    One very important tip. Never build a power relay on the two exposed power coils. Psi Lab and Shadow Chamber are power hogs, but when built in those spaces use ZERO power.

      Fair point. However, if you do build a power relay on them the power relays give ten power instead of the usual three.

      I disagree. Building a power relay on a coil gives 10 power. When fully upgraded, just a few Avenger Power missions mean you will only need that one. Get Psionics early and upgrade it to train two Psionicists at a time. You build this on the second power coil. If you post an engineer in the psy lab and max out two psionics ASAP, you will get the shadow chamber about the time as you finish leveling your psionics. Then you can tear down the psy lab abd build the shadow chamber on the now empty second power coil.

    List for people with short attention spans:
    1. Guerrilla tactics school 0:33 - squad size upgrade, rookie training and more; build ASAP
    2. Advanced Warfare Center(AWC) 2:26 - reduces healing time in half, re-spec soldiers
    3. Power Relay 5:24 - just because you need more power to keep building stuff
    4. Resistance Comms 5:41 - by now you're running out of contacts and you need more funds
    5a. Proving grounds 6:42 - unlock plasma grenades, experimental ammo, skulljack; build first if you have enough engineers
    5b. Workshop 6:32 - build before 5a if you're not doing well on engineers
    6. Shadowchamber 7:45 - story requirement
    Other things:
    Defense matrix 8:03 - not bad, but only useful once
    Psi lab 8:29 - train psionic soldiers; too late in game, but can be fun
    Laboratory 9:11 - speed up research; not as critical as others; build only if it does not sacrifice an item from main list
    Placement of rooms 10:29

      The distance does a big number on aim penalties. You should try to get close on one turn dont use the second. Bring another soldier close in a flanked position and only engage if you can kill or severely damage. And always, always keep squad sight and long sight on your sniper in a position far from the battle but within sight of the enemy.

I like most changes here, I just miss the ghost armor. It's just so awesome.

    Thanks for these guides! The "time limit" in this game makes me anxious so I want to be as efficient as possible. I already started over because I was blindly building and upgrading the things I was being told to by the game, and as a result my squad started becoming underpowered. So this playthrough im going to try and ignore that and focus on improving my equipment and soldiers first, since their performance is the backbone of the entire game.

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  8 лет назад +12

      I think your intended approach will help quite a bit. In general, equipping yourself to kill aliens faster whenever the opportunity presents itself is the top priority. The NPCs will always blather on about how important it is to do something or other but you can almost always wait (just don't let the doom clock run out, that really would be bad!).

    • @Svoorhout85
      @Svoorhout85 8 лет назад +1

      I got plated armor, magnetic and gauss weapons now and my squad is kicking ass! Mutons are the newest, most dangerous enemy ive encountered so far and they havent been a problem yet.But you were right, the doom clock has advances quite a bit so I need to focus on epanding my contacts now to get at those facilities or there will be trouble. I managed to complete the alien hunters dlc quest with the viper king without any of the previous upgrades on my previous playthrough, and I almost killed it before it ecaped. (Central's reaper skill rekt him) im curious to try that out now with my geared team!

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  8 лет назад +7

      If you push fast enough into magnetic weapons, there is a window of time where you're actually overpowered and that feels pretty sweet. Obviously, tougher opponents will show up but by then you'll also have more promotions under your belt and you'll be able to dish out a whole lot more damage. If you're worried about the doom clock, you could move the story forward because you'll take progress off the doom clock for killing the first codex, the first avatar, etc.

    • @darrenjpeters
      @darrenjpeters 7 лет назад +2

      Imo, research modular weapons, alien biotech, mag weapons, hybrid materials, plated armor, in that order, and fit in any research that you can do instantaneously in between if the opportunity presents itself, researching the mimic beacon as soon as possible should also be a priority, do it before plated armor if you get the chance.

    • @darrenjpeters
      @darrenjpeters 7 лет назад

      edit:, i should add, if my free Avenger slot is middle of the top row, i research alien biotech first, so as to get an awc up in that slot as fast as possible. Its the most desirable position for an awc, because a mid workshop can put a drone in it, whereas you don't have that option if you put it in a corner, plus you want it up as early as possible to maximize your chances of getting free perks.

    There actually is a valid strategy in going Laboratory first, provided you get an early scientist(s) as well. It has a high opportunity cost, but it can propel your research allowing you to get mid and lategame upgrades much earlier than intended.
    But it will weaken your early game and economy considerably.

    You can get psionics quite fast actually and they really change everything, when you can just take control over Andromedon and put Sectopod in stasis. Alien Biotech-Sectoid-Psionic - all the research you need. Yes, it delays other stuff, but personally I prefer to get Proving grounds and all upgrades in GTS much later, but to start using psionics on ~3 month. And by ~4 month they become stronger then any other squad members. (all numbers for commander difficulty). Psi are also good as they can leave all kills for 4 others - they don't need exp, and lvling up 4 is much faster then 6.

