As Ben Hodges (US general ret) says, war is a test of will. Ukraine can win against Russia in 3 ways: militarily (unlikely at the moment), economically if Russian people cannot make the munitions and are starving (more likely in the medium term) or politically by Putin being overthrown by a palace coup (growing more likely). These dangers (military, economic or political collapse) also apply to Ukraine. Who can survive longer: Russia or Ukraine? If Europe and the West want Ukraine to win and Putin / Russia to be defeated then victory for Ukraine would be a certainty.

Just ask Donald Trump if he wants to be seen as the first US President to be defeated by Russia both on line and on the ground. That'll get the competitive juices flowing. As they say in politics, perception is everything.
I think in Europe we misunderstand the American position. It seems inconsistent for Trump to be very concerned about China but very relaxed about Russia. But for Americans it's all about maintaining their position as the world's premier superpower. China is a long-term rival for that position and stopping that happening has become a national goal for the US. They feel they will have failed as a nation if they were to be relegated to number two position in the world. It's not even about security directly, though they will fell less safe in a world dominated by China. Mostly it's about national pride. Russia, of course, are not a serious rival at all. The US already beat them once in the Cold War, they don't think they need to do it again. The best way of persuading the US to help in Ukraine is to point out that victory for Putin is a victory for Xi Jinping. If the US won't defend Ukraine, not even just by supplying weapons, if they seem scared of standing up to Putin in any way then Xi Jinping will conclude that they are very unlikely to go to war with China to save Taiwan. Also, if Russia get everything they want out of a Ukraine peace deal, even though they are the aggressor, that sets a precedent for China to get away legally with annexing Taiwan (they claim it was always part of China anyway, just as Putin claims that Ukraine is not a real country and is historically part of Russia). If China could take Taiwan and the US did nothing then the US loses influence in the region - it is no longer reliable as an ally and other countries will feel they have to start being more subservient to China who will have proved they are the real power in the region. The US does not want to go to war over Taiwan, their aim should be to deter China from invading Taiwan in the first place. Keep China in their box. But to do that they cannot show weakness in Europe.
Close. In reality, for America it's all about maintaining the illusion that there are serious rivals/threats to the US and its allies, to maintain support for the massive, overkill American military-industrial complex.
@@spookyangst There is no illusion since Russia wants to adjust the borders in Europe. That is not acceptable to most of US European allies, full stop.
