest running #1s 3. Black Cat is historic, its the 1st Grammy nominated Hot 100 #1 almost entirely written & produced by the female artist singing it (its the last song recorded for the album, the album was damn near packaged & printed before it got done, and her writing & producing team was BOOKED, but she wanted a rock track for that album, the producers said she should wait till the next, Janet said "I'll do it myself", wrote all the lyrics, and teamed with a guitarist to work out what she wanted the guitar riffs & production to be but other than that she did it all herself) 4. Love Will Never Do ushered Rhythm Nations success into a 3rd year. She did not perform it on the Rhythm Nation tour and fans & peers always brought it up that that was missing, and now she hasn't done a tour without it. She wanted Someday is tonight to be the last single, but everyone in her team and among fan letters & meetings & the label urged her that Love Will Never Do is the hit....and it is.😁
The video for Love Will Never Do was a revelation. I know you've said you don't like music videos but it's worth check it out. It was when Janet was finally complete with her transformation.
I know you don’t care for videos, but the videos for “When I think Of You” and “ Love Will Never Do Without You” were a very large reason for the fact that they went to number one, perpetually played on MTV and innovative for their time
I hope you don't mind the interludes because starting with Control all of Janet's albums are very personal to her and especially starting with Rhythm Nation they're all concept albums that tell a story and the interludes are part of that.
I love the inclusion of interludes on albums! I think they give albums a stronger sense of cohesion! However, I was taking a little issue with the interludes on janet. but you can see why when that video goes live today!
Sal it's a little strange watching you react to the audio because I think the first time most of us heard these songs was when MTV premiered their videos. I just can't over state the importance of MTV and music videos to the 80's. They were completely linked. You definitely need to watch the video for "Rhythm Nation". The choreography is widely viewed as some of the most difficult in music videos. It's been replicated and is done by flash mobs all over the world. Also, the video for "Love Will Never Do" is one of the most beautifully shot (by Herb Ritts) videos. Plus it's where Janet unveiled a sexier look. The video for "Alright" is a work of art.. like an old movie musical from the 40's. This album was absolutely HUGE.
@@SalRocha Enjoying all your reaction videos! And I LOVE that you are a Paula Abdul Stan (as am I!). Please watch the Janet video collection and it will change your opinion on some of these songs! Plus if you love Paula videos, you will LOVE Janet's videography as well!
Rhythym nation and the knowledge SLAPS SO HARD till this day. Alright the album version is just soooo Fun and miss you much + escapade are Just classics. I am impressed you dont like love will never do...one of my favorites from Janet.
Such a masterpiece! Easily one of my all-time favorite albums. Literally every song could have been a single. "Miss You Much" and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" are among the best pop songs ever written. The music videos for this album are a whole nother level (well, except for "Black Cat" maybe). You should check them all out (for reaction videos). Believe me, you won't regret it. Btw...I think "Someday Is Tonight" ist more of a sequel to "Let's Wait Awhile".
Love will never do without you is pure joy and showcases the full range of her angelic girly voice. He needs to watch the video by legendary Herb Ritts. She's a visual artist which makes you enjoy the song even more.
I can’t wait to see your Janet. album reaction, that was such a turning point in her career/maturity ✨ selling 20M copies WW !! my fav albums are Janet. & Damita Jo, loving ur series
This arguably the greatest album of all time this is probably the biggest album by a female artist Janet made to much history off this album and almost every artist take so much notes from this album even her own brother took inspirations from this album Janet was ahead of the game.
Great Review! If theres a live performance of Rhythm Nation you would want to see, its the one from the Velvet Rope Tour. She goes absolutely off in that! Love will never do is a classic, you need to listen to that again and watch the video too. Its was about interracial relationship and it also sample the skin game (the trumpet melody in love will never do is the same as the skin game chorus melody)
