So many wonderful days gone by. This brings back so many memories of grandma at the old wood stove. In her old apron she didn't have much just old miss matched dishes and stuff. But her dinners were so special. Cooked with love. Thank you for keeping these days alive 🙏
Love fried squash. My husband and I love meatless meals during the summer months. A plate of squash, cabbage, corn, cornbread, green beans is so good. My mom and grandma would fry out side meat or fatback to add to the meal.
Being of Middle Eastern ancestry, most of the meals Mom made had that influence. Squash was mostly made stuffed with lamb and rice, dried mint, and boiled with crushed tomatoes. It's delicious, but when I tried fried squash some time in my 30's, I loved it! I use corn meal with not liquid, just as you did, and now that I saw this, I need to make it tomorrow. Great video, as usual. Thanks!
I could eat fried squash every day. I grow it in my organic garden here in CA. I make mine exactly like you do yours except I make it in a non stick skillet. I am going to try slicing it the way your Pap did. My granny had the best garden in Kentucky and my favorite memory is just going to the garden with her and picking whatever was ready to harvest and use it make our meals for the day.
My dad loved fried squash more than anything and we always had a garden so we had it often. Mom did the medallions and the old man would eat them about as fast as she'd get them out of the pan. I love them too and make my own often. Mom just used cornmeal to bread hers but I like using just plain ole flour with some pepper and garlic powder. I salt them to taste at the table.

I live in eastern N.C. Fried squash has always been one my favourites. I picked some squash out of the garden today and fried them. The smells in the kitchen brings back so many memories ❤❤
We're originally from WV and my mom always fried us what we just called summer squash. I think some people call it "patty pan" squash. I'm so glad you reminded me of it. Putting it on my shopping list right now :)
Getting ready to fry squash myself! I love fried squash, fresh corn, fresh tomatoes, fresh cucumber and onions in vinegar and sugar water, pinto beans and cornbread. That is the perfect summer meal here in South Central Kentucky. Enjoy you and your girls videos. Feels like watching family!
We have SO much yellow squash from our garden right now. I cut it into rounds and fry it in a cast iron skillet just like you do. I do dip it in buttermilk before dredging in cornmeal and flour. It gives it just a tiny hint of tanginess. If I don't have buttermilk, I skip that step. Enjoyed the video. TFS. ~ Betty
In eastern NC we cut up yellow squash and sweet onions (with salt, pepper, and olive oil), then bake for a few hours until the liquid is baked out. So very good!
I'm in Eastern NC also... we cook squash with onions, fried meat grease, salt, pepper, and a little sugar. On top of the stove. And cook until all the water is cooked out and the squash/ onions are golden brown. Takes about two hours.
This is the only way I like squash-also from down east! My father loved the breaded and fried and I would cook it for him and I used flour with a little corn meal mixed in for breader. Hands down the steam fried with onions is the best!
This is exactly how we make it, but even stranger is that your kitchen looks exactly like my granny's. Exact same drawer pulls and the same scalloped detail thing over the sink. This is such a blast from my past. Thank you for sharing
I never thought to cut the squash in bigger pieces like that and I love the idea. So we always had medallion cuts in my Kentucky family and we only used corn meal. I will definitely try the half flower and half corn meal.
We would eat fried squash when I was little. I haven’t made it in years. Dad liked to grow yellow crookneck and green zucchini. I prefer the zucchini. Unfortunately my husband and kids aren’t big summer squash fans unless it’s in the form of zucchini bread. I will have to fry up some just for myself soon.

Fried squash has been one of my favorites ever since I was a kid. I love that we can get squash year round and can enjoy it anytime you want. I use a 2 1/2 quart Tupperware to dredge the medallions... putting 3 or 4 in at a time... giving it a shake... then the next 3 or 4. I think it goes pretty fast and neatly. One of my favorite vegetables.
This is my absolute favorite dish in the summer! Not to pat myself on the back, but I have gotten pretty good at making fried squash. My Mama has taught me right.
My kin was from the Appalachian mountains and we never ate our squash battered. Just sauteed squash, zucchini and onion in real butter. However, we did batter our fried green tomatoes. We called the last meal of the day, supper, not dinner.
My Pop put flour and cornmeal in paper sack and added the squash and shook the bag and fried it up.( I still do my okra this way) It was always delicious. My daughter and I eat yellow squash ALL the time just for lunch. I just sautee it in a little butter or oil with pepper until brown.Delicious everytime! This year am growing Cube of Butter variety but I still love crook neck. Its what I grew up on.
