A Squeak in the Jeep / aka Cricket Noises

  • I've got these annoying squeaking noises coming from the VagabondExpedition Jeep Wrangler. I'm fairly certain it is two different squeaks - a wheel/brake squeak and another being suspension related.
    A local dealership, who for $45, told me a stone was lodged into the wheel/brakes and that the noise will go away on it's own and that I still have over 50% brake life left (front and rear). They didn't investigate the suspension noises, as this was a 'brake expert' and it would cost me another $50 to switch to someone that knows suspensions to investigate the other noise.
    Who's got some ideas for me? I'll take it to another mechanic once I get a few replies that might narrow down the search!

      I just replaced my brakes pads on my JKU and somehow put the mounting brackets in backwards too. Just had to flip them around. A good grease job should fix the other squeaking issue I hope.

      Do you actually need the pad mounting brackets?... I only ask because I don't really see the functionality of them. I'm no mechanic so please pardon the ignorance.

    The clicking sound heard when going over bumps is very similar to mine. I replaced the front drive line and the crunch-click went away. Yours may be the rear. This is common problem for three stock drive lines... Especially on lifted rigs. I thought the squeak sounds speed sensitive at first. For that, I'd say wheel bearing but after listening a bit more it'd check the torque on your suspension bolts. I found one of my squeaks was a lower control arm that had a super small movement... But it was the source of a maddening squeak until I re-torqued all my bolts. Good luck hope one of those gets it. At least you can check/fix those yourself and save the money. I'm subbed and like your vids, keep up the good work.

    I’ve had an extremely similar sound, and I found out that it was my stock license plate carrier vibrating against the body of my Jeep and my aftermarket rear bumper. I fixed it by adding foam tape to space them apart, and it worked well.

    Finally figured out my rear suspension chirp after hearing it for a year. The spring(s) are rubbing against the axle. A little old mechanic at Firestone figured it out and put some silicone caulking on it. And I haven't heard the noise since. It's been 3 weeks now. And no no chirp.

    Ever figure this out? 😆 I’m late here but found your video because I’m having squeaking noises also but they’re constant even when I’m in park. But at 2:54 in your video it looks Ike the noise syncs up with the exhaust bouncing around when you hit that nice big bump. I don’t know anything really about car mechanics but just something I noticed. Maybe you fixed it already! I hope so! I know the frustrations of jeeps with “mysterious problems” that mechanics can’t fix until you pay them hundreds even thousands and then the problem still exists. Happy new year 🙂

      I have a follow up video - but essentially it was my right rear brake that essentially "fell apart" - but it looked ok from a quick visual inspection. When the mechanic pulled that brake apart, it was obvious time to replace it.

    I have a very similar noise that I only hear once and a while at slow speeds. Slowing down or when letting off the brake and letting the Jeep idle forward. It went a away for weeks but came back after I washed the Jeep with a pressure washer. I wonder if my pad hardware broke also.

    • @aqualungs77
      @aqualungs77 6 лет назад

      It all of a sudden got worse and I noticed it more in the front when before it was in the rear. It sounded like sparrows. My friend heard it one day and was like what sounds like sparrows? I was surprised he knew what a sparrow sounded like.
      So the light noise I heard last year was the rear driveshaft cv joint gojng. When it got really bad that was the front. I thought something was in the brakes, which can happen. I inspected shaft boots numerous times no tears. I was at a crossroads. Spend more money and keep upgrading and keep building, or trade and build smaller. I wanted the new JL and I loved it, so I traded. I had 2.5” lift that gave me about 3” due to no armor or heavy bumpers and 35” tires.

    I've got a squeaky noise in my front right area. It does if when I move it up and down and also when I move the wheel left and right it only does it when moving to the left. It's not the breaks or power steering. I first thought it was control arm bushings however I sprayed oil on it and it still makes the noise. I ended up spraying pretty much everything and it still makes the noise. I am puzzled as to where it's coming from because I can't pin point it. If I find it I could fix it. It's driving me crazy it sounds like the sound of opening an old Buick car door it's horrible. Anyone have any ideas and why doesn't it do it when I turn right? Oh this is a 4x4 jeep also.

      Yes. I still need to put together my 'solved' video - but almost all of the noise you were hearing in the video (aside from a small bit of movement of the muffler heat shield) was coming from the right rear brake. A dealership told me the brakes were fine and it was just a 'small stone' that would work itself free. I went elsewhere for a second opinion and when we pulled the caliper off, the brake pad assembly fell apart. Lots of pad left, but it was still 'broken'. New brakes (despite about 40% pad left) and the problem is solved!