Lol love will never do (without you) is a classic! I love that song and definitely deserved that #1 spot 😛 and the video she did for that song is very well done. RN1814 is such an awesome album. I’m glad I got to see her perform the 30 year anniversary in San Francisco back in 2019.
Fun/ interesting fact...The reason you hear janet vocal range change for the song Love Will Never Do Without You...is because when she recorded with her producers Jimmy Jam & Terry lewis...It Was Supposed to been a Duet with Janet & PRINCE!😌..But she decided not to and keep the song for herself along with the vocal arrangements..Give it a listen again and when she sings low that was suppose to be Prince part...Can You Imagine..Wow!
The thing that needs to be understood about what music videos meant in the 80s is that music videos were the new vehicle for selling your latest single and albums at that time. “Control” and “Rhythm Nation” were very much MTV albums which translates to them being visual albums. Janet along with her brother Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, and even Whitney Houston were among the top artists who innovated music videos as a medium and set the standard for the high production live shows that they put on. Because back in those days your music videos were brought to life on stage through choreography, lighting, costumes, and overall production. You have most notably Michael Jackson to thank for that. Songs like “Rhythm Nation” and “The Pleasure Principle” are very much synonymous with their music videos and no one can think of those songs without thinking of the videos. The entire “Rhythm Nation” album was intended to be a visual album. All those instrumental breakdowns you hear were practically made for intense choreographed dance routines. Once you check out the videos from this album you’ll see what I mean.
Actually she made a 30 minute short film Rhythm Nation 1814 that tells the story of a black youth who feels lost and disinfranchised that features the songs Miss You Much, The Knowledge and Rhythm Nation and the music videos for Miss You Much and Rhythm Nation are part of and taken from this short film.
I was in grade school when this album came out in the late 80s. She made a concept album that tackle social issues and a bit of a romance. I was listening to this a week ago and this perhaps an album since we're still in the midst of a pandemic, hate crimes and many other issues in the world right now. This is a perfect album to listen to.
Love Will Never Do is one of her greatest songs ever-however it is a massive grower. I remember buying the album in 89 and this was my least favourite but boy when it gets in your brain you will realise its utter brilliance!
This became her first album with alot of interludes but her 1993 album Janet have a lot of songs on that album like 28 tracks ain't no telling if she have an unreleased tracks from this album and the Janet album but I'm telling you i have this album and the Janet album lord that album so long
LOVE WILL NEVER DO is about interracial relationship. which was still very taboo back then. hence the lyrics 'our friends think we're opposites It went number 1 because Janet revealed skin as well as sex appeal for the first time in the video. BTW Someday is Tonight is a continuation of Let's Wait A While
The reason why “Miss You Much” and “Love Will Never Do” sound similar is because that were two of the first songs they were recorded for the album. If I’m not mistaking, they were made probably a day apart with the same keyboard settings. One of the producers Jimmy Jam talks about it in his interview with Kelly Alexander talking about this album.
That really makes it make a lot more sense! I was told that LWNDWY was supposed to be a duet which I think I would have loved as it would have made the song stand on it's own more in my eyes!
Love the reaction. Thanks for sharing your perspective. Being the Janet geek that I am, I would say that the video movie to "Rhythm Nation" and "If" are the 2 videos that assured us that Janet was the XFactor and not to be played with. The making of RN movie was also interesting to see her level of work ethic. She was pretty intense managing that project. Let me know if you need the link to RN. I put it as a response to your premier post.
@@dalee72 yes I recall that. I just remember watching her review herself performing the knowledge and she was so frustrated. She wanted it to be perfect.
Herb Alpert is on the saxophone, try MAKING LOVE IN THE RAIN, JANET JACKSON IS SING BACKGROUND LISA KEITH IS LEADING THE SONG AND HERB ALPERT IS ON THE SAXOPHONE.
