Nice how you guys skip Africa, when talking about wine and beer. I swear in the west, you would think that history happens only in Europe, Asia(Western and Eastern) and with Native Americans, but the 2nd most populous continent on earth they pretend that NOTHING happened there for centuries until Europeans and Arabs show up, especially South of the Sahara. And written sources cant be a problem because SOME of the cultures they talk about in the Americas don't have a written language. There's Palm wine, banana beer, millet beer, tej mead, etc. There's gods of beer in various Bantu cultures.
At 03:18, surely you must mean "7 centuries", rather than millenia?

Fun fact: According to the Primary Chronicle, a history of the Kievan Rus, the Grand Prince of Kiev Vladimir the Great reportedly preferred Christianity to Islam b/c the latter banned drinking, "the joy of the Rus."
And how else can you force people to be baptized en masse in rivers, if not after a mug of alcohol?
The #1 way to anger a Russian man is to get between him and his vodka.

The idea that drinking was just accepted because people had free time is hilarious.

Glad to see that my alcohol fueled partying and drunken good times in the university is a tradition that goes back to the beginning of beer. Now married with 3 kids, God I miss my university days, good education and great fun!
These anti-Universities riots mentioned at 5:50 were really bonkers. A HistoryTuber M. Laser made good videos about the Medieval History of the Oxford and Cambridge Universities, describing them in more detail. I know that I've recommended this particular channel a couple of times here already but you really seem to have an affinity for similar topics (including the history of hopped beer, which I mentioned previously).
M. Laser really is great! Hard to find a history RUclipsr with his academic, well-sourced style that is also as interesting :)
Reminds me of the schoolboy rebellions during Georgian Times - the students often had actual pistols!

With you talking about "ale" vs "beer", I got reminded that my Dutch in-laws do the opposite: they ask me if I want a "pilsje" (pilsner, catch-all for lager) or a "beer". Since I have been working professionally in beer (transport, retail, workshops, pairings ..) since before I met them, I have no idea if they do this all the time.
would love to see the history of alcohol in those east asian, south American, and north American native cultures!
Yes please!! I'd love to see the history of beer and alcohol in China especially, since that's where we have some of the oldest pre-agrarian evidence for the existence of beer!
Hi! I've been a massive fan of your show for years now and you're a big part of why I decided to go back to university and become an academic. My upcoming PhD is actually in the social funtions of taverns so I'd be really interested to see your reading list for this fantastic episode, as you touch on lot of similiar themes. Keep up the great work all and best wishes for the future! :)
He. I think the geatest strength of Extra History isn't so much the actual information they provide, but making you curious about various topics.
The EH series on the South Sea Bubble and Paper Money got me thinking more about economics and thus gave me an improved understanding of the mechanics of an economy for example.
I guess we do have to realize why Fantasy often began at a tavern too.
Other than a place where you can meet with anyone.
You probably need to wait till they put out their "Lies" video oor something. Usually thats the most likely place they mention their sources.
So you're telling me college students have been getting drunk and causing problems since college existed?
I know right?😂
Dragon's Milk is actually still around, sort of. New Holland brewery in Michigan makes an 11% abv Bourbon barrel aged stout called Dragon's Milk and it's absolutely delicious. It's hard to find in a lot of places and stupid expensive, I've seen individual 12 oz. bottles going for around 5 bucks each here on the west coast, but it's so worth a try if you can.
I am still trying to process the fact that there is a brand of drink called Dragon’s Milk
Can confirm. Everything.
Source: I grew up in the tip of the mitten.
You can find 4 pks of dragons milk at grocery stores in Ohio. Plus they make special seasonal variations on it such as s’mores, coffee chocolate, and oatmeal cookie. There’s also a barrel aged golden ale and red ale that are really good.
@@afrozen10-02 Yeah they've got the 4 packs at my local Whole Foods as well but they're like 22 bucks each plus deposit. Gonna have to keep an eye out for some of those other flavors though, I love me a good red ale and it's hard to find any ales other than IPA's out here in Portland. Cascade hops seems to rule all when it comes to the microbreweries out here.
I find Dragon's Milk here in North Carolina.
One of the interesting theories I have heard is that the stereotypes for witches were as a result of the crackdown against women brewers. Cats are used to keep down rats eating the grain, brooms are for keeping the spaces clean, ... and the pointy hats are just for fun, I guess.
Drunken college shenanigans have always been a thing, huh?
I'm so glad I stay out of that craziness.
It's a great fun to listen to the history of beer, booze and such while consuming these. Thanks!
Someone needs to write a book: "Breaking Wind: Fart Jokes Throughout the Ages and Their Effects on History."
Seriously tho AHAHAH
Of note: while the fine culture surrounding sake earned it the name "rice wine" in the English speaking world, its brewing process is closer to that of beer than of grape wine.
Huh, today I know. Even in my home country the thing is still called wine.
it should be more like "rice beer"
5:46 So students drinking large amounts of alcohol has been common since the 13th century? Wow.
Watching this while drinking tea
damn brit 🎩🍷☕️☕️☕️🫖🫖
I really can't believe that some economies rely so heavily on beer
Try a dose of dysentery and then you'll understand. My father took a year to recover and he was ex farmer and extremely fit and healthy. The beer was equivalent to low alcohol today but enough to kill the pathogens.
Dysentry, Polio, Cholera, Hepatits, and Intestinal Worms are really really bad
That pie chart slice sure looks small for a 36% percentage XD
Maybe the artist had a little too much to drink?