    I built the psionic labs before the testing grounds. Let me tell you something, even if you struggle a bit with the buildings, the psionic soldier is totally worth it. You can block enemies from launching grenades, have guaranteed hits that ignore armor, give debuffs (rupture included and asegurated, the best debuff you can inflict after mind control, one debuff that can also be given with insanity), plain mind controlling enemies (with the best equipment it can control a cerberus with ease), and it has the death ray, as I like to call it. It's one of the best classes IMO

    I would recommend building the work shop first. You could then clear out and build the two other rooms on ether side at the same time with the Gremlin drones. It far faster and you could save your engineers for other key facilities like the proving grounds and psi lab.

    Workshop is expensive and power hungry, it's generally not a good idea to build it since you never really need that many engineers.
    Ideally you don't want to spend too much time expanding, it takes a while for you to get a return on your supply investment, and advent facility placements are usually 2 regions away from where you can currently reach so it sucks to spend time expanding only for a facility to be built 2 more regions away, whereas if you wait for a facility to be built and then expand to reach it you can kill two birds with one stone. This allows you to delay building comm stations. Additionally, since facilities can be reached by researching facility leads (allowing you to attack it without expanding to it) you can often delay building comm stations for even longer.
    If you use GTS to only train 1-2 classes (grenadiers, maybe rangers too) then you only need to buy equipment for those classes, and can easily save supplies, especially since you didnt need to buy workshop, power station, radio relays, and can spend your intel on black market supplies rather than expansion. This will allow you to afford GTS, PG, AWC and Psi lab before you focus on expansion.
    GTS is probably the first thing you need to build as you say. Being able to get squad size upgrades and to train soldiers into what you need (grenadiers) is very powerful for those early game power increases.
    As mentioned, best things to build on power coils are psi lab and shadow chamber since they are power hogs. Building a psi lab on your first power coil can give you psi ops with a decent number of good abilities, such as stasis and domination, as early as July, in time for some of the tougher enemies like archons etc.
    Proving grounds gives you access to plasma grenades fairly early which is crucial considering how OP grenadiers are in the early and mid game, and gives you access to things like experimental grenades, heavy armour and heavy weapons, which will further boost your combat capabilities for the mid and late game. You can also get a skulljack and the skullmining project to help you control avatar project progress
    AWC will cut down on wound recovery times by a lot, making wounds far less devastating to you. If you are lucky you will get a good ability from retraining as well! This is pretty crucial on Legend where wound recovery takes ages
    Later you can also get a shadow chamber on the second power coil at no power cost, allowing you to detect what enemies you will face on each mission, and allowing you to further sabotage the Avatar timer and buy time.
    By mid-late game you will have OP psi operatives in your team, will have benefited greatly from the buildings you built, and will be able to begin gradually expanding to hit facilities. You may not cover the map quickly, but you will definetly have an easier time with the game as a result of your rapid power increases, and you should still be able to handle the avatar timer by letting the clock nearly run down.
    Of course all this applies to vanilla, not WOTC. But rapid expansion really isnt the way to go, you need the helpful buildings fast ideally

    I actually build my Advanced Warfare Center before my GTS facility. This is because while Squad sizes are definitely a necessity to keep up with the difficulty curve of the game, you don't get your first squad upgrade until Sergeant. If you're doing an even coating of training your new recruits, you shouldn't have a soldier reach that rank until after you've built the GTS facility as your second crucial build in the base. However, the AWC is important because you want your soldiers to heal faster and therefore have more teambuilding options early-game and are less likely to be caught with no soldiers as they heal faster. If you don't have the AWC built quickly enough but you have a GTS facility and your first Squad upgrade, then you're also burning through troops spending time in the infirmary 1 soldier faster and you have 1 more slot to fill that you might not have enough healthy soldiers to fill the roster of. I never understood why people thought the GTS facility was the superior building to build first. Wait a few days until the AWC is available to build something. You're only a few days behind on construction.

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  7 лет назад +8

      I would suggest that you're less likely to have soldiers in the infirmary when you add a fifth member to the squad simply because the extra squad members will help you leave fewer aliens alive to shoot back. That said, I think both facilities are extremely valuable and the next time I play, I may switch the order just to see the effect.

    • @QrazyQuarian
      @QrazyQuarian 7 лет назад +6

      TapCatVids Oh, they're definitely both equally valuable. And a 5th member isn't going to happen immediately. Remember too that with each turn-based RPG there is something known as an "action economy". In this game, allowing a 5th slot for a soldier adds 2 actions to our side of the action economy, and one extra body to get shot at. In terms of raw firepower, the enemy is actually highly-stacked against us (except we are by default smarter than the computer and have a better understanding of tactics, so we therefore can handle situations better), especially in those inevitable situations where you somehow get caught in 3 pods at once. Suddenly you're lucky if a soldier doesn't die, and one more soldier actually doesn't make that much a difference--in fact, in these situations, more soldiers are likely to be injured BECAUSE you added a 5th soldier.
      Now, I think if you played on Normal, a GTS facility might be a better option, simply because you can easily outsmart and outgun enemies about 95% of the time. However, on Commander I would sooner rely on an AWC to ensure that I have soldiers to fulfill the objectives within those ever so crucial first 6 months. And I'll be frank: I'm not smart enough to play it on Legend, so I won't even pretend to have a strategy for that difficulty. lol
      But I guess in the end does it really matter? Haha It's to each person's playstyle, and it's only a very early-game argument that won't matter by the time you get to tier 2.