''Livin in a World'' was inspired by a new about the murdurer in a school in march 1989 in california. After the producer ''Jam and Lewis'' hear this new, he composed the first lyrics in more a hour and ''Livin in a World (That Didn't Make)'' was the first lyrics composed. After Janet heard the lyrics, she loved it and she changed many things in the lyrics, to talk generally more about the problems of society about the childrens of the world, like the poverty, the malnutrition, the education, the drug, etc.. This is the reason why this song was so emotional and so sad.
Great video , but actually Someday is Tonight is a continuation of " Lets wait Awhile' from Control ..... Good video though. I am excited for the Janet. album reaction video... Also can we get a Spellbound album reaction video ...
This is the greatest social conscious album in history and one of the biggest most influential albums of all time and I just love the story Janet told revolving the creation of this album she was sick of all the shit going on in the world like we all are today this album was so ahead of it's time this album is so relevant today especially what's going on in the world also people forget Someday Is Tonight a sex song.
My favorite album of her. This is the only album of her that i never skipped one single song in this album. I loved how the album sound. I'm a fan of ''The Knowledge'', a very aggressive, dark and raw sound. In fact, this is the only album of history to produced seven top 5 singles in US charts: Miss You Much (n.1 for four weeks in october 1989) Rhythm Nation (n.2 behind ''Another Day in paradise'' by Phil Collins in december 1989) Escapade (n.1 for three weeks in march 1990) Alright (n.4 in june 1990) Come Back to Me (n.2 for two weeks, behind ''Vision of Love'' by Mariah Carey in august 1990) Black Cat (n.1 for one week in october 1990) Love Will Never Do (Without You) (n.1 for one week in january 1991)
@@SalRocha Yes i also say that, ''Come Back to Me'' was my favorite song of her career, a very good and haunting ballad. The three last ballads of the album was the best thing to ending a album after dancing during the album.
I hate that SOTW didn't chart but I remember it being heard on the radio stations on this month in 1991 it's about crime drugs and being homeless That groove follows Alright and yep this how she named the tour I still loved this one
State of the World was a radio only single to boost album sales. But Billboard said that it probably would’ve been the album’s eighth top ten hit had a physical single been released.
“Someday is Tonight” is actually the follow up to “Let’s Wait Awhile” - hence here saying “remember I said someday we’d be together...” at the beginning.
Since you’re a musical fan, I would recommend checking out the video for “Alright” since it features a few guests from the musical world. And is staged like a classic musical film. And yes, please watch “Love Will Never Do Without You”. Besides being one of the best singles on the album, the video makes it
This is arguably Janet most grounbreaking album of her discography this album rivals her own album The Velvet Rope in being her greatest album of all time this album still holds up and is always talked about today so many artists and fans sample this album and songs so much Lonely and Someday Is Tonight my faves this album is to grounbreaking and broke a lot of records.
Janet's videos are iconic! Let's see...you'll have to watch Rhythm Nation, Miss You Much, Pleasure Principle, If, Love Will Never Do, Alright, I Get Lonely, Together Again, Got Til It's Gone, Any Time Any Place, You Want This, All For You, Doesn't Really Matter, Someone to Call My Lover, What's It Gonna Be and That's the Way Love Goes. Also watch Feedback - that one was so influential that Doja Cat just copied it on the Grammy Awards Lol.. I didn't include Control since you said you watched some of those videos. I think if you watch all of those videos, you'll TRULY get the full picture of Janet Jackson's brilliance! She's been so influential.
Yes, Janet really kills RN live, very military motif also there’s a whole ass 30min long form video movie that goes with the album with ICONIC choreography. Britney’s chair dance in “Stronger” is 💯an homage to “Miss U Much” Check it out 😘
Janets 3 best album were Rhythm Nation, janet. and Velvet Rope. All 3 are cohesive and complete albums yet are so different. Velvet Rope is even deeper than Rhythm Nation but is in a more inner personal way. I agree that watching videos will give a better feel for realizing Janets influence on the music world. In my opinion Janets best year as a global superstar was 1993.