Lordy be how I miss my dear Mom. Mom would always make me fried green tomatoes. Mom passed away in 1998 she was a country girl and man those brown beans, wilted lettuce, and squirrel gravy just to mention a few and the fried green tomatoes. God bless you Moma.
We dip our in ranch. I prefer this 10-1 over fried green tomatoes. We always fried the first run of squash we got from the garden. That smell when they’re cooking is just awesome.😊
I'm looking forward to frying squash from our garden. We're in Alaska, so it'll be a bit, but I do love fried squash. I did not grow up with my family frying vegetables. Mostly boiling, lol. My Mom now does all manner of vegetable prepping and cooking. We learn and share with each other. Sometimes together, which is nice.
Okrey... when you said that you got me crying. Your manner of speaking takes me back home and how my daddy spoke, well him and my granny on my moms side. I truly love your videos and their content.
I’m Italian and we always eat all kinds of squash (zucchini, etc) the same way you do-it’s excellent! Another thing I do sometimes I make a garlic, Parmesan cream sauce to pour over it-like an Alfredo sauce. Give it a try! Dawn D
I grew up with the individual pieces fried one at a time. When my chidren were old enough to eat squash, I would have our two kids and my husband standing over me eating squash as fast as it came out of the pan. The squash rarely made it to the table with the rest of the meal. I'm growing squash and zucchini this year and I can hardly wait to fry up some. I'm widowed and alone now with my kids living an hour away, so it won't be nearly as much fun since there will be no one to stand over me while I'm frying. Goodness, I'm going to have fried squash, sliced tomatoes, fresh green beans, corn on the cob and hot cornbread. Wish you and I could sit down and enjoy it together. Diane in NC
Yes to fried squash! I like using panko breadcrumbs and I sometimes add parmesan cheese. When I was little, my mom would boil and mash squash with a little butter and cream. She also would saute sliced squash with onions, peppers and tomatoes. Tfs your recipe. Looks delicious! 💗
I grew up in a small town, moved away and work a crazy corporate life. I stumbled on your channel while I keep sound going in the background to help me focus. I have to say, you make my heart feel full. It reminds me of home. Thank you. ❤️
My mother fried squash both ways, she also fried it with potatoes and onions. That was all good but I did not care for her boiled squash. One time a bunch of relatives piled in, unannounced, for dinner and the whole table of food was eaten except for some of the boiled squash. My sister and I decided to eat some out of necessity, lol. I still don't love it but I don't hate it anymore!
If I make the main dish in the oven I do the squash on a cookie sheet there. If the main dish is done on the stove I fry it like you did ... and sometimes don't even flour it. However I do it, squash is easy to prepare, picks up an improved flavor (my opinion) and quickly gives you a great side dish. I like the fried green tomatoes and fried eggplant ideas too.
My husband just loved yellow summer squash. We had never had it until we grew it in our own garden. Our parents both had gardens but only grew staples like potatoes, green beans, tomatoes to can. I did do an egg wash with flour and fried up slices. I called it golden dollars. We both loved it so it was a big batch. Good memories.
My Momma cuts them long ways for frying that way too. I remember not too long ago sitting up and talking for hours with Momma over a plate full. We ate them all and talked so long we wanted more! So we had another plate full!
My grandmother used to make green squash (zucchini) fritters with a savory batter and diced squash. My dad made them as well. His uncle taught me to put maple syrup on them, and that's how I make them for our family. I learned them as the Italian name (pronounced 'pee-too-eelies'...no clue about spelling or dialect). This video reminds me of that recipe and the connections we have with food and family. I really like this channel and thanks for sharing!
When I was comin up my momma seldom put any breading on her squash. But she was from New Zealand and I don't think she was used to the way most folks cook. I have always breaded and fried mine similar to yours and that's the way I like it best.
There were seven children in our family so mother didn't have time but to scramble them. Actually, I forgot all about fried squash until this video. I will be buying squash tomorrow for a delightful treat long forgotten. You really take me back in time when I watch your videos. I never thought I would ever see a day like I was raised. Many blessings to you!
Try a deep fryer. It's like green eggs and ham---you might like it. It's thermostatically controlled and there's so much heat in the oil that temperature is fairly steady... More importantly, if you're frying chicken, you get 7 minutes to hustle around in the kitchen each time your drop the basket.