    • @MrJohannson
      @MrJohannson 7 лет назад +1

      Psionic Phazon weird, I had a different experience with commander difficulty, I would fail it miserably every time I went AWC first.
      GTS actually gets built just in time for the first sergeant in my playthroughs.

    • @hailitalia86
      @hailitalia86 5 лет назад

      I did it first as well playing on veteran and it did help and I was getting random upgrades early on. Then did GTS next and did squad size first thing, had enough to immediately jump to 5 soldiers as well. Harder difficulty than Veteran it's prolly better to do GTS first in that case.

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  3 года назад +2

      Good luck, managing your base correctly will make a big difference! I'll give you one other tip that will also help. On the globe, focus almost exclusively on scanning to open up new resistance territories. If there are alien bases revealed, then beeline toward them. This will allow you to attack one whenever the avatar project starts getting close to completion and push their progress back down. This can be a real killer, but if you aggressively add territories then you should always be able to buy more time.

    I built the advanced warfare center first. This allows my guys to almost immediately start unlocking hidden abilities. I researched Alein Biotech immediately, then you can build it. Follow this by the proving ground, then a power relay, then a workshop, then a guerilla tactics school. Only drawback is having 4 soldiers for a little while. But the hidden abilities early on in your best soldiers can be awesome.

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  7 лет назад +3

      I'm already recommending the AWC as soon as the 2nd slot opens up so the major difference is building the Proving Ground so early rather than the GTS. The GTS allows not only a 5th soldier but also a 25% bonus to experience as well as extra loot from every drop. In addition, you can start training rookies into the squaddies of whichever class you choose. Nothing you get from the Proving Ground during that month or so will even come close to making up for all the squad development you're passing up by not building the GTS.

    Kudos on the whole series. As someone who has been playing since the 1994 original, I really appreciate the insight you provide into the nuances and intricacies of this iteration of game. This is a standard development, but there is also a strategy through Providing Ground and Psi Lab, because control over the enemy is more important than fighters who always miss the target, which is why I study robot hacking for a specialist and damage rather than first-aid kits. Providing Ground is the best strategy even for a standard unit, because you need time to research the cranial drill and ammunition. Four fighters will be enough to live more than three months before the construction of the Guerrilla School begins, if you have ammo for accuracy and Bolt Caster with Frost Bomb. Faction heroes will help you with this if it is WOTC.

I had to slowly watch over in game days as my game ended. do you have a link maybe to any very informative vids on this or have you done one yourself? I think I was just unlucky and apologies if I've missed a vid on this, but I have searched for days now and not many go in depth.

      The developers definitely don't do a lot to help new players learn the ropes. There's a fine line between respecting your audience and letting them figure things out without hand holding and simply dumping them into a situation that they are very likely to fail and get frustrated. Not sure that XCOM is always on the right side of that line but that's why I made these guides, hoping to help people get through that learning curve with a little less pain.

    That was a good insight on the buildings. i'm on my 3rd ironman campaign (lost the two first fast, one because I went on the alien hunter mission way too fast) so I had not realised what all the building did yet.

      @TapCat  8 лет назад

      Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful. I've gotten a lot of hours of enjoyment from XCOM 2, but it doesn't do a great job of telling you how much of anything works let alone what to prioritize. I'm trying to produce a number of reasonably short videos to help fill that gap for those who don't have the time or inclination to watch one more Let's Plays.

    Subbed. Great in depth stuff. I've made a lot of mistakes with my facility build. I'm well past Mag Weapons. I've got exo suits and predator armor. But I've put off my first resistance comms for far too long. And I don't even have an advanced warfare center. So my top guys don't have any bonus perks from other classes. That last part isn't too bad. After all, a full team should have everything you need.
    But my Avatar counter is way up, and the skulljack and blacksite raids have only barely dented it.
    This game shakes things up, in that engineers are arguably more important than scientists.

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  7 лет назад

      I have to admit that your situation doesn't sound promising. The good news is that it definitely sounds like you've learned a lot in this first attempt, so you should be in good shape if you need to make a 2nd attempt. FWIW, I definitely find engineers more important most of the time. When research is finished too quickly, you won't have the resources to build what it unlocks anyway. Extra engineers can clear more debris and actually get you more supplies and alloys in addition to the facility bonuses and their ability to build things faster.

    "Workshop in the middle" isn't the end all be all, you can put it to the side with two facilities that use two engineers (power relay, resistance comms, etc.).

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  8 лет назад

      This is generally meant to show an ideal build, but as I said in the video the most important thing is to position it to take advantage of a total of 4 engineer workstations. As long as that's accomplished then I agree that the exact location isn't life-or-death.

    • @Hopalongtom
      @Hopalongtom 6 лет назад

      In War of the Chosen, Engineers can be ranked up with resistance ops [rarely], this can allow them an additional Gremlin to use, or better stats in staffed slot, so in that case the Middle is even better!