LIAWTDM was a down-tempo concept jem but at the same time emotional I usually get goosebumps about the shooting of the children in California but like you said it was recorded in the studio for major sound effects which really happened in real life.
Sal when Alright was released it had stiff competition hence why it only went to number 4. Vogue from Madonna was number 1. Wilson Phillips Hold On was also top 3. Also HEART'S (All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You). The music was so much better then and the Lyrics of the songs were just so strong..
You really should see if you can find the thirty-minute long-form music video, Rhythm Nation 1814. If you don't like music videos, this is more like a little musical, it has dialogue and long choreography pieces. It's so good!
Have you watched Janet's 1987 Grammy performance? I was about 23 and it was what we called a "watercooler moment" because the next day everyone was asking each other "Did you see Janet on the Grammys last night?". You should check it out if you havent already. 😊
Videos of the 80s and 90s were phenomenal. They made the songs and the era stand out. Not like today's video where its all sex. That being said check out the videos for Love Will Never Do and Black Cat also Escapade, If, Again, That's the Way Love Goes
You have to react to the Rhythm Nation and Love Will Never Do videos. They’re absolutely iconic and will probably make you love LWND. Alright and Miss You Much are next best. The others you can do without
Classic period. One of the things i like about the album overall,is that is has a very cold, industrial, ugly sound.even the happy girly songs have a brick wall Coldness (sonically)to them.and it's a nice contrast to the up with people Message of the album.
And the reason ''Miss You Much'' was the choose as her first single: Terry Lewis said in 2019 in interview the debut of the song remain of the ''Nasty'' song and also have the sound of ''Rhythm Nation 1814'' in the same song and he said also that was the perfect song to have the transition between ''Control'' and ''Rhythm Nation 1814'' without to hurting the fans of the ''Control'' album, before to released the title track as a single. THe stragedy work incredible well for ''Miis You Much''. Janet was not a superstar worldwide and it's not the time to hurt the public at the time of her fame grow up.
Lonely wow what more can I say that jem is about trust and then of course you have I get lonely from her 1997 album The Velvet Rope is about she feels alone wanting her lover back
Rhythm Nation 1814 is the only album with 7 Top 5 Billboard hits. Janet SWEPT the Billboard awards in 1990 with the most wins in one night (18). This album is about racism, police brutality, education and equality - and the critics bashed her for it. NEW JACK SWING was birthed from this album. Put more respect on this iconic album.
The Love Will Never Do (Without You) video features Antonio Sabáto jr back when he was eye popping, melt in your mouth, fire in your underpants HOT!!! Black Cat is a song about Drugs, hence "no acid, in this house". Someday Is Tonight is the follow up to Let's Wait Awhile and Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun).... Google 1814, I believe it's relevant to women's rights. Also, R is the 18th letter of the alphabet and N is the 14th letter of the alphabet. You Need Me sounds like Rhythm Nation with a different set of lyrics sung over the top.
If you decide to watch her videos from this album, watch them in order of release. It might help you to understand the appeal of "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" by the end of it. (1) Miss You Much (which stayed at #1 longer than any other song in 1989) (2) Rhythm Nation (was stuck at #2 behind the Phil Collin's megahit song about homelessness, I forget the name) (3) Escapade (went to #1) (4) Alright (went to #4) (5) Come Back to Me (all the way to #2) (6) Black Cat (went to #1) and (7) Love Will Never Do (Without You) (also went to #1) I believe Janet Jackson is the ONLY artist to have seven top 5 hits from one album. And I think this is the only album to have produce a #1 hit in three consecutive years (Miss You Much in 1989, Escapade and Black Cat in 1990, and Love Will Never Do in 1991).
Wanna hate Love will never do more? It blocked Madonna getting the mtv Video music award in 1991 for best female video lol. Rumors on one of the reasons why the beef between Madonna and Janet started.
The project that made Janet a global superstar
The album that sided neck-a-neck with Thriller.
Iconic, Innovative and Impressive
I STAN this album