I have had other fried veggies like eggplant, okra, zucchini and green tomatoes but we always cooked yellow squash with onions in an iron skillet in just a bit of oil and butter, salt and pepper. I love it raw in salad too. My all time favorite yellow squash dish is in a casserole made with seasoned bread crumbs, eggs, Parmesan cheese onions and fresh Gulf shrimp. It's a recipe from my Dad and his Louisiana side of our family.
Never had squash, But I finally had zucchini many years ago, and loved it so much, my biggest regret is not trying it sooner. There is so many foods... vegetables mainly that i would not try that I wish I had. Love hearing your voice and you talking about anything you do. Your whole family is a pure treasure to me, Thank you Tipper 8-)
@@CelebratingAppalachia I am very picky, and yet, simple. When I enjoy something, and someone wants to cook it for me, its so easy I hope they aren't so overworked and hate doing it. Me personally, will go out of my way for someone, no matter if I don't like the smell of something cooking, would happily make it for them. When a video posts, which I look for every time I'm online, I click right away, and "LIKE" because I know it's going to be awesome!!!! Thank you once again Tipper and family!
My mother would make squash and zucchini and onions cooked in butter and bacon grease if i recollect correctly, it was very good as she was a very good cook. When I got married my new in laws made squash just like you made in this video. I've never made it this way but I'm going to today for supper. Appreciate all your wonderful videos , you share and teach so many good things.
OOooooh That looks so good, Tipper. One of my mom's most requested dishes and she did it both ways, all scrambled up with onions and the fried way you did. Guess what I'm buying this week at the grocery store. Oooh yea. Medium size, I'm thinking. : ) Thanks Tipper! God bless you and the family!
My momma always scrambled it- omg SOOOO WONDERFUL! Myself, I have always done it like you- in the rounds Grew up on fried okra, fried squash, fried taters, and pinto beans and turnip greens I took it all for granted when I was younger- now that my parents are gone- I CRAVE IT! I’ve learned how to prepare it now. 😀 Your family takes me back home - where I want to be. ❤️
When you referenced the Foxfire book, I suddenly remembered my aunt sharing with us things she read from her Foxfire books! Are they still in print? I wish I had listened more.
Yep, that is the way we do it, and fried oakrey as well. Many thanks for all your videos. Mighty educational and the best way to keep that heritage going.
Momma would slice the squash in medallions and slice onions and roll them all in corn meal. Put it all in the skillet together to fry. She would turn the concoction with a big spatula.. After both sides of the whole batch had lightly browned, she would serve the delecious mess. It was so good. My sister and I make it often in the summer..
Yep I grew up eating fried squash. Still eating it. I can eat a plate full. I love to smell it cooking. That makes me hungry and then I want to eat it all. By the way I really love your videos. Thanks for keeping our Appalachian heritage alive.
Fried squash is delicious! Never thought to cut it like Pap liked it. So much easier for a family. I learned how to make a different kind of yellow squash from a neighbor. Is different change every now and then. Slice up your squash. In a little butter saute a some chopped onion. Cook till getting tender. Add squash. When almost done add a can of drained, whole kernel corn and grated cheddar cheese. Heat through till cheese starts to melt. Add salt and pepper as desired when cooking the squash. I cook this in a pot rather than a skillet....iron is my choice of skillet....because you want the deep pot. Is good. But fried is my favorite. ❤️
About the only way I really like squash is fried. You mentioned the moisture of okra. Most don't know that okra is related to hibiscus and mallow. Marshmallow was originally made from the roots of the mallow plant that grew in the marsh, mixed with honey, in ancient Egyptian times.
STEWED IS GREAT IF YOU DON'T LET IT GET ALL WATERY...WITH LITTLE ONIONS & COOKED TIL IT'S "STIFF" KINDA LIKE A GOOD SERVING OF MACARONI AND CHEESE..MY WIFE THINKS I'M CRAZY CAUSE AS MUCH AS I LOVE CHEESE....TO ME THE CHEESE COVERS UP SOME OF THE BROWNED SQUASH'S FLAVOR....CALL ME CRAZY...OH YEAH....MY MOM DID BOTH MEAL/FLOUR AND WITHOUT...CALLED IT FIXED WITH MEAL/FLOUR FRIED AND W/O ANY BREADING *SAUTEED*....NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT ON EARTH......