Just wanted to say, your history videos are just so comfy for me at this point, I've been watching them since the beginning and I watch plenty of other history videos but no other channel captures my attention and makes me feel content to just sit and watch like this one
Ludwig Haetzer:We should not drink beer!
Germany:Hold my beer...
Seriously though, imagine saying to a crowd of Germans that they shouldn't be drinking beer and then thinking that it would end well for you.
My grandparents lived in a town in England which was the centre of the hop growing industry, and every year we used to go there as a kid for the Hop festival
Keep in mind most of the beer was below 3.5% Alcohol by Volume at the time. But, then again, people were smaller then...
They also just drinked 3 times as much then people nowadays
I've been watching and rewatching Extra History since their Punic Wars episodes!
It's always disheartening to see how women through history have been pushed to the sides even if they were at the origin of an event or product.
@Leo The British-Eurasian ?
Especially if they were at the origin.
Yeah, like, I dont understand why our male ancestors hated women so much. Even in ancient times did they find every excuse and fight tooth and nail to the best of their power just to hold women down, to fuel the delusion that men were somehow "superior". Its only VERY recently that women are finally breaking the shackles of men's control over them, and as we can so to this very day, some men are fighting to push them down with oppressive legislation in the USA, such as the anti-abortion law.
It's pathetic, horrible, and depressing to say the least.
That is definitely a sad motif throughout the ages when it comes to many things, yes... Although... In this particular case... One might actually argue that - barring a (relatively) brief couple o' centuries' hiatus at the end of the last millennium - women have overwhelmingly dominated the art of brewing for all of recorded history; To the extent that even the very deities who presided over the craft, were exclusively female.
I was thinking "oh, more ads" until you got to the New Haven pizza wars AND said "go Pepe's!" Now I HAVE to sign up.

Loving this series so far!
Literally my favorite series you’ve done
Fun fact: my last name is actually “Luther”, so it’s always a treat to possibly think that he could be an ancestor of mine. History is always full of those little Easter eggs.
That’s cute. I think so as well
I'm actually distantly related to Martin Luther on my mom's side, which is ironic given that she was raised Lutheran.
Thank you for the video.
I may just be being a pedant - but the pie chart at 2:36 doesn't look remotely proportional

Hello, someone from Munich here. We still drink Augustiner. :)
You already know I’m early for the beer series!
Yes new video!!
Another fine episode that needs a toast!
I've watched a hundred episodes of extra history, and just now I've discovered the intro is the town building theme from actraiser.
Love your videos! Just a little thing. The Reinheitsgebot in 1516 was put in place in Ingolstadt (where Frankenstein studied), not directly in Munich. Ingolstadt belonged to the dukedom of Munich tho, so... not entirely wrong!
The beer genie looks like the genie from the real life looking Aladdin movie
Fun fact: Shakespeare’s father was also a money-lender, an illegal wool salesman and a local official.
Yay! New video
Gotta say I feel like you outdid yourselves on the art this episode
could you make an episode on the types of malts and yeast used as well as brewing practices? I would also like a bit more on the monastic tradition in brewing, particularly in Munich. Hopefully there will be an episode on the popularization of pale lager we know today in the 1800s.
as an ale man this was fun nd I look forward to more
You should do series on the summaries becuse a lot of people whould watch as you could make people watch with your extrmaly engaging conrent
The English( who's beer nobody drinks) gets a mention and not Belgium?
Probably because the sources they use are in English. That’s the issue with many series but that can’t really be helped easily.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 yeah you're right. I did not think about that.
I'm glad you mentioned Martin Luther's chronic constipation. It's one of the lesser known facts about him. Much of his writing was done while spending hours on end working through extremely painful bowel movements.

I like a good pale ale or lager, though I quite enjoy rice and wheat beers, the later especially if it has an orange. a lot of the beers I like are imported brands, like Asahi and Carona (with lime). I also wouldn’t be much of a mick if I couldn’t enjoy a Guinness, but my favorite all around is probably Smithwicks Red ale. The taste is so good it’s not super high in content either. A bit less in actual Ireland, the imported stuff has to be stronger to last. But man that taste is just so good.

The beer purity law has expanded to the whole Germany since Kaiserreich reunification, but in 1987 EC(later EU) court says that this is a protectionism against other EC member countries and the Reinheitsgebot collapses in practice afterwards, nowadays a lot of DE brewers also brew non-Reinheitsgebot beers like pilsener and sell them in DE

As a Christian I love hearing about Christianity in a video :)
Well now I wonder if holy water was really just yeast water? Kinda like a secret family recipe that when a small bit was added to the mix before sealing it made a better beer... not really a required ingredient, just the method for which the church ensured easy production... Or something like that...
Very entertaining! There's something that bothers me a little at 2:36 though. That blue pie chart sliver is nowhere close to what 36% should look like (it should be just over a third of the pie!)