The knowledge slaps! I read somewhere Micheal used to warm up his moves to that song. And this album just had super strong singles like soooo many
How sweet!!!
I’ve read that they wanted Prince to sing the first few lines of Love Will Never Do, which is why Janet sings in a lower register 😊
Idk if it was Prince but they wanted a male to do the open but they liked it will just her on it
It would have been so cool had he done that!

#ICONIC
And this album specially should be listened with the videos. They're a huuuuuge part of the concept.
:)
Looks like you're including the B-sides - which is very cool. Janet broke a shit-load of records with this era. And it's a shame that her back catalog hasn't been recertified by the RIAA because this one would almost certainly be diamond status.
Amen!
First time hearing this album in full :D Great Experience :)
Thanks for listening
I saw the State of the World tour live and it was so good. And yes, the arena went off during Rhythm Nation.
I wish I could have been there!
ALEXA, PLAY SOME OF THAT GANGSTA SHIT FROM THE 90'S SO THAT I CAN RECITE EVERY WORD REMIND MY KIDS WHO THEY'RE MESSING WITH
Her harmonies with herself are absolutely incredible! Thanks for pointing that out!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!!! LWND has grown on me now that I know it was intended to be a duet! I pretend that it is!
The new story you hear in Living In a World (They Didn’t Make) was a real news story from that year. I was young but since then learned that it was real.
So sad!
I just realized actually all of the 4 #1s of this album meant something significant actually
1. Miss you much is her 1st time her debut single for an album went #1
2. Escapade is 1 of her longest running #1s
3. Black Cat is historic, its the 1st Grammy nominated Hot 100 #1 almost entirely written & produced by the female artist singing it (its the last song recorded for the album, the album was damn near packaged & printed before it got done, and her writing & producing team was BOOKED, but she wanted a rock track for that album, the producers said she should wait till the next, Janet said "I'll do it myself", wrote all the lyrics, and teamed with a guitarist to work out what she wanted the guitar riffs & production to be but other than that she did it all herself)
4. Love Will Never Do ushered Rhythm Nations success into a 3rd year. She did not perform it on the Rhythm Nation tour and fans & peers always brought it up that that was missing, and now she hasn't done a tour without it. She wanted Someday is tonight to be the last single, but everyone in her team and among fan letters & meetings & the label urged her that Love Will Never Do is the hit....and it is.😁
Thank you so much for all the info!!!
The video for Love Will Never Do was a revelation. I know you've said you don't like music videos but it's worth check it out. It was when Janet was finally complete with her transformation.
I'll check it out! Don't worry!
I know you don’t care for videos, but the videos for “When I think Of You” and “ Love Will Never Do Without You” were a very large reason for the fact that they went to number one, perpetually played on MTV and innovative for their time
:)
When you all alone, and a friend you need. Like a river flows, you hurt I bleed.---- Yes Janet!
Queen!
If you trust in me
We can find away
Take away the pain
Time heals all things
Even a lonely state of mind
'cause happiness is oh so hard to find
@@dalee72 Yes David Yes! That song is a gem.
I love the video for Black Cat!!!
I'll check them out!
Come back to me is one of my favorite Janet songs too! Another great album review, per usual. :-)
Thanks for watching!!!
I will check out the videos soon!
Thanks for sharing!
Someday is tonight really is a sequel!!!
In order to get the full Janet experience you have to watch the videos. She, Michael are visual artists. The videos and music go hand in hand.
Okay!
Love will never do without you is pure joy and showcases the full range of her angelic girly voice. He needs to watch the video by legendary Herb Ritts. She's a visual artist which makes you enjoy the song even more.
Ok
I can’t wait to see your Janet. album reaction, that was such a turning point in her career/maturity ✨ selling 20M copies WW !! my fav albums are Janet. & Damita Jo, loving ur series
So glad your enjoying!!! Don’t forget! The janet. reaction goes live today!!!!
Awesome Reaction💯
Thank you very much!
This arguably the greatest album of all time this is probably the biggest album by a female artist Janet made to much history off this album and almost every artist take so much notes from this album even her own brother took inspirations from this album Janet was ahead of the game.
Thanks for sharing!
Come on Sal! " Love will never do " my personal Favourite. I love it!!!!
I really wish it had ended up being a duet!
There's an a capella version of The Knowledge on RUclips that REALLY showcases the intricacies in Janet's vocal layering. It's so beautiful.
I'll have to listen to that!
Cool, thanks!
1 WORD "EXCITED"
Yay!
Been listening to this a lot recently. Hope you enjoy!
Find out this Saturday!
Lol love will never do (without you) is a classic! I love that song and definitely deserved that #1 spot 😛 and the video she did for that song is very well done. RN1814 is such an awesome album. I’m glad I got to see her perform the 30 year anniversary in San Francisco back in 2019.
Thanks for sharing!
I would have loved it had they turned it into a duet! Such a missed opportunity!
Thanks for commenting!
@@dalee72 I know! Which further proves my point. It’s a great short film too.
Amen
Love Will Never Do is one of her greatest songs ever-however it is a massive grower. I remember buying the album in 89 and this was my least favourite but boy when it gets in your brain you will realise its utter brilliance!
We'll see what time does!
This became her first album with alot of interludes but her 1993 album Janet have a lot of songs on that album like 28 tracks ain't no telling if she have an unreleased tracks from this album and the Janet album but I'm telling you i have this album and the Janet album lord that album so long
I agree!!!
LOVE WILL NEVER DO is about interracial relationship.
which was still very taboo back then.
hence the lyrics 'our friends think we're opposites
It went number 1 because Janet revealed skin as well as sex appeal for the first time in the video.
BTW Someday is Tonight is a continuation of Let's Wait A While
Thanks for commenting!
Thank you so much!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video!!!
She had to be hospitalized during the filming of the that Rhythm Nation short film because of being exhausted from working so hard.
@@dalee72 yes I recall that. I just remember watching her review herself performing the knowledge and she was so frustrated. She wanted it to be perfect.
@@Jh1847 I think that info was covered in her MTV Rockumentary.