Yes I grew up with fried squash and still love it to this day. I have had it both ways as well as squash casserole. Enjoy all fresh garden food, at 74, I find that it is the Best. Blessings to you and your family from Alabama.
We love fried squash even squash casserole. My daddy was a Baptist preacher who didn’t like fried chicken but he did like fried squash so that’s what we ate.
@@kathya739 I kind of thought so too. I remember it surprised me that he didn’t like fried chicken but then again my mother wasn’t the worlds best cook either.🙂
Love fried squash ! 😋 when I was a child we didn't have meat every nite especially in summer, we ate from the garden , a mess of fresh green beans cooked with new potatoes, fried squash sliced tomatoes, green onions and a pan of cornbread that was supper 😋
It's interesting that the two methods you mentioned are the same exact thing here and you're likely 1,000 miles from here. I've had the sauteed version using water instead of oil and a small onion and some okra mixed into it . Of course we've had the fried method just as much if not more, it's always a crowd favorite : ) Pretty interesting how thing's are different but also the same here.
Fried squash and onions every summer with cornbread and chow- chow, green onions and peas! I love how neat yours looks- my momma always did the scramble.
I grew up with more of the scrambled fried squash...its so good and the fried green tomatoes! We always did the fried green tomatoes sliced one at a time. But I watched 'Cooking with Brenda Gantt' video and she did the small pieces of green tomatoes with alittle buttermilk to coat then flour and cornmeal mixture and fry in your oil! More of the scrambled way. So much faster and crispy!👍🥰
My mom “scrambled” the circular pieces. Squash was a staple at our house growing up. My husband’s mom fried the pieces individually and that’s how I cook squash now. One cannot eat just one piece if there are several on the plate. They make a yummy snack also. I enjoyed this video.🌟💜🌟
I started deep frying yellow squash, green zucchini, and fried green tomatoes; bag-shake with a cornmeal/flour blend, or flour/cornstarch blend. Chunk them up; add a splash of buttermilk to make the coating stick and deep fry batches at 360 degrees. Salt and pepper after removing while still hot. I add a dusting of Chipotle powder for kick. A lot faster than individual frying. Light as a feather and crispy, too.
My mom made fried squash all the time in the summer. My parents had a big garden and we always had plenty of fresh vegetables. I fry the squash slices individually just as my mom did. And as you said to do: only turn them once. The browner the slices the sweeter the taste. Thank you for sharing this recipe. My parents were from WV and your videos remind me so much of the sayings and recipes from my childhood.
Oooooo…I love me some fried (crispy) squash! Cornmeal makes the crispy crispier! My wife adds a little cornstarch too. But I can get completely goofy over some fried squash! Or okra!
Being from the South just about have had all vegetables fried in one way or another. Definitely used to doing the rounds and easier to use a fork while frying them. Not used to the dry method of frying them so will have to give them a try. Another way I love to cook squash is boiling them till done and mixing it with flour and seasonings. Then frying them like hush puppies. Another wonderful video and thank you. 🍀
Yes! My grandmaw, great-grandmaw, and aunts all did fried squash. Sometimes they cut it in little cubes and added little cubed potatoes to the mix and fried them all together!! Yum! It’s just good! Of course there were usually purple hull peas, onion, tomato, and cornbread.
I'm sure I'd love it but as a 61yr old southerner I've never had fried yellow squash! My dad didn't care for much of anything with breading or batter coating so other than fried seafood we didn't have much of that since mama cooked to suit him...they were very old school lol
Born and raised in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado, there are many differences between your part of the country and mine. I love most any squash, especially Winter Hubbard. It's hard to find now days. My mom only fried the green zucchini squash. For the yellow squash, it was sliced like a coin and pan fried with butter, salt and pepper. I will definitely try the yellow squash the way you prepared it as it looks fabulous. We seldom saw violets in our area, but we Did play with the snapdragons by pinching the sides so it resembled a dragon. Thank you, thank you Tipper to you and all who help put your videos together. Best to you ❤
I can't imagine anyone not having had fried squash. Growing up and even now, I could make a meal off of fried squash and maybe some fried onions if I don't have spring onions.

We dip our in ranch. I prefer this 10-1 over fried green tomatoes. We always fried the first run of squash we got from the garden. That smell when they’re cooking is just awesome.😊
That's exactly what I did last night. Fried the little squash rounds and dipped then in Ranch. Yum!
