Wanptek WPS305 power supply operation problem

  • Something to be aware of if you're getting one of these power supplies with encoders to adjust the voltage and current settings. With this supply at least, when you go to adjust the voltage, the current display changes to showing the current LIMIT, not the actual output current. It means you can't adjust the voltage and see how the current responds instantly, which I consider is a rather dumb way of working. The power supplies with a pair of coarse/fine knobs for voltage & current don't have this problem, since they are purely analogue adjustments.

It seems to be a firmware issue, and they seem to fix it.
I have almost the same model, WPS3010H (30V10A) branded by Wanptek.
It does display the actual current just fine while adjusting the voltage, just like you expect it here.

Interesting, thanks for mentioning that! I'm actually looking at getting a second supply, so it would be an excuse to try the Wanptek again. I wonder if this one was maybe a copy, since it wasn't actually branded Wanptek....

The other way to do it is set the voltage to the maximum you want to go up to and then turn the current meter up and see the voltage change. I agree though it isn't exactly clever how they have it setup when its specified to be used as a bench power supply and what you are doing is pretty basic. I think this power supply can also send voltage spikes out when you press the output button. I still do like this power supply but I think it will need a bit of modifying, especially if this power spiking issue is true, which is something I will need to verify my self.
All the safety features are present which I like.

I find this weird because I had seen a video about this exact same supply and it showed the current in real time (Voltage, Amp, Watt) and he didn't tinker with it, just fresh out of the box.

I experience those kind of dawbacks quite often with "modern" things. Often I think that the we go one step ahead just to fall two steps back. Examples:
smart watches - lack of readability at day light, wake up from sleep mode first and limited running time versus a "traditonal" mechanical, "instant" watch.
E-cars - I guess people will complain about lack of comfort i.e. cabin too cold in winter time, too warm in summer time, boot time at start-up etc.
You want to hear music ... but wait, the server or BT needs to connect first :)
    Greetings, Stefan

or you could spend more on a good power supply that implements digital control properly... with the LCD/OLED display ones they have separate metrics for set current and current being drawn

    • @laierr
      @laierr 2 года назад +1

@@rokiedecentra9656 idk, I have a model from that family (10A 30V), and it doesn't have that issue. It does display actual current just fine, while I'm adjusting the voltage. It branded by Wanptek though. Maybe the off-brand manufacturer cut some corners?

it won't be able to show the current until it latches the set voltage in (voltage display stops flashing) .. it's just part of the design .. love it or loathe it.

Hi! It was this one, an Eventek KPS303D: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08MPV8XTC/. That particular thing seems unique to Amazon, since I can't find anything searching for Eventek themselves, and "KPS303D" throws up a different supply.

It is a programmable power supply, meaning you should be able to set and read voltage and current by software on your computer, once you add the missing USB port on the back. Can't tell for sure because mine is still in the mail, but you should be able to automate most sweep operations necessary for semiconductor characterization.

@@kharali3475 Didn't bother. But I did install an ESP8266 inside, so I can control and read it over wi-fi. It's a very noisy SMPS, though. Not great for precision analog, but well suited for higher power stuff.

I don’t really trust any of these power supplies on Amazon. I’m willing to spend at most 150 bucks on a good solid power supply that’s safe and has low noise, did you ever end finding a new suitable power supply my friend?

Hi, I eventually went with this one, and so far it's been great. It seems to have no problem being shorted out even at full output voltage, and the current control is very good. I also like the 4 digit displays for extra accuracy.