Thanks for sharing!

In fact, this is the only album of history to produced seven top 5 singles in US charts:
Miss You Much (n.1 for four weeks in october 1989)
Rhythm Nation (n.2 behind ''Another Day in paradise'' by Phil Collins in december 1989)
Escapade (n.1 for three weeks in march 1990)
Alright (n.4 in june 1990)
Come Back to Me (n.2 for two weeks, behind ''Vision of Love'' by Mariah Carey in august 1990)
Black Cat (n.1 for one week in october 1990)
Love Will Never Do (Without You) (n.1 for one week in january 1991)
#ICON
@@SalRocha Yes i also say that, ''Come Back to Me'' was my favorite song of her career, a very good and haunting ballad. The three last ballads of the album was the best thing to ending a album after dancing during the album.
I hate that SOTW didn't chart but I remember it being heard on the radio stations on this month in 1991 it's about crime drugs and being homeless
That groove follows Alright and yep this how she named the tour
I still loved this one
Such a good song!
State of the World was a radio only single to boost album sales. But Billboard said that it probably would’ve been the album’s eighth top ten hit had a physical single been released.

Since you’re a musical fan, I would recommend checking out the video for “Alright” since it features a few guests from the musical world. And is staged like a classic musical film.

Also, Son of a Gun!

Yes, Janet really kills RN live, very military motif also there’s a whole ass 30min long form video movie that goes with the album with ICONIC choreography. Britney’s chair dance in “Stronger” is 💯an homage to “Miss U Much” Check it out 😘
I watched the 30 minute short film last night!

OMG I love the show One day at a time

Sal when Alright was released it had stiff competition hence why it only went to number 4. Vogue from Madonna was number 1. Wilson Phillips Hold On was also top 3. Also HEART'S (All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You). The music was so much better then and the Lyrics of the songs were just so strong..
Thanks for the info!
You really should see if you can find the thirty-minute long-form music video, Rhythm Nation 1814. If you don't like music videos, this is more like a little musical, it has dialogue and long choreography pieces. It's so good!
It's been sent to me! I can't wait to check it out!!
Have you watched Janet's 1987 Grammy performance? I was about 23 and it was what we called a "watercooler moment" because the next day everyone was asking each other "Did you see Janet on the Grammys last night?". You should check it out if you havent already. 😊
I'll check it out!
That was one helluva performance!
Love Will Never Do was suppose to be a duet with Prince. The first verse was intended for him. Its why she sang it low versus the second verse.

“The knowledge” was the opening song for The State of the World Tour.

One of the things i like about the album overall,is that is has a very cold, industrial, ugly sound.even the happy girly songs have a brick wall
Coldness (sonically)to them.and it's a nice contrast to the up with people
Message of the album.
Totally!
“The Knowledge” was the fav song of Michael Jackson

Yes it is!
If you decide to watch her videos from this album, watch them in order of release. It might help you to understand the appeal of "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" by the end of it.
(1) Miss You Much (which stayed at #1 longer than any other song in 1989) (2) Rhythm Nation (was stuck at #2 behind the Phil Collin's megahit song about homelessness, I forget the name) (3) Escapade (went to #1) (4) Alright (went to #4) (5) Come Back to Me (all the way to #2) (6) Black Cat (went to #1) and (7) Love Will Never Do (Without You) (also went to #1)
I believe Janet Jackson is the ONLY artist to have seven top 5 hits from one album. And I think this is the only album to have produce a #1 hit in three consecutive years (Miss You Much in 1989, Escapade and Black Cat in 1990, and Love Will Never Do in 1991).