We always called it squash fritters. Goes good with a mess of wilted lettuce.
We fry it up and also zucchini when in season usually with bluegill
I had fried squash all my life. I'm 81 years.. I like it cooked both ways.
Okrey... when you said that you got me crying.
Dawn D
Sounds great!
Yum. We eat a lot of zoodles, this sounds delicious. Thank you.
Fried, baked or stewed - nothing better than yellow squash! Thank you!
My hubby & I are growing 6 kinds of summer squash this year & love frying it! We didn't grow up eating it.
Would love to see your pickle recipe.
Wow that's great Lydia! I'll try to do a video on the pickles 😀
I’d love to see the pickles too!
Diane in NC
That would be nice Diane 😀
Yes to fried squash! I like using panko breadcrumbs and I sometimes add parmesan cheese. When I was little, my mom would boil and mash squash with a little butter and cream. She also would saute sliced squash with onions, peppers and tomatoes. Tfs your recipe. Looks delicious! 💗
I sauté squash with onions, salt & pepper but your version sounds really good & I'm gonna try it. Tfs.
I grew up in a small town, moved away and work a crazy corporate life. I stumbled on your channel while I keep sound going in the background to help me focus. I have to say, you make my heart feel full. It reminds me of home. Thank you. ❤️
So glad you enjoy our videos 😀
Now you're taking me back, pan fried squash, was a common side to a meal, as was pan fried cabbage and corn with pork chops.
We had fried squash fried okra and fried green tomatoes. I could make a whole meal out of those three things.
Love fried squash! When they start coming on it’s the beginning of squash everything😊.
My Momma cuts them long ways for frying that way too. I remember not too long ago sitting up and talking for hours with Momma over a plate full. We ate them all and talked so long we wanted more! So we had another plate full!
That brought tears to my old eyes. What a blessing to have a meal with your mama. May you have many more.
So glad you enjoy our videos Kenneth 😀
My mom made it every Summer! We ate it dipped in ketchup.
That sounds like my girls 😀
I'm from Connecticut and I grew up on fried squash, just like the way you made it. And fried squash flowers.
You are so nice-thank you! I was the same way-I was a very picky child 😀
Brings back memories of my childhood eating fried squash . fried okra and fried potatoes and onions! Thanks.. Great video!!
This makes me hungry...i could live outta the garden!
My momma always scrambled it- omg SOOOO WONDERFUL! Myself, I have always done it like you- in the rounds
Grew up on fried okra, fried squash, fried taters, and pinto beans and turnip greens
I took it all for granted when I was younger- now that my parents are gone- I CRAVE IT!
I’ve learned how to prepare it now. 😀
Your family takes me back home - where I want to be. ❤️
When you referenced the Foxfire book, I suddenly remembered my aunt sharing with us things she read from her Foxfire books! Are they still in print? I wish I had listened more.
They are! You can search and find their website. The old books are available and they're still making new ones 😀
Interesting... My baby brother's preschool in NY was called The Foxfire School... I wonder if it had any relation.
Delicious! My husband has told me about squash like this that his grandmother used to make. I’m Going to try your recipe
A Baptist preacher that doesn’t like fried chicken? That’s a rare man there😀
@@Kickstart500 very rare but he was the original Jimmie Hendrix too
Thought it was a requirement, being Baptist, to love fried chicken;)!
Of course we've had the fried method just as much if not more, it's always a crowd favorite : )
Pretty interesting how thing's are different but also the same here.
Fried squash and onions every summer with cornbread and chow- chow, green onions and peas! I love how neat yours looks- my momma always did the scramble.
Definitely going to try this-I'm one who's never had fried squash.
I haven’t either. Except in a stir fry - no coating
Oh! I hadn’t watched enough! She’s more or less “deep-frying” not just frying on top of a coating of oil in the pan!
I grew up on the scramble. Everything else was the same. Squash are so good that they don't need much seasoning.
Or okra!
Yum-I love fried okra too 😀
Being from the South just about have had all vegetables fried in one way or another. 🍀
3 vegetables I didn't like as a kid, was Squash, pumpkin, cabbage. Yuk.🤢
Now as a adult, I love all 3. 😊
Same, still not much love for squash tho
I hope you get to try it Adrian 😀
I also loved my fried seafood
